00:00you know her you love her cleveland.com the orange and brown talk podcast she is on the
00:07wise heart right we make it right call kyle wright hotline she is mary k cavett the introduction's
00:14better than the game from the other day i just want you to know that i'm mary k hey guys
00:19how
00:19you doing thanks for the intro thanks it's the least i can do i'm trying to be happy about
00:23something and talking to you makes me happy i'm just curious your thoughts on the game from the
00:29other day let's start there well i feel like people are kind of overreacting it was overreaction
00:37monday in a huge huge way really to the performance of deshaun watson it was not great it wasn't great
00:44but neither was the performance of baker mayfield he fumbled the ball away three times and nobody's
00:50talking about benching him of course he has a great track record with the bucks before that
00:55but still monday the first week of the season is it's a tough week and you have to remember
01:03deshaun watson was shaking off the rust of 22 months of not having played for 22 months
01:11693 days i think a lot of it was uh the mental aspect of wondering if he was going to
01:18be able to
01:18stay healthy after not having taken a hit in so long and coming off of two achilles surgeries so i
01:26think once he worked through some of that uh then i think he started to settle in a little bit
01:30in the
01:31second half and i agree with the decision to start him this week i would have been stunned had todd
01:37munkin made a move mary k it would have screamed to me well then why'd you name the guy the
01:41starter in
01:42the first place so i let's see it again and let's try and figure out exactly how they can make
01:48deshaun
01:49play better and see what what you get but it would have it would have stunned me had he made
01:54a move
01:54based on everything leading up to the decision they made in the first place yeah i think it would
02:00have been a knee-jerk reaction and look right matt stafford went out and he didn't have a good game
02:05other quarterbacks you can look to i haven't studied all of them uh but there are other quarterbacks
02:10who were not happy with their week one performance a lot of teams have new offenses new personnel and
02:16that's another thing with this cleveland browns offense everything's new the offensive line had
02:21not worked together yet they they really hadn't i mean austin barber he just started working at
02:26right guard three weeks ago he did a nice job but you don't have that that cohesiveness that you want
02:32to have on your offensive line and there were procedural penalties there were pre-snap penalties
02:37there were holding calls there were issues so i do think that it was just a collective
02:43sort of meltdown on a part of an offense that really hasn't worked together very much yet
02:49so you just do you think that sunday's game was just a blip on the radar
02:55i wouldn't say that i i just i just think that it was a rocky rough start for everyone including
03:02dashawn and i think that the worst thing uh that he did was throw that interception right the red
03:08zone interception on that first drive who knows how things might have gone differently if he didn't
03:14make that very horrible decision i'm not saying that he played well i'm saying that he was one piece
03:19of a bad puzzle of a bad performance uh that just didn't go well and i mean if you look
03:23back to even
03:24last season i mean all you have to do is look at every single quarterback that tried to step
03:29into this cleveland browns offense and try to do something with it and none of them could really
03:34make much hay out of it even joe flacco who then went on to throw for 300 yards a game
03:39in cincinnati so this is an offense with its challenges it's brand new and and i do think that
03:46it will get better as it goes along there's a lot of young guys there were four rookies starting on
03:50this offense they don't all know the terminology as quickly as they need to and again i think there
03:56were offensive line challenges mary k when todd made his initial decision he said this is not a
04:04week-to-week thing and then as you led up to the opener he said gives us the best chance
04:08to win in
04:09jacksonville and then yesterday he used the word anticipate the sean to start coming up so it it it almost
04:19gives you the feel that okay maybe some support is sliding a little bit what do you think it would
04:25take how long might it take if if by chance it doesn't start to click for them to make a
04:32move
04:34well todd keeps saying over and over and over again that he's not going to let fan reaction dictate his
04:41quarterback decision but i do i do think uh that you have to think long and hard about starting him
04:47september 27th against the panthers if he does not play well at all in tampa so i think he's going
04:53to
04:53have to go out and do the best he can to play as well as he possibly can again quarterbacks
04:58are not
04:58playing in a vacuum you cannot isolate his performance and just say it was only him it had
05:04nothing to do with a fumble by kc it had nothing to do with holding calls by zion it had
05:09nothing to
05:10do with anything else the whole offense has got to try to come together as best it possibly can now
05:16they know how some of these guys are going to operate in the heat of the moment maybe they can
05:20throw
05:20some things out maybe they can put some things in uh we do know that dylan sampson probably is not
05:26going to play in this game we saw him on crutches and with a knee brace he was going to
05:31be a big part
05:32of that game plan trying to get the ball in his hands and uh you know in some of some
05:36of the screens
05:37and short yardage game and now they have to pivot there but they have to find things that they can
