00:22Let us pray
00:26Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ
00:29Who, when your disciples and friends deserted and left you
00:33Remained alone in the hands of sinful men
00:36Like a most gentle lamb
00:38Within the jaws of a ravenous wolf
00:43Strengthen my excessive weakness
00:45And confirm my too great unstableness
00:47By the support of your grace
00:49And join me to yourself with the bonds of love
00:53That I may neither have no wish nor the power
00:56Ever to depart or separate myself from you
01:01Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ
01:04Who allowed yourself to be led around bound
01:07By an armed band and taken to Annas
01:12Allowing yourself to be stood before him
01:14As though you were a common criminal or robber
01:19O unspeakable gentleness of my Redeemer
01:22Look, while they take and drag and thrust you forward
01:27You uttered not a single word of complaint
01:30Or murmur or word of resistance
01:33But in silence you followed them wherever they led you
01:37Obeying their commands
01:39And permitted their wanton injuries to you
01:44Grant, O Lord, that these your virtues may shine in me
01:47To the everlasting glory of your name
01:51Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ
01:54King of heaven and earth
01:55Who in great humility
01:57As poor and needy and of no account
02:00Was stood before the proud High Priest
02:03And most sweetly endured the dreadful blow
02:07Which his impious servant put upon you
02:12Restrain, I beg you
02:13In me all outbreak of anger and passion
02:17Suppress all acts of indignation
02:20And quench within me all desire of revenge
02:24That when I am provoked by injury
02:27I may not be disturbed
02:28I may offer no resistance
02:31May suffer no disquiet
02:34But endure everything with a quiet mind
02:36May I even repay evil with good
02:41Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ
02:43Who permitted himself to be led bound
02:46In a shameful manner to Caiaphas
02:48That you might deliver us from the penalty
02:51Of eternal death
02:52Restoring to us true liberty
02:56Make me most ready
02:58To endure every reproach
02:59And all contempt for your name's sake
03:03Grant that in the very middle
03:05Of ridicule and outrage
03:06I may give you thanks with a perfect heart
03:09And by means of these trials
03:11May grow and increase more and more
03:14In your love
03:18Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ
03:20Who, when three times denied
03:23By your Apostle Peter
03:26Mercifully turned and looked upon him
03:28With kindness
03:29And brought him to repentance
03:31And holy sorrow for his sin
03:33In like manner
03:34May you turn upon me also
03:37Your eye of mercy and love
03:39That I may weep over my past sins
03:42With the tears of true penitence
03:44And may never again commit them
03:47May I never be found sinning
03:49Against your goodness
03:50In word or deed
03:54Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ
03:56Who stood before the elders
03:58And the people of the Jews
03:59With a calm countenance
04:00And humble look
04:02Who did not refuse to be falsely accused
04:05And to suffer many injuries
04:09Give me grace never to say an untrue word
04:11Or to falsely accuse my neighbour
04:14But that I may bear with all quietness of heart
04:17The calumnies that are heaped upon me
04:21Casting all my troubles upon you
04:23May I always, in silence
04:25Look for the grave and consolation
04:28At your hands
04:32Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ
04:35Who, when Caiaphas the High Priest
04:38Adjured you by the name of God
04:41Declared the truth
04:42And proclaimed yourself the Son of God
04:44And did not refuse to be counted by him
04:47And the rest who stood by as a blasphemer
04:50May I fully abhor this contempt
04:53And defence against you
04:54May I, in every place
04:57Reverence the presence of your divinity and majesty
05:03May I think of you
05:04Adore, praise and love you
05:07Above all things
05:08Forever and forever
05:11Amen
05:15O Lord, open our lips
05:17And our mouths shall sing your praise
05:27O be joyful in the Lord
05:31O be joyful in the Lord
05:32O be glad
05:33Turn the Lord with gladness
05:37And come in all his prayers
05:40And bring us on
05:43Be sure that the Lord
05:47He is God
05:49He is he that shall fail us
05:53And not be ourselves
05:55We are his people
05:58And the sheep of his pasture
06:02O be joyful in the Lord
06:04Who do your way
06:05To his peace
06:06With thanks
06:07And into this
06:11God
06:12With praise
06:13Be thankful
06:15For the Lord
06:16For the Lord is gracious
06:25His mercy is everlasting
06:44Glory be to the Lord
06:48Glory be to the Father
06:49And to the Son
06:52And to the Holy Spirit
06:56And to the Holy Spirit
06:57As it was in the beginning
06:59Is now and ever shall be
07:05World without end
07:09Amen
07:13Amen
07:15Amen
07:23Amen
07:25Amen
07:27Amen
07:27Amen
07:27Amen
07:27Thank you
07:29Amen
07:31Amen
07:33Amen
07:34Come to Thee, O Lord, will I sing?
