00:22Let us pray.
00:25Praise, honor, and glory be to you, O Christ, who, when standing before Pilate, kept silent at all the unjust
00:34accusations and slanders of the Jews, and as a gentle lamb that did not open its mouth, did not contradict
00:42them when they brought forward their charges against you.
00:46Give me grace never to be disturbed by the false accusations of others, but may I overcome every injury by
00:53silence and meekness.
00:55Give me the grace of perfect humility, so that I may never desire praise nor refuse any measure of contempt.
01:04Praise, honor, and glory be to you, O Christ, you, lamb without spot, against whom the pious Pharisees and scribes
01:14raged with obstinate hatred.
01:17For although Pilate testified that he found no cause of death in you, yet they would not be satisfied with
01:24anything except your death.
01:28Grant me grace to imitate your innocence and patience, that I may both lead a godly life, and for so
01:36doing, if I am spoken of evenly, that I may remain at rest in you, giving way to no indignation,
01:45but giving thanks to you in all adversity.
01:50Praise, honor, and glory be to you, O Christ, who will lead in the greatest of indignity, in the manner
01:59of a wicked criminal, through the middle of the city, from one judgment seat to another, and from Pilate to
02:06Herod and back again, amidst the noise and shouts of the people.
02:11Give me grace, nor to be exasperated by slander, nor to be exasperated by slander, may I never feel any
02:20false shame at being despised, but may I receive everything in meekness, and endure all things in silence for your
02:28honor, that, by the assistance of your grace, I may in patience possess my soul.
02:36Praise, honor, and glory be to you, O Christ, who, when Herod asked you many vain and foolish questions, and
02:44when you were falsely wounded in different ways by priest and scribe, humbly kept a meet and becoming silence.
02:53Give me grace to restrain my tongue in a manner well pleasing to you, do not permit me to utter
03:00hurtful words, do not permit me to be taken up with fruitless stories, but give me grace to say what
03:07is right, profitable, and honest, according to your will.
03:12May I behold the sin of evil speaking, and be always glad to think and speak well of any man.
03:23Praise, honor, and glory be to you, O Christ, who condemned by your silence the foolish curiosity of Herod, and
03:31who would not gratify his curious eyes by the performance of any miracle, because he did not have his own
03:39salvation at heart,
03:40and did there in this way teach us to avoid all ostentation before the great ones of this world, pour
03:50into my heart a spirit of deep humility, mortify and quench within me any desire for vain glory.
03:58Grant that I may never do anything in order to gain praise of man, but may always act with a
04:04single eye upon the glory of your most holy name, and may come before you day by day in a
04:11true spirit of humility and meekness.
04:17Praise, honor, and glory be to you, O Christ, who did not refuse to be set to nothing by Herod
04:24and his men of war, nor to be clothed in a white garment, and to be mocked and laughed at
04:29as though a fool and a madman.
04:32Give me grace, O Lord, to choose rather to be an outcast with you than to be glorious in the
04:38world.
04:39May I think it better and more honorable to suffer reproach for your name than to prosper in the vain
04:46honors of the world.
04:49Give me grace that, truly acknowledging my own sins and my own unworthiness, I may be as nothing in my
04:56own sight, but may always despise and accuse myself and daily lament over my own weakness and wretchedness.
05:06Praise, honor, and glory be to you, O Christ, who was sent back with shame, clothed in a false garment,
05:12from Herod the Pilate, and in all things obeyed your enemies going backwards and forwards according to their pleasure.
05:20Grant that I may not shrink from being despised, nor refuse obedience even to those who wish nothing but bad
05:29for me.
05:31Give me grace to have no feelings for the things of this world, but to think of and care for
05:37and love you alone.
05:39May you alone be my honor, my delight, my love, my glory, and my joy. Amen.
05:50O Lord, open our lips, and our mouths will sing your praise.
06:02O be joyful in the Lord, O be joyful in the Lord, O be joyful in the Lord, O be
06:10joyful in the Lord,
06:10serve the Lord with gladness, and come in all his presence with the song.
