00:00The Costa Lock Jinx is dead.
00:03I was the only member of this show who believed in Michigan.
00:06I still don't know if I believe in Bryce.
00:09Whole shoelace game plan might have got it done against Oklahoma.
00:11But their defense won them that game.
00:14And I called this one and the Costa Lock, the Jinx is off.
00:18I think this is an overreaction.
00:20I'm not going to go that far.
00:22Hey, tip of the cap to you.
00:23Don't break your arm, patting yourself on the back.
00:25Also the only member of the show that took the Saints in the points.
00:29But you didn't Costa Lock it.
00:30No.
00:32One hit on the Costa Lock does not reverse the Jinx.
00:35How many do I got to get?
00:39It depends.
00:40Now, this was a good one.
00:41Because I don't think anybody else other than you and Rick Neuheisel
00:45were picking Michigan to win this game.
00:47Yeah, two people in the office owe me lunch.
00:49They were so confident they came up to me on Friday and bet me lunch on it.
00:52It's great.
00:53Now, Valeni did pick Michigan against the spread.
00:55And it did raise an eyebrow.
00:56And I respect both you guys and your football opinions.
00:59I think you're very wise men.
01:00And you guys are the betters at the station.
01:02So you almost changed my pick.
01:05But I was just like, Michigan looks so bad, I couldn't do it.
01:08We need more data on this Costa Lock thing, though.
01:11This is week one of the NFL.
01:13This is overreactions.
01:14Maybe you've turned the corner finally.
01:16But, John, I've got to let you know about this.
01:18Quote, handsome and brilliant devil that guy.
01:21Anyway, this is what this, I don't know what you want to call him, cocky SOB, posted on
01:28Twitter yesterday afternoon.
01:29Oh, and that was a comment?
01:30That's what, no.
01:31He made, he posted that about himself.
01:33Oh.
01:34He was like talking in third person, basically.
01:36The tweet, the tweeting question.
01:38Whoa, whoa, whoa.
01:39Heather, please turn your mic on.
01:40Be a part of this.
01:41What?
01:41Handsome and brilliant devil, that guy.
01:44Jim Costa posted that on Twitter yesterday, referring to his Michigan and Saints picks.
01:48I said only one member of the morning show picked both the Saints and the Lions.
01:51Going on there and just bragging about himself.
01:53The Saints and Michigan.
01:55Said that guy must be a handsome, brilliant devil.
01:57Yep.
01:59I couldn't wait to share that with you.
02:01I mean, the picks might have been right, but let's hold off on the adjectives about yourself.
02:08You're the slob.
02:09You're the gross one.
02:14I'm very confident.
02:17Dante Moore made a mistake going back to Oregon.
02:20They could miss the playoffs.
02:21D-line doesn't look as advertised.
02:23They lost to Oklahoma State, for crying out loud.
02:25And he doesn't look like the number one pick, not in a class that has C.J. Carr and Arch
02:29Manning.
02:30He lost millions, and he might not make the playoff.
02:32Overreaction at this point.
02:34They may miss the playoffs.
02:35There's no question.
02:36He may not be the number one overall pick, but I wouldn't sit there and say Arch Manning looked all
02:40that much better.
02:41Yes, they won, and he played better in the fourth quarter.
02:45And you look at all the other picks.
02:47I'm not going to sit there.
02:48We won't know if this is an overreaction or not until we get a chance to see him as an
02:53NFL quarterback.
02:54I still admire the fact that he said there's still a lot I have to work on.
02:57You lose that game, and some of it's on the quarterback.
03:00And you mentioned the defensive line is not as advertised.
03:03Neither is the offensive line.
03:04They can't run the ball.
03:06I am unbelievably surprised that they are playing the way that they are.
03:11And so it's not all on Dante Moore.
03:13He's got to show certain things.
03:15And it was nearly 400 passing yards in week one against Boise State.
03:20Now we've got to find out what type of defense they are throughout the course of the season.
03:24But I'm not going to sit there and say, no, that he made a mistake of coming back.
03:28Keep in mind, the only reason they were even close is because their defense scored a touchdown
03:32and then spotted them field position inside the five.
03:34Like Dante Moore did not keep up with Drew Mestemaker.
03:37Okay, I really felt long and hard about this.
03:39I don't think this is an overreaction because I look at it like this.
