00:22Let us pray.
00:50Let us pray.
00:54And through your mercy be introduced as an adopted son into the heavenly inheritance.
01:31Let us pray.
02:10Let us pray.
02:15Let us pray.
02:18Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ, who, when bowed down by the weight of your
02:23cross, at length reached the place of punishment, where, quite exhausted, they offered you wine
02:31mingled with gold.
02:34May you extinguish in me all gluttonous and carnal desire, giving me grace never to consent
02:41to any impure or unlawful pleasure.
02:45But may I take my food in moderation to the glory of your name, and may hunger and thirst
02:50after you alone, and find no pleasure or gladness except in you.
02:58Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ, who was stripped before the gaze of all people
03:03on Mount Calvary, and the soreness of your wounds being increased by the removal of your clothing.
03:11You did not refuse to undergo, for my sake, the most dreadful pain.
03:17Grant that I may love the spirit of poverty, and never be disturbed by want or scarcity.
03:24Give me grace to bear patiently any difficulties or troubles in this life, for the glory of
03:30your name.
03:31Strip my heart of every vain fancy and affection, and grant me a holy intent with pious desires,
03:40renewing within me daily a most pure love for yourself.
03:45Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ, who gave himself up to be extended naked upon
03:52the wood of the cross, and the joints of your most holy limbs to be wrenched apart, most cruelly
03:59nailed and fastened thereto.
04:02Then, for my sake, you suffered your most delicate hands and feet to be most deeply wounded.
04:10Grant, O Lord, that I might remember, with a faithful and grateful heart, this your unspeakable
04:18charity, when you did of your own accord stretch out your hands to be bored, and your feet to
04:24be pierced through.
04:26O Lord, enlarge and extend my heart by a perfect love of you.
04:31Pierce it and fix it to yourself with the nail of your sweetest love, and shut up within yourself
04:38alone, all my senses, all my thoughts, and all my affections.
04:43Amen.
04:47O Lord, open our lips, and our mouths shall sing your praise.
04:59O be joyful in the Lord, holy land, serve the Lord with gladness, and come before his
05:12prayers and triggers on.
05:16Be sure that the Lord, he is God.
05:22O Lord, it is he that has made us and lost me ourselves.
05:28We are his people and the sheep of his pasture.
05:34We are his people and the sheep of his pasture.
05:46We are his people.
05:49and speak to the Lord of his name.
05:55For the Lord is gracious, his mercy is everlasting,
06:05and his truth endureth from generation to generation.
06:17Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost,
06:29as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be,
06:38world without him. Amen.
06:47Amen.
07:23Amen.
07:27Amen.
07:54Amen.
07:58Amen.
08:26Amen.
08:29Amen.
08:52Amen.
08:56Amen.
09:25Amen.
09:33Amen.
09:56Amen.
09:58Amen.
10:04Amen.
10:08Amen.
10:09Amen.
10:13Amen.
10:45CHOIR SINGS
10:59CHOIR SINGS
11:17As it was in the beginning, it's now and never shall be, but without end. Amen.
11:43A reading from the Gospel according to Saint Luke, chapter 8.
11:50They arrived in the country of the Gadarene, which is opposite Galilee.
11:55When Jesus stepped ashore, a certain man out of that city, who had had demons for a long time, met
12:01him.
12:02He wore no clothes and didn't live in a house, but in the tombs.
12:06When he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell down before him and with a loud voice said,
12:12What do I have to do with you, Jesus, you son of the most high God?
12:16I beg you, do not torment me.
12:19For Jesus was commanding the unclean spirit to come out of the man.
12:24For the unclean spirit had often seized the man.
12:28He was kept under guard and burned with chains and fetters.
12:32Breaking the bonds apart, he was driven by the demon into the desert.
12:38Jesus asked him, what is your name?
12:42He said, legion.
12:44For many demons had entered into him.
12:48They begged him that he would not command them to go into the abyss.
12:54Now there was a herd of many pigs feeding on the mountain.
12:57And they begged him that he would allow them to enter into those.
13:00And he allowed them.
13:01And the demons came out of the man that entered into the pigs.
13:05And the herd rushed down the deep, the steep bank into the lake and were drowned.
13:12When those who fed them saw what had happened, they fled.
13:15And told the people in the city and in the country.
13:18And the people went out to see what had happened.
13:22They came to Jesus and found the man from whom the demons had gone out.
13:26Sitting at Jesus' feet.
13:29Clothed and in his right mind.
13:30And they were very afraid.
13:32Those who saw it told them how he had been possessed by demons, but was healed.
13:39All the people of the surrounding country of the gathering had asked him to depart from them.
13:43For they were very much afraid.
13:47He entered into the boat and returned.
13:50But the man from whom the demons had gone out begged him that he might go with them.
13:54But Jesus sent him away saying, return to your house and declare what great things God has done for you.
