00:04let's get after it it's the thursday touchdown
00:22okay so i never thought in a million years i'd begin the thursday touchdown with tom kennedy
00:26but there's a reason why the lions lost tom kennedy for the season
00:29due to a knee injury who is your number one candidate to replace kennedy in the return game
00:35so i would go with a multi-pronged approach in kick returns i would probably just go with like
00:42a tay martin um you know maybe throw one of those defensive backs back there and see you're typically
00:49starting at about the 25 anyway i don't know that you're going to gain that much from it we don't
00:55see as many kick returns as we historically have with the new way that the kickoff is done
00:59but in the terms of the punt return stick with me here jmo he did it in his final year
01:06at alabama
01:07you have an opportunity for some big plays and some big moments he averaged 35 yards per punt return
01:14in that in that final year at alabama i mean he's gonna drop the ball every other time i was
01:18just
01:18gonna say that i put that on a team with you for yes punts are catching the punt i understand
01:24that
01:24yeah just ask andrew marsh um but it is you i think the potential is there for some big plays
01:33is the trade-off worth it though because i've got an offense this is humming i don't want to lose
01:38the
01:38possession before it even starts i don't trust jmo to catch it i would go trustworthy jacob sailors
01:44he's done a good job on kick returns i'd have him back there returning punts okay yeah kick return i
01:49would definitely go with somebody that's you know safe hands and you know you're gonna get like you
01:54said the kick return is just not a big part of the game anymore punt returns are still very crucial
01:59i am intrigued by jmo but i i understand the whole catching the ball thing well the injury though
02:06too the injury factor and get somebody back there i i want somebody that's going to be somewhat of a
02:11threat though i don't want the line just to put somebody back there that fair catches all the time
02:14or is holding the ball like this you know coveting it you got to have a threat because it is
02:21part of
02:21the game sailors 12th right now in kick return yards it's more than good enough okay i would be fine
02:27with that all right the lions face the packers and then the vikings at home after their bye week
02:32don't the lions have to sweep both these games if they really want to win this division yes division
02:38games are critical these are home games if you want the games at the end of the season to matter
02:42you got to win these games but the issue that i have is do the lions have to they don't
02:51have to it's
02:52preferred and yes if but so i'll ask you this question do you think that minnesota green bay or
03:00chicago sweeps the division no john all right so to be in a great spot to do it if they
03:06will beat the
03:07right now it would be preferred if you're going to lose one now this would hurt more maybe emotionally
03:14you'll lose green bay you beat minnesota because you don't want to minnesota right now being five and
03:20you don't want to lose one to them correct but you do have more bites at the apple this early
03:25in
03:25the year and this is after i just said last week was a must win i was just about to
03:28bring up the
03:29hypocrisy what no no no no no not hypocrisy we're past that now okay this is why arizona wouldn't
03:36have been a must win in jim's world the problem is i think they're all must wins these nfc games
03:43but
03:43especially the divisional games i would lean more towards that but i it's just you back yourself in
03:49a corner when you say you have to because they could lose one of these games and still win the
03:54division could have lost arizona and still won the division the 49ers rams and seahawks are all
03:58allowing under three yards 300 yards per game which of these three nfc west teams will have the best
04:04defense at the end of the year so the seahawks have the best reputation to be that however i am
04:12still intrigued with what the rams look like if miles garrett is able to play this year and i think
04:19he it sounds like he will be i don't know when that is but you put him up there aaron
04:24donald has not
04:25been the aaron donald of of your um and so i don't know if he eventually gets there it's going
04:32to take
04:33some time um but i am intrigued with what this defense will be with the investments they've made at the
04:39corner position as well as added pressure up front i think it could be the rams out of those three
04:45they certainly have the upside but i think the move here is seattle there's the track record
04:52they've got a defensive head coach they're generating the most pressure right now it's not
04:56like it's smoke and mirrors like they're legitimately a strong group i would go with them i don't have
05:01to roll the dice with the other two getting healthy and playing to their potential every team in
