00:16The
00:17disaster in the Himalayas has now triggered a desperate search for missing Americans.
00:22The U.S. State Department says it is aware of 90 American citizens who may have been impacted
00:29and remain unaccounted for following the catastrophic flooding in Nepal and Tibet.
00:35As of Thursday morning, three Americans had been safely rescued.
00:40Officials also said they were not aware of any American deaths at that time.
00:45With communications disrupted and entire communities cut off,
00:49authorities still do not know how many missing people may be trapped,
00:54injured, or simply unable to contact their families.
00:58The disaster struck with terrifying speed.
01:01A landslide and glacial collapse unleashed an enormous surge of water,
01:07ice, and rock through steep Himalayan valleys.
01:10The torrent raced downstream along a river,
01:13slamming into towns and villages that had little time to escape.
01:17Homes were destroyed, infrastructure was ripped apart,
01:22and entire sections of the riverbank were transformed into mud and wreckage.
01:27The region has also suffered severe damage to power and communications networks.
01:33That has made the search even more complicated.
01:36The crisis extends far beyond the United States.
01:40More than 700 foreign nationals are reportedly unaccounted for across Nepal and China.
01:46Those missing are believed to include citizens of at least 31 countries.
01:52Among them are people from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada.
01:58Many were tourists and religious pilgrims traveling through the region.
02:02Some had spent months or even years saving for journeys through Nepal toward Tibet and Mount Kailash.
02:08Among those still missing are American tourists who had traveled to the region for what was supposed to be a
02:15life-changing journey.
02:17One missing couple are reportedly retirees who traveled after their children encouraged them to enjoy life and pursue the pilgrimage.
02:25Instead, they were caught in one of the region's most devastating natural disasters.
02:31The flood's force destroyed roads and bridges and disrupted electricity and communications.
02:37Rain, mud, and wreckage are now slowing rescue operations.
02:42The United States is now closely monitoring the crisis.
02:46President Donald Trump has offered to send any help to Nepal, describing the disaster as terrible.
02:52What are the reactions to the Americans missing in Nepal?
02:56That's terrible. No, and we've called Nepal, and we've offered any help that they need.
03:01You know, we have a very good relationship with Nepal, and that was a brutal, that wasn't just, that was
03:07mud and water as a mixture.
03:09Nobody's ever seen anything quite like that.
03:11We're very powerful, strong, you know, strong, well-built buildings were wiped out like they were toothpicks.
03:18That's a terrible thing. No, we are sending aid, and we've spoken to the leadership, and we let them know
03:26anything they want, we'll have.
03:27And there were 50, maybe 60 Americans over there. We haven't gotten the full list yet, but hopefully they're okay.
03:35But that looked pretty, that looked like something that people will not be, somebody will be lost, unfortunately.
03:44International assistance is arriving as rescue crews continue their search.
03:49Dozens of foreign nationals were rescued on Thursday, providing a crucial sign of hope, but hundreds remain unaccounted for.
03:57Helicopters and ground teams are working through difficult terrain, while damaged roads and unstable slopes continue to slow the operation.
04:06The search for the missing Americans has now entered a critical phase.
04:11The State Department says 90 Americans remain unaccounted for, while three have already been safely rescued.
04:19No American deaths have been confirmed by the department at this time, but officials are working in an environment where
04:26the full scale of the devastation is still emerging.
04:29More than 1,300 people remain missing across the disaster zone, including hundreds of foreign nationals.
