Is there an actual solution so we don't have clock problems again?
Transcript
00:00Gator heads or tails?
00:02Tails.
00:03It is a head I will receive.
00:06All right, Doug, question number one.
00:07In the wake of ClockGate, what are your best suggestions or maybe suggestions you've heard
00:12to help fix the vulnerabilities in the system that led to all this controversy?
00:15Okay, this story is amazing because I've spent much of my week digging into what the hell happened.
00:22Nobody gave this a thought before Saturday night.
00:25I reached out to Michigan.
00:26I reached out to the Big Ten, and I used sources from other conferences.
00:30The best system money can buy is the Hawkeye system.
00:34The NFL has implemented it, and the Big Ten built a state-of-the-art review center that
00:41rivals the NFL and implemented the Hawkeye system.
00:45There is mixed reporting on whether the SEC has it or not, but not everybody does.
00:50But even the Hawkeye system has its vulnerabilities, as we've seen.
00:53And one of the problems is when you sync up the broadcast with reality and overlay video,
00:59according to the guy who runs the ACC network, as long as you are putting graphics over live
01:03video, there are going to be delay issues.
01:07With that said, should you use the system that the NFL uses, which is apparently currently the
01:13best that money can buy?
01:14Or should you go with a standard system that all conferences can adhere to, because not
01:20everybody has the Hawkeye system?
01:23Conferences are responsible for their own review systems and their own officials.
01:27But again, there's no uniformity across the board.
01:30What the NCAA announced that they're going to use the TV feed now is fine, I guess.
01:36But that means the Big Ten has to shelf what they've been using, which is what the NFL uses.
01:42So I just wish every conference would just get the best system that money can buy, the
01:48one the NFL uses.
01:49Well, I think what they've got, their decision now to go with the scoreboard slash TV timer
01:57or clock, I think that's the way it should be.
01:58And that actually was a suggestion that the NCAA had to officials anyway.
02:03It's like, this is what we recommend you use.
02:06Um, I, it's, it just makes all the sense of world.
02:09Everybody is on the same page.
02:11You're watching on TV.
02:11You know what the clock is.
02:12You're watching it at the stadium.
02:14You know where the clock is.
02:15It shouldn't be that difficult to go with.
02:18Uh, the problem I had with what happened on Saturday is that you had a stoppage at nine
02:23seconds and the official literally said, Hey, game clock operator.
02:28Can you reset the clock to nine seconds?
02:30If things can't be synced up for nine seconds, then your system is screwed up.
02:35So just go with what you have on top of that.
02:37When you have a situation like you did, why not explain to the people, the a hundred thousand
02:43people that are there or whatever it was, 90,000 at that point, explain to them what
02:47you guys just talked about, because all you did was come back and say, Hey, we've, we're
02:52putting a second back on the clock.
02:53Well, why are you putting a second back on the clock?
02:56Because the video you released two hours later explains in pretty good detail of why you
03:00made your decision, whether people agree with it or not.
03:02But I think that they're getting to the right thing to do, which is what everybody sees.
03:06Yeah.
03:07I'm not sure there's an ultimate fix.
03:09I mean, when you feel like you got taken advantage of or robbed, no explanation, whether
03:12it's true or not, it's going to take that feeling away.
03:14You know what I mean?
03:15You already feel like, Hey, I've been, I've been done wrong here.
03:18My only suggestion, I guess one or two of his suggestions, one is you have to immediately
03:23release that video or audio of the officials talking right away.
03:27You cannot wait till a day later.
03:28You got to do that right away.
03:29And number two is if you're going to use any clock, it has to be the clock on the field
03:34because that's what the players are going by.
03:37Who cares about the TV at home crowd?
03:38I want that to be synced up with the clock on the field too.
03:41Don't get me wrong, but the one on the field should be the ultimate because that's what the
03:45players are using.
03:46That's what the coaches are using.
03:47That's what the referees and officials are using.
03:49That's the clock that has to be the ultimate say.
03:51One other easy thing is just to add decimal points too, but sorry.
03:57All right.
03:57Both Boise and Western Michigan lost to ranked teams.
04:00Should either or both be ranked in the top 25 despite losing?
04:06I'm pretty sure they both should not be, but I'll make the case for Western.
04:10I mean, they had the lead when the clock hit all zeros, so they thought that they had won
04:13the game and in some cases they had won the game, but it's not going to be.
04:18They confounded the Wolverines after the first drive of the game.
04:22Michigan got nothing going whatsoever.
04:25Whereas if you look at the Boise State Oregon game, I mean, Oregon ended up doubling them
04:32up in the second half.
