00:00Our weekly check-in with the Lions head coach, Dan Campbell.
00:03Dan, good morning.
00:04Morning.
00:05With the deeper dive, a chance to dig into some of the issues,
00:10what did you find with your deeper dive?
00:15Yeah, a lot like what I kind of talked about yesterday
00:20when we were kind of recapping everything.
00:23Just if you look over the last two weeks, really,
00:26we've got to be much better on third and fourth down conversions on offense
00:30and defense, and we need more explosives on offense,
00:35and we've got to reduce them on defense.
00:37A lot of that is just the way we're playing.
00:40I mean, and what I mean by that is it's a ripple effect.
00:45If one guy is off or not doing his job, it affects the rest of the guys.
00:49And so we've just got to clean it up, you know, and get our trust back a little bit,
00:56clean up some of these penalties, too.
00:58You know, we've had too many penalties, which some of those are the cost of doing business,
01:02but to me there's been too many that, you know, they shouldn't happen.
01:06They're discipline penalties or fundamentals, just locking in and playing with urgency.
01:12So it's all correctable, though.
01:14That's the good news.
01:15And so it was good to get the guys in here and really just, man, go over it in detail
01:21and clean up the last two weeks.
01:24So you mentioned, let's talk about the explosives on the offensive side of the ball.
01:27I know that there were some there.
01:29There were some drops in week one, but is that more execution,
01:33and you need to see more explosive plays just executed by your team,
01:37or is it you want to see your offense call more explosive plays,
01:44take more shots down the field?
01:46No, I think some of it is, you know, of course there's some missed execution,
01:50but those pop in there or, you know, protection breaks down one area or another
01:57that would have been, or we have a drop or whatever.
02:02You know, so there is some of those, but I think so much of it is getting the run game
02:07going.
02:08Like that was going to be a, we actually had more explosives the other day offensively,
02:13you know, which was good.
02:14I mean, we got some explosives, but, you know, we had to, we, our guys had to make some things
02:20happen
02:21because we couldn't get the run game going.
02:22And to me, that's where it all starts.
02:24You want, you want the explosives and you want a lot of them.
02:27You got to get, you got to start them in the run game.
02:30And then that, that gets into your play action pass.
02:32That's where you can really find some voids in the defense.
02:37Otherwise, you know, it's got to come organically.
02:40Your guys got to make plays, which we have guys that can get it in their hands.
02:43And then they got to make some people miss.
02:45And we've done those too.
02:47But we just got to, we're a little out of sorts, you know, right now.
02:52And that's where, where I feel like we're giving up too many on defense and we're not
02:55getting enough on offense, but we're close.
02:58Like I say, it's a lot closer than it appears to be.
03:01On defense, everybody wants to know what's the fix.
03:04And I don't know that there's a great answer for it, but in the secondary, is, is it more
03:09of a personnel issue where you're, they're guys are being asked to do something that they
03:13can't necessarily accomplish?
03:15Or is it the other one where it's an execution where guys can, they're just not executing
03:20at the level you need them to?
03:22Well, I think the other day, you know, we, we got in there and look, we, we, we had a
03:29couple of guys play that hadn't got a ton of reps because of injury or whatever the
03:34case be, maybe.
03:36And we went into a short week where we get no full speed reps.
03:39We're in three days of walk through, jog through, um, that, and that doesn't make
03:44it better.
03:45All right.
03:46And, uh, that doesn't make it any easier.
03:48And you also know you're going to go in against Josh Allen.
03:52You can't be sitting ducks.
03:54Um, you know, you, so you don't want to do too much.
03:57It's a short week, but you also don't want to just totally tell him what you're doing.
04:02Um, and, and so there's always going to be that balance, but I think some of it, you
04:07know, we had a couple of guys, like I said, they didn't get full speed reps and they hadn't
04:10practiced a lot in a while because of injury.
04:12And then Maddox goes down.
04:14That didn't, that hurt, you know, then we get thrust into putting some people where they,
04:18they haven't been, um, and that doesn't help.
04:21And then that creates, you know, man, I, I, I do the wrong thing.
04:25Well, then I'm going to cover for you.
04:27Well, I'm wrong now.
04:28It just, it's a ripple effect.
04:29And so we just got to got back to do your job, man.
04:34Be where you're supposed to be when you're supposed to be there and do it fast, do it with urgency
04:37and trust.
04:38You got to trust the front.
04:40The front's got to trust the coverage and just every man doing their job.
04:43Yeah.
04:44Cause it looked sloppy and disjointed on defense.
04:47What, what identity do you ultimately want?
04:48What do you want to hang your hat on with, with the defense that you guys play?
04:53Takeaways.
04:55And how do you emphasize that now with the extra time for the jets?
05:00We get back to full speed work and everybody does their job and I want to stop the run.
05:06Okay.
05:07Uh, Blake Miller, uh, obviously missed this, uh, the game against Buffalo.
05:11If the game had been on Sunday, would he have a better chance to play?
05:15And do you expect him back this week?
05:18Yeah, I think there was a good chance that it'd been Sunday to play.
05:21I think I, I, I feel pretty good that he's trending the right way to be in there, but won't
05:26know until we get him out there on the field.
05:28Left guard update on a mahogany status and what the plan is there.
05:33The plan is to practice him tomorrow.
05:35So we'll, we'll see where he and Miller are both, uh, you gave updates on the safeties
05:40yesterday, branch a little closer than Kirby.
05:43I feel like as a fan, people are past worried with Kirby.
05:46What would you tell a fan that doesn't think he's ever going to play again?