03:42Last year, he was a guaranteed top two pick.
03:45That has been jeopardized.
03:47He could go one.
03:48He could go two.
03:50But he's let three enter the equation because of CJ Carr.
03:54Right.
03:54He is still a top ten pick in the NFL.
03:58He's going to make a lot of money.
04:00But if he is better prepared for that next level, then he would have been coming out last year.
04:05I mean, would JJ have had an advantage of coming back for another year?
04:11He might not have been picked ten.
04:14But if he was picked 20 and then all of a sudden was a little bit more prepared for being
04:20an NFL quarterback,
04:21I don't know that we'd be talking about him as a third-string quarterback at this time.
04:25Do you believe Ryan Day screwed up royally?
04:29He should have let Texas score with about a minute left.
04:33Got an unguardable receiver?
04:35Try to get your kicker a shot at redemption.
04:36What was Ryan Day thinking?
04:38Well, he's thinking to keep him out of the end zone and win that way.
04:41Was he watching his defense huff and puff as he got marched up and down the field?
04:45Texas scored three different times in a row.
04:48And their last one was a touchdown with, what, 25 seconds left?
04:52It's too late.
04:52And if they had allowed them to score after that 19-yard pass got them down to, what, the 20
05:00-yard line?
05:01Down to the one-yard line?
05:02You call a timeout there.
05:03Then you let them score.
05:03You get a minute and 20.
05:05You control the clock.
05:06You can work middle of the field.
05:07You can work sideline.
05:08You can get Jeremiah Smith involved.
05:09Or you can just keep him out of the end zone and win the game.
05:12Not with the momentum.
05:13I was watching it, and it was a snowball.
05:15And I think this is not an overreaction.
05:18They should have let them score.
05:19And I think the thing was they only needed a field goal to win the game here.
05:23Yep.
05:23And their kicker had made three or four kicks.
05:25But I think that 45-yard miss from Connor Hawkins, the guy they got in the transfer portal, I looked
05:31up.
05:32I tried to confirm it.
05:33I couldn't.
05:33But a lot of speculation he's making $136,000 as a kicker from NIL, which is unbelievable.
05:39Yeah.
05:39You know, if you're going to pay the guy that kind of money, you've got to kind of trust that
05:43you're going to get the ball there, go back down and kick it.
05:45But that 45-yard miss is what I thought cost them the game.
05:52The Green Bay Packers will finish last in the NFC North.
05:56They can't run it.
05:57They can't protect.
05:58Flores blitzed 78% of the time.
06:01Just said, you can't handle this.
06:03Packers gave up 29 unanswered points.
06:05They will finish dead last.
06:06If week one is not a liar, I think this is not an overreaction.
06:12Now, might need some more data because they didn't have a running game because they didn't have a running back.
06:19They didn't have a pass rush because they didn't have a pass rusher.
06:22They're going to get those guys back.
06:24How long?
06:25I mean, we know that the running back is going to be out six weeks.
06:27When does Micah Parsons come back?
06:29That is a difference maker and changes this equation.
06:34Now, how big of a hole do they dig themselves until they get that opportunity to have those guys back?
06:39Yeah, I think it's overreaction for now.
06:40Now, Minnesota's QB situation is definitely up in the air.
06:44We don't know what Kyler Murray is going to be.
06:46Could they have a controversy with Wentz and their injuries away from J.J. McCarthy starting?
06:51There's just way too much season left.
06:53Plus, Matt LaFleur is 76-40-1 as a regular season head coach.
06:58That's the proper thickness and length.
07:01Jameer Gibbs isn't going to make it the whole season.
07:0421-0 would have been a great chance to put him on ice.
07:06Instead, you've got to run him into overtime.
07:0934 touches.
07:10He's on pace for over 500.
07:11It would be the most in NFL history.
07:14Then you'd want to run him in the postseason, too.
07:17He's not going to make it.
07:20I think it's an overreaction right now.
07:22It's one game.
07:23It's an overtime.
07:24I don't think every game is going to go to overtime, as you pointed out earlier.
07:26Even if I take OT out, he's on pace for the second most touches all time.
07:29And no other lion ran it more than twice.
07:31Right.
07:34I don't think that's a concern this year.
07:36The question is next year.
07:38If we look at Christian McCaffrey, he had 500 touches and then a bummer of a season.