06:19Be sure that the Lord, he is God.
06:25O Lord, O be joyful in the Lord, and his life.
06:38God bless you.
06:48Be hopeful in the Lord, O be communal.
06:54Lord of his name, for the Lord is gracious, his mercy is everlasting, and his truth endures from generation to
07:14generation.
07:20Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost, as it was in the beginning,
07:36is now and ever shall be.
07:41World without end, Amen.
07:59World without end, Amen.
08:20And they have spoken against me with mortal scars.
08:30They compass me about the soul with words of hatred, and fought against me without a cause.
08:44For the love that I had unto them, no reason now I can't bear any past, but I give myself
09:01unto them.
09:03Lord of his name, Lord of his name, Lord of his name, Lord of his name.
09:32Lord of his name, Lord of his name, Lord of his name.
09:40Lord of his name, Lord of his name, Lord of his name, Lord of his name.
10:07Lord of his name, Lord of his name, Lord of his name, Lord of his name.
10:10Lord of his name, Lord of his name, Lord of his name.
10:26Lord of his name, Lord of his name, Lord of his name.

17:17A reading from the Gospel according to St. Luke, chapter 10.
17:24An expert in religious law stood up to test Jesus, saying,
17:29Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?
17:34Jesus said to him, What is written in the law? How do you understand it?
17:40The expert answered, Love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all
17:45your strength, and with all your mind, and love your neighbor as yourself.
17:52Jesus said to him, You have answered correctly. Do this, and you will live.
17:58But the expert, wanting to justify himself, said to Jesus, But who is my neighbor?
18:06Jesus replied, A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell into the hands of robbers, who stripped
18:14him, beat him up, and went off, leaving him half dead.
18:20Now by chance a priest was going down that road, but when he saw the injured man, he passed by
18:26on the other side.
18:28So too a Levite, when he came up to the place, and saw him, passed by on the other side.
18:35But the Samaritan, who was traveling, came to where the injured man was, and when he saw him, he felt
18:41compassion for him.
18:44He went up to him, and bandaged his wounds, pouring oil and wine on them.
18:50Then he put him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him.
18:56The next day he took out two silver coins, and gave them to the innkeeper, saying,
19:01Take care of him, and whatever else you spend, I will repay you when I come back this way.
19:07Which of these three do you think became a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of the
19:12robbers?
19:15The expert in the religious law said,
19:18The one who showed mercy to him.
19:21So Jesus said to him,
19:23Go and do the same.
19:29Now as they went on their way, Jesus entered a certain village, where there was a woman named Martha, who
19:34welcomed him as a guest.
19:37She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet, and listened to what she said, to what
19:42he said.
19:44Martha was distracted by all the preparations she had to make.
19:47So she came up to him, and said,
19:50Lord, don't you care that my sister has left me to do all the work alone?
19:54Tell her to go and help me.
19:57The Lord answered her,
19:59Martha, Martha,
20:01You are worried and troubled about many things,
20:04But one thing is needed.
20:07Mary has chosen the best part.
20:09It will not be taken away from her.
20:13This is the word of the Lord.
20:16Thanks be to God.
20:27The story of the Good Samaritan is well known to us all.
20:31The traveller,
20:32who was waylaid by brigands,
20:35and who is left for dead at the side of the road.
20:38The two upstanding officials who pass by and go out of their way to ignore what they see.
20:45The outcast,
20:46who is led by compassion to help,
20:48and who pays for the victim's recovery.
20:53The story came about as a result of Jesus being asked who our neighbour was.
20:58For the law requires that we love our neighbour.
21:02In this context,
21:03our neighbour is not the person who lives next door to us.
21:07But the people we meet as we go about our lives.
21:11The people we have dealings with,
21:13and those who appeal to us for help.
21:17The woman on the bus.
21:19The old man in the supermarket.
21:25As Christians,
21:26it is our obligation to treat people the way that Jesus would have.
21:30With kindness and compassion.
