00:00There's going to come a point when we're going to no longer treat college football like college football,
00:04and it's just the minor leagues of the NFL.
00:06And when you kind of think of college football like that,
00:09that's just business as usual for baseball and for basketball.
00:12And so college football is the minor, so guys get called up, called down,
00:15and it's just going to make that transition in everybody's minds that that's probably a new reality.
00:21This is Michael Hoyt.
00:23But Sal brought up a few different takeaways from Bill's players with Sal having asked some guys about how there's
00:33a Browns tight end
00:34who's going to go to play for LSU instead.
00:38Did you think you'd see the day?
00:40I want to hear more structure to his theory here, to his vision, Michael Hoyt.
00:49Not that he has to have any, but guys getting called up and sent down, can you imagine?
00:56How would that have to happen?
00:58How would that take shape?
01:01Am I going back to the old days of the NFL where I'm going 20 rounds in the draft,
01:07and a lot of those guys, like in baseball, I mean, baseball is often high school players,
01:11but they just don't sign or they don't, you know, come right up to the show.
01:20So you'd have their rights, but they would play at, you know, Ohio State or wherever.
01:26Like, we'd watch college football, and they would be on the screen, like, you know, property of the Houston Texans.
01:34Because that's kind of what that sounded like.
01:38Do the Browns, I don't even know, I should know.
01:40Do the Browns lose the rights to this player who's going to LSU?
01:43Or does he stay, they must.
01:46I think they would.
01:47He was an undrafted free agent.
01:49He didn't sign with them initially.
01:51I think it was either Philadelphia or New Orleans was the team he first signed with.
01:54But he did sign a signing bonus with them.
01:56It was $20,000.
01:57He must have to have some contractual connection with the Browns that I guess he's foregoing.
02:05Or that's, I don't even know, I should know.
02:07But it's kind of crazy.
02:10At the same time, before I get to your calls here, at the same time, I want to try to
02:14think up a world like that.
02:16You love college football.
02:18That could be really fun.
02:19Like, take whatever you would need to take to have that come to fruition.
02:25More, you know, like I said, more rounds in the draft.
02:28Some other system where players are assigned to pro teams while they're in college, I guess.
02:35Can I send guys down to, are we talking about that in five years?
02:38If somebody fumbles for me, can I just send them back to Georgia Tech?
02:42Yeah, like you're going back to Ohio State or something like that.
02:45I just, I wonder how they would feel about it.
02:47Because college football for decades has been so regionalized.
02:51Like, there's many southern states that are like, this is our pro team.
02:53Like, what do you mean you're taking our quarterback from LSU to go play for Cincinnati?
02:56Like, what do we care about the Bengals?
02:59I've thought about this a lot for the last 48 hours.
03:01The stripes.
03:01The stripes, that's right.
03:02We're all the Tigers here.
03:04I just, you're right.
03:05Like, the 20-round drafts.
03:07I think even two, because, I mean, a lot of these guys, they're big-time players now in high school.
03:12Like, these five-star athletes, do we have something like a two-round, three-round draft just for high school
03:18players?
03:18Oh, boy.
03:18You'll get the rights here, and in two years, do you still want them, or do they go back?
03:23Who, obviously, the obvious question is, who is drafting Eli Kimball?
03:27But, yeah, so the Browns waived the tight end.
03:30So that's, they're done with him.
03:33He's LSU's apparently now.
03:35What a weird thing.
03:36Patrick is on WGR.
03:38Hi, Patrick.
03:39Hey, Mike.
03:40Hi.
03:40I wanted to respond to your comment about the one seed.
03:43I feel about the same as any of the other Josh Allen-era years about the one seed.
03:49Like, we have a pretty good shot.
03:51I'm not too daunted by the schedule.
03:53I think this team actually plays quite well against elite teams.
03:57Yeah.
03:57But I will say that I feel more zen about it than any other year before.
04:03I think it really reached its apex last year when, after we beat the Saints and the Chiefs
04:10beat the Ravens, we were, the live bet was something like minus 250 for us to win the
04:15one seed or to get the one seed.
04:17So, like week four?
04:18That's right.
04:19That's right.
04:19It really reached a high where I was like, oh, we might actually get it this year.
04:22And then, of course, you know, in beautiful irony, we go on to it.
04:26So we beat the Ravens at home and the Chiefs and the Bengals.
04:29And, you know, not only do we still not get the one seed, but we're not even particularly
04:32close.
04:33Right.
04:34And so I think one of the hardest things to understand and accept as a sports fan and
04:38maybe especially as a football fan is just how much randomness there is.
04:43And so I, you know, I guess I sort of feel like they could easily get the one seed, but
04:51all the sort of like, you know, deep dives into other teams' schedules and matchups, it
04:57just sort of feels, I don't know, like a futile practice.
05:00A little much?
05:01A little much.
05:02You didn't enjoy me running down Houston's December games, Patrick?