07:43500 touches and then a bummer of a season.
07:45It's kind of every other thing.
07:47I'm not concerned about this year.
07:49Yeah, I think overreaction for now because I think the game and the recipe that game was
07:54is it maximized all the touches that he just won't see in other games.
07:59The Lions will have big plays throughout the season where they'll score faster on drives.
08:04I do think the GM needs to address this situation that if Vocky can't take more of the load,
08:09you need to go get somebody that can.
08:11So all these things will happen and they'll start to minimize Gibbs touches.
08:14It's also if J-Mo catches the ball, it changes the equation of how many times you're going
08:20to have to have Jameer Gibbs touch the ball.
08:22I would just say the script was you're up 21-0.
08:24How many times are they going to have a three touchdown lead in the second half and be
08:26able to rest him yet they didn't?
08:27Well, if that continues and they can't hold on the leads and this is what this team's
08:32becomes, then Gibbs is going to get more workload because you need your best players out there.
08:36Yep.
08:36They tried.
08:38The Bears are going to break the NFL scoring record.
08:4059 points in week one.
08:42The record's 6-0-6 for the season.
08:44They took a big chunk out of that already.
08:48Slow your roll.
08:49Overreaction.
08:51Are they going to have to outscore teams?
08:53Clearly.
08:54They allowed 37 points, but they're not going to play defenses like Carolina has right now.
09:00Now, we'll see Carolina face some other, you know, what we think are going to be high-powered
09:04offenses.
09:05Well, they'll play the Lions.
09:06Is this going to be a high-powered offense?
09:08I think we all believe it will be.
09:09I think it's an overreaction at this point.
09:12Yeah, overreaction.
09:14Broncos had 6-0-6.
09:15That's the record.
09:16The Bears have 547 to go, which they still have to score 34-plus a game to get there.
09:21That's expecting a lot.
09:22It was Carolina.
09:24I mean, name me a very good Carolina defensive player.
09:27Derek Brown on the defensive line.
09:30Beyond that.
09:31That's it.
09:31That's all I got.
09:32Your defensive tackle.
09:33Yeah.
09:34You want that to be an edge, at least?
09:36You would like to.
09:37Kudos to Ben Johnson, though, and even Caleb Williams, man.
09:42Some of those throws.
09:44He's growing and definitely was wrong about him.
09:47Says Mew.
09:49The Dallas Cowboys.
09:50How about them Cowboys?
09:52They're going to miss the playoffs again.
09:53So much for that improved defense.
09:55They're getting run on.
09:56They're blowing coverages in the red zone.
09:58And Dak didn't even throw for 200 yards.
10:01Overreaction at this point.
10:02I'm not willing to say that our picks of them winning the division are wrong yet.
10:08They may not win the division, but I don't think they finish last.
10:10I still think they make the playoffs.
10:12And there are some tweaks that need to be made in the secondary for the Cowboys.
10:16I wasn't even that concerned about what they did in the red zone.
10:19Yes, those are some blown coverages, but they blew coverages everywhere.
10:22Well, before that.
10:25Overreaction.
10:25They didn't look great.
10:26And I think this was more about the Giants.
10:28First off, the environment there last night in the pregame with the 9-11 stuff.
10:32You know, they kind of walked into a little bit of a hornet's nest.
10:35I think they had to allow time for the Cowboys' defense to gel.
10:39But to me, maybe one of the biggest stories of the first week, this is John Harbaugh.
10:45Okay?
10:46John Harbaugh is a top-five coach in this league.
10:49And he kind of got hung out to dry.
10:51And I think it was time for Baltimore to move on with Lamar.
10:54And sometimes you just need a clean break.
10:57But both can be good.
10:58And I think that team last night looked so fundamentally prepared.
11:03I'm telling you what, right now, I think the New York Giants are going to be a problem in the
11:07NFC.
11:08Not saying playoffs, but you better be ready to play because Harbaugh is going to have them ready.
11:14One last check-in.
11:16Red Wings still don't have a general manager.
11:18They will never hire one.
11:20This is the week.
11:20I've been holding out for this.
11:23We got to Thursday.
11:25No captain, no GM.
11:27I've been trying to calm you that as long as it happens before September 17th, we're good.
11:31Those are the overreactions.
11:33Do the Lions have a GM?
11:35It's 97-1.
