Inside the Hard Rock Hotel New York, In Color joined us for a very befitting hang, coloring pictures of each other while talking about the origins of the band in Nashville, the blur of life on the road, and the passing of the iconic Dolly Parton.
Transcript
00:03Welcome in to the New York Hard Rock Hotel. Today, we get to draw in color. In color.
00:11Hey, guys. Welcome in. Welcome to the Hard Rock Hotel, New York City. Is it treating you well?
00:18Are you feeling okay? How's the city doing?
00:20I love it. It's a nice gloomy day.
00:21Glad to be here.
00:22Glad we're in here.
00:24Yeah, no kidding. All right, so this is going to be a challenge of a lifetime for you guys,
00:27all right? You're going to be drawing each other, whether it's on stage, on a farm, maybe
00:33with some puppies, whatever you want. You're going to draw the band, and we're going to
00:37discover it together, your artistry, right here live at the Hard Rock Hotel, all right?
00:42Perfect.
00:43All right. Now, while you do that, I'm just going to draw me.
00:46Oh, perfect.
00:47Self-portrait.
00:48Oh, nice.
00:49He's going to be so handsome.
00:50What happens if... So, who wins?
00:54Well, we're going to leave that to our steam panel of experts.
00:56Okay, got it.
00:56You know, we have people from the Smithsonian, here are true art dealers, you know, people
01:03who know the...
01:04Give us a break. It's been since fifth grade since I probably...
01:07Well, you better up your game, because we've got some high-level buyers today.
01:11I'm logging in.
01:12Yeah, heavy stuff.
01:13Yeah, the Guggenheim is ready to put this in immediately, all right?
01:16I'm in. Let's do it.
01:17Yeah, so whenever you're ready, hit it and go to town.
01:22What do I start with?
01:24First off, who's the best artist in the group?
01:26Oh, wow.
01:27Who's the best...
01:28Well, I guess we're about to find out.
01:29We're going to find out.
01:30You guys just don't doodle on a regular basis?
01:32No, I feel like...
01:33I think, Val, you've been into that more than the rest of us.
01:36I like doodling, but, like, you know, in a casual doodle sense.
01:39Casual doodle.
01:40Yeah, I'm a casual doodler.
01:41Yeah.
01:42You're a one-night stand doodler.
01:43Yeah.
01:44Yeah, I know.
01:45I really get fixated on one drawing, and then, you know, for the next year or two, I kind
01:50of just...
01:50What's the one drawing?
01:53You know, it's really up to interpretation.
01:56Okay.
01:58It's not just one drawing.
01:59Sure.
01:59It changes as time goes on, you know.
02:01Sure.
02:02It might be a million stick figures, like, you know...
02:06Climbing up a huge mountain.
02:08You ever see a guy on the train who's usually, like, drawing the people on the train?
02:13Yes.
02:13Have you ever seen that guy?
02:14Yeah, love that guy.
02:14Yeah, all right.
02:15Love a guy.
02:15All right, so how's it going over there?
02:17What are you starting with?
02:17Are you starting with the stage?
02:19Starting with the stage.
02:20Okay.
02:20Am I supposed to tell you as I go?
02:21I mean, you can tell me.
02:23Don't tell them.
02:23I kind of want it to be a surprise.
02:24Okay.
02:25All right.
02:25It's a big surprise.
02:25You're the artist here.
02:26You're the big-time artist.
02:27I mean, we're about to find out.
02:29We're about to find out.
02:30So when you guys...
02:32First off, let's just start with, like, how you guys got together.
02:35Like, where did this whole in-color thing start?
02:39Well, if I had to say, oh, my gosh, this is so hard.
02:43Also multitasking.
02:44What, do you need two hands to draw?
02:46Our ADHD is shining.
02:47I mean, no, it's...
02:48I have one brain.
02:51We've all been friends for, I mean, over...
02:54Sure.
02:54...eight years.
02:55Yeah, keep looking at me.
02:56Eight years or so.
02:59They went to...
03:00Val and Miles went to high school together.
03:02Okay.
03:03Yeah, we did.
03:04Bands in high school?
03:05Guess what?
03:06We were in art class together.
03:07No kidding.
03:07We're about to find out.
03:09I bring it full circle.