05:42do
05:43well in this game so that everybody can feel confident about their performance um do you think
05:50this going back and we were kind of discussing it last segment and during the break a little bit
05:56about deshaun watson and his fear of getting hit i i didn't realize until we went back and watched the
06:00replay on that last touchdown how far back deshaun had dropped to throw the touchdown pass and you know
06:07to take seven to take a seven step drop after a shotgun uh for hike it just seems where i
06:13i is that
06:15uh maybe the jitters you were talking about or is that do you think that's by design with a new
06:20offensive line it could be the jitters it could be the fact that he really hasn't even worked with
06:25this offensive line very much yet and he doesn't know what to expect from them they don't know what
06:29to expect from him and as i had been saying if you were going to try to set deshaun watson
06:36up to be
06:37your starter and give him the best chance to go out and be successful he needed more time with the
06:41first team offense in camp he just did even if you were still running the competition if you
06:46suspected that he was in the lead most of the way then you needed to give him more time you
06:51needed to
06:52give him more of a chance to figure these guys out and you needed that starting 11 working together
06:57but now they just have to make do with what they have who knows if shador sanders would have
07:03performed any better we just don't know the answer to that question nobody knows that uh like i said
07:08it's a whole offense collectively that is trying to come together and perform in a brand new scheme
07:16and i just don't know if shador would have done any better and if shador had a stat line of
07:24one
07:24touchdown one interception i think it was 16 of 22 and a 97.7 rating with a 46 yard touchdown
07:32pass
07:32to denzel boston i mean i would everybody be clamoring for him to be benched after that i
07:39mean maybe or would they be but would they be saying some of those fourth quarter numbers are
07:43padded too because that's i mean deshaun's getting people say that it could be they could have been
07:47saying that yeah you're right they could have been saying that absolutely they could have been saying
07:50that but i think shador would get the benefit of the doubt a little bit whereas in this town
07:56in this time frame deshaun is never going to get that here he's not going to be allowed to go
08:03out
08:03and stumble out of the gate and get the benefit of the doubt from people so i do think his
08:08leash is
08:09shorter because of that because people don't have the tolerance for that and if todd munkin really is
08:15going to make his decisions based purely on football then he really is going to have to put the blinders
08:20on
08:21and block out the noise because unless deshaun goes out there and plays really really really well
08:26in tampa it's going to be hard for him to come back to huntington bank field and not have uh
08:33you
08:34know just a hostile crowd there mary k cabot joining us plain dealer cleveland.com the orange and brown
08:40talk podcast the offense obviously had issues mary k the jags scored in their first four possessions
08:47and six of their first seven until they kind of called off the dogs is is that a huge concern
08:53or
08:53was jacksonville just that good well i think jacksonville is excellent and i think liam cohen
08:59has obviously done an amazing amazing job with that team and with trevor lawrence that was their ninth
09:04straight victory they almost beat the bills in the playoffs and so that's part of it uh they ran into
09:10a red red hot football team that was ready for this football game uh once again you're dealing with a
09:16brand new defensive coordinator you're dealing with the loss of miles garrett you're dealing with
09:21the loss of alex right and they just couldn't generate any pressure and i think that it was all
09:27new for jared verse and i think he now knows uh that he's got a lot of responsibility on his
09:32shoulders
09:33and he's going to have to pivot and find ways uh to beat the chips and the double teams that
09:38he's going
09:38to get they're going to have to generate pressure from other ways uh mike rutenberg is going to have
09:43to go back to the drawing board a little bit and and find ways to make sure uh that they
09:48can disrupt
09:48a quarterback you certainly want to be doing that with baker mayfield on sunday whether it's blitzing
09:53uh whatever the case may be uh a different kind of rotation i'm not sure exactly how he can draw
10:00it
10:00up to get more pressure but he's going to have to do that all right give me something positive from
10:06last week's game something you thought was like okay we move forward with this good luck
10:11well i think the positive i think one positive is the fact that you've got two really good
10:17rookie offensive linemen who look like the future is very bright for them uh denzel boston did a really
10:23nice job catching that pass against a starting cornerback so that was good um some special teams
10:31there were moments there with the 74 yard kickoff return so there are some things to build on but some
10:38alarm bells also went off and they have to address them and they have to address them as quickly as
10:43they can because they are going into a hornet's nest in tampa this weekend baker mayfield is coming off
10:49that three fumble game and then he's also this is his revenge bowl he's going to want this in the
10:54absolute worst way he's going against the guy that they chucked him aside for and and he wants revenge in
11:01this game and his teammates are going to want to back him up it's going to be on the road
11:04it's going to be
11:05loud and uh and it's going to be a hard game to win there you have it mary k cabot
