00:00Six takeaways from the college football weekend.
00:01B. Scott starts.
00:02It was a great weekend just to have football back.
00:06But I'm going to start with this and keep it local here.
00:09I'm going to call my shot now.
00:11U of H is the sleeper in the Big 12.
00:14I know that there are more impressive teams.
00:16I understand, of course, Texas Tech is loaded.
00:19And they better be for all of the money that they've paid for their teams over the last couple of
00:23years.
00:23So, of course, if Texas Tech goes on to win the Big 12, I won't be shocked.
00:27But nobody is really talking about the Cougs outside of Houston, maybe even outside of Third Ward in the Midtown
00:34area, right?
00:35Just the inner Coug community realizes what Willie Fritz is putting together over there.
00:41And I was really impressed from watching them.
00:44I understand that they're only just going against Oregon State, right?
00:47I get it.
00:47They only beat them by 13 points.
00:50But I saw some things from this team.
00:52Of course, Conor Wegman is the marquee player, probably one of the more slept-on quarterbacks because I don't think
00:57he gets talked about a lot in the quarterback conversation.
01:00But he is, I think, one of the better quarterbacks in the country.
01:04He looked like it yesterday against Oregon State, albeit against Oregon State.
01:08The running back that they brought in who was at Tulane with Willie Fritz at one point.
01:14And I think last year he was either at Oregon or somewhere where he rode the bench and didn't have
01:17much of an impact.
01:19But now he's reunited with Willie Fritz, Makai Hughes, and he almost had 100 yards rushing yesterday.
01:26I thought, like, really at all three levels, running the ball and their wide receivers, Amari Thomas, Kobe Young.
01:33Thomas had a sick catch spin move, and I think he almost scored, or maybe he did score.
01:38He did score.
01:39I was annoyed by his finger point, my old man yelling at a cloud moment.
01:42But the spin move was awesome to break out of those two guys.
01:45They've got a trio of wide receivers.
01:46I think Trent Walker is actually the Oregon State transfer, so he was playing against his old team.
01:51But between Amari Thomas, Kobe Young, Trent Walker, and the tight end transfer that they brought in, Patrick Overmeyer,
01:59I think they've got something at all three levels.
02:01Running the ball, tight ends, receivers.
02:05Obviously, the quarterback is really good.
02:06I was impressed with the Cougars, and I'm not even talking about the pass rusher, Latravian McCutcheon,
02:14who was probably the best player on the field, period.
02:17So kudos to the Cougs, obviously winning the game.
02:19But I think they're one of the more underrated teams in the Big 12 right now.
02:22Also, that entrance, holy crap.
02:24That was awesome.
02:25Yeah.
02:25With the Cadillac?
02:26With the candy paint Cadillac, yeah.
02:28Ooh, that was cool.
02:29That was cool.
02:30And somebody said that the Titans saw it and were already mad that they can't steal it.
02:36Also, did anyone see that streaker get bundled?
02:39They didn't show it, but I heard the play-by-play.
02:42There are a couple of dudes.
02:43I know Joseph Duarte from the Houston Chronicle, who's been covering the Cougars forever,
02:46and a couple of other folks caught it on camera.
02:48Okay, I missed it.
02:49And he got absolutely bundled.
02:52Gotta say, very annoyed that Dr. Dre on 290 said that that looks like you, Paul.
02:58That looked like you, the guy getting tackled.
02:59That would absolutely never happen to me.
03:01I would last a very long time if I was out on that field.
03:03Well, sorry, security, I'm fast, and I'm shifting.
03:06Well, this guy did last a while, though.
03:08I think he did move around a little bit.
03:10No head on a swivel, man.
03:11Like, he didn't, once that security guard, like, he's always looking to his right at this,
03:15like, big, no offense, donut-eating-looking mother bleeper.
03:18No offense, no offense.
03:19You look a little happy.
03:20You don't look that fast.
03:21But this guy, once he saw that he was not paying attention to him, you see him.
03:27He might have played football back in the day, this cop that comes from the end zone.
03:32Once he sees him look right, oh, man, he squares up, and he really speeds up, and boom!
