Brent Key got brutally honest about what he saw from his team against Colorado ahead of their matchup against Tennessee.
Transcript
00:00It's called the Push for Orange on Twitter, and it's University of Tennessee.
00:04They are coming to Atlanta trying to take over Bobby Dodd.
00:07How dare you?
00:08That line is now 12-and-a-half stake.
00:11Tennessee favored by 12-and-a-half and opened up at 13-and-a-half, I do believe.
00:15Yesterday was Brent Key's weekly press conference, you guys.
00:19When I tell you, the look on his face, first of all, he was setting the tone that,
00:24okay, we're going to back up.
00:25I usually don't do this.
00:26We're going to talk about what happened against Colorado.
00:29Yeah, because every coach, once you get to Tuesday or Wednesday,
00:33is the famous classic curmudgeon Bill Belichick saying we're moving on to Cincinnati,
00:41moving on to Cincinnati.
00:42But that's more or less the mantra for all these coaches.
00:46We have got to start talking about Tennessee, preparing for Tennessee,
00:49and leaving that game behind us.
00:51Brent Key went the other way.
00:53I'm going to send a message to my alumni, to my fan base, to my players who are going
00:59to get wind of it, to the players' parents, to all those agents who I'm paying those kids.
01:03He wanted to send a message because he knew he had the biggest audience, right?
01:07This was going to be his biggest audience, was in front of the media,
01:11and also kind of an off day in the middle of the week.
01:13He knew if I want a message to be sent, that Tuesday was the day.
01:18And right now, I look at the film, we look as if we were a poorly prepared,
01:21poorly coached, poor discipline, soft football team.
01:25And that was extremely black and white.
01:28And that's the way I have to be with this thing.
01:30He went on to describe the penalties, the things that happened prior to a snap.
01:35He blamed it all on the coaches and preparing and went on and on and on.
01:40Stake, here's a little more.
01:41That was not Georgia Tech football.
01:43That was not the team that I've talked about for the last eight months.
01:45I think one of the first questions I got asked on Saturday was that.
01:51And, look, if you could anticipate the future, you have a crystal ball.
01:56But, look, I've been extremely high on this football team.
02:00I still am high on this football team, right?
02:03I am not high on the performance that occurred.
02:06We had our fans come out, our students come out,
02:09who were outstanding and stayed the whole game, the whole game.
02:14God bless you.
02:14And the more times that I watched the game and watched the game before we were able to,
02:19you know, quote, unquote, put it to bed, man, I'm sitting there going,
02:23man, what a bunch of troopers.
02:24Those fans staying out there with that garbage we put on the field.
02:27Unreal.
02:28I'm just going to probably be a little harsh for Tech fans.
02:32But, you know, I have great respect for Brent Key.
02:36We had great interviews with him.
02:38But when he keeps talking about that's not Georgia Tech football, I don't exactly know what great tradition of Brent
02:45Key football he's talking about.
02:47They're one in five in their last six.
02:50They had Haynes King, who was player of the year in the ACC.
02:53That's one of the greatest players that's ever been on the flats.
02:55Other than that, they're a middle-of-the-road ACC team that has been on a tailspin, usually late in
03:02the year when Haynes King gets injured.
03:04I know you played Georgia tough a few years ago in that eight-overtime game.
03:08I know that you got ranked as high as you've ever been.
03:11They're one in five in their last six.
03:13They're going to be one in six in their last seven.
03:16They're not beating Tennessee and Josh Heupel.
03:18So, we can talk all we want about the new, you know, Georgia Tech standard.
03:24I'm looking at a standard that is a little overhyped down there because I don't see this not being a
03:31season that they are going to struggle.
03:33And the Colorado loss is a flashing light of trouble.
03:39That is trouble.
03:40They continued, they asked him if they thought the team was overlooking Colorado, looking on to Tennessee.
03:46He absolutely, absolutely not.
03:48And then he started bringing up offensive line and in the trenches.
03:51And, you know, that's his bread and butter.
03:52Brent Key is the offensive line.
03:54Of course.
03:55And so, he brought up 51 yards rushing.
03:5851 yards.
03:59I mean, he was really something.
04:00They even tried to circle back about Josh Heupel in his presser yesterday.
04:04He talked about how tough Georgia Tech.
04:05Well, must not have watched on Saturday.
04:08Yeah, listen.
04:08I mean, he was thirsty.
04:10Excuse me.
04:11Listen, I'm not, I don't know what works and what doesn't with 18 to 22-year-old kids.
04:17And, you know, you definitely endeared yourself to your fan base by taking full responsibility.
04:22There was something incredibly refreshing about watching a coach after watching Raheem Morris and Arthur Smith and other coaches over
04:28the years that refused to say we play, you know, NFL is different, right?
04:32Because they're professionals.
04:33But in general, they just want to put it to bed and they don't want to call out their team
04:37publicly.
04:37But he's really calling out the coaches.
04:39And George Godsey, who comes over with an NFL mindset, loves to run double tight ends and wants to pound
04:45the football.
04:45How'd that work out for you?
04:47I thought Mendoza looked pretty good, actually, slinging it around.
04:49He didn't give enough opportunities.
04:51Yeah.
04:51And he was addressed about how Mendoza was snapping the ball with 13 seconds in that time management.
04:56He did say, you know what?
04:58We were trying to take advantage.
04:59They had 10 men on the field.
05:01You know, he wasn't making excuses.
05:03He took it.
05:04He really took it.
05:05I'm not kidding.
05:06Well, I think that this is a bad matchup.
05:10Josh Heupel coming in with Tennessee.
05:12A bad matchup.
05:13There's a reason they're a 13-and-a-half favorite on your home field.
05:18That's a 17-point difference Vegas has between the two rosters.
05:22That's a 17-point.
05:24Remember, you get three points for being at home.
05:26You're still getting 13-and-a-half.
05:27It would be an unbelievable, incredible win.
05:30And I hope I am dead wrong.
05:32I hope that Tech has a moment on Saturday night.
05:36But I don't see that coming.
05:37You're still getting 13-and-a-half.