05:06You know, I do, but I guess I feel less, and maybe that's a good thing, I just feel
05:10less sort of, I don't know, tense about it now.
05:14Yeah.
05:14I don't know much about golf at all, but anytime I flip on golf on a Sunday, it seems like
05:20Scotty
05:20Scheffler is just like in third place every Sunday of any tournament he's in.
05:24And I always think just, you know, again, this is probably an ignorant thing to say,
05:28but why doesn't everyone just, instead of taking him to win tournaments, just take him
05:31to finish top five or something?
05:33And I sort of feel that way with the Bills.
05:35It's like, I don't know, we could get the one seed.
05:37It would probably be, you know, funny if this was finally the year we did.
05:40But I would almost be more interested in just saying like, yeah, they'll get to the divisional
05:44at least every year.
05:45I think, I guess maybe the bet is the win total, you know, as opposed to the one seed or
05:51division
05:51or, cause that's probably been pretty safe, uh, the last six years or so.
05:56Yeah.
05:57Thanks, Patrick.
05:57Always, uh, like hearing from you.
05:59Um, it is random.
06:03We don't like to admit it sometimes in sports, but there's a lot of luck in it.
06:09Um, and I also, maybe like the caller, I also try to never miss an opportunity to prove
06:15the point.
06:16Um, but the thing about that is a lot of people are a hard sell on it and anything that
06:22one
06:23person might suggest is luck, the next person will have a reason to say it isn't.
06:29And this really goes, quintessentially, this is results in close games, one score games where
06:35the bills, you know, they lost more than their share.
06:38Why are they lacking some sort of gene where they would be able to pull these games out
06:43or is it just kind of what happens?
06:46Well, it can't just be what happens.
06:47And then you have Kansas city two years ago when they went 15 and two and all their, they
06:55had tons of close games, one score games, and they won them all literally.
06:59I mean, I don't think the bills game was a one score game and the Denver game and week
07:0318 was definitely not, I think it was 38 to nothing.
07:06You're playing a different sport.
07:07If 38 is one score, I don't even know what, maybe a card game.
07:14So that's really, I mean, field goal kicking is not luck, but there's a, there's a lot of,
07:24it's, there's a range of outcomes.
07:26I mean, Butker, but, you know, I'm glad I thought of this because I think on, on the
07:32other night in the preseason, Butker hit from 69, like kind of easily against Tampa and he
07:41missed from 43.
07:43So that's what I mean.
07:44Just sort of like the unpredictable nature of it.
07:46A lot of things, you know, the ball is around as they say, like it's tough to predict these
07:51things, but I, I always want to try.
07:53Anyway, Pat is next.
07:55Hi, Pat.
07:56Hey, Mike.
07:58Hi.
07:59I just had a thought regarding Michael Hoyt's comments and something I've been thinking
08:03about for a long time.
08:04It's just that I wish the divisions in football, in the NFL would actually align with specific
08:11conferences in college football.
08:14And maybe that's not where you necessarily draft from, but if you are calling people up,
08:19so for example, you know, the California teams are aligned with the Pac-10, they can call
08:24up those players from the Pac-10 conference and so on and so forth, and just kind of make
08:29it make a little bit more sense than college football.
08:32And I think once they started with the crazy realignment, you know, with like, I don't know,
08:37what is it, Oregon and in the Big Ten.
08:39Right.
08:39Um, I think all sort of bets were off and I, I just feel like if the NFL actually, cause
08:47I don't think you can align with one specific school, but with conferences, I think it'd
08:51be really interesting.
08:52Like NFC East can draw from, I don't know, the Big Ten, for example.
08:57Um, yeah.
08:59And so I, I don't know.
09:00I just think that would be an interesting way.
09:01Cause I've actually lost total interest in college football since realignment and I'm
09:06all for those guys getting paid, but it just doesn't seem like college has anything to do
09:10with the sport anymore.
09:11Yeah.
09:12Thanks Pat.
09:12A couple of thoughts on this.
09:14Um, and I want to preface this by saying this is not a knock on your idea because I
09:19think almost any idea of this sort, it might be easy to sort of like, well, here's why
09:25it won't work or here's why it can't work.
09:27And that just happens to be my nature anyway.
09:29So, um, I don't want to make it sound like that's not a good idea.
09:33I think you, you got there about realignment and how much wackier that would be now than
09:40the old days when it all made more sense.
09:44You couldn't, you, you would never see the NFL restrict teams to regions because it's just
09:53way too imbalanced.
09:54I mean, suddenly the NFC North would be the best division in football, right?
10:00What schools do they get?
10:02Georgia, Alabama, LSU, Miami, Florida, Florida state, the Carolinas, like that, that won't
10:11work.
10:11Like we, we, we want, it makes, it's an interesting idea, but we can't have that.
10:17And you know, this reality with college football, like the caller, Pat said, he said, like, I've
10:24just completely lost interest in it.
