Would the better move to wait for closer to the NFL trade deadline?
Transcript
00:00Well, you're going to have to get past that for the rest of this year.
00:04I know. It's kind of productive because we can further address it.
00:07What's next is, but I mean, am I wrong here?
00:10Did the prices just across the board go up because of what the,
00:12because the Titans cleaned up here in terms of getting capital back?
00:17Well, they gave up, but it's really a player they gave up for sure.
00:21But it's a player that, okay, if the Titans think they're going nowhere,
00:25then why have a guy on your payroll who you're paying $28 million a year to
00:29or $30 million a year or two.
00:30So you see where that's going.
00:33And the Bears add a tremendous player to the defense.
00:36They already have a good defense.
00:37Now this defense has a chance to be great.
00:39That's the old don't be afraid to give the good for the great.
00:42The Bears have a cap space issue next year, but it's next year's problem.
00:46They're $41.7 million over the cap for next year.
00:52We know what happens.
00:54Restructuring of contracts, that's the season it's going to be next year
00:57for the Bears to be able to hang on to some of these guys.
01:00But, I mean, yeah, it throws it right in the direction of Brad Holmes
01:05and says, it screams, do something.
01:08You have to do something.
01:11You can't sit and do nothing.
01:13I don't think you can just go into the games after November 10th
01:19with the same roster you have today.
01:21I don't think you can do that.
01:23But not and expect to compete.
01:26The fans aren't going to stand for that.
01:28I know that things aren't done for the fans' sake,
01:31but the fans also can be pretty savvy and they know what they're doing.
01:34They know what they're talking about in a lot of cases.
01:36They want better.
01:37They want the chance to really go over the top.
01:40We've been hearing about the F-Them picks for 10 years with other teams
01:43that do it.
01:44You hired a GM from that organization that did the F-Them picks,
01:48and we're waiting for it to finally happen.
01:50Now is the right atmosphere, it feels like,
01:52for this team to go ahead and do something like that.
01:55But that player has to be available.
01:57And we've been talking a lot about secondary help.
02:01I've mentioned Budabaker's name a number of times over the last few weeks.
02:04And is this a guy that they can go get that would be an upgrade?
02:07And it would be an upgrade.
02:09I don't think it would have that same splash effect
02:11that Simmons is going to the Bears, but it would be a nice one.
02:15But does this open up the possibility of, you know what,
02:18why not go ahead and double down on the strength?
02:21And I look at what odds are.
02:24The odds are for the next team, for this certain player,
02:27Detroit is number one.
02:29I was stunned to see that this morning.
02:32And it's Max Crosby.
02:34How on earth are the Lions still...
02:36Hold on, what?
02:38The Lions are linked to Max Crosby.
02:41What are the odds?
02:42What are you talking about?
02:43The, if I go to the Jimmy Shapiro odds for...
02:49Oh, I've got to find this again.
02:51Sorry, I haven't seen this, so I don't know what to reference.
02:54So Max Crosby's next team.
02:55Yep.
02:56These are the latest odds from Vegas.
02:58The number one team listed is Detroit Lions at 5-1 odds,
03:02followed by Dallas at 6-1, San Francisco at 6-1,
03:05the Bears at 7-1.
03:06Cross the Bears off that list.
03:08Yeah.
03:09For some reason, the Lions are still linked with Max Crosby in Vegas parlance.
03:17I don't think it would make sense, and yet...
03:20Does it?
03:23So, why?
03:25And I'm not against this if Vegas is, like, giving them away,
03:30but if they...
03:32And we've got to keep this in mind.
03:34Sorry, literally, you have Las Vegas, the team, and then Vegas odds.
03:37That's a good point, yeah.
03:38A little bit of confusion.
03:40Why would the Lions be the favorite to land a player
03:45at a position where they are getting production,
03:47they have one of the best in the game,
03:50they're getting home?
03:52Look, it would strengthen their defense, no question.
03:57But if you...
03:58And this is where I've got to be careful.
04:00If you're going to give up the kind of capital it would take
04:02to get Max Crosby, why wouldn't you do it to get a corner?
04:05Because that corner might not be available.
04:06There might not be a Max Crosby of corners available.
04:09And Max Crosby may not be available.
04:11He may not be.
04:12That's weird, man.
04:14Yes.
04:14When did that come out?
04:17This was...
04:1721 hours ago.
04:19I would like to update it now.
04:20Now that the Bears are out and...
04:23They have odds for Jonathan Taylor, Max Crosby, and Saquon Barkley.
04:30The Lions...
04:31Not involved with the right backs, no.
04:32I wouldn't think so.
04:33But I wouldn't have thought they'd be involved for an edge rusher either,
04:37except you do have two edge rushers at all times on the field,
04:40and I can understand the logic behind it
04:43because Max Crosby is like a mirror image of Aiden Hutchinson.