03:38Yeah, I heard it was a good form tackle.
03:40It was a good form tackle, yeah.
03:41It was a good tackle.
03:42No, it was a good day for the Cougs.
03:44You also saw a brief glimpse of the number one freshman quarterback.
03:48Yes, yes, he threw a pass.
03:49Sean Anderson, yeah, third and 18 after Connor Wegman left the game, because I think his helmet
03:55came off.
03:56He threw it into the end zone.
03:57Yep.
03:57College football six-pack continues.
04:00I wish week one had better games.
04:02I wish that we had a couple of games, and I know everyone's so scared of out-of-conference
04:07games.
04:07You don't want to give yourself that big loss that ultimately cost you.
04:10But with the college football playoff expanding and expanding and expanding, this is not going
04:14to hurt you in the way that you think it will.
04:17So why can't we have more inter-conference games like LSU and Clemson used to be?
04:22Because Clemson isn't good anymore.
04:23Why can't we have more games like that?
04:25Ranked teams were 20-0 because Oregon rallied and won, and on top of that, Michigan rallied
04:31and won because of some BS.
04:32Yeah.
04:32And that was the worst call I've seen in quite some time.
04:35Ranked teams were 20-0, and the average score was 48-8.
04:38The only one-possession games were Oregon and Michigan, and a two-possession game got
04:44switched out, Cougs game, to the Texas game in the middle of it.
04:48And I finally understand that Cougs inferiority complex and started looking at Texas with a
04:52little bit of a side-eye after that moment in time.
04:54Yeah, I hate to even admit this, but I was, of course, as somebody that grew up a Texas
04:58fan, I was kind of okay with it.
05:01Yeah, of course you were.
05:03And I'm sitting up there.
05:04My girlfriend, of course, is also a Texas fan.
05:06She's from Austin.
05:07So both of us are like, thanks ESPN for understanding what we're really here for.
05:10No, that was ridiculous.
05:11And I felt bad for Houston, but at the same time, I'm like, let's get on with it.
05:16Y'all were playing Texas State.
05:18Let's stop.
05:18Let's stop.
05:19Yeah, but give me a little arch.
05:21Give me a little arch.
05:23Give me a little wingo.
05:25Let me get that in my life.
05:27Here's how that switch from the Cougs game to the Texas game sounded on ESPN.
05:328, 6, to 20.
05:34One score game.
05:37No guilt.
05:38Look at this man.
05:39For those watching on ESPN, we'll send you over to Alyssa Lang.
05:44And you don't want to watch the remainder of this game.
05:47They got rid of the ticker.
05:48With 9.02 to go.
05:49There's no ticker.
05:50ESPN News.
05:51ESPN News.
05:53ESPN News.
05:53Where is that?
05:54I don't know.
05:55Who has ESPN News?
05:56I mean, again, if you want to continue to watch that one, head over to ESPN News.
06:00We're about to send you out to Austin, Texas for the Longhorn season opener against Texas State.
06:05E.J. Manuel, Alyssa Lang here with you.
06:06I couldn't find it.
06:07I have not watched ESPN News since like maybe 2003, 2002.
06:11I don't think every cable subscription has it anymore.
06:14I don't think Fubo TV has it.
06:15What is it at this point?
06:17Good question.
06:18Because they don't even really do SportsCenter like that.
06:20Is that where the SportsCenter people are now on ESPN News?
06:23I'm guessing.
06:24Do they even do news anymore?
06:25Dude, I don't think so.
06:26No, that was rough.
06:27That was rough.
06:28I empathize with Cougs fans.
06:29And you look smart.
06:31It's Texas State, dude.
06:32I know.
06:33I know.
06:33Next up, college football six-pack.
06:35What you got?
06:35Yeah, so speaking of which, Texas.
06:39So my Texas thing, and I'm trying to remember the ESPN reporter who actually did this take already
06:46of this being the year that they basically got Texas wrong, swapped Texas in how they were viewed.
06:53Like last year, they were thought to be the best team in the country.
06:56At one point, and it was just a little bit early.
06:59And then this year, they're like a little bit further down.
07:02Fifth.