07:43Lord, let me now understand thee in the way of holiness.
07:55When there's an honor to me, I will walk in my arms in a perfect heart.
08:10I will take the wind and be in hand, I pray to sleep for my faithfulness.
08:23There shall no such thing unto thee, O proud of God, shall ye come from thee?
08:39I will not know the wicked person, Who so brave in his honor and his favor,
08:55In will I destroy.
09:03O so brave, O so brave, O so brave, O and my son.
09:13O so brave, O so brave, O so brave, O so brave, Yes, may be troubled.
09:35O, so heareth the God divine, deep shall be my servant.
09:50There shall no deceitful person dwell in my house.
09:58He that steadeth life shall not stand me in my sight.
10:10I shall soon destroy only a glory that I lead the Lamb.
10:20That I will lose the glory of the Lord from the city of the Lord.
10:40O, so heareth the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.
10:55O, so heareth the Father, and to the Son, and to the Son, and to the Son.
11:28O, so heareth the Father, and to the Son, and to the Son, and to the Son, and to the
11:29Son.
11:31A reading from the Gospel according to Saint Luke, chapter 9.
11:39Now when the days drew near for him to be taken up, Jesus set out resolutely to go to Jerusalem.
11:47He sent messengers on ahead of him, and as they went along, they entered a Samaritan village
11:53to make things ready in advance for him.
11:56But the villagers refused to welcome him, because he was determined to go to Jerusalem.
12:05Now when his disciples James and John saw this, they said,
12:10Lord, do you want us to call fire to come down from heaven and consume them?
12:16But Jesus rebuked them, and they went on to another village.
12:22As they were walking along the road, someone said to him,
12:25I will follow you wherever you go.
12:29Jesus said to him, Foxes have dens, and the birds in the sky have nests,
12:36but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.
12:41Jesus said to another, Follow me.
12:45But he replied, Lord, let me first go and bury my father.
12:52But Jesus said to him, Let the dead bury their own dead,
12:56but as for you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God.
13:03And yet another said, I will follow you, Lord,
13:07but first let me say goodbye to my family.
13:11Jesus said to him, No one who puts his hand to the plough
13:16and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.
13:22This is the word of the Lord.
13:25Thanks be to God.
13:33We have in today's Gospel reading some of the more memorable incidents
13:37of our Lord's last journey to Jerusalem.
13:44Very solemnly and very sweetly does St. Luke introduce the reference to his passion.
13:59It mitigates the bitterness of his Lord's sufferings and death,
14:04looking on, as it thus does, to the issue and the end,
14:09to the taking up of Christ into heaven,
14:12to his reception in his heavenly home,
14:15and into his Father's glory.
14:22We begin with an insult.
14:25He sent messengers before his face as harbingers
14:30to see that word in its most proper sense.
14:33And they went and entered into a village of the Samaritans
14:38to make ready for him.
14:40And they did not receive him
14:43because his face was as though he would go to Jerusalem.
14:49This refusal of theirs was no piece of ordinary inhospitality,
14:55such as Samaritans were wont to show to Galilean pilgrims
14:58on their way to the feasts at Jerusalem.
15:03It was not merely as such a pilgrim
15:06that they shut their doors against him.
15:08For this is what we must remember
15:13was Christ's solemn progress from Galilee to Judea
15:17as Messiah.
15:19With these messengers everywhere
15:21announcing him as such.
15:25But as the Samaritans considered it,
15:28a Messiah going to Jerusalem to observe the feasts there
15:31did by his very act proclaim that he was no Messiah.
15:37For on Gerizim they believed
15:40the patriarchs of old had worshipped,
15:44consecrating it to be the holy mountain of God,
15:47which therefore and not Jerusalem,
15:50the Christ when he came,
15:52would recognise and honour
15:54as the central point of all true religion.
