00:00It's a summer afternoon at a local video arcade in suburban Southern California.
00:05The place is a popular hangout for teenagers, being right next door to a pizza restaurant with a two-for
00:10-one student deal,
00:11and close to a park with a pretty decent skate ramp.
00:14A group of boys, ages 14 to 16, mess around by the basketball tossing game.
00:20They quickly get bored, so now they've started climbing on the machine and throwing basketballs at each other's heads.
00:25With them are a couple of girls who they bribed into hanging out with them by getting them boba tea.
00:30All six of the kids are being incredibly loud, and the manager is considering asking them to leave.
00:36Suddenly, the doors to the arcade swing open, and over the din of beeping machines and overplayed pop music, a
00:43voice rings out.
00:44Brayden Michaels, today I will have my revenge!
00:48The group of teenagers stop joking around and turn in the direction of the voice.
00:52They dimly recognize it, and only when they turn to look do they realize who it belongs to.
00:58It's Sammy, a kid from their school who none of them have thought about much since summer vacation started.
01:03But Sammy has thought about them.
01:07Unfortunately, this encounter isn't going to go how anyone expects.
01:10The day is going to end with a level of embarrassment for everyone involved that can only be described as
01:16anomalous.

01:26Back to our epic tale.
01:28Our story really starts earlier, in the last week of school.
01:31Thursday afternoon, to be specific.
01:33Sammy's parents have dropped him off at the mall so he can see the new Demon Slayer movie.
01:38The tickets were a reward for getting his grades up from a C to a B this semester.
01:42It was a hard-won victory, but the achievement feels bittersweet.
01:46In English class, Sammy asked Amelia if she wanted to come with him.
01:50She had politely declined, telling him that she had to go to a dentist's appointment.
01:55This was a hit to his confidence, but it's not like this is the first time Sammy's ever been rejected
01:59by a girl.
02:00His mom often tells him that his problem is that he lacks confidence.
02:04As Sammy enters the mall, he passes a store that wasn't there the last time he came here.
02:09It's one of those pop-up stores that move in when another one goes out of business.
02:13The kind that mostly sell crappy toys and lame collectibles.
02:17Behind the cash register, there's a rack of katanas.
02:20The one at the very top catches Sammy's eye.
02:22But he reminds himself that he needs to save his money for popcorn and a raspberry slushie.
02:27Sammy buys his snacks and enters the theater,
02:30impatiently sitting through the same endless reel of ads that play before every movie.
02:34Just as the ads wrap up and the trailers start,
02:37Sammy hears the harsh click of a phone camera going off, followed by raucous laughter.
02:42He grips the armrest of his seat.
02:44He didn't mind if people made noise during the ads,
02:47but now they're showing a trailer for Jujutsu Kaisen Zero.
02:50He really wants to see that one, and this is the English dub,
02:53so if people talk over it, he won't know what's happening.
02:56Sammy shushes the group of kids behind him.
02:59One of them mockingly shushes back, and the rest starts snickering.
03:02Sammy remembers what his mom told him about not giving bullies the satisfaction of a response,
03:07and tries to ignore them.
03:09Before long, the opening credits roll, and Sammy is locked in.
03:13But right in the middle of the first big fight,
03:15Sammy's jolted back to reality by more loud laughter behind him.
03:19He won't stand for this.
03:20Not when he worked so hard for that bee,
03:22and when he paid fifteen dollars for that popcorn and drink.
03:26He turns around to give the other kids a piece of his mind,
03:28and his heart sinks.
03:30Sitting among the group is Amelia,
03:32her shocked face illuminated by the light of the screen.
03:35I thought you were at the dentist!
03:37Sammy hisses.
03:38The other kids react to this with shocked gasps and scandalized laughter.
03:42Yeah, no, but...
03:44Amelia stammers.
03:45Brayden invited me before you, and I'd already said yes.
03:48I didn't want it to be awkward.
03:50Whatever.
03:51Sammy mumbles.
03:52Can you guys at least be quiet?
03:54Sorry, says Brayden.
03:56I didn't realize this was, like, your house.
03:59Sammy doesn't want to turn this into a big thing,
04:01so he turns back around.
04:02A few seconds later,
04:04a piece of popcorn hits the back of his head.
04:07Sammy whips around and stands up, unable to stop himself.
04:10He opens his mouth to start yelling at Brayden,
04:12but his quick movement causes his popcorn
04:15and semi-frozen raspberry drink to spill everywhere.
04:18Brayden and his friends howl with laughter.
04:20Amelia covers her eyes and cringes at Sammy like he's a car accident.
04:25Sammy has no choice at this point but to leave the theater.
04:28His clothes are sticky.
04:30His face is bright red.
04:31He's on the verge of tears.
04:33He texts his mom to come pick him up.