07:02You know, fifth or lower in a lot of people's view.
07:04And it's like, I think you got it wrong.
07:06I think this was the year to overhype Texas if you're going to do it.
07:09And last year was not.
07:11So I say all that to say, I think Texas is back, guys.
07:15Oh, God.
07:16I think that they're back, man.
07:17This thing looked, and it's not just because it was against Texas State, because of course
07:22they were going to pulverize Texas State.
07:24I just think that overall, kind of similar to the Cougs, but even more so, like on steroids,
07:31they don't really seem to have much weaknesses, especially offensively.
07:36They've got a really good defense.
07:37They brought back Will Muschamp, and that looks like a thing.
07:41Now, of course, you're grading it on the curve because they're doing it against Texas State.
07:44What's it going to look like against Ohio State this coming week?
07:47I think it's going to be the major test for them.
07:50We'll see whether this take that I have right now is even valid, if they can hang with the
07:54big boys, and I think Ohio State is actually that.
07:57But from what I saw, or from what it looks like in trying to project it, Texas looks this
08:02year the way that they were trying to describe them last year, but we're doing so way prematurely.
08:08Okay, let's see what happens on that front.
08:11College football six-pack continues, so another one from this Texas-Texas State game.
08:15Man, some of these games, it's just hot as balls out there.
08:18I couldn't do it.
08:19DKR on a hot day is a terrible, terrible time.
08:25So this game at 2.30 kickoff, brutal.
08:27The last time I went to DKR was for Texas-Alabama, the Bryce Young game, and I remember on the
08:33way out of the game, me and my friends, and we all went to see the game together, we were
08:39walking for a mile looking for water, because every single convenience store in Austin was
08:46out, and we walked legitimately a mile to go to a restaurant, and when we sat down, we
08:51weren't actually looking for alcoholic drinks.
08:54We were looking literally for water.
08:57Yeah, you needed hydration so you could, at one point, hopefully drink alcohol.
09:01Right.
09:01If you survived yesterday at Texas-Texas State, shout out to you.
09:07I made fun of USC fans for not showing up against San Jose State, but hey, Texas fans
09:12did show up for this game against Texas State, who is inconsequential in the grand scheme
09:17of things, and that was not a fun time, I would imagine.
09:20Dude, I cannot imagine, and it's really the reason why I don't really like going to the
09:26college football games, because most of them are outdoors.
09:29Like, I wanted to go to U of H, Oregon State yesterday, but it was at 11 o'clock in
09:36the
09:36day, and of course, the rain ended up helping out with the temperature eventually, but then
09:40you're out there in a humid rain delay, and that doesn't sound like much fun, even if it's
09:47a little bit cooler.
09:48So, it is the deterrent for me in even going to any of these college games, because they
09:52don't have, most of them don't have domes, or roofs.
09:55Which I like, but this time of year, it's rough.
10:00Yeah, being where I'm from, living where we live, I don't like it as much.
10:04Someone points out, hey, Baylor-Auburn was a one-point game.
10:07Auburn won when Baylor tried a two-point conversion to win the game and didn't make it.
10:12All right, B. Scott, crack open number five.
10:15That's it.
10:15They just hit it.
10:17Baylor, what are we doing?
10:21Go ahead and kick that extra point, man.
10:23I was shocked now, I wonder if part of it, if part of it was that DJ Lagway was out
10:28there
10:29performing on one foot, because he'd had some kind of ankle situation, or if you looked
10:34at his right foot, it was taped up, like, and he was out there hobbling on one foot
10:38like he was Byron Leftwich or somebody out there.
10:40So, that could have been part of it.
10:42They just didn't want to expose their quarterback to any kind of, like, further injury if they
10:46had to play longer.
10:46But, what are we doing?
10:49And also, DJ Lagway, have we as a college football community, college football watching community
10:54decided whether he's good or not at this point?
10:56As a Florida Gator fan, I'm out.
10:58Yeah.
10:59I believed going into last year, and I remember they had that SEC Netflix show, and they took
11:06it behind the scenes with Florida, and they were showing so much.
11:08Graham Ertz, Houston Texans legend.
