00:00All right, guys, we've got Lions Bills tonight right here on 97.1.
00:04Paint the path to a Lions victory in Buffalo's new Highmark Stadium.
00:09Run the ball, slow the game down, get explosive obviously out of Jameer Gibbs,
00:14but win time of possession.
00:16Now, that could be a tricky number because if you win time of possession,
00:19it doesn't necessarily mean that you've eliminated the explosives for Josh Allen and DJ Moore.
00:25They could score quickly, which then throws off the win the time of possession.
00:30But if you can't keep them out of rhythm, if you slow things down,
00:34you'll keep the crowd somewhat maintained.
00:38So I think that's what you got to do.
00:41Run the football, and then on defense, you got to limit those big plays.
00:45You have the whole defense dress up as Spider-Man.
00:49That'll mess with Josh Allen.
00:51I do think this comes down to the Lions defense.
00:53Everyone's going to fixate on three offensive linemen or two starting offensive linemen not playing.
00:59Their defense has to win them this game.
01:01Josh Allen lost six games a year ago.
01:03Five of the six, he committed two-plus turnovers.
01:06You need to win the turnover battle.
01:08At least plus one, might have to be plus two, because he's going to move the ball.
01:12You got to be opportunistic.
01:14Get a hand on it.
01:15Punch the ball out.
01:16Get some takeaways.
01:17All right, Kenneth Walker III, fresh off his Super Bowl MVP, tore up the Broncos on Monday night with 173
01:24yards and two total touchdowns.
01:26Is K-9 the greatest skilled position player ever out of Michigan State when it comes to NFL production?
01:33Yes.
01:34I'll be a prisoner of the moment.
01:35He's got a Super Bowl MVP.
01:36Let's look at the rest of the list.
01:37He's the list.
01:39What are those other guys on the list?
01:41Super Bowl MVPs from MSU.
01:43No, let's do a whole list.
01:44Ready?
01:44We'll spend the next four hours.
01:45All right.
01:46There's only 50 or 60 Super Bowl MVPs.
01:48Right.
01:49All right.
01:50We do have some Hall of Famers on the list.
01:53And so I'll start with Andre Rides.
01:55He's not a Hall of Famer, but five-time Pro Bowler.
01:58He has a Super Bowl with the Packers.
02:00Derek Mason, 15 seasons, over 12,000 yards.
02:03Some of it's just in terms of it's just not enough of a resume for Kenneth Walker.
02:09You also have Morton Anderson.
02:11Are we counting him as a skilled position player?
02:13Like 25 years, seven Pro Bowls, Hall of Fame?
02:18Well, this is your answer, and I don't know if you want to be on record as saying kickers
02:21are skilled positions.
02:23I'm not even to the guy that I'm going to talk about yet, and that's the defensive back
02:27Herb Adderley.
02:28Oh.
02:30Sorry, Adderley.
02:331960s all-decade team.
02:34Well, that wouldn't be a skilled position.
02:36Six NFL championships, three Super Bowl rings, five-time Pro Bowler, and a four-time first-team
02:43All-Pro.
02:43I should have talked this out.
02:44I don't consider that a skilled position.
02:46This was a quarterback, receiver, tight end, and running back.
02:49Because we want to get into the argument about playing the game with skill.
02:52I think it does take more skill to play offensive line than it does to go catch a ball.
02:56Listen, from a...
02:57And then we're going to throw in there Joe DeLama Lear, and we're going to have Flo Zell
03:03the hotel.
03:06He destroyed the question.
03:07I mean, seriously.
03:10Okay.
03:10Let's move on.
03:11So, I think he's probably, if we're talking offensive players...
03:15What's Plaxico?
03:16...third on the list.
03:17Yeah.
03:17No.
03:18I put Plaxico and Mason and then rising in the debate.
03:22Yeah.
03:22The NFL had the highest scoring week one in Super Bowl era.
03:25Why do you think the scoring's up so much?
03:28It's officiating.
03:30You can't hit quarterbacks.
03:31Even if you do, you can't land on quarterbacks.
03:33And even if you don't land on quarterbacks, you're going to get penalized.
03:36It's just...
03:37That's part of it.
03:38It's wide receiver rules.
03:39It's tackling rules.
03:40It is everything that is limiting defenses.
03:42That is the benefit of offenses.
03:45We saw it in week one.
03:46We're going to continue to see it throughout the NFL season.
03:49You're asking specifically why week one was record-setting?
03:53Well, one team almost scored 60 points.
03:55The answer is Caleb Williams and Ben Johnson.
03:58You and Ben Johnson, man.
04:00All right.
04:00We've had some good defenses like the Broncos in Texas get rocked in week one.
04:04Then you had the Chargers ruining survivor pools with their loss to the Cardinals.
04:08Which of these three teams is most likely to miss the playoffs?
04:12I want to direct your attention to the Chargers' next eight games.
04:15They'll play the Raiders, but then buckle up.
04:18At Buffalo.
04:19At Seattle.
04:20Denver.
04:21At Kansas City.
04:22At the Rams.
04:23Houston.
04:24And at Baltimore.