04:35On the way out, he passes that pop-up shop again.
04:38He sees the katanas.
04:40His eyes fall again on the sword at the top of the rack.
04:43It reminds him of Tanjiro's sword,
04:46and he has the thought that if Tanjiro was in this situation,
04:49he wouldn't accept defeat.
04:51How much for that katana?
04:53Sammy asks the man behind the counter.
04:55The man picks it up to read the tag.
04:57He hands the boy the sword with a gravely serious expression.
05:01It's $150, he says, but you must be sure you want it.
05:06This is a weapon of immense power.
05:09Sammy nods.
05:11He's more sure of this than he's ever been of anything in his life.
05:15When he gets into his mom's Honda Accord a few minutes later,
05:18he tells her about the incident with Brayden and Amelia.
05:20She asks why he has a katana.
05:23He does not tell her how much it cost.
05:25Once Sammy's home, he goes straight to his room to examine his prize.
05:29Once it's in his hand, he can immediately tell how well balanced it is.
05:33He gives it an exploratory swing and feels a rush of power like nothing he's ever felt before.
05:39Finally, he's found the key to self-confidence.
05:42And before the summer's over, he makes a vow to himself
05:45that he's going to kick Brayden Michaels' butt in front of Amelia and all of their annoying friends.
05:51Unfortunately for Sammy, what he thinks is a legendary sword of destiny
05:55is actually SCP-572, the katana of apparent invincibility.
06:00This anomalous item is a replica katana, poorly balanced for combat,
06:05made of subpar steel and with a dull edge.
06:07But for all its faults, it possesses a hypnotic effect on anyone who holds it.
06:13They become convinced not only of the sword's high quality,
06:16but also of their own skill.
06:18And seemingly no force on earth can change their mind.
06:21Under the thrall of SCP-572,
06:24Sammy spends hours training in the backyard for his duel with Brayden.
06:28He wakes each morning before sunset to train,
06:31first using the blade to chop firewood.
06:33The logs split with ease under the powerful force of each swing.
06:36It's amazing, Sammy thinks,
06:38how the blade never seems to dull no matter how many times he uses it to chop wood.
06:43The blacksmith who forged it must have been a truly generational craftsman.
06:47Sammy wipes the sweat from his brow
06:49and looks from the pile of firewood to the lemon tree next to the fence.
06:53A true swordsman, he knows, requires more than just force to win a duel.
06:57He requires precision and finesse.
07:00With the battle cry that would make any shounen protagonist proud,
07:03Sammy charges across the yard and leaps into the air.
07:06With one sword swing, he easily slices three lemons in half while they're still on the tree.
07:11He lands in a perfect samurai pose and sheathes his katana.
07:15Heh, says Sammy.
07:17Easy.
07:18Sammy's parents watch all of this from the kitchen window while they drink their coffee.
07:22They see him impotently swing at the woodpile for several minutes, knocking logs everywhere.
07:27Multiple times, the sword flies out of Sammy's grip and lands in the grass.
07:30He runs three feet from the shed to the lemon tree, jumps about two inches in the air and drops
07:36the sword again.
07:36When he goes to pick it up, the blade comes loose from the hilt and falls to the ground.
07:41At least he's having fun and getting some fresh air, says Sammy's mom.
07:46After five days of intense training, Sammy knows that he's almost strong enough to beat up Brayden Michaels.
07:52But cutting fruit and firewood isn't going to cut it.
07:55He needs to test his might against a moving target.
07:58While his parents are at work, he walks out the front door and onto the sidewalk.
08:03Some people will call him crazy for what he's about to do.
08:05But people also told Tanjiro that he couldn't defeat an upper-ranked demon.
08:10Sammy spots a single car rolling down the street.
08:12He limbers up with a few stretches and visualizes his end goal.
08:16Brayden laying on the ground and crying for his mom while all the other kids laugh at him.
08:21As the car passes, Sammy runs across the road.
08:24He unsheathes his katana with nearly imperceptible speed, so fast that to an observer,
08:30it probably only looks like he lightly pulled on the hilt.
08:33The driver of the car slams on the brakes and lays on the horn before getting out.
08:37The hell are you doing running in front of me like that?
08:40The driver yells.
08:41Sammy folds his arms, giving the man a smug look.
08:44I think it's me who's done the hitting here today, he says with a smirk.
08:49Before the man can say anything, his car splits in half.
08:53There's only a second where either Sammy or the driver can appreciate the surgical precision of the cut
08:58before the bisected engine catches fire and the entire car explodes.
09:03Sammy walks back home, the car still on fire behind him.
09:08Of course, from the driver's perspective, the events unfold quite differently.
09:12From his point of view, a teenage boy just Naruto ran into the road and bounced off the hood of
09:16his car.
