00:00Did you see the conversation that Steph Curry had with our buddy Dalton Johnson of NBC Sports Bay Area?
00:07No, I did not see it.
00:08So, for those of you who didn't know, on Saturday, Steph Curry became extension eligible.
00:17So, what's the holdup?
00:20Where's the extension?
00:22Where's the extension?
00:23Where's the extension?
00:24Like, what's the rush?
00:26There's no rush.
00:27Right.
00:27But, at the same time, everybody wants the extension, right?
00:33The Warriors and Steph Curry are on the same page, so...
00:35I don't know.
00:36I didn't talk to Steph Curry.
00:37I mean, that's what has been reported all along, is that both sides are actively seeking the same thing, engaged
00:46on this whole thing, but it hasn't happened.
00:50I'm being a little tongue-in-cheek here.
00:52I think there are a few quotes that Warrior fans will want to hear, maybe even enjoy hearing.
00:58All right, here's the first one.
01:00There is no question.
01:04I want to be here for the rest of my career, and I'm pretty sure that is going to happen.
01:13End quote.
01:14Steph Curry.
01:15All right, so we can finally put to bed the thing that we've been trying to put to bed forever,
01:21which is, what if Steph Curry wants to go blah, blah, blah, or go to San Antonio and play with
01:27Wemby or go back home to North Carolina?
01:30He makes it pretty definitive there that he wants to be a Warrior, and I would almost guarantee that the
01:35Warriors want him to be a Warrior as well.
01:38So, another quote, the deal and the contract stuff will happen at the right time, and we are not letting
01:47it be a distraction from our preparation for the season and the fact that the team we're coming back with
01:54has a lot of familiarity.
01:56End quote.
01:57Okay.
01:58So, I don't...
01:59How's that one grab you?
02:00Well, I don't really know what the right time is, and if he's really focused on trying to get ready
02:06for the season, then, to me, this will all get done before you get to the regular season.
02:11That way, you know, if the right time...
02:13I don't think the right time would be, like, December in the middle of the year.
02:16I think that the best time would be knowing what you have contract-wise going into the year, and that
02:22way you can just put the whole thing aside.
02:24What if the right time is after the year?
02:26Well, then that's fine.
02:27I mean, I don't think that there's any...
02:30To me, there's no notion of, you know, if Steph doesn't get this done with the Warriors, they may want
02:36to, you know, lowball him or move off of him.
02:39I think that whatever he thinks the right time is and whatever the organization thinks as well, I believe that
02:45when you get to that time, they're going to offer him whatever that they need to offer him, and he'll
02:50take it.
02:51Here's another quote.
02:52The goal stays the same.
02:54Extension stuff will figure that out at the right time.
02:57But I'm ready for year 18.
02:59It's kind of crazy that it's been this long, and I'm still trying to play at a very high level
03:05to help us win, and I'll be able to do my job.
03:09Okay.
03:10I mean, I take him at his word.
03:12Year 18.
03:14Wow.
03:14I mean, when you put the number on it like that, it's like, oh, my God, year 18?
03:19And I'm sure he's put in all the work he needs to put in in the offseason like he always
03:23does.
03:24There's also a quote from Aisha Curry in this conversation.
03:30Okay.
03:31She was asked about the situation and where he's at as he's getting ready for the season, and she said
03:39Steph is the hardest working man in the room.
03:42He has no days off.
03:44He hasn't stopped since last season ended.
03:46He's ready.
03:47He's ready to get out there.
03:49I think we're going to be in for some fun surprises over the next couple of years.
03:54End quote, Aisha Curry.
03:56Okay.
03:57Fun surprises.
03:58Fun surprises.
03:59I wonder what a fun surprise would be that Steph Curry hasn't already done.
04:03Maybe the Warriors will sign her.
04:06Right.
04:07I mean, the first thing I thought of is maybe Steph Curry will go out and dunk.
04:11That would be a fun surprise.
04:13I do not need him to dunk.
04:14I know he dunks maybe once a year, or I don't even know what the numbers are.
04:19I'm trying to close my eyes and remember a dunk.
04:21He can dunk.
04:23Of course he can.
04:23Yeah.
04:24That would be a fun surprise if he went up and windmilled.
04:27Yeah, but do you want that?
04:30I mean, is that part of the new normal, if you will?
04:33Probably not.
04:34Steph dunking?
04:35No, I don't know what a fun surprise would be, though.
04:38Maybe Steph is referring to the performance that she thinks Steph is about to uncork.
04:46Maybe she is referring to Steph playing 70 games.
04:51Maybe she knows some things about who the Warriors think they can bring him alongside him.
04:57I don't know.
04:59Maybe they're planning on having kid number five.
05:01That would be a fun surprise.
05:04Sure.
05:05I mean, I don't know that the fans really...
05:08Do you know what I mean?
05:08Like, sure, you love Steph.
05:09You love Aisha.
05:10But, like, if they have four kids or five kids, this doesn't really...
05:13This is no skin off our back.