14:02He went on his way, proclaiming throughout the whole city what great things Jesus had done for you.
14:11When Jesus returned, the multitude welcomed him, for they were all waiting for him.
14:17Behold, there was a man called Jairus, and he was the ruler of the synagogue.
14:21And he fell down at Jesus' feet and begged him to come into his house.
14:25For he had an only daughter of 12 years of age, who was dying.
14:32But as he went, the multitude pressed against him.
14:37A woman who had had a flow of blood for 12 years, who had spent all her life living on
14:44physicians and could not be healed by any,
14:49came behind him and touched the fringe of his cloak, and immediately the flow of her blood stopped.
14:56Jesus turned and asked, who touched me?
15:00When all denied it, Peter and those with him said,
15:04Master, the multitude presses and jostles you, and you say, who touched me?
15:11But Jesus said, someone did touch me, for I perceived that power has gone from me.
15:19When the woman saw that she was not hidden, she came trembling and fell down before him,
15:24and declared to him in the presence of all the people the reason why she had touched him,
15:28and how she was healed immediately.
15:33He said to her, daughter, cheer up, your faith has made you well, go in peace.
15:42While he was still speaking, one from the ruler of the synagogue's house came, saying to him,
15:47your daughter is already dead, don't trouble the teacher.
15:51But Jesus, hearing it, answered, don't be afraid, only believe, and she will be healed.
15:59When he came to the house, he did not allow anyone to enter in except Peter, John, James,
16:05and the father and mother of the child.
16:09All were weeping and mourning her, but he said, don't weep, she is not dead, but sleeping.
16:16And they ridiculed him, knowing that she was dead.
16:20But he sent them all outside, and taking her by the hand, he called to saying,
16:26child, arise.
16:29Her spirit returned, and she rose up immediately.
16:32He commanded that something be given to her, to eat.
16:37Her parents were amazed, but he commanded them to tell no one what had been done.
16:44This is the word of the Lord.
16:47Thanks be to God.
16:57Two miserable creatures are mentioned in Matthew, in the land of the gathering.
17:04No sooner has Jesus come forth on the land, than they rush toward him.
17:10Human, yet without the mental attributes of humanity,
17:13shunned by all, left in a lonely place, to red the air with fearful cries,
17:19to clash themselves against stone, wretched beyond the name of wretchedness.
17:28One of the two is singled out by Luke, and described,
17:32and observed the effect of Jesus' presence.
17:36Instantly some long silent call was touched,
17:39some new sense of the awful misery into which the man had been plunged was awakened.
17:44Some conflict between the mind made suddenly active,
17:47and the nameless power of darkness was originated.
17:52The maniac fell down, and with a loud voice cried out,
17:56as if the other one were crying through him.
17:59What do I have to do with you, Jesus, son of the most high God?
18:03I beg you, do not torment me.
18:09What a wonderful confession,
18:11which, however, had been preceded by a word of authority,
18:15and which is followed by a kind of confused perception.
18:21What is your name?
18:23What name had he?
18:25What personality?
18:27The only word which seemed to describe the situation
18:30was the Roman name for a host.
18:33My name is Legion, for we are many.
18:38Poor Legion,
18:39for there is in you a groaning which cannot be uttered,
18:42and that groaning unaware to yourself
18:44as the form of the old prayer.
18:47Unite my heart to fear your men.
18:52Lo, he who knows the mind of the Spirit has heard you,
18:55and he has given a new song to your mouth.
18:58Henceforth you will say,
18:59I will praise you, O Lord my God, with all my heart,
19:02and I will glorify your name forevermore.
19:05For great is your mercy to me,
19:08and you have delivered my soul from the lowest hell.
19:13Thus far, although wonderful,
19:16it's beautiful and Christlike.
19:20But now comes the strange portion of the narrative.
19:23Jesus is described as giving the demons
19:26which had laid waste the son of Abraham
19:28leave to possess the herd of swine
19:30feeding on the mountainside.
19:33The consequence of which
19:34was that the herd ran violently
19:36down the steep slope into the sea
19:38and would drown.
19:42Against this destruction,
19:44many objections have been brought.
19:47It is a stumbling stone for many,
19:50a defence even to believers.
19:54Even in faith,
19:55it seems it varies
19:56with the merciful nature of our Lord
19:58and the transfer of evil power
20:00from the man into the herd of swine.
20:03Bristles with things
20:05that are hard for us to understand.
20:08Explanations are offered,
20:10some of them ingenious,
20:11but all are unsatisfactory.
20:13I'm not going to be dwelt on today.
20:16It is assumed that we take the evangelist
20:19to be a trustworthy guide
20:20as to the events
20:21which are out of the plane
20:23of ordinary life.
20:26Somehow, somewhere,
20:27the work done is reconcilable
20:30with the true nature of things,
20:32with the mercy and the truth
20:33which are all around God's paths.