09:17Thankfully, he wasn't driving very fast, so the kid was able to get to his feet again eventually.
09:22The driver yells at him, to which the kid, pained and out of breath, responds something about hitting
09:27before limping back across the street and up the path to one of the houses.
09:31Confused, the driver gets back in his car and continues on his way, hoping nobody saw any of that.
09:37This brings us back to the fated showdown between Sammy and Brayden at the arcade.
09:42Sammy's mom agrees to drive him there, but on the condition that he doesn't bring the katana.
09:46Don't worry, mother, says Sammy, who is sitting on his knees on the living room floor
09:51and holding the sheathed sword reverently with both hands.
09:54I made a promise on the day this sword was forged that I would never abuse its power by fighting
09:58dishonorably.
09:59The duel between me and Brayden will only be until first blood.
10:03I think that will sufficiently teach him his lesson.
10:06That's not really what I meant when I said it was dangerous, says Sammy's mom,
10:10who has seen her son hit himself in the face four times this morning.
10:14Sammy stands up and slides the katana through the belt loop of his jeans.
10:18This is a matter of honor, he says in an extremely condescending tone of voice.
10:23I wouldn't expect you to understand.
10:25Sammy's mother immediately sends him to his room and leaves for work without giving him any arcade money.
10:30This is a major setback.
10:33Sammy anxiously watches the clock on his bedside table.
10:36It's already noon.
10:37He knows that Brayden and his gang will be at the skate park now,
10:40and they'll probably head to the arcade soon.
10:43If he can't get there in time, they'll leave, and then he'll have to wait until next weekend.
10:48By that time, Brayden could have prepared a counterattack against him.
10:51But any setbacks are temporary.
10:54Sammy opens his bedroom window and assesses his escape route.
10:57It's a straight drop down, probably about 20 feet.
11:00He climbs out legs first as quietly as possible and crouches on the windowsill before leaping.
11:05As he falls, he swings the katana so powerfully and expertly that it creates a cushion of air resistance,
11:11breaking his fall.
11:13The bushes under the window definitely also help.
11:15Sammy expertly vaults over the fence and runs to the bus stop just in time to get on the right
11:20line to get to the arcade.
11:21Which brings us to the beginning of our video.
11:24Sammy challenging Brayden to a duel in front of all his friends.
11:28I will defend my honor, Sammy proclaims.
11:32Brayden is at a loss for words at first, then after a minute he remembers.
11:37Oh right, this is the kid who spilled popcorn all over himself at the movie theater and ran away crying.
11:41Even at this distance, he can tell that the sword is just a cheap toy.
11:45He scoffs.
11:46Get lost.
11:48Brayden throws one of the basketballs from the basketball game at Sammy's head.
11:51Sammy lets out a yell and swings his katana.
11:54Probably a full 15 seconds after the ball has already gone past him.
11:58He pants exaggeratedly.
12:00One of Brayden's friends takes his phone out to film.
12:03Surprised that I could cut that ball in half so quickly?
12:05Sammy taunts.
12:07Well, let's just say I've been training.
12:10Brayden doesn't dignify that with a response.
12:12His friends laugh in disbelief and keep filming.
12:15Don't turn your back on me, coward!
12:17Sammy yells.
12:18He runs at Brayden and whacks him on the back.
12:21It hurts about as much as being hit with a stick.
12:23Brayden's friends whoop and holler.
12:25He got you, dude.
12:26Says the one with the camera.
12:28Brayden turns towards Sammy.
12:30Whose face goes white with shock.
12:32Oh, you deflected my attack.
12:34He stammers.
12:35How?
12:36Brayden winds his fist back and socks Sammy in the jaw.
12:40His friends erupt into cheers and laughter.
12:42Sammy staggers back in shock, dropping the katana.
12:45As soon as it's out of his hands, Sammy is overcome by a sense of clarity.
12:50He remembers being hit by a car, falling out the window.
12:53So, completely failing to cut all those lemons in half, he looks at the katana and sees it
12:57for what it is.
12:58Cheap, decorative crap.
13:00He has no idea what had gotten into him.
13:02At this point, the manager finally decides he needs to step in.
13:06All right, out of here, all you.
13:08He grumbles, grabbing Sammy by the collar of his shirt and shoving him towards the exit.
13:12He spots the katana on the floor.
13:14You're lucky I don't call the cops on you for bringing a weapon in here.
13:17The manager picks up the sword.
13:20Immediately, he's enthralled by the gleam of its perfectly balanced steel blade.
13:24He turns back to the kids and points his sword, a resolute expression on his face.
13:29They're like the bandits in an old Kurosawa picture, and he's the samurai about to send
13:34them packing.
13:35And if you dare to start trouble in this establishment again, he growls, narrowing his eyes, I won't
13:42hesitate to kill you where you stand.