03:10I can't remember what grade I got, but it better be an A.
03:13What about, like, how...
03:16Were you in bands in high school?
03:17Were you doing any of that kind of stuff?
03:18Or was it just all goofing around and big sports guys?
03:22I was homeschooled.
03:23Not big sports guys.
03:25Not big sports guys.
03:26Val and I were in a band.
03:27We were in bands in high school.
03:30I think I was in eighth grade when we started being in a band together.
03:35Eighth grade?
03:36Yeah, yeah.
03:36So, like...
03:37In eighth grade, I couldn't make a fist.
03:38A little while ago.
03:40A little while ago.
03:41What were you singing about and writing about in eighth grade?
03:44Oh, just anything.
03:45You know, just whatever.
03:46Yeah.
03:47Just whatever.
03:48Oh, no.
03:49Someone's got something.
03:49Yeah, no, no, no.
03:50I'm just...
03:52Holden, did you draw a wiener?
03:54Oh, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
03:56Not yet.
03:57That comes later.
03:58I was in marching band in high school, which is kind of the opposite of sports.
04:03Being a redhead and in marching band.
04:06Yeah.
04:06Oh, yeah.
04:06That's a brutal combo.
04:07That is pretty brutal.
04:08Yeah, it's brutal.
04:08Sounds like you did well with the ladies.
04:10Oh, yeah.
04:11Oh, yeah.
04:12Can you tell?
04:13Yeah.
04:14No, yeah.
04:15Of course.
04:16Of course.
04:16But when you finally get together, how did the whole thing come together if you're all
04:20in different parts of the world, different parts of life?
04:22We all met in Nashville.
04:24Yeah, we met in Nashville.
04:26Yeah, we all...
04:27I mean, we met...
04:27Holden and I met when we were like 18.
04:30Wow.
04:30Through this band, the band Camino.
04:33Yeah, of course.
04:34Nashville's on Band Camino.
04:35Yes, some good friends of ours, and yeah, they introduced us to them, because they had
04:44played shows together, their previous band, and since then, I mean, we were just like
04:51roommates and friends for years.
04:54Okay.
04:55Previous endeavors, and then we...
04:57That's so crazy, Val.
05:00That's so crazy.
05:02Are you getting very detailed?
05:04Are you trying to go very...
05:04I'm just really trying to, you know, do something here.
05:07Just get the ball rolling a bit.
05:08Are you guys more...
05:09Are you competitive with each other?
05:11Or is it more like...
05:12Yeah, for sure.
05:13Probably.
05:14Probably.
05:14Probably.
05:15I think it's unknowingly, you know?
05:17I don't think it's like a...
05:18So this is low-key a competition for you guys.
05:21Inevitably.
05:21Yeah.
05:22Inevitably, I think, yeah.
05:23A little bit.
05:24We're going to be talking about this the rest of the day.
05:26Well, I mean, we don't have much else to talk about, I guess.
05:30I mean, you guys have a pretty crazy year, right?
05:32I mean, things kind of went fast once this thing started, right?
05:36Once you all got together, it went from zero to 80.
05:41It...
05:42Wait, what?
05:43To 80.
05:44When does it go to 100?
05:45Yeah, just 80.
05:47When does it go to 100?
05:48Wait, why do you have to go 100?
05:49Speed limit's 70 in most part of the country.
05:52I love those areas, though.
05:54Like, you go to Nebraska, and it's like 85 is the speed limit.
05:57That's probably not true, but something close to it.
06:00Yeah, there's nobody on the road, so it doesn't matter with...
06:03Yeah, nobody lives there.
06:04Actually, I spent about a week in Nebraska.
06:07It's a beautiful state.
06:08I have a better question.
06:08What speed do you think you guys are going right now?
06:11I'd like to say, like...
06:1420?
06:15Yeah.
06:15We're coasting.
06:16We're coasting.
06:17Yeah, we're coasting.
06:17We're in a school zone.
06:18The cruise control.
06:19You're more of a golf cart community, you guys.
06:21Yeah, we're in a school zone.
06:22Senior citizens just hanging out.
06:23Yeah.
06:24We're going smooth.
06:26I mean, no, it's been a very fun year.
06:30So what would, like...
