00:00The Rajasthan local body polls are out.
00:03The verdict is out.
00:04It gives the BJP the numbers,
00:05but not quite the sweep that it would have wanted.
00:08The BJP has emerged as the single largest party,
00:11winning over 4,100 wards across the state.
00:14But the Congress is holding ground,
00:15and more than 2,200 independents have also won.
00:19Here's the full story.
00:34The BJP has won the numbers game in Rajasthan's urban polls.
00:39But it has not won the sweep it was looking for.
00:45Across 10,244 wards,
00:48BJP has won 4,179, around 41%.
00:54Congress has 3,613, around 35%.
00:59The independents have emerged as the third force,
01:03winning 2,273 wards, over 22%.
01:14The BJP has also secured clear majorities
01:17in five of Rajasthan's 10 municipal corporations.
01:21Congress has won,
01:22but four corporations have thrown up hung war debts.
01:31In the municipal councils too,
01:34BJP has the numerical advantage of 21,
01:37against Congress's 17,
01:39with independents controlling 9.
01:45The biggest setback for the BJP
01:48came on political home turf.
01:53Jalawar and Baraan,
01:54Vasundra Raji's long-standing strongholds,
01:57slipped away.
01:59Congress won Jalawar,
02:01while Aam Admi Party made its Rajasthan debut
02:03by taking Baraan.
02:05And in Chief Minister,
02:07Bhajanlal Sharma's Bharatpur,
02:09independents won 36 wards,
02:11against 20 for BJP
02:13and 7 for Congress.
02:15But there is another number
02:17that complicates the comparison.
02:20Since the last civic poll cycle,
02:23between 2019 and 2021,
02:26Rajasthan has added 2,770 wards,
02:30a 37% increase in the total number of seats.
02:33The BJP's tally of wards won,
02:36however, has risen by 57%.
02:39Congress's tally has increased by 19%.
02:44Congress has blamed the delimitation process,
02:47alleging the new boundaries
02:49disadvantaged the party.
02:51The verdict came amid the UGC agitation,
03:09CJP's activism and a sizable under-40 voter base.
03:13Several Gen Z candidates have also won.
03:17BJP has gained ground,
03:19but no sweep.
03:22And with over 2,200 independents winning,
03:25the bigger message is clear.
03:27BJP may have won the numbers,
03:29but independents hold the key to power
03:32in many local bodies.