11:10And I just remember the whole time, I'm like, oh, God, Ertz, he's trying to make me like
11:15him.
11:15I just want more Lagway, and I wanted that head coach to be out.
11:18But, yeah, Lagway was a failure for me, and Baylor, best of luck, man.
11:23He's got talent.
11:24There's no denying it, but it's sort of the same thing with Anthony Richardson.
11:27It's just inconsistent.
11:29Dude, I'm rooting for the guy.
11:30He's from Willis, but the truth of the matter is, that two-point conversion actually probably
11:34works if he has a more accurate ball there, and he was all over the place all night.
11:39Now, again, he was injured, but that play and that play call would have worked if he
11:45throws a better ball, kind of leads the guy kind of going forward instead of it being
11:49behind him and allowing the linebacker, whoever it was, to stop him right there at the goal
11:54line.
11:54Like, a better ball from the quarterback wins that game.
11:58I'm out on him, too, I think.
12:00Pretty sure.
12:01Not I think.
12:01I'm out on him, too.
12:03One last to open up in the college football six-pack.
12:07This is my old man yelling out of the cloud moment.
12:09Let's hear it.
12:10So, in that Texas State-Texas game, there was a sequence of two plays where Texas Tech
12:16got a first down over the middle of the field, and the person, down 28-0, unironically got
12:22up and did the first down signal.
12:24And then, some fellow for Texas State, not too long afterwards, scored a touchdown and
12:29had what I thought was a visit from spirits from beyond, as he was emphatically yapping,
12:38yapping, and barking like a dog.
12:41You're down 28-7, and I am, the more I see stuff like this, also that guy in the Cougs
12:48who, after the spin move, he's pointing towards the end zone, and he almost got caught at the
12:51one-yard line.
12:51Man, far be it for me to be the old man yelling at a cloud saying, there's too much
12:56showmanship out there.
12:58These guys need to just give the ball to the referee when they score a touchdown.
13:02This is what you sound like.
13:04But, I'm sorry.
13:05If you're losing by that much, and you're doing any celebration whatsoever, you look
13:10like such a dork try-hard who clearly doesn't care about a team game.
13:15You care about what you just did in that one moment.
13:18You like it.
13:18You're a little glory boy.
13:19You like your show pony moment.
13:20I'm sorry, you're down 28-7.
13:22Give the ball to the referee.
13:23And if it's a two-score game, then we can actually do stuff like that.
13:26That is somebody, I agree that it's a little bit more selfish than what you would prefer,
13:31but that is definitely somebody that has already accepted the fact that they're not
13:34competing against this team.
13:35Winning the game is not even a part of the equation, so can I have a moment?
13:40Can I have my own individual moment against a better opponent?
13:44And so I'm just going to live in my own world here.
13:46That's definitely what's happening there.
13:47They have divorced themselves from the whole team concept at that point.
13:50It drove me crazy because it felt like in that moment of the game, B. Scott, on that drive,
13:54it felt like Texas had their backups in because there was another play down the middle where
13:58the Texas State receiver dropped the ball in the end zone.
14:00It should have been a touchdown.
14:01I mean, it was right in his hands.
14:02And I don't know if it was that same guy who was ultimately celebrating at the end.
14:06I was just very annoyed in that moment in time.
14:08I mean, let's be real.
14:09If you play at Texas State, don't you probably wish you played at Texas?
14:12I don't know.
14:13Texas State, less expectations.
14:16Not the school part, you know, because Texas State is a really good time.
14:21Texas State is probably a better time than Texas.
14:22If you've ever been, highly recommend it.
14:24It's a really, really good time.
14:25Texas State.
14:26But, I mean, obviously, for football purposes, you'd probably rather play for the Longhorns.
14:30So, if you make a play on their field, you're going to try to rub it in possibly.
14:35But I'm with you.
14:36It is like eye roll.
14:38Go ahead and go sit in the corner somewhere, man.
14:40You're losing by a lot.
14:41Get to the sideline.
14:42Come on.
14:42It's a team game.
14:43He is B. Scott.
14:43I'm Paul Galanet, an old man.