05:05the nfc north and afc north are above 500 right now which is just crazy which division is better
05:12and which division has a better chance to get a team to the super bowl same answer for both nfc
05:19look the team that could best challenge for the super bowl on paper is the ravens but it's lamar in
05:24the playoffs the odds right now three of the top 10 super bowl teams are nfc north squads always goes
05:31to
05:31the odds i actually think the nfc north is the tougher division top to bottom the the floor is
05:39higher in the nfc north but then you think about what is the team the best of those eight teams
05:46i
05:47don't i i go with you in terms of lamar jackson in the postseason i don't think it's baltimore i
05:51actually think it's cincinnati i think they have the best chance to be the team if they could put it
05:56all together because defensively they're performing at a level that they haven't done in the last five
06:02years the chargers dolphins and titans are all oh and five which team will win a game first oh this
06:09is tough and i'm not going to go through all their schedules but i'm going to eliminate the chargers
06:12because we've talked about how tough their schedule is coming up dolphins titans i hate to think that
06:17your first win of those three teams is going to come from one of those but i'm going to go
06:22with
06:22dolphins and it's simply because i think you know i think they got a better chance of beating
06:27the jets actually this week than the other teams have in the next four or five weeks so yeah i
06:36really
06:36looked at that game dolphins at jets that's the end of the month it's the 25th and that same day
06:42because they're on a bye yes so not this week the next game that they play yes that same week
06:47the
06:48titans will host the cleveland browns sean watson could give you a couple gifts just to be different
06:54i'll say tennessee okay so if tennessee wins that game will be 10-7 because they can't score points
06:58all right we had our first tie of the nfl season between the commanders and giants what's the best
07:04way for the nfl to get rid of ties they're not going to play endless overtime i would love to
07:10get a
07:10true resolution i think you just make it a double loss if you don't win you lose
07:17that would be fun to watch at the end of the game it would be fun to watch and so
07:20um mine is
07:22i guess similar uh but i do have one extra off or overtime if neither team scores in the 10
07:31minutes
07:32both teams get a loss like we saw like no there's no field goals there's no touchdowns there's no
07:37nothing they did they they play the entirety of that first overtime neither team scores they both get
07:42else if both teams score because both teams get a chance so if it's a touchdown and touchdown or it's
07:47a field goal field goal and they get to the end and it's still tied then it's sudden death in
07:52the
07:52next overtime and there's no oh well we didn't get a chance to hold the ball you had a chance
07:56to win
07:57in the in in regulation and in overtime i am willing to go that far because it does it's so
08:02rare that it
08:02would happen uh with that the new the second overtime that becomes sudden death would there be a new
08:08coin toss yes okay good i then i i kind of like that i like both ideas to be honest
08:12good job
08:12cowboys defense has been nearly as bad as the lions defense this year on monday brian schottenheimer
08:18hired mike patton as a new senior defensive assistant should the guy lions look to do something similar
08:25uh yes i think they should more eyeballs more thoughts more ideas it calvin shepherd doesn't have
08:30to go with anything but to present him with more options i would say yep jim schwartz i know that's
08:36the
08:36name that everybody talks about there it gets weird because he is technically still under contract
08:40for the browns i don't want to give up any draft capital for a defensive analyst or assistant steve
08:47wilks is out there jack del rio is out there um i know everybody's going to roll their eyes when
08:51i say
08:52this but he has been a long time nfl defensive coordinator wick martindale is out there you also
08:58have wade phillips and he has is 79 he has coached as recently as 2024 in the ufl that is
09:08a wealth of
09:09knowledge and he doesn't even have to be here exactly i like that a lot and it just hey zoom
09:15him in and what's your thoughts yeah shep's green he's only a second year defensive coordinator they
09:21helped aaron glenn with dom capers and john fox in this defensive analyst role of course the answer
09:28is obvious bring someone in to help this is a underlying thing that if the cowboys have success
09:33defensively and clean it up and then the lions continue to look the way that they did this is
09:38going to be held against dan campbell yes you know this is something to keep an eye on a talking
09:42point
09:42that can be really used if the lions continue to struggle right oh and against brad holmes because
09:47they went out and got joey porter jr it's your thursday touchdown it's 97 one