04:46Two guys with relentless motors that get after the quarterback
04:49and give him less time to throw to expose your weakened secondary.
04:53Okay.
04:54This is, again, for people just joining us,
04:56Jeffrey Simmons, all-pro defensive tackle,
04:58just gets traded from Tennessee to the Chicago Bears
05:02for two first-round picks and a fourth-round pick.
05:06The Bears will also get a fifth-round pick back.
05:10You know what this is?
05:11This is the house down the street
05:13just sold for way more than you expected.
05:17And so the price of your house that's for sale goes up
05:20because a house in your neighborhood went for above market value.
05:24Yeah.
05:24And then there's a flip side of that.
05:26And that's why I'm afraid
05:28that that's actually going to bring this trade market to a halt.
05:31Now, I'm not saying Simmons isn't worth two firsts and a fourth,
05:37but I am saying I think sellers just are going to start asking for more.
05:43Well, I think when you're selling, you're always asking for more.
05:45That's part of negotiating, right?
05:47Negotiation process.
05:48But I don't necessarily think, Doug,
05:49the whole market's going to change because of this.
05:51So I want to calm you down a little bit.
05:53I'm just saying it's in the back of my mind
05:55and it's starting to creep towards the front of my mind.
05:58I know.
05:58And I want you to keep it in the back of your mind
05:59because I think, although I think that's a hefty price to pay,
06:03it's not a crazy overpay for the type of player that Jeffrey Simmons is.
06:07But the first call, now this might have nothing to do with ink.
06:09Sorry to interrupt.
06:10The first call we get is give up a first for Buda Baker now.
06:13Buda Baker for a first wasn't ever on the radar.
06:16But the first caller is give up a first for Buda Baker.
06:20I think overpaying now would be a mistake too.
06:24Sorry, I apologize.
06:25That's okay.
06:25No, I think, yeah, you don't want to overpay
06:28unless it's a guy that you really, really want.
06:30Clearly, the Bears really, really wanted Jeffrey Simmons
06:33because guess what?
06:33They didn't even necessarily need Jeffrey Simmons.
06:36If you look at the numbers and the production,
06:38their defensive line has been playing pretty well this year.
06:41They just added to a strength, to be honest with you.
06:44And that's what scares you as a Lions fan is like,
06:47it's one thing to see Seattle and the Niners doing something.
06:50They're in the conference, so that is a little scary.
06:52But when teams in your division start trying to get better,
06:54no matter where it is, whether adding to a weakness or a strength,
06:57you don't want to get lapped and you don't want to get passed up.
07:00And that doesn't mean you have to make a move.
07:02You don't force anything.
07:03But it goes back to what Gator was kind of saying, though.
07:06Everyone's focused on getting the weakness better.
07:09You can also make the strengths better, too,
07:11which would help your weaknesses out.
07:13Now, I'm not saying go get Max Crosby,
07:15but everything should be on the table for this team, right?
07:17I mean, the Bears just wouldn't add it to a strength.
07:20The Lions could do the same thing if they wanted to, too,
07:22especially if there isn't any secondary help out there
07:24to be had at the right price.
07:27So let's say that the asking price is, again, two first-round picks
07:31because that's what Max Crosby was dealt for to Baltimore
07:33before Baltimore backed out of the deal on medicals,
07:37and clearly Max is playing.
07:39Would you give up two firsts for Max Crosby?
07:45I can't answer that without seeing what else the market bears.
07:48Like, if I can get a corner, a better corner for one of those firsts,
07:53I'd rather send one first for a great corner.
07:56But if a great corner is not available and this is the best player available,
08:01would I give up two firsts for Max Crosby?
08:04I got to think about that.
08:06My first gut instinct is no, but it's not a strong.
08:13Like, the more I think about this, it might change my mind.
08:172, 4, 8, 5, 3, 9, 97, 97 people.
08:20The NFL, the NFC North, strongest division in football,
08:23just got stronger.
08:24Two firsts and a fourth go from Chicago to Tennessee
08:28for all-pro defensive tackle Jeffrey Simmons,
08:31who's still producing at a high rate.
08:33His own a ton of money.
08:34Gator, what did you say the cap space was with the Bears for next year?
08:37They are minus 41.7.
08:39They're going to have to shed a lot of salary, but that's next year.
08:42That's just a, it's redoing a couple contracts thing
08:45is how that gets done.
08:46I think that's a lot to redo contracts, but...
08:49That's what the Lions do.
08:49The Lions did it for $30 million.
08:51It's a lot at $41 million to do that.
08:53And, you know, you have to have the players whose contracts...
08:56They do.
08:56Yeah.
08:57If those players want to get it done.
08:59It is.
08:59The other thing is they got to work.
09:00They got Caleb Williams is going to be coming up soon, too.
09:03And that's going to come in 60 plus.
09:05Carson Anderson, 97.1.
09:07And that's what they've done.
