00:22Let us pray
00:26Praise, honor and glory be to you, O Christ
00:29Who, when your disciples and friends deserted and left you
00:33Remained alone in the hands of sinful men
00:37Like a most gentle lamb
00:38Within the jaws of a ravenous wolf
00:43Strengthen my excessive weakness
00:45And confirm my too great unstableness
00:47By the support of your grace
00:49And join me to yourself with the bonds of love
00:53That I may neither have no wish nor the power
00:56Ever to depart or separate myself from you
01:01Praise, honor and glory be to you, O Christ
01:04Who allowed yourself to be led around bound
01:07By an armed band and taken to Annas
01:12Allowing yourself to be stood before him
01:14As though you were a common criminal or robber
01:19O unspeakable gentleness of my Redeemer
01:22Look, while they take and drag and thrust you forward
01:27You uttered not a single word of complaint
01:30Or murmur or word of resistance
01:33But in silence you followed them wherever they led you
01:37Obeying their commands
01:39And permitted their wanton injuries to you
01:44Grant, O Lord, that these your virtues may shine in me
01:47To the everlasting glory of your name
01:51Praise, honor and glory be to you, O Christ
01:54King of heaven and earth
01:55Who in great humility
01:57As poor and needy and of no account
02:00Was stood before the proud high priest
02:03And most sweetly endured the dreadful blow
02:07Which his impious servant put upon you
02:12Restrain, I beg you
02:13In me all outbreak of anger and passion
02:17Suppress all acts of indignation
02:20And quench within me all desire of revenge
02:24That when I am provoked by injury
02:27I may not be disturbed
02:28I may offer no resistance
02:31May suffer no disquiet
02:34But endure everything with a quiet mind
02:36May I even repay evil with good
02:41Praise, honor and glory be to you, O Christ
02:43Who permitted himself to be led bound
02:46In a shameful manner to Caiaphas
02:48That you might deliver us from the penalty
02:51Of eternal death
02:52Restoring to us true liberty
02:56Make me most ready
02:58To endure every reproach
02:59And all contempt for your name's sake
03:03Grant that in the very middle
03:05Of ridicule and outrage
03:06I may give you thanks with a perfect heart
03:09And by means of these trials
03:11May grow and increase more and more
03:14In your love
03:18Praise, honor and glory be to you, O Christ
03:20Who, when three times denied
03:23By your apostle Peter
03:26Mercifully turned and looked upon him
03:28With kindness
03:29And brought him to repentance
03:31And holy sorrow for his sin
03:33In like manner
03:34May you turn upon me also
03:37Your eye of mercy and love
03:39That I may weep over my past sins
03:42With the tears of true penitence
03:44And may never again commit them
03:47May I never be found sinning
03:49Against your goodness
03:50In word or deed
03:54Praise, honor and glory be to you, O Christ
03:56Who stood before the elders
03:58And the people of the Jews
03:59With a calm countenance
04:00And humble look
04:02Who did not refuse to be falsely accused
04:05And to suffer many injuries
04:09Give me grace never to say an untrue word
04:11Or to falsely accuse my neighbour
04:14But that I may bear with all quietness of heart
04:17The calumnies that are heaped upon me
04:21Casting all my troubles upon you
04:23May I always, in silence
04:25Look for the grave and consolation
04:28At your hands
04:32Praise, honor and glory be to you, O Christ
04:35Who, when Caiaphas the High Priest
04:38Adjured you by the name of God
04:41Declared the truth
04:42And proclaimed yourself the Son of God
04:44And did not refuse to be counted by him
04:47And the rest who stood by as a blasphemer
04:50May I fully abhor this contempt
04:53And defence against you
04:54May I, in every place
04:57Reverence the presence of your divinity and majesty
05:03May I think of you
05:04Adore, praise and love you
05:07Above all things
05:08Forever and forever
05:11Amen
05:15O Lord, open our lips
05:17And our mouths shall sing your praise
05:26O be joyful in the Lord
05:30O be joyful in the Lord
05:32O be glad
05:33Serve the Lord with gladness
05:37And come in one
05:39In presence with a child
05:43Be sure that the Lord
05:47He is God
05:49He is God