21:33Too often we can scoff at people,
21:35look down at people,
21:36and even feel revolted by people.
21:40This is completely wrong,
21:41and we have to learn to do the opposite.
21:44Everyone is our equal before God,
21:47and everyone is worthy of our love.
21:51If Jesus could love sinners and tax collectors,
21:54then why can't we?
21:57If we can learn this simple secret,
21:59then we will find ourselves loving our neighbour,
22:02as Jesus intended.
22:08From this familiar reading,
22:10I would like to pull some less familiar thoughts,
22:12and share them with you.
22:15First of all,
22:16we can read into this account
22:17that Jesus,
22:18even though he was king of kings,
22:20referred poverty to riches.
22:23He had no home of his own.
22:25He was entirely dependent upon the hospitality of his friends,
22:29one of whom was the Martha of this story.
22:34We can also presume from the language used in verse 38,
22:38that it was the house of Martha,
22:40and that she was probably a widow,
22:42with her sister living with her.
22:46Not surprisingly,
22:47Martha was annoyed that Mary was sitting,
22:50listening to what Jesus was saying,
22:52rather than helping with the preparations.
22:56To put this into context,
22:58consider that Jesus travelled with at least 12 other people,
23:02so a meal for 13 or more was to be prepared.
23:07That she threw herself into this wholeheartedly,
23:10is to be commended.
23:12But there is an important question for us,
23:15especially for those of us,
23:17who are engaged in working with Jesus.
23:21Is it possible,
23:23that sometimes we become so engrossed,
23:25in the work we are doing,
23:27for Jesus,
23:29that we run the risk of missing the point,
23:31of our ministry?
23:34Here,
23:35Martha was so wrapped up in preparing the meal,
23:38in being the perfect hostess,
23:39for her master,
23:40that she had forgotten the point.
23:44Yes,
23:45Jesus had come for something to eat,
23:46and perhaps a place to stay for the night.
23:49But he had also come to share the gospel with his friends.
23:54I'm quite sure,
23:55that he would not have minded waiting a while,
23:58to eat,
23:58or having a more simple meal.
24:01For he knew that Martha loved him.
24:03But what he really wanted,
24:05was for her to stop for a few minutes,
24:07and to absorb something,
24:08of what he was trying to explain.
24:14The last two verses of the passage,
24:16contain what must be the shortest sermon ever delivered.
24:20Even so,
24:21it is a sermon,
24:21whose teaching,
24:22goes far down,
24:23into the truth of our hope and faith.
24:26Let us trace it first,
24:28in the revelation made in Christ's word,
24:30of the differences,
24:31which the heavenly life comprehends.
24:34And secondly,
24:36in the council,
24:36with regard to this life,
24:37which Christ's word,
24:39conveys.
24:44How interesting is the sketch,
24:46of the two sisters,
24:47in the house of Bethany.
24:49They are so lifelike,
24:50that we feel,
24:51as though we had seen them,
24:52and known them.
24:54And indeed we have,
24:55because they portray,
24:56familiar types of character,
24:58and temper.
24:59No person of candour,
25:01will regard the elder sister,
25:02as the only embodiment,
25:04of worldly mindedness,
25:05in contrast with the younger,
25:07as the embodiment,
25:09of spiritual mindedness.
25:12When we look more closely,
25:13at the narrative,
25:14we see the injustice,
25:16of this view.
25:18It is Martha,
25:19who receives Jesus.
25:21It is she,
25:22who provides for his comfort.
25:25If she is bustling,
25:26and busy,
25:27this is only the sign,
25:28of her devotion.
25:30Nor does Jesus tell us,
25:32that in her anxiety,
25:34about many things,
25:35she had lost,
25:36the one thing needful,
25:37and that she had no share,
25:40in the good part,
25:41which could not be taken away.
25:44He is merely,
25:45defending Mary,
25:46against the temporary,
25:47petulance of Martha.
25:50And in doing so,
25:51he cautions her,
25:52against the temptations,
25:54incident to her activity.