16:01The sons of Zebedee were probably with the Lord
16:03when the tidings were brought back from the village,
16:06which, refusing to receive him,
16:10had missed the opportunity of entertaining
16:12not merely angels,
16:14but the Lord of angels himself
16:17and always.
16:20Upon this provocation,
16:22all their suppressed and smouldering indignation
16:25against the schismatics
16:27through whose territory they were journeying
16:30broke out.
16:32At this insistence
16:35of contempt
16:36shown to their Lord
16:38and to themselves
16:39for no doubt a feeling of personal slight
16:42mingled with their indignation,
16:45however little they may have been aware of it themselves.
16:49The sons of thunder
16:50would play Old Testament parts.
16:54They feel that a greater man than Elias is here,
16:58for they are fresh from the mount of the transfiguration,
17:02where they had seen the glory of Moses and Elias
17:05paled before the brighter glory of him
17:07whom they served this day.
17:11An outrage against him
17:13and a rejection of him
17:15should therefore not be less terribly avenged.
17:20With all of carnal and sinful
17:23which mingled with this proposal of theirs,
17:26yet what insight into the dignity of the Lord
17:29and the greatness of the outrage
17:31directed against him,
17:33it reveals the faith
17:35in the mighty powers
17:37which he was able to equip his servants.
17:40And yet it might almost seem as though
17:43with all this confidence of theirs,
17:45there was a latent and lurking sense
17:47upon their part
17:49of a certain unfitness
17:51in this their proposal.
17:54and thus out of no desire
17:57to intrude into their Lord's office,
17:59but only out of a feeling
18:01that this avenging act
18:02might not only become him,
18:05they proffer themselves
18:07as the executor of this judgment.
18:11it would become the servants,
18:14though it might not perfectly become the Lord.
18:18Jesus turned and rebuked the disciples,
18:23saying,
18:24you do not know
18:25what manner of spirit
18:26you are of.
18:29You are missing,
18:30Christ would say,
18:31your true position,
18:32which is,
18:33having been born
18:34of the spirit of forgiving love,
18:36to be ruled by that spirit,
18:38and not by the spirit
18:40of avenging righteousness.
18:42You are losing sight
18:44of the distinction
18:45between the old covenant
18:46and the new,
18:47missing the greater glory
18:49of the latter,
18:50and that it is the higher blessedness
18:53to belong to it.
18:57It is necessary for us
18:58to see clearly
18:59that there is no slight cast
19:01here of the spirit of Elias.
19:04Both spirits,
19:06that which are breed
19:07through and informed
19:08of the prophets and saints
19:10of the old covenant,
19:11as well as that
19:12which should inform
19:13the disciples of the new,
19:16are all divine.
19:20The difference between them
19:21is not one of opposition,
19:22but one of time and degree.
19:25The spirits of the Old Testament
19:27were spirits
19:28of avenging righteousness.
19:30God was teaching men
19:32his holiness
19:32by terrible things
19:34in righteousness.
19:38But within the new covenant,
19:39not contrary,
19:42but brighter,
19:42is that of forgiving love.
19:46In it,
19:47he is overcoming
19:48man's evil
19:49with his good.
19:51Each economy
19:52has one
19:53predominating tone
19:55from which
19:56it takes its character.
19:59the two apostles
20:00were,
20:00for the moment,
20:01failing to recognise this.
20:04In a confusion
20:05of old and new,
20:06and not knowing
20:07of what manner
20:08of spirit
20:09they were,
20:10they had fallen back
20:11on the rudiments
20:12of God's education
20:13of his people
20:14when it was their privilege
20:15to go on
20:17into perfection
20:18and to teach
20:19the world
20:20the far greater might
20:22of meekness,
20:23humility
20:24and love.
20:28In their missing
20:29of all this
20:29there was a fault
20:30and matter of blame
20:31and yet the blame
20:33by no means
20:34so severe
20:34as some are inclined
20:35to find.