10:26I have two, but this isn't why.
10:30Um, to me, it just became like I had enough on my plate.
10:33I had enough sports on my plate with two teenagers and I just didn't need to watch everything
10:38like I did half my life ago.
10:40I was, I felt like I was, I sort of obligated to watch everything and I don't feel that way
10:47anymore.
10:47So college football has always been annoying to me in certain ways, just how corrupt it
10:54seemed to be largely.
10:54And that was enough.
10:57I mean, I, you get two days every weekend in the fall.
11:00I'm using one of them for sports.
11:01I'm not using both.
11:02So, okay.
11:04I mean, that's easy for anybody to say when I was younger and didn't have a family, like
11:09I was definitely using both.
11:11Um, now though, like Ross Tucker made a comment that I think maybe is the most important one,
11:20if not a little bit sad.
11:22And this has kind of always been something I've thought about football, be it pro or college
11:28and just how wealthy it is and how all over you football is.
11:33I mean, now these, the bills have practices that are events.
11:37Like it just never seems to slow down.
11:39Um, and a part of me feels like that that's just wrong.
11:42I mean, not everything is important.
11:44If everything were important, nothing would be important, you know, like just think about
11:49it.
11:49But Ross said for all the, basically for all the complaining anybody might be inclined to
11:55do about all this player movement, it doesn't seem to mean that much to people when the games
12:01are on because then the game's on and you love it.
12:05And I mean, in college, in major college football, players have been moving around for a few
12:11years now.
12:12I mean, Bo Nix played all over the country and I don't know, did people not watch his
12:16college games?
12:17Did they not watch Oregon in the playoff because they were sort of making a point against Bo
12:23Nix, a protest, you know, a conscientious objection to watching Bo Nix because he's on his third
12:28team or fourth or whatever it was, who is the player?
12:33Oh, there's somebody speaking of this kind.
12:35And plus he had COVID that disrupted a lot of it.
12:38Tyler Shuck played with the current Saints quarterback who has been in the league for
12:44one year, played college with somebody you, you couldn't even believe it.
12:49Was it Justin Herbert?
12:51Maybe it was at Oregon.
12:53I mean, he was at three schools too, Tyler Shuck, but he played with, maybe because it
12:58was Oregon, it was lots of famous people.
13:00All right.
13:042018, Justin Herbert.
13:07I mean, did, did you know that?
13:09That Tyler Shuck, who was a rookie last year, played at Oregon with Justin Herbert.
13:14If there aren't other names on this Oregon roster that aren't even, Penny Sewell, I mean,
13:19just that aren't even better for this point, but this is the pros too.
13:24I think about this often when I'm watching baseball and here comes this relief pitcher
13:29and he's on his seventh team in nine years.
13:32There was a guy this summer in baseball that played for four teams in less than a month.
13:39I think it was 21 days.
13:43I don't remember his name, but it just happened.
13:46There was a guy who was on his fourth team in three weeks.
13:50It's just sort of like the nature of it.
13:52And if you're old enough and you think about how it was when you, like I'm 54.
13:57So if I think about what it was like when I first started getting into baseball and thinking
14:03about like a card collection, my cards and everything like this.
14:06Sure.
14:06There were trades and some players changed teams, but not most of them.
14:10You know, you were on that team unless there was some big move, but you didn't have free
14:15agency really.
14:16And then it just became all of it almost.
14:21And guys are always moving around.
14:24So I don't know.
14:26It doesn't feel like sports has become less popular, but it is a little bit like how I,
14:33I just don't think it's perfect, you know, this way, because you want there to be a perfect
14:39world, there is a connection player or players to city and community that lasts.
14:46And it isn't just, and football is not the worst for this.
14:48I think maybe baseball is, but you know, not the superstars necessarily where players are
14:52just bouncing all the time.
14:54And maybe the NBA is a little bit this where even the superstars are on six teams, you know?
15:01So yeah, I mean, if college football has gone that way and it seems to have, well, it doesn't
15:10go back unless people just give up on it.
15:15And I don't see that happening.
15:16I don't see, I don't get the sense with college football that it's, you know, people are about
15:20to stop watching.
15:22It is wild though.
15:24And this idea that, like Michael Hoyt was saying, you could have basically major college
15:31football serve as a farm system for the NFL and players are already, I mean, I guess I'd
15:36have to admit that would get me to watch Bill's players, you know, like expected good ones on
15:45college teams and it would give us a whole other level of, you know, discussion points.
15:54And do you call up the starting edge rusher from Missouri for this game against whoever?
16:01Because, you know, like you kind of need, you might need somebody, you got an injury.
16:05Now, if you have injuries, there's no place to go.
16:08If the Bills lose important players, there's no place to go.
16:10You just go to waivers and you go to guys that no other team wanted.
16:14I mean, really, that's the best you can do.
16:17Really makes you think.
16:18Mike Schope here, back after this time out.
16:20This is WGR.
