Real Skills Ag Training founder Troy Smith uses video to teach foundational safety education in ag.
Transcript
00:00G'day, Troy Smith here from RealSkills Ag Training.
00:03I'm one of your Queensland nominees in the Toyota Safety and Wellbeing in Agriculture section, which is a great honour.
00:10Australia's awesome farmers are doing a mighty job of feeding and clothing the world, but they are under a tonne
00:17of pressure.
00:18Their most important responsibility is ensuring the safety and well-being of their team in what is an incredibly diverse,
00:26spread out and unpredictable workplace.
00:28Our injury and death statistics in Australian agriculture are the worst of any industry.
00:36There is no compulsory standard safety education in agriculture like the white card in construction, so it's all been left
00:43to owners and managers in the past.
00:46And while paper-based inductions might leave you compliant, a group of farmers and I reckon we could do way
00:52better using video to create that foundational safety education in agriculture.
00:58It's worked better than even I thought, and in only a couple of years we've got hundreds of farms with
01:03thousands of staff using our video-based safety inductions.
01:07Video is just great for people who didn't love school, visual learners which agriculture is just full of, people with
01:15diverse backgrounds like backpackers with English as a second language.
01:18But because we've kept them short and pumped them full of footage of the latest and greatest cool gear, even
01:25experienced people, when the videos are used as the foundation for a team meeting before a busy season like planting
01:32or harvest, are getting that valuable reminder which is so important.
01:36We've loved initial support from Cotton Australia, Queensland Farmers Federation, the Victorian Farmers Federation, and the National Farmers Federation, but
01:46I've still got a long way to go to have everyone working in Australian Ag safe by Smoko.
01:52Who's with me?