06:31I think that we all can pretty much, if you listen to In Color at all, you can hear the
06:36influences, right?
06:38I think it's pretty easy to surmise some of the bands that you guys were listening to.
06:43What would you say those are?
06:45Well, I get a little 1975.
06:46Yeah, for sure.
06:47What would be a surprise influence that you would say that nobody else would guess?
06:53Probably Masayoshi Takenaka's 1973.
06:57It might not be 1973, but with Otango Suerte as the first track.
07:03One of the great guitar players in the world.
07:05We're all huge fans of that in every track.
07:06One of the great guitar players.
07:07We're all super leaned into that.
07:08That's not what the album's called, but I remember the first song.
07:12Sure.
07:13I mean, that's a really strong one.
07:14I'm going to let somebody else take it from here.
07:15And you came with that so fast.
07:17It's just like you knew that was coming.
07:19You know, I'm kind of an intuitive guy.
07:22Yeah, I'm trying to figure out how to draw.
07:23I mean, we all grew up on so many different types of music, so I feel like it shines in
07:29different songs, for sure.
07:34But, I mean, Coldplay is a huge inspiration.
07:38Somebody said, I think it was Miles that said, if Coldplay is Superman, we are kind of
07:45like Batman.
07:47It's like a dark, not to compare ourselves to the greatest band of all time.
07:52You do have that all-leather suit that you wear a lot.
07:54Yeah.
07:55It's a suit.
07:56Yeah, we keep it in a locked case.
07:58Yeah, it's in a cage.
07:59In the back of the van, yeah.
08:01You have that old butler that follows you around a lot.
08:04I forgot about that guy.
08:05Yeah, yeah.
08:06You know, he's actually-
08:08Yeah.
08:08Yeah.
08:09Max.
08:11Shout out, Max, our tour manager, who is our tour dad, our therapist, our everything.
08:18Our saints.
08:19Our saints.
08:19This is-
08:20I went with a bit of a different approach from Miles's.
08:23Oh, wow.
08:23I didn't start headfirst, and I kind of made you look like Frankenstein's monster.
08:26Dude, I look so scared.
08:28I don't know if you can salvage that on Miles here.
08:30I'm sorry, bro.
08:31I think-
08:31Mine's a bit of a-
08:32Miles has gained some weight over there.
08:35He is getting a little-
08:36Big.
08:37A little hunched over.
08:38What did you have for lunch, my man?
08:40I didn't play too much drums.
08:42Dude.
08:43What?
08:44Oh, that's really good.
08:45Dude, that's awesome.
08:46Oh, that's rough.
08:46I love it, man.
08:47I like the horizon.
08:48Yep.
08:49I'm having a tough time in there.
08:50Oh, we have plenty more for you, wherever you need.
08:52Brad, I think you might be the reason this band breaks up today.
08:57Well, if we accomplish anything today, guys, we did it.
09:00So-
09:01Mission accomplished.
09:02All right, so then we get to the point where you guys have found each other.
09:07You then found your influences.
09:09Now, when you put something together, you put a song out in the world, when did you realize
09:13that's the sound?
09:14That's exactly what we're going for.
09:16I think we're still on that journey.
09:19All right.
09:19And, you know, I'd like to think that we'll always be on that journey in a way.
09:23I think we try to trust sort of chasing the feeling of when we can elicit an emotional
09:32response from ourselves collectively.
09:35Then we feel like, okay, we're on to something.
09:36Let's chase this down.
09:39And that thing going through our four different palettes that somehow align at the same time
09:45lands it as being in color.
09:48And does it have to elicit an emotional response from everybody or-
09:51It usually does.
09:52We're pretty aligned on that.
09:53Like, if we feel like- I mean, there's, of course, moments where, you know, it's not that, but
10:01it's pretty evident when we're creating that it's- we're all like, holy shit, like, that's
10:06the thing.
10:07That's what we all are moved towards.
10:08And there's also, I feel like, a trust that we've built and are continuing to build of
10:13like- I know there have been times for me when we're making something where I'm like, you
10:20know, maybe not from jump, like, oh, this is the thing.
10:23We're on to it.
10:24But these guys are all really feeling it.
10:26I'm going to sit back, let things happen as they do.
10:29And then when that's happened, I've been like, here we are.