25:59Jesus,
25:59Jesus said,
26:00said John,
26:01loved Martha,
26:02and her sister,
26:03and Lazarus.
26:05Assume then,
26:06that each of the two,
26:07had a place,
26:07in the communion of saints,
26:09and see what this place is,
26:11and how each is fulfilled,
26:13in the other.
26:16The usefulness,
26:17of the Martha character,
26:18is at once suggested.
26:21It hears the impression,
26:22of the liberal soul,
26:23who devises liberal things,
26:25who will take,
26:26any amount of pain,
26:27to oblige,
26:28who is eager to serve.
26:30Honor to those,
26:31who have the readiness,
26:32to do,
26:33and the lack of business.
26:35In such persons,
26:37there is generally,
26:38vast amount of self-denial.
26:40You will find them toiling,
26:41when there might be,
26:42any excuse for resting.
26:44Prompt,
26:45energetic,
26:46shrewd,
26:47they go straight on,
26:48their activity,
26:49being in a high state,
26:50of development.
26:54All honour,
26:55to the housekeepers.
26:56They enable,
26:57the quiet and thoughtful,
26:59to think and write.
27:01Erasmus,
27:02and Melanchthon,
27:03can study,
27:04while Luther,
27:06and Pharrell,
27:07are up and going.
27:08The Latons,
27:09can preach for eternity,
27:11because the Melvilles,
27:12and Hendersons,
27:12preach to the time.
27:15The Mary,
27:16could not sit,
27:17at Jesus' feet,
27:18unless the Marthas,
27:19were going about the house.
27:22But the Marys too,
27:23have their place.
27:25Busy people,
27:26are often apt,
27:27to underrate them.
27:29They exhibit something,
27:31of the elder sisters,
27:32impatience.
27:33We are left to do it all.
27:35These dreamers,
27:36do not help.
27:37Not help?
27:38It is Mary,
27:39who sees into the truth,
27:41of Jesus' sacrifice.
27:43It is she,
27:44who sitting,
27:44and listening,
27:45divines the joy,
27:46of the sorrow,
27:47which meet in the heart,
27:48of the Lord.
27:50By and by,
27:51when Martha makes a feast,
27:52she feels,
27:53that the hour has come,
27:55and she brings,
27:56the alabaster box of ointment,
27:57which she has been keeping,
27:59for that hour.
28:01Against the day,
28:02of my burying,
28:03says Christ,
28:04she has kept this box.
28:06This,
28:06that she has done,
28:07shall be spoken of,
28:08for a memorial offer.
28:12The prophetic spirit,
28:13belongs to the meditated.
28:16Martha is the worker,
28:18but Mary is the seer.
28:21So the conclusion,
28:22therefore,
28:23is,
28:23that the Marthas,
28:24and the Marys,
28:24abide together,
28:25in peace,
28:26and mutual self-respect.
28:28That the world of action,
28:29and the world of letters,
28:30recognise,
28:31each in the other,
28:32the balancing,
28:33completing path.
28:36God has created minds,
28:38male and female,
28:39the active,
28:39and the contemplative,
28:40the communicative,
28:41and the receptive,
28:43the objective,
28:43and the subjective.
28:45The church of Christ,
28:47the progress of humanity,
28:49demands both.
28:50If one is the guide,
28:52the other is the inspirer,
28:53of movement,
28:55and for permanent effect,
28:57as well as for the discovery,
28:59of truth.
29:00The Johns,
29:01outrun the Peters.
29:03Let each person,
29:04ascertain which of the two sides,
29:06is predominant in him,
29:08and seek the balance,
29:09supplied by the other.
29:12Whoever is Martha-like,
29:14should cultivate,
29:15the Mary of the Temple.
29:17Unless he sits,
29:18at Jesus' feet,
29:19he will not be come,
29:20but a better serving.
29:22It is not enough,
29:23to get it all right,
29:24for the Lord.
29:27The first thing,
29:28is to be right with,
29:29and in the Lord.
