00:17Hi, good afternoon to all our viewers, I'm Suesha Samth and this week on Pollution Ka
00:21Solution we are talking about the solutions that could potentially work in Delhi's pollution
00:26hotspots. We bring you four such suggested innovations from giant air filtering cubes,
00:33two technology that claim to reduce our exposure to pollution, two devices that can turn a car
00:39into a moving air purifier and even a system that combines air filtration with renewable energy.
00:46Let's find out together how practical these solutions are. First we begin with a technology
00:53that has already been tested in one of Germany's pollution hotspots. In 2018 and Stuttgart emerged
01:00as one of Germany's worst affected locations for particulate matter and hazardous gases. The
01:06response was not just to measure the pollution but to try and tackle it at the source. German
01:12filtration specialist Mann plus Hummel deployed its innovative filter cubes designed specifically for
01:20pollution hotspots and aimed at improving local air quality and the company says the results were
01:26significant. Now Rajan Honda, managing director of OK Play in India believes that Delhi needs solutions
01:33that are not just innovative but already tested in the real world. For him Mann plus Hummel's filter cube
01:41is one such possibility but can a technology designed for pollution hotspots in Germany have a role to
01:46play in a city like Delhi. Let's find out.
02:03My name is Rajan Honda and I am the director of MRS Technologies Private Limited.
02:11MRS Technologies Private Limited is the exclusive partner to Mann & Hummel Germany for the manufacturing,
02:18selling and servicing of their air filtration products for India. Mann & Hummel is an
02:2480-year-old German German MNC which is working with 80% of the ratio of the population.
02:34air pollution is now actually the price that we pay for development.
02:39The amount of our infrastructure is developing, whether there are road buildings, bridges, metro,
02:46some buildings, offices, residences, these are all that contribute to pollution.
02:53The fact is that we are doing this campaign
02:55is really, really remarkable because we all need to understand. It's just not the government
03:02which has to do this. It's a public-private participation where we all must be aware of the
03:07a. the consequences of pollution and b. how we can mitigate those risks.
03:12This product you are watching behind me is called filter cube. This is used by forced air circulation

05:36So, together we bring to you the pollution ka solution that you see behind us, which is called as Filter
05:43Cube.
05:52I am a mother of a nine-year-old daughter.
05:55And she is today living in Delhi and smoking equivalent to 80 cigarettes a day.
06:02My child is closed when the pollution increases.
06:07Most of the time, she has to study her at home.
06:10And these are the early learning years, which is shaped by her personality.
06:16That's why she has to spend more time on her at home.
06:19This is a very big problem.
06:21Today, when I stand here in front of you, I may appear to you as a young person,
06:27but my inner health today has deteriorated to a level that I have lost 12 years of my life.
06:38This one machine that you see behind me is almost 17,500-meter cube of clean air every hour.
06:46If you want to understand it in liters or if I want to give you a perspective of it,
06:52In a cricket stadium, the amount of water is filled with the amount of water every hour.
06:56So, this one machine is cleaned in the area.
07:00So, we use multiple machines like this.
07:02So, what we try to do is create a clean air zone for that area.
07:07So, the localized pollution that comes to people's limits.
07:15This device is so intelligent.