04:25The Chargers, if I had to pick one from the group to fall out, it would be them.
04:29Ditto.
04:30I mean, I've got all that listed as well.
04:32But I also trust the defense of the Broncos and the Texans more than I trust anything that the Chargers
04:37are doing.
04:38Drew Brees said he considered coming out of retirement.
04:41To play for the Broncos in the AFC Championship game last year after Bo Nix's injury.
04:46Do you think he would have played better than Jarrett Stidham?
04:49No.
04:50He hasn't played since 2020.
04:52And even at that, I mean, okay, so there was only 12 games, I think, in 2020.
04:54He played all of those games.
04:56Before that, he still couldn't play a full season.
04:58I don't think he would have got through the game.
04:59And I'll sit there and say this.
05:01I think Jarrett Stidham actually played better than Drake May in that game.
05:04So maybe if Tom had come back to play for New England and Drew had come back to play for
05:10Denver, we might have had a decent game.
05:12It was just a terrible quarterback game.
05:15Drake May was 10 of 2021.
05:17And Jarrett Stidham was 17 of 31.
05:19The issue was the rushing attack for Denver.
05:22They couldn't rush the football.
05:24Yeah.
05:24Look, a sloppy, snowy game.
05:26Both teams missed two field goals.
05:28If old man Rivers was any indication, no, I don't think Drew Brees was coming back and fixing it.
05:33All right.
05:33I'm going to steal something from Greg here from on campus on Tuesday.
05:36He allowed you guys to rescind your national title pick.
05:39I'm going to allow you guys to rescind your NFC championship game representative in the Super Bowl pick.
05:46So both of you had the Rams representing the NFC in the Super Bowl.
05:49Do either of you want to take that back after their loss and the Miles Garrett injury?
05:54I'd just like to say this.
05:55You got a chance to answer that first.
05:58And you came up with a soft answer.
06:00You have a chance to show a backbone.
06:03What are you going to do here?
06:05I don't need to put any extra emphasis on this.
06:07I can speak for myself.
06:09No.
06:10You already did.
06:11No.
06:11Who would back out of a preseason pick after only one week?
06:15Maybe two weeks, but certainly not after only one week.
06:20And by the way, it's a game in Australia.
06:21I just think you're throwing that out.
06:23I'm not willing to back out of the Rams.
06:25I think if they make the playoffs and they should, that's a team that can flip the switch and go
06:28on a run.
06:29I agree.
06:30No, I'm not going to back out of this because it Miles Garrett, I would assume there's no timetable, but
06:36I think he'll be back.
06:37We're going to see what Aaron Donald is looks like when he comes back and the two of them together
06:42defensively.
06:43There's still a threat.
06:45Just those two guys to be Super Bowl champs.
06:48And then you look at offensively.
06:49I don't think Matthew Stafford just all of a sudden woke up and can't play anymore.
06:53I was shocked at the way that the offense played.
06:57And I do think it there's I think there's a lot of it about what they did and how they
07:03traveled.
07:04You're telling me 12 staffers, little people that don't play the game that over two years, they're going to say,
07:11OK, well, let's let's send them to Australia and see how their bodies react.
07:15All right.
07:16So going into the season, I believe Chris Shula, the defensive coordinator at the Rams, would have been the number
07:23one on the list of new guys to get a first time head coaching job.
07:27I think his reputation is on the line here big time right now, because, look, they don't have Garrett and
07:32they don't have Donald.
07:34Maybe they don't have him together, which was the recipe for this team being dominant, maybe for weeks.
07:41And you don't have Jared Versch from last year.
07:43So now your defense is actually worse than last year.
07:47And if they struggle here early and build up losses, I agree with Jim.
07:51I think they might get this thing rolling in December.
07:53And if they don't get in, watch out.
07:56But definitely major, you know, flaws after just week one, you know, and potential concerns.
08:04I'm not going to hit the panic button at the Browns, Dolphins and Titans all looked awful in week one.
08:09Which of these teams ends up with the number one pick in the 2027 draft?
08:13Tennessee Titans.
08:14They can't defend.
08:15They can't run the ball.
08:17They can't throw the ball.
08:18They can't do anything.
08:21And Robert Sala, we saw him with the Jets.
08:23Is this him as a head coach?
08:26Like, I just, I don't understand it.
08:29We saw Arizona get a win with a new head coach.
08:31And what we believe is not a great roster.
08:34I just don't understand why there can't be any measure of improvement.
08:39In fact, I think they looked worse than they did last year.
08:42Wow.
08:44Yeah, I think Paul Sarah gets the number one pick.
08:46I think the Dolphins will be the worst team in football.
08:48I think the Tennessee Titans are the worst run organization in the NFL.
08:51I thought this last year.
08:52I know the Browns are easy because of the Sean Watson debacle.
08:56But take that out, you know, and the collective decisions that the Titans have made over years here.
09:03They got rid of Vrabel.
09:04Yeah.
09:05The first year he goes to the Super Bowl.
09:07Yeah.
09:08They're just a poorly run organization.
09:10There you go.
09:11Thursday touchdown, 97-1.
