00:00that's right the drive is live and we're live here on a thursday heading into what has become a very
00:06important game on sunday for the houston texans a lot to get to today and right off the bat clint
00:12there is clint there's tyler looking beautiful as always um you know you can see that's you that's
00:18beautiful i mean appreciate beautiful so sweet yes no i mean now he's sharp he's handsome he's
00:26beautiful i mean i am a handsome devil he's disappointed he's a pale bearded white man
00:30with his hat on backwards he's beautiful he's disappointed me and i and i think the oc
00:35honestly he disappoints me too because they've got the same problem they have good hair and they
00:39wear hats over them and they wear them backwards and now nick kayley who is going to join us here
00:43is is he ready to go nick kayley with us nick you you got too good a hair too to
00:47just keep wearing
00:48a hat on top of it you guys you guys give some great compliments man i'll tell you that i
00:53mean
00:53you guys treat each other so well i enjoy here hey is it handsome sharp or beautiful nick which
00:59one are you going with if you had to pick man sharp sharp there you go there you go to
01:04my point
01:04i think you're beautiful too nick uh damn sure was sunday i'll tell you that nick you're beautiful
01:09on sunday baby yes here it is we are uh we're joined here on the drive uh with the uh
01:14offensive
01:15coordinator nick kayley and uh speaking of sunday obviously it didn't turn out the way you guys
01:20wanted to but based off what we saw last year i mean you i mean i know you're you're your
01:27head
01:27and buried in the sand you heard you've heard everything that's been talked about in the
01:30offseason with the offense what was different sunday compared to things we watched last year
01:36yeah i just think you know uh there was a higher level of consistency across the board still not you
01:42know not where we needed to be we got plenty of room for improvement but i just thought you know
01:46it was a culmination of a great spring a great training camp in terms of you know consistent
01:50improvement okay from where we ended the year uh to where we're at now um more cohesiveness i just
01:56think more time on task um you know and there was just a higher level of consistency whether that was
02:01you know from an operation standpoint whether that was from a fundamental standpoint just from an
02:04execution standpoint nick how how good was was cj look between the fumbles i mean i'm a guy that i'm
02:12known for a turnover in my career so i understand how valuable turnovers actually are and you don't want
02:17to start that way or in that way i get it 100 but between those two turnovers i just watching
02:24the
02:24film man it was crazy how often cj strout appeared to be right in those moments and from the offensive
02:31coordinators perspective uh between those two turnovers the play between how how good and how
02:36how right was cj the majority of the time yeah and i thought he i thought he did a great
02:41job i thought
02:41he you know played on time i thought he you know saw the field extremely well um you know he
02:46was
02:46delivering accurate passes you know he just he had a great feel man he was in rhythm great command in
02:50the huddle great communication on the sideline i mean it was consistent in every facet um so you know
02:55i thought he did a great job um leading um getting us in out of the huddle getting us into
02:59good
03:00situations and i thought he was able to distribute the football um you know to his teammates nick hit a
03:05little bit you can't just avoid the turnovers right i mean and being an old quarterback i'm fascinated
03:10with all the drills and kind of how you address that can you talk to the listeners a little bit
03:16about just the quarterback movement ball protection and things and how often y'all emphasize that and
03:21how often you work on it i know it's a big deal a big part of the messaging throughout the
03:26program but
03:26just just after seeing that like what how do you respond how do you work on it what do y
03:31'all do
03:32at practice yeah i think i think you know we always you know put a premium on ball security
03:37i thought as a team you know we did a solid job last year i think you know we never
03:41want to put
03:42you know any balls on the ground period so what we do is we just we put a light on
03:45it we talk about
03:46you know anytime there's exposure risks on film quarterbacks two hands on the ball transferring up
03:51uh you know skilled players out in the field on abrupt cuts when they're putting their foot in the
03:55ground as the ball getting away from your your rib cage you know being able to have aggressive hands
03:59at the catch point getting friendly negative coming downhill on in cuts out cuts etc so we try to harp
04:05on
04:05those things um you know we spend a good amount of time you know detailing those and then you know
04:09we got back to work yesterday starting off our uh you know practice with with ball security drills
04:13for all players um you know non-linemen but um the skill players the quarterbacks etc i think you
04:18should let some of them linemen get a little ball security action in there i want to see i feel
04:21like
04:22i feel like a recovery drill yeah yeah by the way i'm waiting on that blake fisher pass all right
04:27we sit
04:27up in the press box every single week waiting on that blake fisher pass i'm just waiting on it i
04:31can't
04:31hey man he's making good improvement he's done a good job he's continuing to get better
04:34i bet so nick cayley uh offensive coordinator joining us here on the drive how would you
04:40assess the run game that was a big talk talking point in the offseason with the offensive line
04:45and the revamped offensive line how would you describe what you've what you uh you guys were
04:49able to do in the run game sunday yeah you know i thought those guys did a really good job
04:53i thought
04:53they played physical um i thought they were able to carve out yards i thought we stayed connected to
04:57blocks i thought i just thought the the the cohesiveness between whether it's gap double teams
05:02combination blocks all those things were you know for the most part clean is there room for
05:07improvement absolutely i mean it's not where we want to be i think uh you know we we want to