20:37They were rebuked
20:38for choosing
20:39that which,
20:40whilst perfectly good
20:41in its own time,
20:43was only
20:44not good now
20:45because a better
20:46had come
20:47for returning
20:48to the lower level
20:49of the old covenant
20:50when Christ
20:52had lifted them up,
20:53if only they had
20:55understood this,
20:56to the higher level
20:57of the new.
21:01The manifold wisdom
21:03of Christ
21:03which displayed itself
21:05in his drawing
21:06and attaching
21:06of souls to himself
21:08by ways
21:09the most different,
21:10most often
21:11fell us
21:12with devout
21:13admiration.
21:16Perhaps it may
21:17never fill us
21:18more than
21:19with this
21:21instance
21:21when there are
21:22brought before us
21:23in quick succession
21:24moral and spiritual
21:26conditions
21:27with much
21:28apparent similarity
21:30which yet
21:31are most diversely
21:32treated by him
21:33such as we have
21:35in today's reading.
21:37There were here
21:38three who
21:39either in their
21:40own interpretation
21:41or in the Lord's
21:42are candidates
21:44for admission
21:44into the inner
21:46circle of disciples
21:49that is
21:50into the circle
21:52not
21:53of those
21:54who would
21:55receive the truth
21:56merely
21:57but as Christ's
21:58actual witnesses
21:59who should be
22:01actively employed
22:02in imparting
22:03the knowledge
22:04of what that truth
22:05had to others.
22:11there came a scribe
22:13and his words
22:14sounded fairly
22:14Master
22:16I will follow
22:17thee
22:17wherever you
22:18go
22:21they remind
22:22us a little
22:22of the great
22:23hearted words
22:24of Ittai
22:25to David
22:27Surely in what
22:28place my Lord
22:29the King
22:29shall be
22:30whether in
22:31life or death
22:32even there
22:33also will
22:34your servant
22:34be
22:36to Samuel
22:3715 21
22:39Nor is there
22:41any reason
22:41to suppose
22:42that this
22:42hope
22:44hopeful
22:44of discipleship
22:46and to which
22:47all discipleship
22:48might involve
22:49meant
22:49at the time
22:51otherwise
22:51than he spoke
22:53and yet
22:54there is not
22:56in him
22:56that true
22:57devotion to
22:58Christ
22:59which would
23:00otherwise lead
23:00him to follow
23:01that Lord
23:02in this world
23:04that is in the
23:05world to come
23:07he shall be
23:08free to follow
23:09him wherever
23:10he goes
23:11Revelation
23:1214 4
23:15These words
23:16have more
23:17in them
23:17of Peter's
23:18confident
23:18assertion
23:20Lord I am
23:21ready to go
23:21with thee
23:22both into
23:23prison
23:23and to
23:23death
23:24chapter 22
23:26verse 33
23:28At all events
23:29they inspire
23:31him who
23:31knowing all
23:32things knew
23:32what was in
23:33man
23:33and no
23:35greater
23:35confidence
23:36than those
23:36other words
23:37of Peter
23:38hereafter
23:38should do
23:39for not
23:40welcoming
23:41the volunteer
23:41but rather
23:42repelling
23:44for he
23:45answered
23:45the foxes
23:47have holes
23:47and the birds
23:48of the air
23:49have nests
23:50but the
23:51son of man
23:51has nowhere
23:52to lay
23:53his head
23:55in other
23:56words
23:56you look
23:57for worldly
23:58commodities
23:58through the
23:59following of
24:00me
24:01in this
24:02you will be
24:03disappointed
24:05these
24:05my followers
24:07cannot have
24:08since they
24:08are not
24:09mine
24:11the son of
24:12man is both
24:12homeless and
24:13houseless
24:13upon this
24:14earth
24:16nor does
24:17this answer
24:18of Christ
24:18come out
24:19to us
24:19in all
24:20its depths
24:20of meaning
24:21until we
24:22realise
24:23that hour
24:23when upon
24:24the cross
24:25he bowed
24:25his head
24:26not having
24:27where to lay