05:50Well, I mean, I, I wish I could make you feel good.
05:54I can't make you feel good.
05:56It's, you know, it's going to come as it comes and he's not ready.
06:01And we're trying to get in there as fast as we can.
06:04And we're trying to be as smart about it as we can.
06:06And, and if he's ready, when he's ready, of course, we want to play him and get him on
06:11the field.
06:12What would have to change?
06:13Because we're coming up on a year since that chiefs game.
06:16If he's unable to practice, what would, what would change for him to get out there?
06:21I guess nothing.
06:24Okay.
06:25Uh, looking at the rushing attack, obviously when you're playing Josh Allen, it's, you
06:30know, it's, it's, it's, it's an alien and he's going to pick up some yards on the ground.
06:34James Cook had over 135 yards.
06:36What was, what was not working in the run game that you are, you're confident will work
06:43moving forward?
06:45Uh, there was, uh, close to a hundred yards, uh, that, that we, we had a couple of guys
06:54misfit on the perimeter.
06:57Um, and everybody else is doing their job.
07:00So we, there again, man, just getting some full speed work and practice and getting back
07:06to the basics of it.
07:07Everybody do your job.
07:08And, and I think that'll help.
07:10And then some of these where we are gapped out, we, we got to hit these blocks better
07:13than we are.
07:15Um, we didn't play, we didn't play downhill enough.
07:18And then when we did move, we're moving to lateral.
07:20So once we move, we got to get back to vertical on some of this.
07:24We're just getting sprayed out of there.
07:26Talking to Alliance head coach, Dan Campbell, Jack Campbell put a lot on himself and he's
07:30a good player.
07:31And I know you've said a lot of good things about him.
07:33Um, where is he at and how do you get the best version of Jack Campbell back?
07:37Yeah.
07:37Jack's a good player, man.
07:39And, uh, you know, yeah, some things came up the other day, you know, he, he, there's
07:46some things he can clean up just like the rest of them.
07:49I mean, everybody on, on defense, everybody on offense, all us as coaches, we all had,
07:54we had a hand in that and everybody at any given time, you know, had a couple of bad
07:59things happen.
08:00So you just get back to what we do, man.
08:02That's the good news is we get to get back to full speed work here, full live reps, get
08:07a look at it, uh, process it, make the mistake, correct it.
08:11And now we're ready for the game.
08:13And then you go in and try to play your best football.
08:17The Jets are coming to town.
08:19Old friend, Aaron Glenn coming to town.
08:21Uh, we talked about this last year with Ben Johnson.
08:23You obviously face him twice a year being in division, but is there an advantage, disadvantage?
08:28How much do you have to change things up?
08:31Because he is a little bit familiar with how you guys operate offensively.
08:36Yeah.
08:36I mean, he's, he's very familiar, uh, with our personnel and with, you know, what kind of
08:42what we do, what way we think here a little bit.
08:44Um, but I do think, you know, we're familiar with him too, to an extent now, you know, he's
08:51got new personnel, a lot of new personnel this year.
08:54They changed their scheme.
08:55So literally we're going off of what he's got right now, you know, and, um, and that
09:02personnel after two weeks and a couple of preseason or a preseason quarter, quarter, quarter and
09:07a half.
09:08Um, and so some of it is it's him, but it's also different.
09:12And, and then Brian Duker is, you know, he was here, but he was their D coordinator.
09:16He's, he's been at Seattle, um, or excuse me, Baltimore, which there's a Seattle influence
09:22Baltimore, and then obviously stuff AG wants to run.
09:26So there's, it's AG stuff, but there's also a mesh and a mix of other things.
09:30So, um, so yeah, there'll be things that we, we, we got to be ready for, but listen, that's
09:36why we went through camp and, uh, we got all the looks we got from our own defense.
09:42And, uh, and so really, I, I don't think they're, you're, you're getting anything one way or
09:47another.
09:47Um, and you, you prepare your guys the best you can, just like they're going to, and, and,
09:53uh, let's see who plays the best football.
09:55Let's talk about your defensive coordinator.
09:56You've stood by, you believe in Kelvin Shepard.
09:59What gives you the confidence that he can coordinate this group and get everybody in, in the position
10:03to be in, to be successful?
10:06So I think he's a very sharp coach.
10:08I think he's an excellent communicator.
10:10I think he's a great motivator.
10:12Um, I think he sees the game very well.
10:16Um, and listen, things didn't work out, man.
10:20We had a rough game.
10:21Um, and, but I, but I believe in him.
10:25I do.
10:26And I believe in the staff too.
10:27So we'll get the best out of this unit and, uh, we'll, we're going to get better here and
10:32not overreact.
10:34Last one for me, Dan, uh, the overtime rule, the rebuttal rule.
10:38I don't know if you guys have had the chance, the saints won the toss.
10:43What's your philosophy?
10:44Because on Sunday you had, I believe it was the jets decided, Hey, we want the ball.
10:48The Colts said, we want the ball.
10:50What's your philosophy?
10:51If you guys find yourself in that position?
10:54Well, I mean, I don't know.
10:58I would, I would prefer to have the ball last, but look, you never know.
11:03Every game's a little bit different.
11:05And what are you facing?
11:06What's it like?
11:07Like, are you moving the ball and offense up and down the field?
11:10What's the weather?
11:11Um, but me personally, I'd probably like to have it last.
11:15Okay.
11:16Well, Dan, good luck against the jets.
11:17We'll check in next week.
11:19Appreciate your time.
11:20All right.
11:22It's 97 one.