05:15I don't know what would qualify as a fun surprise as far as how he plays.
05:19Just talk about Warrior basketball.
05:21Sure.
05:21Oh, fun surprise would be if this guy is still playing at this level at age 40.
05:27Yeah, and a fun surprise would be, like, if they were able to go out and get somebody at the
05:32deadline
05:32and, you know, have this actually not be...
05:35Not a ceremonial season, but it just feels a little bit like the expectations are kind of lower than they've
05:42been in a long time.
05:43Here's the question I have, and it's why I bring this up.
05:47And Steph twice refers to, we will figure the extension out at the right time.
05:52And I want to know what the right time is, because in this moment, I'll freely admit something to you,
05:59and I wonder if the Warriors and Steph feel the same way.
06:02I have no flippin' idea what the number should be.
06:06I know what he's eligible for.
06:08I don't think it makes any sense whatsoever for that to be the number.
06:12However, why would Steph Curry and the Warriors, honestly, I know this may sound stupid,
06:19why would either of them be motivated to lock Steph Curry up right now
06:25to damn near $70 million per year for two more years beyond this year?
06:33Why would they do that?
06:34I don't even think that's good for Steph.
06:37It's not bad for Steph.
06:38No, but it's money.
06:41That can't really have an effect on him anymore.
06:44That's like, you know what I mean?
06:47That's like getting Steph a new pair of shoes.
06:49So I have $4 billion of those.
06:52It's great.
06:52I like the shoes that you just gave me, but that's not going to change anything for him.
06:56I would think he's much more motivated right now about trying to figure out
07:01how this can still be a highly competitive situation.
07:05And I don't think it makes any sense for them to sign a max extension right now.
07:10How would you know?
07:11And I don't know if we come down from max, how far down?
07:16Like, I have no idea.
07:17The guy missed half the year last year.
07:19And that becomes, I think, when you figure out when the time is right.
07:23And if Steph and the team have already agreed in principle that it's not going to be $136.7 million
07:30just because he's going to be $39 and then he's going to be $40 and he'll be $41 by the
07:34end of the deal.
07:35If that's the agreement, then maybe the right time is in the offseason next year,
07:41where at that point, Steph can say, all right, you know, you've done this at the deadline.
07:45And now we have this much room for me and there's room for somebody else.
07:49And at that point, you can maybe come to a determination on what works for both sides.
07:54I mean, isn't it kind of like what, like a much bigger version of what Draymond just did while they
07:58chased LeBron.
08:00I'll just, I'll opt over here.
08:02I'll just sit out.
08:03You try to go do some things and then you let me know what you're able to do.
08:08And once we know what you can do, then we can figure out what the right number is for me.
08:13That's what Draymond just did, right?
08:15And so this would be Steph doing that.
08:19Like, let's just, let's see what else you can do.
08:22And by the way, if you can do nothing, yeah, then give me the max, which is what they did
08:27with Draymond.
08:28Turns out we can do nothing so you get your contract back.
08:31But if you can do something and me taking 50 helps or me taking 40 or hell,
08:39you could LeBron the thing and take the minimum, like whatever it is, if I'm Steph, I would have full
08:46trust in the Warriors.
08:47I mean, there's not going to be any funny business surrounding Steph Curry.
08:50Well, they're not going to, the organization is not going to pull the funny business, quote unquote,
08:55and then Steph gets to the end of next year and he just, I'm just going to leave because there
09:00was funny business.
09:01And, you know, you offered me an extension, but I was going to play ball and take less.
09:06And then you came back and you lowballed me.
09:07And so now I'm going to go be a spur.
09:09The organization would never survive that in the court of public opinion.
09:14Yeah.
09:14Maybe it's just not going to happen.
09:17Maybe it's not going to happen now.
09:18It may not.
09:19I think that'd be great.
09:21I think that would be great.
09:22And, and I'm sort of feeling like that, that is what's happening because why else would Steph be so careful
09:30to, um, look,
09:32it's not like Dalton, you know, went to his house or whatever.
09:35Like this is something for NBC sports Bay area.
09:40Dalton gets the, gets the conversation and they want these quotes out there.
09:44The warriors are not in business right now.
09:46It's the off season, but they, they wanted the quote out here on Monday morning.
09:50And the quote is, there's no question.
09:53I want to be here for the rest of my career.
09:55And I'm pretty sure that's going to happen.
09:57So don't worry about it.
09:59Maybe the extension is not coming at all before the year.
10:02Yeah.
10:02It may not be in, you know, the 29th, I think was Saturday, which is when he was eligible.
10:08And so, uh, I was running around with balloons, the number four and cake and the whole deal.
10:12And so I wasn't really that yoked in on it, but yeah, you're two days later, first day of the
10:17week, it's Monday.
10:18And so before all of us talking heads can start to rev up like contract, watch extension, watch day three
10:25and nothing's happening.
10:26Oh, it's not like some negotiation needs to happen.
10:29If they were going to do a max extension, then it's the max extension.
10:33You don't need to go over numbers.
