Wazalendo fighters have set up a hand washing station at their checkpoint about 20 km (12 miles) from the entrance to the city of Butembo, on the road to Beni, as part of efforts to raise public awareness about measures to prevent the spread of Ebola. The Wazalendo fighters are also raising awareness among passers by about the disease and urging them to follow health measures aimed at limiting its spread.
The response to the Ebola outbreak is continuing in the Democratic Republic of Congo. According to government authorities, 7,258 cases have been confirmed, including 1,726 recoveries and 3,510 deaths. Ituri remains the epicentre of the outbreak, accounting for 78% of confirmed cases.