05:51It is he that shall fail us
05:53That not we ourselves
05:55We are his people
05:58And the sheep of his pasture
06:01Who do your way
06:05Who do your way
06:05To his peace with majesty
06:07And into his God
06:12With grace
06:13Be thankful to him
06:17And speak to the Lord
06:20Of his name
06:22For the Lord is gracious
06:25His mercy
06:28His mercy is everlasting
06:31And his truth
06:34And pureth from generation
06:37To generation
06:38To generation
06:41To generation
06:45Glory be to the Father
06:49And to the Son
06:51And to the Holy Ghost
06:56As it was in the beginning
06:59Is now and ever shall be
07:05World without end
07:13Amen
07:25I will only thank you
07:29To the Lord
07:31His grace shall ever be
07:36In my heart
07:38My soul shall make a rose
07:42In the Lord
07:44The humble shall heal
07:48Their hope and demand
07:50O praise the Lord with me
07:56And let us magnify his name
08:01To gather
08:02I sought the Lord
08:06And he heard me
08:08Yea, he delivered me
08:12And of all my name
08:17May I have a life to him
08:21And the light
08:23And the light
08:25And their faces
08:27Were not ashamed
08:29The Lord for crying
08:33And the Lord with me
08:38Yea, and sing and sing
08:42Out of all his trouble
08:45The angel of the Lord
08:50And the Lord's heaven
08:51For the Lord's heaven
08:53And let me and hear
08:55And delivereth them
09:00O taste and see
09:03How gracious for God is
09:08Blessed is the man
09:11That's just where we feel
09:14O fear the Lord
09:18He that are His saints
09:21O they that bear you
09:25Like the fruit
09:27The ones who lack
09:30And suffer hunger
09:33But they who seek the law

13:09A reading from the Gospel according to St. Luke, Chapter 5.
13:15Jesus was standing by the lake of Geddeseret, and the crowd was pressing around him to hear the word of
13:21God.
13:23He saw two boats by the lake, but the fishermen had gotten out of them and were washing their nets.
13:29He got into one of the boats, which was Simon's, and asked him to put out a little way from
13:35the shore.
13:37Then Jesus sat down and taught the crowd from the boat.
13:41When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon,
13:43Put out into the deep water and lower your nets for a catch.
13:49Simon answered,
13:51Master, we worked hard all night and caught nothing, but in your word I will lower the nets.
13:59When they had done this, they caught so many fish that their nets started to tear.
14:04So they mentioned to their partners in the other boat to come and help them.
14:10And they came and filled both boats, so that they were about to sink.
14:15But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying,
14:19Go away from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man.
14:24For Peter and all who were with him were astonished at the catch of fish that they had taken.
14:30And so were James and John and Zebedee's sons, who were Simon's business partners.
14:37Then Jesus said to Simon,
14:40Do not be afraid.
14:41From now on you will be catching people.
14:45So when they had brought their boats to shore, they left everything and followed him.
14:52While Jesus was in one of the turns, a man came to him, who was covered with leprosy.
14:59When he saw Jesus, he bowed down with his face to the ground and begged him,
15:03Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.
15:07And so he stretched out his hand and touched him, saying,
15:10I am willing, be clean.
15:14And immediately the leprosy left him.
15:18Then he ordered the man to tell no one, but commanded them,
15:21Go and show yourself to a priest, and bring the offering for your cleansing,
15:26as Moses commanded, as a testimony to them.
15:30But when news about him spread even more,
15:33and large crowds gathered to hear him, and to be healed of their illnesses,
15:39and yet Jesus frequently withdrew himself into the wilderness and prayed.
15:45This is the word of the Lord.
15:48Thanks be to God.
15:54Sometimes it's hard to accept God's instructions.
15:58They just don't make any sense.
16:02This morning we read of the meeting of Jesus with Simon,
16:05to be called Peter, and a number of the other disciples.
16:09They had been working out in their fishing boats all night,
16:12but had caught nothing.
