00:00An analyst says the timing of a mandatory motion on cooperation with UMNO at Passes Muktamar next week could put
00:08pressure on the Barisan Nasional linchpin to respond.
00:12University Malaya's Taufik Ya'akub believes the motion, if passed, would show that passed delegates were serious about renewing cooperation
00:20with UMNO NBN.
00:21He noted that the timing of Passes Muktamar on September 4th and 5th, just days before UMNO's General Assembly on
00:29September 11th and 12th, would allow Passes to set the narrative on cooperation first.
00:35Taufik said strong support for cooperation at the Muktamar would shift attention to UMNO afterwards.
00:41However, he stressed that UMNO is under no obligation to bring a similar motion at its Assembly because of its
00:48commitments within the unity government and its relationship with Pakatan Harapan.
00:53Pass Secretary-General Takiyudin Hassan on Tuesday said political cooperation with UMNO was expected to be among the mandatory motions
01:01at the party's 72nd Muktamar.
01:04BN appears to be exploring closer cooperation with the Pass-led Perikatan Nasional after an informal electoral alliance in the
01:12Negeri Sembilan election helps the two blocs secure a two-thirds majority in the 36-seat State Assembly.
01:19BN won 18 seats, while PN took seven.
01:23University Science Malaysia Academic Azim Faswan Ahmad Farouk views the motion as a sign that Passes is serious about opening
01:31the door to cooperation,
01:32but not as a decision to form a political pact.
01:36He explained that the Muktamar would only empower past leaders to negotiate with any cooperation still dependent on UMNO's agreement.
01:44Azim expects the parties to pursue limited, seat-specific cooperation by dividing seats, coordinating candidates, and avoiding contests against each
01:54other.