24:28it
24:28and having
24:29bowed it
24:30gave up
24:31the ghost
24:33whether
24:34this scribe
24:35withdrew
24:35and went
24:36away
24:36we are not
24:37told
24:39that we
24:40did
24:40withdraw
24:40is certainly
24:41the impression
24:42left upon
24:42our minds
24:44but whatever
24:45was the
24:45outcome
24:46the reply
24:47of Christ
24:47was not
24:48meant merely
24:49and only
24:49to repel
24:52it was
24:52intended
24:53rather to
24:53throw back
24:54this candidate
24:54for the
24:55honours of
24:55discipleship
24:56on a deeper
24:57heart searching
24:59and that having
25:00made these
25:01he might either
25:02fall off
25:02altogether
25:03or else
25:04he might
25:05attach himself
25:05more securely
25:07to the law
25:07in quite a
25:09different spirit
25:09from that in
25:10which he
25:11made the
25:12offer we
25:12read of
25:13today
25:16having
25:16checked
25:17one
25:17our
25:17lord
25:18incited
25:18another
25:20for he
25:20knew there
25:21was more
25:21truth in
25:22the
25:23backwardness
25:23of him
25:24to whom
25:25he addresses
25:25himself
25:26now
25:26than in
25:27the
25:27forwardness
25:28of the
25:29previous
25:29man
25:31he has
25:32for him
25:33that
25:33significant
25:34follow
25:34me
25:36which he
25:37had also
25:37had for
25:38Philip
25:39a Matthew
25:40an Andrew
25:41or a Peter
25:44it is in
25:45answer to
25:45such a
25:45summons that
25:46this one
25:46replied
25:47lord permit
25:48me first
25:49to go and
25:49bury my
25:50father
25:52this may
25:53mean
25:53my father
25:54lies dead
25:56suffer me
25:56before I
25:57attach myself
25:58to you
25:59to render
26:00last offices
26:00of pity
26:01to him
26:03and Christ's
26:05answer we
26:05may interpret
26:06as implying
26:07the spiritually
26:08dead
26:09those who
26:10are not
26:10quickened
26:11as you
26:12have been
26:13with the
26:13spirit of
26:13a new
26:14life
26:14are yet
26:15sufficient
26:16for the
26:16fulfilling
26:16of this
26:17office
26:17which would
26:18now call
26:19you away
26:19from me
26:21namely
26:21the burying
26:22of the
26:23naturally
26:23dead
26:25they can
26:26perform it
26:27as well
26:27as you
26:27and under
26:28the present
26:29circumstances
26:29you should
26:30be contented
26:31to leave
26:31it to
26:32them
26:36where
26:36duties
26:36come into
26:37conflict
26:37sacred
26:38duties
26:39such as
26:40that which
26:40this man
26:40pleaded
26:41must give
26:42way to
26:42those
26:43more
26:43sacred
26:43yet
26:46Christ
26:47had said
26:47to this
26:48man
26:48follow
26:49me
26:50so that
26:51now the
26:51old saying
26:52held good
26:54whoso
26:55loveth
26:55father or
26:56mother more
26:56than me
26:57is not
26:58worthy
26:58of me
27:02and then
27:02Christ
27:03justified
27:03his
27:04withdrawal
27:04of the
27:04man
27:05from
27:05attendance
27:06on the
27:06dead
27:08he
27:08had a
27:09fitness
27:09for work
27:10which
27:10if not
27:11directly
27:12with the
27:12living
27:12was as
27:13yet
27:14with those
27:14who were
27:15capable
27:15of being
27:15made
27:16alive
27:18go
27:18and preach
27:19the kingdom
27:20of god
27:21as though
27:22he had
27:23said
27:24yours
27:24is another
27:25task
27:25namely
27:26to spread
27:27far and
27:27wide
27:27the glad
27:28tidings
27:28of life
27:30which
27:30as many
27:31as shall
27:32hear
27:32shall live
27:33one of
27:34my royal
27:35priesthood
27:35a nazirite
27:37of mine
27:37having fellowship
27:38with me
27:38whom
27:39am the
27:40life
27:42thy occupation
27:43is henceforth
27:45with the living
27:45and not
27:46with the
27:47dead
27:51a third
27:52man
27:53offered
27:53himself
27:54for
27:54discipleship
27:55and
27:56yet
27:56this
27:57with