29:31Who so is Mary-like,
29:33should recollect,
29:35that gymnastic,
29:36is necessary for help.
29:39That he or she,
29:40must work,
29:40as well as enjoy,
29:43He or she,
29:43must not eat all the fat,
29:44and drink all the sweet.
29:46The sitting,
29:47at the feet of Jesus,
29:48must be with a view,
29:49to following,
29:50in the steps.
29:52The real moral strength,
29:54is found,
29:54where this balance,
29:55is found.
29:58So from Martha's,
29:59from the Martha's side,
30:00it was found,
30:01by St. Paul,
30:02who laboured,
30:03more abundantly,
30:04than all the apostles,
30:06yet all the while,
30:07sat,
30:08at Jesus' feet.
30:11From the Mary's side,
30:12it was found,
30:13by St. John,
30:14who,
30:15although the one,
30:15who leant on Jesus' chest,
30:17was the one,
30:18named Boaginies,
30:20son of thunder.
30:22To serve much,
30:23without being,
30:24cumbered about it,
30:26inquiring in the temple,
30:28to be the thinker,
30:29with the liberty,
30:30of the seat,
30:31at the master's feet,
30:32and yet the doer,
30:33of the word.
30:35This is the beautiful,
30:36proportion,
30:37of the heavenly life.
30:39This life is love,
30:40and love,
30:41must come first,
30:43as it did with Mary.
30:45But then,
30:45in the sweeter,
30:46and more wholesome spirit,
30:48it can work,
30:48as it did with mother.
30:52Consider now,
30:53the truth,
30:54of the heavenly life,
30:55which is indicated,
30:56in the counsel,
30:57given by Christ.
30:59It is a counsel,
31:00administered,
31:01under the twofold,
31:02form of caution,
31:03and commendation.
31:06The finger of caution,
31:07is pointed to Martha.
31:12Observe the antithesis,
31:13the many things,
31:14the one thing.
31:16This good,
31:17kind soul,
31:18is distracted,
31:19by a multitude of concerns.
31:22Who does not know,
31:23the worry which comes,
31:24through the pressure,
31:25of many trivialities.
31:27May it not be added,
31:28that there is nothing,
31:29which more wears out,
31:30the energy,
31:31than the attention,
31:32to the details,
31:33of home management.
31:36The whole sentence,
31:37of Jesus,
31:37is most expressive.
31:39First,
31:40the careful,
31:41or anxious.
31:42This is the inward fault.
31:43Then the troubled,
31:45which includes the external,
31:47and the restless,
31:48turning and bustling,
31:50hither and thither.
31:52Is it not eminently characteristic,
31:54of what we notice in others,
31:56and sometimes feel in ourselves?
31:58And note the mistake.
32:01It is not the serving,
32:03but it is being the comfort,
32:05or the bothered,
32:05about the serving.
32:07The serving,
32:08impeding the movement,
32:09heavenward,
32:10as a heavenly garment,
32:12impedes the one,
32:13who runs in a race.
32:16The many things,
32:17run away,
32:18with both the peace,
32:18and the strength,
32:19of the mind.
32:20We may not,
32:21absolutely forget,
32:23in the kind of way,
32:24we recollect.
32:26But we cannot,
32:26concentrate fully,
32:28our attention,
32:29on the one thing,
32:29which is needful.
32:33Martha,
32:33the feast,
32:34over which you are so exercised,
32:36is good in its way.
32:38The intention is kind.
32:40But this day,
32:41salvation has come,
32:42into your house.
32:44There is no,
32:45need of all these dishes.
32:48All this cooking,
32:49and preparation.
32:50But there is a need,
32:51of your acceptance,
32:53of the gift of God.
32:55If you knew that gift,
32:57and who it is,
32:57that speaks to you,
33:00you would feel,
33:01that the one thing,
33:01needful,
33:02is to ask the life,
33:03of him.
33:04To learn,
33:05what the life,
33:06is from him.
33:07To receive the gift,
33:08of the life eternal.