04:33They outscored them, I think, 20 to 10 in the second half of that game.
04:36So because of that, I kind of ruled out Boise.
04:40Boise had their chance and let it slip away in the second half.
04:42They were dominated.
04:43But Western played with Michigan and played better than Michigan.
04:47They didn't make the mistakes.
04:48They didn't turn the ball over.
04:49They didn't commit the dumb penalties.
04:51They took what was there, which was a bunch of field goals, and they thought they had knocked
04:54off the Michigan Wolverines.
04:56That's the case to be made from being in the top 25, even though you lost.
04:59Of course they should be ranked.
05:01I think the wins and losses doesn't necessarily tell you how good you are compared to everybody
05:07else.
05:08Not only should Boise be ranked, Western should be ranked, Louisville should be ranked.
05:13And Boise, they're mad about non-pass interference calls that would have continued their final
05:19drive and take No.
05:205 Oregon or No.
05:226 Oregon into overtime.
05:25The eyeball test, just because you played up a level, and both of them were punching
05:30up, Boise and Western, and Louisville to an extent, just because you punched up and lost
05:35doesn't mean you're not one of the top 25 teams in the country.
05:38And interestingly enough, Boise travels to Kalamazoo at the end of the month.
05:42It's crazy.
05:43Well, I definitely don't think Western should be ranked because they lost to Michigan, who
05:47is not ranked.
05:48So to me, it'd be weird if one team was 1-0 against that team, who was 0-1, and
05:53the 0-1
05:53team is ranked, and the 1-0 team is not ranked.
05:56So that's weird.
05:56To me, Boise, they have a little bit better case, but I would still leave them out.
06:00The only team that hasn't won a game that is ranked is Louisville, but they're ranked
06:03higher, and they dropped in the rankings.
06:05And so that makes more sense to me, though.
06:07But as far as Western and Boise is concerned, neither team should be ranked.
06:11All right.
06:12Ohio State is favored by one and a half points at Texas.
06:15Which side do you like here?
06:17Okay, Gator, you've seen me in this position before.
06:19I root for Big Ten supremacy.
06:21Tennessee, and in this game, even, yes, Ohio State.
06:24But I also enjoy it when they lose, if that makes any sense.
06:29Both these teams overwhelmed undermanned opponents in Week 1.
06:33It's hard to choose.
06:34In fact, there's not much to choose between these two teams.
06:37And this is the simplest of football analysis.
06:39I'm taking the home team, Texas.
06:41I understand that.
06:42Look, I like the Buckeyes.
06:43I think they have the better roster.
06:46It's going to be close.
06:47It should be close, though.
06:48So Texas does have that home field advantage, which it does matter.
06:52But the Longhorns seem to like, when you look at the box score afterwards in their game against Texas State,
06:57they gave a bunch of yards last week.
07:00And Texas State was actually pretty efficient in throwing the football as well.
07:03So worry about that pass defense.
07:05That's Texas State.
07:06It's not Ohio State.
07:07Ohio State's coming at you with an experienced quarterback and the best receiver, if not the best player in the
07:12country.
07:13It's a whole other different animal they're going to have to deal with.
07:16And I think it's going to show why Ohio State's the top dog in college football.
07:20Great early season matchup here.
07:22I think the key to the game is going to be the line of scrimmage.
07:25I like the Buckeyes to win the line of scrimmage.
07:28So ultimately, I like the Buckeyes to win the game.
07:30After an early 45-yard run versus Texas State had.
07:34I'm sorry, Texas had it versus Texas State.
07:36They only had 111 yards rushing the rest of the way.
07:39Ain't going to be, you know, it's going to be a lot harder against Ohio State than it is against
07:43Texas Tech.
07:43So I expect Patrician, the defense, to out-duel Muschamp and Texas' defense.
07:48Both teams have offensive power, obviously.
07:51But in the end, I think Texas struggles more to score points like Ohio State.
07:57All right, Lane Kiffin.
07:59Is he good or bad for college football?
08:02I think he's great for college football.
08:04He's exactly what we need.
08:06This guy should wear a black cape.
08:07He is the villain that we all need to hate.
08:10He'd be the perfect professional wrestling heel manager.
08:13And he's entertaining as hell.
08:16All that said, I can't stand him.
08:17I can't stand what he did in leaving Ole Miss to get to LSU.
08:20I can't stand what he's done with this whole roster manipulation thing.
08:24I can't stand that he's always leaving one program for the next best thing.
08:29He's got FOMO worse than anybody else I've ever seen.