10:32We made it here.
10:33Is anything ever coming?
10:34You're like, it's just not an in-color song yet.
10:36But- Yeah, I mean, there are even whole demos that we've made where we're like, that's
10:41really cool, but like, is this in color?
10:44Maybe not, you know?
10:45But it's still worth doing that and seeing it through.
10:48Yeah, that's a constant- Val, you've been a little too aggressive over there?
10:51Let's move on.
10:52Yeah.
10:53It's a constant journey.
10:54He snapped a pencil in half.
10:55He's going so hard on this.
10:57You broke another one.
10:58Oh my God.
11:00Dude, he's going crazy.
11:02Tap out.
11:02Tap out.
11:03He's too strong.
11:03Yeah, I need to excuse myself.
11:04He's too powerful.
11:07I'm going to try this a third time.
11:09He's too powerful.
11:10He's too powerful.
11:10Sorry, sorry.
11:11We have limited budget here at the Hard Rock Hotel and Odyssey.
11:14All right, so if you're still on that journey now, what does next year look like?
11:19This time next year, what are we doing?
11:20Where are we going?
11:21Who are we with?
11:22Oh, I mean, hopefully our first album.
11:27We have a lot of songs that we are super excited about.
11:31We just took a trip in June and wrote like 15 songs that we love.
11:38And we have a song coming out in a couple weeks called Marionette.
11:44Oh my God, is that number three?
11:46Oh, man.
11:47This is insane.
11:47I think you're doing this on purpose.
11:48I think something's going on with your black pen.
11:50It's honestly very, very like...
11:52It kind of saved me, though, Val.
11:54I mean, a little bit, you know?
11:55Yeah, right?
11:56It's almost right.
11:56It's more impressive.
11:57Yeah, you elongated the legs.
11:58Yeah, yeah, yeah.
11:59I'm just in the foreground.
12:00It looks like somebody else drew each person.
12:03It's more impressive that you keep changing styles.
12:07I'm really...
12:07Yeah, I'm trying to capture the essence.
12:11Sure.
12:11But more music, more shows.
12:13Okay.
12:14You know, we are going to hopefully put out an album and then do...
12:20And then tour it.
12:21We're going to the UK, Europe in February.
12:26And we're going to...
12:27Which I don't even know if I'm supposed to say that, but I just did.
12:29So whatever.
12:30It doesn't get released until 2028.
12:32It'll be fine.
12:32Oh, perfect.
12:34Perfect.
12:35All right.
12:36Let's...
12:36Are you ready to reveal the work?
12:37Okay.
12:38Here we go.
12:38Snap.
12:38All right.
12:39I'm going to start with mine.
12:40This is my drawing.
12:42Oh, very excited about this.
12:43Wow, that is beautiful.
12:45Brad.
12:46I think so, too.
12:47Brad, that is...
12:48I also decided to draw myself.
12:50So there's this here.
12:53And this is just going to be me introducing you.
12:56There you go.
12:57Wait, that's actually awesome.
12:58That's great.
12:59That's really great.
13:00That's great.
13:00How's my hair?
13:01It looks beautiful.
13:03What does the shirt say?
13:04Oh, Death Cab or Cutie.
13:05Oh, nice.
13:06I wasn't sure if you drew abs on yourself.
13:09Don't need to draw those.
13:11Yeah, yeah, of course.
13:12No, I have them in real life.
13:13Yeah, exactly.
13:14Everybody knows that.
13:15Everyone knows that.
13:16All right, let's go around and let's show to the camera your masterful drawing.
13:21Wow.
13:23I didn't get as far as...
13:25All right.
13:26Wow, that's pretty good.
13:27I wanted to, but I might have spent a little too much time on the stage and the space.
13:31I like the structure.
13:32I like the structure.
13:33Wow.
13:33I think the only thing I want to work on next time, if I give you some constructive
13:36criticism, faces.
13:38Always open.
13:38Yeah, faces.
13:39Let's go with some faces.
13:39You know, it's a little lacking.
13:41It's a little lacking in the...
13:42Well, you don't need faces when we have the hair color.
13:45Yeah, exactly.
13:46That's a great point.
13:46That's a really good point.
13:47Holden doesn't even have a face.
13:49I was going to get there.