33:10Oh Martha,
33:11like souls,
33:12of every type and shade,
33:13why do you spend money,
33:14on that which is not bread,
33:16and your labour,
33:17on that which does not satisfy?
33:20The heart,
33:21hearkening for Christ,
33:22is the one thing,
33:22and you cannot have that,
33:24without an inward collection,
33:26and repose of spirit,
33:28without peace,
33:29and liberty,
33:29in God.
33:31Why be so greedy,
33:32of the unnecessary?
33:34Why pursue it,
33:36with such impetuous eagerness,
33:37that there are only,
33:38odd times,
33:39fragments of thought,
33:41or that which is needful,
33:43to the help of mind,
33:44to the wants,
33:45and desires,
33:46of an immortal nature?
33:51The finger of commendation,
33:53is pointed to Mary.
33:54She has chosen,
33:55that good part,
33:57which shall not be taken,
33:58from her.
34:00The good part,
34:01is a place,
34:01a nourishment,
34:02and a choice.
34:04A place,
34:05the feet of Jesus.
34:06That blessedness,
34:07of sitting there.
34:09When the Gadarenes,
34:10went out to see,
34:11what had been done,
34:12in their country,
34:13they saw the man,
34:14who had the devil's,
34:15long time.
34:16Devils now departed,
34:18sitting at the feet,
34:19of Jesus,
34:20clothed,
34:20and in his right mind.
34:23To find that place,
34:24is the sign,
34:25that the strong one,
34:26who binds with chains,
34:27and fetters,
34:28has been bound,
34:29by the stronger one,
34:30who has come,
34:31into the heart.
34:33The nourishment,
34:34she heard,
34:35his word.
34:36This is the meat,
34:38which endures,
34:39to life everlasting.
34:41The choice,
34:43she has chosen.
34:45Behold,
34:46the way of deliverance,
34:47from the Martha,
34:48carefulness and trouble.
34:50Choose your portion,
34:52have within you,
34:53as the centre of your life,
34:54a fixed,
34:55supreme determination.
34:57In this,
34:58there is force.
34:59It keeps a united heart,
35:01among the competitions,
35:03of the many things.
35:05The part is good,
35:06because it interprets,
35:07the voice of reason.
35:09It expresses,
35:10the wedding,
35:10of the actual life,
35:11of truth,
35:12to the truth,
35:12and calling of God.
35:15It is good,
35:16because it confers,
35:17a real spiritual,
35:19independence.
35:20So that a man,
35:21is not mastered by things,
35:23but can be the master,
35:24of things.
35:26It is good,
35:27because it can never,
35:28be taken away.
35:30Your banquets,
35:31last only for a short time.
35:33The most satisfying food,
35:35apart from God,
35:36must one day,
35:37fail and forsake you.
35:39Whatever is yours,
35:40will be taken away.
35:42This part alone,
35:43is you.
35:44It is you,
35:46hidden with Christ,
35:46Christ in God,
35:48hidden where death,
35:49can obtain no way in.
35:51He asked life of you,
35:53as you gave it to him,
35:54even length of days,
35:56forever and ever.
35:57You have made him,
35:59most blessed forever.
36:00You have made him,
36:01exceedingly glad,
36:03with your countenance.
36:05It is good,
36:06to sum up all,
36:08because it is not,
36:09as was the part with mother,
36:11a moving about,
36:12and a rent Christ,
36:14but a seeking,
36:15a laying hold of,
36:16and enjoying Christ himself.
36:23Let us pray.
36:26O almighty and most merciful God,
36:28of your bountiful goodness,
36:30keep us,
36:31we beseech you,
36:32from all things that may hurt us,
36:36that we,
36:37being ready both in body and soul,
36:39may cheerfully accomplish,
36:41the things that you would have us do.
36:44Through Jesus Christ,
36:46our Lord.
36:47Amen.
36:53May the Lord bless us,
36:55and keep us from all evil,
36:58bringing us to everlasting life.
37:01Amen.