27:57conditions
27:57and
27:58craving
27:59time
27:59for
27:59farewells
28:00which
28:01he
28:01would
28:01prefer
28:01to say
28:02first
28:05he
28:05he
28:06too
28:06would
28:06learn
28:06that
28:07there
28:07was
28:07no
28:07dallying
28:08with
28:08a heavenly
28:08vocation
28:09but then
28:10when this
28:11has reached
28:11a man
28:12there is
28:12no room
28:13left
28:13in him
28:14for conferring
28:15with flesh
28:16and blood
28:17as to
28:18the king's
28:19daughter
28:19of old
28:20the word
28:21of that
28:21precept
28:22has come
28:23forget also
28:24your own
28:25people
28:25and your
28:26father's
28:26house
28:27psalm
28:2845
28:2910
28:30while
28:31as it
28:32may only
28:32too easily
28:33prove
28:33his worst
28:35foes
28:37those
28:38who will
28:39most effectively
28:39keep him
28:40back from
28:41god
28:41may be
28:42those of
28:42his own
28:43household
28:48the lord
28:49therefore
28:49will give
28:50no allowance
28:50to his
28:51request
28:51shutting
28:52down
28:52once
28:53and for
28:53all
28:54dangerous
28:55delays
28:56and interludes
28:57between the
28:57offer of
28:57service
28:58and the
28:59actual
28:59undertaking
29:00of it
29:01he who
29:02holds the
29:03plough
29:03must never
29:04look behind
29:04him
29:05for if
29:06he does
29:06he spoils
29:07the furrow
29:07and mars
29:08the work
29:09which he
29:09has
29:10undertaken
29:13the
29:13discipleship
29:14of christ
29:14is such
29:15a putting
29:15of the
29:16hands
29:16to the
29:16plough
29:18for it
29:19is the
29:19breaking
29:19up of
29:20the hard
29:20soil
29:20in our
29:21hearts
29:22for the
29:22breaking
29:23up of
29:23the hard
29:24soil
29:24in the
29:24hearts
29:25of others
29:27this
29:28image
29:28gives us
29:29the laboriousness
29:30of the
29:30work
29:31better than
29:32the more
29:32usual image
29:33of sowing
29:34and so
29:35to speak
29:36carries us
29:37a step
29:37further back
29:38in the
29:38spiritual
29:39husbandry
29:41but he
29:42who having
29:43put his
29:44hand to
29:44the
29:44plough
29:45began
29:46well
29:46shall
29:47afterwards
29:50christ
29:51does not
29:51say
29:52turn
29:53back
29:53but even
29:54so much
29:55as
29:55look
29:56back
29:58in token
29:59that his
29:59heart is
30:00other way
30:01than in
30:02the task
30:03in front
30:04he may
30:05still have
30:05his hand
30:06on the
30:06plough
30:06but having
30:07fallen away
30:08in hearts
30:09and affection
30:09from his
30:10work
30:10he will
30:12trace
30:12no
30:12straight
30:13furrow
30:13he breaks
30:15not
30:15aright
30:16any
30:17fallow
30:17ground
30:17he is
30:18not fit
30:19or rather
30:19is of no
30:20service
30:21and profit
30:21for the
30:22kingdom
30:23of god
30:26god
30:27indeed
30:27unless kept
30:27to his
30:28work as
30:29a
30:29hireling
30:29servant
30:30it is
30:31likely that
30:31he will
30:32presently
30:32leave the
30:33plough
30:33in the
30:33half-drawn
30:34furrow
30:35and be
30:36found to have
30:36exchange
30:37toil and
30:37exposure
30:38abroad
30:39for the
30:40comforts
30:40and ease
30:41of his
30:42own
30:42hearth
30:43and home
30:43once more
30:49let us
30:50pray
30:52oh almighty
30:53and most
30:54merciful god
30:55of your
30:56bountiful
30:56goodness
30:57keep us
30:58we beseech
30:58you
30:59from all
31:00things that
31:00may hurt
31:01us
31:01that we
31:03being ready
31:04both in
31:04body and
31:05soul
31:05may cheerfully
31:07accomplish
31:07the things
31:09that you
31:09would have
31:09us do
31:11through
31:11Jesus Christ
31:12our Lord
31:13Amen
31:20May the
31:20Lord bless
31:21us and
31:22keep us
31:22from all
31:23evil
31:23bringing us
31:25to everlasting
31:26life
31:28Amen
31:31Amen