07:31In this device, we also have a night mode.
07:35Meaning, at night, when we don't have any dense population around,
07:41we can bring down the speed of the fan to around minimal,
07:45where we don't need much clean air coming out of the system.
07:48It does all on its own.
07:51And also, we have a centralized dashboard.
07:54Meaning, when we have 100 installations at different places.
07:58Cannot Place, A Block, B Block, C Block.
08:00We can put it in any area.
08:02Then, we can give you a dashboard in one area.
08:05We can give you a dashboard.
08:07We can give you a data on every product level, zone level, and also as a city level.
08:17Delhi's ambient air remains unhealthy for large parts of the year,
08:21with consequences that go beyond just what we breathe.
08:25The question, therefore, is whether we can find solutions that work throughout the year,
08:30particularly at pollution hotspots where people are exposed to higher concentrations.
08:35Rajiv Chanan, an innovator based in Gurugram, claims to have developed a technology designed
08:40for year-round use, the idea is simple, identify where exposure is highest and intervene there.
08:47But how does the technology work and can it make a meaningful difference to the air we breathe?
09:12My name is Rajiv Chanan and I am the founder and managing director of Human-Dust Technologies,
09:19which we formed in 2018 with the objective of developing innovative technologies
09:25in the field of energy and environment.
09:28The area of Delhi is 1500 km2.
09:31There are about 1,000,000 liters of petrol, diesel and CNG every day consumed.
09:40So generally Delhi's dimension is very big if we look at it from a pollution standpoint.
09:47So not only controlling AQI, but controlling exposure is also important.
09:52So in effect, Delhi requires, in our opinion, a permanent structure,
09:58permanent infrastructure to control air pollution which is coming.
10:04So our technology objective is to reduce exposure reduction.
10:10Policy implementation, policy thrust, new policies are very good to control overall ambient to reduce pollution.
10:18APS stands for ambient purification system.
10:21It is partly meant for particulate matter.
10:26An idea behind this is that we are supposed to make a system and technology for outdoor where you install
10:34it once
10:35and it should continue to run without any attention intervention for 15-20 years.
10:41Because the minute you put something in outdoor, it has to be sustainable
10:46and it should not require frequent attention.
10:50And we designed the storage capacity to be roughly three to five years
10:55so that nobody needs to go in and service the equipment, you know, every now and then.
11:01It would once required in one in three years or one in five years.
11:06And then particulate matter, safe disposal of the material.
11:11So we still need to figure out what does it contain.
11:13It may contain many other particles, many other elements which may not be,
11:18you know, good for human health.
11:20So it has to be disposed.
11:22So idea behind was that we should reduce exposure to the people
11:27and hence the machine should come closer to the people.
11:31Wherever, in outdoor, there are large people like ISVT, railway station, market places.
11:39We should bring equipment closer to the people, reduce their exposure.
11:44That in APS, there is no filter in any way.
11:48So this means that you have to understand the most important thing in the outdoors
11:53that they will choke in two or three days
11:55or that their performance air delivery is reduced.
11:59So this means that there is no difference.
12:01There is a consistent performance in 15 years
12:05in all of the pollution levels
12:09and in all of the weather conditions.
12:12So it does not mean that the performance will come in the rain
12:15or in the summer or in the winter.
12:18It does not mean that the principle that we have used
12:21is the basic physics principle.
12:23that your particulate metal is heavier than air molecules.
12:29So you can suck air in a particular velocity
12:32with a particular angle.
12:34So that the heavier metals and heavier particles
12:38like PM2.5 and PM10
12:40they cannot travel the path of the air being taken into the system.
12:45So they tend to get separated from the balancer.
12:49So they tend to get separated from the balancer.
12:50So they also have agglomerate.
12:52So we have designed the wind tunnel design
12:54that there are two aspects.
12:55The first is that it agglomerates
12:57and the second is that the heavy particles
13:00reduce the velocity of the heavy particles.
13:02And when it comes to an area,
13:04it's low velocity and it's settled.
13:07So this is the principle of making the heavy particles
13:10we can separate it without any filter.
13:21Now imagine if the vehicles on Delhi's roads
13:25could do more than just transport us.
13:28What if instead of only adding to the pollution around them,
13:31they could actually help clean the air?
13:33A Delhi-based NGO, Shud Vayu,
13:36is working on a device that it says
13:37can be installed on the roof of a car
13:40and used to reduce particulate pollution around it.
13:44The organization claims its system is detachable
13:46and can be installed or removed in about 60 seconds.
13:50So could a car become more than
13:52just another source of emissions
13:54and actually become a moving air cleaning unit?

14:53visible and scalable solution.
14:56in this context we have developed without any external energy, without any digital or permanent
15:06structural or any fitting, this retrofit device we have built in the car, which you can
15:13put yourself in the car and you can put yourself in the car. When in Delhi there is pollution,
15:18you can put yourself in the car, but if you don't have pollution, you can put yourself in the store.
15:23We have been able to put your vehicle in the car, which hardly has one square foot space.

19:44But when we talk about a solution to pollution, there is another question we need to ask. Is it sustainable?
19:51Because a solution cannot simply solve one problem by creating another. And that brings us to our final innovation. Aerobos,
19:58alongside with IIT Kanpur, has developed what it calls a wind panel, a rooftop filtration technology designed to clean air
20:05while a vehicle is moving. But there is another element to it. The system combines air filtration with renewable energy,
20:12energy generation, using both a solar film and a wind turbine. So can one technology potentially tackle pollution's exposure while
20:21also generating clean energy?

22:22And with that, it produces around 2-3 kW of energy, which also produces a product.
