00:00Prime Minister Carney, we've just heard about you joining the EU support loan for Ukraine.
00:04Can you give us a bit more information? How much, when would be very interesting to us?
00:09And a question for President von der Leyen, if I may.
00:12We've seen strong pushback from Germany on your decision to call this an associate membership for Canada
00:18and with elections across the European Union next year, seeming likely to return even less sympathetic governments.
00:24Are you not worried that in about a year's time all of this could be much more difficult if not
00:29scrapped altogether?
00:30And a very short one for both of you, if I may, at the outset.
00:35Would President Trump be welcome in the alliance for the future?
00:44On your first question with respect to the Ukraine loan, the short answer is about 500 million euros.
00:52Actually, it is 500 million euros, will be our initial participation.
00:56This is a very important and effective mechanism.
01:00And I actually commend the innovation of President von der Leyen, the Commission and President Costa in creating this,
01:08using frozen assets in order to provide much needed financing for Ukraine.
01:14Of course, what comes behind that is tangible support for defence and reconstruction in Ukraine.
01:23We had a broader discussion of the broader financing needs and security needs of Ukraine, as we often do, as
01:30we meet.
01:31There's a number of other avenues with partners.
01:33And I'll make the point by way of illustration, if I could.
01:38Forgive me.
01:39It's not a perfect analogy, but it's illustrative.
01:42As you're aware, we are members of the Coalition of the Willing, as are many other countries.
01:49That is an example of an application of what would be an alliance for the future, in that there's a
01:55specific objective, which is to support the people of Ukraine, support the principles of territorial integrity, freedom, democracy.
02:04That is focused on, as you know, security guarantees.
02:08It's a possibility through this mechanism, this ambition, this nucleus, to broaden that level of support using those mechanisms.
02:16And the only, what I would say, I'm going to pick up and then I will hand, reinforce something that
02:23President von der Leyen said,
02:24which is this is a positive association.
02:30This is a positive alliance.
02:32This is for things.
02:33It's about creating opportunity, building prosperity, addressing sustainability, and reinforcing sovereignty.
02:41Why?
02:41So we can live our lives as we choose.
02:44Our people can live their lives as they choose and have the full freedoms that people enjoy in the European
02:49Union and enjoy in Canada.
02:50So it's not against anything.
02:52It's for.
02:52And those who choose to be for solutions will be pleased with the result.