05:11do a
05:11lot better than that but i thought it was a good you know there were there were some moments where
05:14we
05:14had some really positive things going on situationally we were able to get the ball in on the goal line
05:19uh you know pleased with that you know same thing short yardage you know like get them all pick them
05:23all
05:23up obviously but i thought that there were some positives and there's there's plenty of stuff and still a lot
05:28of
05:28meat on the bone we can coach off of uh to be able to try to continue to move the
05:31needle uh as we
05:32progress through the early part of the season here coach you lose higgins in the uh in training camp
05:38obviously and and now nico's hamstring is is uh appearing to be acting up at least reportedly you
05:44know what as an offensive coordinator when you start losing guys of that caliber um you know what's your
05:50what's your mindset 11 guys had catches last week that that's a that's a hell of a start is to
05:55spread
05:55the football around but just your your approach when you start you start losing bodies like that
06:01especially guys that are that that good and that important yeah sure well the approach is this i
06:05mean you you look you stay present you look forward at the same time and you sit there and you
06:09gotta
06:09it's the next man up mentality and and that's the truth it's not trying to be cliche about it but
06:14it's the national football league you know i mean yeah you you get we we're all here to do a
06:18job and
06:19and we try to put guys in position uh you know let's just call receivers tight ends backs those guys
06:24are
06:24you know same with the line to be quite honest with you we move those guys around uh it's not
06:28just for you know to waste time it's to get them exposure to other areas to have position versatility
06:33and flex um to be able to adjust and move and that's our job is to be able to be
06:37ready uh you
06:38know if it happens in a game or it happens prior to us getting to the game you know we're
06:42always you
06:42know trying to trying to be at our best to adjust uh when need be and the thing i would
06:47say with our
06:47with our roster and just system from a nomenclature standpoint we have the ability to be able to tweak
06:51groupings and move guys around i would say relatively easy in terms of identification of
06:56okay x to f f to z z to y to f as a tight end f to adjuster if
07:01it's multiple tight ends so we we try
07:04to throw a lot of those guys in the spring and in training camp and um you know and the
07:08expectation
07:08is everybody's got to be ready anyway and and that's that's where our mindset is are there coach
07:13are there any players that if they aren't available to you that change the way that you approach
07:20things or is it i would go ahead go ahead no no go ahead sorry no i'm just saying is
07:24there are
07:24there any players that change the approach of how you do things or is it just a as you said
07:29next man
07:30up mentality i think it's i think there's a balance right i think you know there there's a balance that
07:34you know you have your core axioms for what you want to do but again before anything i'm never going
07:39to be rigid we're never going to be rigid where it's oh it's this system the system always is
07:43is really tailored around your players i mean that that's the reality of it but within that you you have
07:49guys that are in different roles that have experience and time on task running you know
07:53whether it's specific routes certain uh run game combinations uh you know and and having the time
07:58on task to be able to work in those scenarios you know from from you know off season on to
08:02now and so
08:03i think there's a blend and a balance of that um but we're always you have to be able to
08:08adjust
08:08you have to be able to change course um that's the name of the game and you know you got
08:13to be
08:13flexible and so we're always prepared to do those things um you know certainly you know that that's what
08:19our job is so i think it's week by week you know it's what personnel is available at the game
08:23each
08:24week etc to your point and then you go and you you try to find uh you know the best
08:28roles to be able
08:29to put our guys in position to have success for us what about jaylen noel coach i i every ever
08:34since
08:34he's been here the one thing is if you go to practice and watch you guys which we do a
08:38lot
08:38at least in the training camp and otas and things of that nature if you just follow the ball it
08:43seemed to
08:44it seemed to find jaylen noel pretty often if he was healthy the ball would find him once again
08:48he's on the field not as much this this past weekend but he ends up being the second leading
08:52receiver behind nico collins i believe talk to us a little bit about what that guy brings to the
08:58table and and kind of what what your expectations are for him specifically yeah you know jaylen's got
09:04dynamic skills you know he can he's explosive he can run he can stretch the field but he also he's
09:10not
09:10just a one-trick pony from that standpoint you know we we spent a lot of good time this offseason
09:13too working on other things you know and you come in as a rookie a year ago and you you
09:18don't have
09:19truly a full full offseason you're missing some of that time in phase one prior to uh rookie mini
09:23camp etc and then you and then after you get a chance to spend you know call it a season
09:27and plus
09:28with them you get an opportunity to put these guys and see what they can do and put them in
09:31different situations so we try to expand those for a lot of our players at least get some exposure to
09:35them doing things and he really can do a lot of different things for us um clearly you see the
09:39explosiveness the play you know the playmaking ability in space the speed he's got all those
09:44but he's a he's a really hard-working guy with a great spirit about him great energy and um he
09:49just brings a good vibe every day as well too all right uh coach we appreciate you jumping on with
09:53this uh and uh again a big time performance uh the first week out and uh good luck this week
09:59against
09:59the bangles in a big game for you all yeah thank you guys appreciate you guys and hope you have
10:03a good day man