16:15They knew that the best time to catch fish was by night,
16:18and if the night had not been productive,
16:21they really failed to see how the following day could be any better.
16:27We should note, however, Simon's reaction.
16:31Whilst he stated the obvious,
16:33he went on to say that he would do as he was asked,
16:37with the result that they managed a huge catch.
16:41As I said, sometimes it just does not make a great deal of sense.
16:46But we have to learn to accept that God knows best.
16:50We cannot know what God knows,
16:52and as a result we must have faith and learn to trust without reservation.
16:58In this instance, the result of a little faith was a great miracle,
17:03perhaps not on the scale of some that we are to see later in the ministry of Jesus.
17:09But for these simple fishermen,
17:11it was enough to show them that this was not just a teacher or prophet,
17:15but the Lord indeed.
17:18And we should also note the spontaneous reaction of Peter in verse 8.
17:26What happened next was inevitable, perhaps,
17:29given the circumstances,
17:30but it always requires a leap of faith to get up and follow Jesus.
17:36We can never know what was going through the heads of these people,
17:40as they moored up their boats that last time
17:42and followed Jesus back up the path from the beach.
17:46But we can learn from their blind and unquestioning faith.
17:51There is no record of any challenge of Jesus.
17:54But what are we going to do?
17:56Where are we going?
17:58How will we make money?
17:59When will we come back?
18:04For each and every one of us that is called,
18:06it is a one-way ticket.
18:08A journey that has no return.
18:11Just a destination with work to do along the way.
18:16Yes, we lose our worldly security.
18:18But we gain a heavenly assurance
18:20of a place of final rest and peace from our toil.
18:27Then we come to the account of the leper.
18:30And there is something immediately interesting about it.
18:34We know from the parallel accounts in Matthew and Mark
18:37that the town was Capernaum.
18:41But Luke the doctor is disdainful,
18:43for it was not right or even legal
18:46for a leper to have been in a town.
18:51Lepers were supposed to remain outside the town
18:54and not risked bringing their disease through the gates.
18:58This would suggest something of a slack governance of the town
19:02that had allowed this to happen
19:03in contravention of the law.
19:08In a way, it is also symbolic of human life.
19:10But we are also only too ready to accept as the norm
19:14things at which we should otherwise be appalled.
19:19Leprosy was seen in biblical times as retribution for sin.
19:23And so if lepers were allowed to freely come and go within a community,
19:28it implied something about the moral standards of those living there.
19:34Of course, Jesus was only too willing to heal the man.
19:39Note how the man approached Jesus with his face to the ground
19:42and begging him if he was willing to help him.
19:46We know that Jesus is always willing to help those who are humble
19:50and approach him in faith, as did this leper.
19:54He knew that Jesus could heal them.
19:56He was just uncertain as to whether or not Jesus would be bothered to do so.
20:02We should also note that Jesus gave him the very strictest of instructions
20:06to comply with the law.
20:08The man was to go and make offerings to the priest
20:11in order that he might be ritually pronounced clean.
20:16He was also told to keep his healing to himself.
20:20But the news of these things was bound to spread like wildfire.
20:26But why did Jesus want the leper to keep quiet?
20:30We might have supposed that Jesus would have wanted to heal all those who had wanted,
20:34and indeed we'd never read of him turning anyone away without doing something for them.
20:41Simply, Jesus had more things to do,
20:43and although he was happy to heal those whose paths he crossed,
20:46he was anxious not to be diverted from the teaching of his disciples.
20:52He knew he only had a short time to give them all the teaching he could.
20:57In this case, we read that although Jesus was followed by large crowds wherever he went,
21:02he was always looking for the quiet time
21:05to escape to the nearby mountains
21:07and find a spot to spend the night in prayer.
21:15Let us pray.
21:18O Lord, we beseech you,
21:20grant your people grace
21:21to withstand the temptations of the world,
21:24the flesh, and the devil,
21:27and with pure hearts and minds
21:29follow you, the only God,
21:32through Jesus Christ, our Lord.
21:35Amen.
21:40May the Lord bless us and keep us from all evil,
21:45bringing us to everlasting life.
21:48Amen.
21:49Amen.