08:33However, he's also one hell of a coach.
08:37He pushes the envelope to the edge and beyond, just like Jim Harbaugh used to do.
08:40But he doesn't leave a trail of embarrassment in his wake.
08:43He's operating within the rules as far as he knows.
08:46And look, he can coach a roster, that's for sure.
08:49I would argue strongly he is leaving a trail of embarrassment in his wake.
08:52And I also think I would never let my kid play for this chud.
08:56I mean, honestly, as a leader of young men acting this way, he sets a terrible example.
09:02He's not respectable at all.
09:04And quite frankly, I think he's terrible for college football.
09:08Short-term interest, yeah, but I don't want a wrestling heel coaching my football team.
09:13I think he's ultimately good for college football, Gator.
09:15I agree with you.
09:16Sports is entertainment.
09:17And in the entertainment business, you need storylines.
09:20You need heroes.
09:21You need villains.
09:22Lane Kiffin is the perfect villain.
09:24Cheer or boo, just don't stand there and do nothing.
09:26This is what advertisers and TV execs want.
09:29That's why they love rankings.
09:30Rankings before the preseason, before the season starts, they mean nothing.
09:34But it gets the people going.
09:36And it's just another way for them to talk about the game.
09:38They can advertise it more.
09:43All right, is the SEC taking things too far with LSU by threatening expulsion?
09:50I mean, it worked, all right?
09:52I'm not in the trenches with this story, but LSU opted not to add the players to their roster today.
09:58And it's their final roster.
09:59So I don't think they were taking it too far.
10:01They were trying to control the members in their conference.
10:04And they said, LSU, if you want to be in our conference, you follow our rules, period.
10:08So it worked.
10:09And I don't think they took it too far.
10:11It worked, but I'm glad they didn't get to the expulsion part because I thought this was all about timing
10:16when it comes with this.
10:17The threat and the timing just didn't sync up.
10:20If this had been a couple months ago, I thought that they could have thrown that threat out and gotten
10:25something done.
10:26But eventually this does work here.
10:29Circumstances different before than what they are right now.
10:32So I thought that the expulsion was like an atom bomb that you're throwing at them when they didn't need
10:38to do that.
10:39You just need to impose fines or suspensions on LSU to get them to conform.
10:44But they chose the latter, and it did work out.
10:47It definitely felt extreme when I read about it, heard about it right away.
10:50But they were done.
10:52They didn't want it.
10:53Enough is enough.
10:54We're using it now.
10:55We're using our trump card right now.
10:57And it worked.
10:59But going back to entertainment and storylines, I would have loved to see an LSU get kicked out and join
11:04the Big Ten.
11:05I don't know if it's done, though.
11:07Yeah, it's never.
11:08Louisiana's got a lot of power brokers in politics that are all lining up right now and back in LSU.
11:13And I hope this doesn't rear its ugly head.
11:16And next thing you know, we're litigating it again.
11:18And we're talking about a roster manipulation for next week's game.
11:25All right, the two teams that played for the national title, Miami and Indiana.
11:28They both replaced their quarterbacks, and they didn't lose a beat.
11:32Who's more likely to get back to the national title game?
11:35Well, it's all going to come down to injuries and which team is healthier, because that's just how things go.
11:40That being said, I'm going to bank on Miami getting back to the championship game because of their schedule.
11:46They only have Notre Dame, really, to worry about, whereas the Hoosiers have Ohio State, USC, and Washington as ranked
11:53foes.
11:54And if they were to play each other in the playoffs, though, I think that's a different ballgame.
11:58If they play each other, I like Indiana because I think Cignetti's an awesome coach, and I don't think much
12:03of Miami's coach.
12:04But because of the ease of getting to where they have to be, I think it's going to be Miami.
12:08Cignetti greater than Cristobal, but Miami looks like a wagon.
12:11You mentioned the easier schedule, and Darian Mensah to Malachi Tony is a connection that might be unstoppable.
12:1812 catches on 13 targets for 234 yards, and Mensah went 27 of 30 through the air against a better
12:26opponent than Indiana played.
12:27Early read on this one, Miami.
12:29Yes, Cignetti over Cristobal all day, but I've got a fever, and the only fever, and the only cure for
12:35this fever is Mally Mensah.
12:36That combo is elite, Doug.
12:38Ridiculous.
12:39If I had to pick between the two schools, I'm riding that combo to the national title game.
12:42And there it is.
12:43That concludes the Transfer Portal Live Animal Mascot to NIL College Football Blitz Thingy.
12:49Carson Anderson, 97-1.
