00:09and it sure is a great time of year and fun to be doing this job

00:24and the Save College Sports Act,
00:27understanding that their real motivation,
00:30was to save the SEC and save ESPN's deal with the SEC,
00:38which since NIL has become a thing,
00:41it feels like it's leveled the playing field,
00:43and ESPN and the Southeastern Conference don't like it.

00:51What he did for Ole Miss against LSU was fantastic.
00:56You know, local kid from Grand Rapids, great story.
01:00I mean, who would have thought that a couple years ago,
01:02a few years ago, you got a kid playing football at Ferris State,
01:05sharing time, would end up being the starting quarterback at Ole Miss
01:12and commanding a multi-million dollar payment from the university
01:16to play out this year, and he's been fantastic.

01:22My Champ at a weekend is Brad Holmes.
01:27I'm a big Holmes supporter,
01:30and I think what he's trying to do is really, really interesting.
01:35But the depth pieces that he signed that I was going to buy into
01:41watching them help when injuries hit,
01:44guys like Larry Borum or Bartsch or Izzyon or Clark or whomever,
01:49felt like all kind of struggled against Buffalo,
01:53and maybe that's not a fair way to judge them
01:55against one of the best teams in the NFL,
01:57but it is what it is.
01:58It's champ and chump of the weekend,
02:01and I feel like that was not a good display of depth signings.
02:07Still a Brad Holmes fan, but that goes on his permanent record.
02:10Yeah, for me, it's one of those players.
02:12It's Larry Borum, pro football focus, take it for what it's worth,
02:16but they say he's credited with giving up 11 pressures
02:19in the game to Buffalo, including a couple of sacks.
02:22He had three penalties against him.
02:25I mean, to the point where during the game,
02:27I was clamoring for let's put Miles Frazier
02:31or somebody else in that right tackle
02:32because Larry Borum's just not getting it done.
02:34Fortunately, Blake Miller seems like he's going to be healthy enough
02:37to participate in practice this week,
02:39let alone, of course, playing the game Sunday against the Jets.
02:42They need him, but the thought that there was actually competition
02:45to start training camp between Borum and Blake Miller,
02:49it's kind of laughable now.

02:58from Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell.
03:01According to Nolan Bianchi, who covers the Lions for the Detroit News,
03:07safety Avanti Maddox needs surgery on his foot
03:09and will be out for the season.
03:13So, that's not good.
03:15No, already, and I suppose to a degree, we could see this coming.
03:23Jeremy Fowler reported a couple things.
03:25The Lions are working out a group of defensive backs Monday,
03:28per sources, veterans Jordan Fuller and Jalen Mills
03:32are among the participants.
03:33And then this morning, the Lions worked out,
03:35will work out veteran safety Mike Edwards today.
03:38So, here we go again with guys off the street,
03:40which happened, it seemed like, a lot last year.
03:43And the year before.
03:44Yep.
03:44And the year before.
03:45Yeah.
03:46I mean, this is life in the NFL.
03:48Injuries happen.
03:50Can dude off the street, who no team has claimed,
03:53come in and help you?
03:56They can, but it feels like these are emergency break glass kind of things.
04:01If they could have helped you, why didn't you sign them before?
04:05Yes, that's a question to ask.
04:08I also wonder if this means that because you're going to have newer players
04:14playing that position and guys that are new to a playbook and scheme and all that,
04:22will Calvin Shepard, the defensive coordinator of this team,
04:24is he going to simplify things in terms of how they call things from the back end?
04:32Because if it's already causing confusion and missed assignments and bad communication,
04:40and that's with guys that have been in training camp the whole time,
04:43and guys that have known they were going to be starters for a while,
04:45and now you've got to pivot again because Avante Maddox is out,
04:49I would think that that's probably a good place to start,
04:52is to try to simplify things.
04:55But I don't know.
04:57Your point's valid.
04:58You're bringing guys off the street that anybody else had a chance at,
05:01and you didn't sign them before, but now you're kind of forced in this situation.
05:05The only other way to change things up is to make trades,
05:08and at two weeks into the season,
05:10it's not likely to find trade partners two weeks into the season.

06:09And ever since then, there really hasn't been any splash moves or any,
06:14you know, good signings.

06:19Would you have signed Panay Sewell to an extension?
06:24I mean, the way things are going right now, we kind of have to, it seems like.

07:15it would cost them more than likely one of the aforementioned players.
07:20So, I hear you, but let me say this here.
07:24At the end of the day, Brad Holmes did have that level of success.
07:28But I guess my issue is, we were talking about Brad Holmes,
07:32but I feel like Dan Campbell is not really catching enough heat in its own right.
07:37Because at the end of the day, I feel like Brad Holmes has brought more to the table for the
07:42team
07:43than Dan Campbell actually has.
07:44So, now you're pivoting.
07:47You went from, okay, I think Brad Holmes should be potentially fired,
07:51and now Dan Campbell needs to be fired more so than Brad Holmes.
07:55I'm trying to shift the conversation here because, you know, a lot of people, including myself,
07:59a lot of people, including myself, does think that Brad Holmes, you know,
08:03should definitely be on the hot seat for this year.
08:06But, you know, I feel like more people are talking about Brad Holmes
08:09than actually Dan Campbell as well.

08:12At the end of the day, Dan Campbell was the same coach against the Niners
08:16that decided to go for it on fourth down over and over again
08:20and started taking field goals.
08:22So, and ever since what has he brought to the team?
08:26It was one time.

08:30And it was a play that was in the hands of a receiver who dropped the ball.

08:42Of the two players, two guys you mentioned, I don't think neither Dan Campbell
08:45or Brad Holmes is truly on the hot seat.
08:48I don't think any of them are in danger at this time of being fired.

09:33coaches and maybe a coordinator has maybe two buttons on the, on the seat warmer and
09:39Kelly Shepard.
09:39I certainly think there's more reason today than there was a month ago.
09:44Um, but some of the questions I had a month ago are creeping up today because of what I
09:51wanted them to address in the off season.
09:53Didn't really get addressed, which was going to the secondary specifically with the safety
09:57position.
09:57And now here it is.
09:59Avanti Maddox is out.
10:00I'm concerned about that.
10:02How do they pivot is, is the answer to staving off the finger on the button of the seat warmer
10:08to press it to level one.
10:09I don't, I'm with you.
10:10They're not there.
10:11The potential is there.
10:14If there are moves that are not made prior to say the trade deadline where they've got
10:19to, they've got to do something with the secondary before the trade deadline.

10:23The win over new Orleans looks better today than it did after week one lost to Buffalo
10:27looks bad.
10:28What are the lions?
10:29Are the lions in trouble here or the lions just not good enough to walk into Buffalo on the
10:36night?
10:37They opened up their new stadium and blew, blew the doors off Detroit for the most part,
10:42right out of the gate.
10:43And yeah, they're not there right now, but this is a long season, a long season where
10:50it still has real potential.
10:52Well, this would be a pretty damn good year.
10:54Yeah.
10:54But both Brad Holmes and Dan Campbell have some questions that they're going to have to answer.
10:58And it's about the resiliency of this team.
11:01How do you, you know, add to this team right now?
11:04If you're Brad Holmes, cause you've got to add to it.
11:06And if you're Dan Campbell, you've got real questions about how do you make your defense
11:09better?
11:10And there was some reporting yesterday about Joey Porter jr.
11:13And he would be a guy that would make the defense better.
11:15Uh, we'll get to that today at 12 20.