13:50I can tell.
13:50I was going to get there.
13:51That was, you know, that was going to be at the end.
13:53Eyes without a face.
13:55I like that.
13:56All right, Val, let's go with you.
13:58Let's see what we're doing here.
13:59All right, guys.
13:59This is an outdoor motif.
14:00Yeah, yeah.
14:01Nice, beautiful summer day.
14:03All right.
14:04With the boys.
14:05Okay.
14:06I love how you drew yourself there.
14:07Yeah, yeah, yeah, right?
14:09Do you like...
14:09That is cool.
14:09You're on the far right.
14:11Yes, I'm on the far right.
14:12Okay.
14:12Of course.
14:13All right.
14:14You look really good.
14:14Me and Holden are matches.
14:15You and Holden kind of are giving, like, Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones.
14:19Yeah, yeah, yeah.
14:20For sure.
14:21Tommy Lee Jones, correct?
14:23Can I get an outside opinion?
14:24Sure.
14:25I think it might be.
14:26Sure.
14:26Maybe.
14:27He's very sullen.
14:28Yeah.
14:28I think he's...
14:29Miles is a little upset.
14:30Miles is...
14:31Yeah, Miles...
14:31Yeah, I don't know.
14:32He's kind of...
14:32He's got a crick in his neck.
14:33Yeah, he's kind of like...
14:34He's cheeky.
14:36I think that was a sarcastic comment, correct?
14:37He's up to no good.
14:38Did you get paralyzed in the overnight?
14:40Did something happen to me?
14:42No, Miles.
14:43Something happened.
14:43Miles, he's also...
14:45I don't know what it was, but...
14:45He's also see-through.
14:47Yeah.
14:47Yeah.
14:48See, I started with the green line for some reason.
14:52I like the guys on the left just forgot pants in the morning.
14:54They got the jacket.
14:55But they forgot the rest of the pants.
14:56Brad, Brad...
14:58Art takes time and focus.
15:01And I didn't...
15:02And you didn't have that...
15:03I was rushed.
15:03I was rushed.
15:05Art is never finished.
15:06It's just abandoned.
15:06Just abandoned.
15:08You're so right.
15:08A good craftsman never blames his tools.
15:11I'm not a very good craftsman.
15:13Yeah, you broke all of our pencils when he breaks it out.
15:15I know.
15:15I broke three black pencils.
15:17Somehow.
15:18And it's on video.
15:19And it's going to be on line forever.
15:21Let's see it.
15:21Let's see it.
15:22Big reveal here.
15:23I drew us as a gang of superheroes.
15:25Oh my God, I love this.
15:27Very creative approach.
15:27And Miles, I feel really bad about...
15:30You were on the right, so I ended up having less time.
15:33So I gave you a big...
15:35Oh my God, the ass on him is fantastic.
15:38I'm making a look for it.
15:39Why did you give us bulges?
15:43Jacked with bulges.
15:44Miles has a...
15:46May I interrupt?
15:47I don't know how to feel about this.
15:48Did you give them to you guys, or are they there?
15:50They're just there.
15:50Well, they're there, you know.
15:52They're there.
15:53I didn't decide.
15:54It just existed.
15:55Yeah.
15:56Why do we all have the same bulge, though?
15:58Because I know that's not true.
15:59Also, the chiseled face is really nice.
16:04Matt's very Sigma here.
16:06Can I see you guys?
16:07He's our valiant leader.
16:08Let's wrap it up with Matt's, and then let's see what we do here.
16:12How do we get here?
16:12You know, Matt and Claude kind of run.
16:13Oh, wow.
16:14You know, you can tell there's like an inner yearning on yours because it's so minuscule.
16:20It is so tiny.
16:21My microphone kind of looks like a penis.
16:25But that's okay.
16:26Yeah, that is a dildo.
16:27Yeah.
16:27Man, I think it looks great.
16:29I like this.
16:29This is really well done.
16:30Miles has a pink drum kit.
16:32I like that.
16:33We're going to put them all on screen, and then, of course, let you know who wins in
16:36the comments, I guess.
16:37We'll do that, too.
16:38Guys, in color.
16:39In color.
16:40That was a blast.
16:41Thank you, Brad.
16:42Thanks for having us.