20:36Let us observe two points.
20:42To the possessed man himself,
20:44there was given a testimony
20:46never to be forgotten
20:47of the sin and the misery
20:48from which the stronger
20:50than the strong one
20:51had delivered him.
20:53The effect on the character,
20:55the influence of which
20:56some action or course of conduct
20:58would have in the establishment
20:59of trust in himself
21:01or the education of the disciple,
21:04was always in the mind of Christ.
21:08Now, what an evidence
21:09in a form of which
21:11one's shattered intellect
21:12was not yet fully restored
21:14could understand
21:15was given of the awful waste
21:17of spiritual life,
21:18the awful force of untrained,
21:20unsanctified nature
21:21by the sight of that rush
21:23into the sea.
21:25Recollect, too,
21:26that according to the correspondence
21:28of Scripture,
21:29these swine represent
21:31the more bestial
21:32and corrupt propensities
21:34of our nature.
21:38Pascal,
21:39in one of his most cynical sayings,
21:41refers to man as
21:42half-beast, half-devil.
21:45There is something
21:46of the beast in men,
21:47and that what happened
21:49that day
21:49is the token
21:50of what does happen
21:51when the lower animal
21:53is acted on
21:53by the spirits
21:55of malignity
21:56and darkness,
21:58when, from some cause
21:59operating from without,
22:00that which is animal
22:02is acted upon
22:03by which
22:03that which is devilish.
22:06Is it not that same
22:07violent rushing
22:08down the steep place
22:09of poor animalized beings
22:11that truly have checked
22:13and destroyed,
22:14witnessed every day?
22:17Do we not constantly
22:18see infatuations
22:20similar to that portrayed
22:21in the herd of swine?
22:26In England,
22:27more than 120,000
22:29die every year,
22:30as a result
22:31of strong dreaming.
22:33If,
22:34has been asked,
22:36there is such a destruction
22:37of cattle
22:37or swine
22:38in the country,
22:39what attention
22:40would be called to it?
22:42What a host
22:43of remedies
22:44and measures
22:44with a view
22:45to its prevention
22:46would be propounded?
22:48that no one
22:49takes any notice.
22:53Undoubtedly,
22:53the event
22:54in Gadirina
22:55is a sign
22:56of what mere
22:57carnal appetite,
22:58when fed by some
22:59exciting cause,
23:01brings effect.
23:02And being so,
23:04it is a standing witness
23:05for the blessings
23:06of his selfish,
23:07whose gospel
23:08is a new order
23:09as well as a new life,
23:10who controls
23:11what is lawless
23:12by the law of liberty,
23:13and under whose feet
23:15the man from whom
23:16doubles are departed
23:17sits clothed
23:18and in his right mind.
23:24To all of us
23:25there is a sad
23:25significance
23:26in the behaviour
23:27of the people
23:29of Gadirina.
23:33The two facts
23:34before them were
23:35the swine lost
23:36and the man gained.
23:38Which of the two
23:39was the greater?
23:40The swine lost.
23:43That spoke to them
23:44of a fearful power
23:45in the man
23:45who had landed
23:46on their shore.
23:48Perhaps their
23:49consciences
23:49were uneasy.
23:51If they were Jews
23:52and some of them
23:53must have been,
23:54they knew that
23:55for the purpose
23:56of gain
23:56they had broken
23:57Moses in law.
24:00Why should he
24:01continue in their midst
24:02whose glance
24:03burnt like an oven?
24:05Anyway,
24:06instead of remembering
24:07what attracted
24:08and spoke of healing
24:09and the cure of man,
24:10they remember only
24:11what had caused them
24:12loss and the destruction
24:13of the swine.
24:14Away they cried,
24:16you,
24:17holy and terrible one,
24:18we don't wish
24:19to be disturbed
24:19in our way,
24:20trouble us no longer.
24:24What a fearful prayer.
24:27But do not more
24:28than the Gadarenes
24:29pray it.
24:30Are there many
24:31not here today
24:33whose secret heart
24:35protests,
24:35let us alone,
24:37O Lord God,
24:38let us make money
24:39as best we can,
24:40eat, drink
24:41and be merry,
24:42away with the spiritual,
24:44away with church,
24:45away with God,
24:46give us our swine
24:47and let heaven go.
24:50Fearful prayer
24:51and fearful answer.
24:55God answers,
24:56sharp and sudden
24:57on some prayers
24:58and flings the things
25:00that we have asked
25:01for in our face,
25:02a gauntlet
25:03with a gift in it.
25:05He entered into the boat
25:07and returned.
25:10There is only one
25:11of another spirit
25:12in the multitude,
25:13he who for a few
25:14months before
25:15had cried,
25:16What have I to do
25:17with you?
25:18Now beseech
25:19is like Ruth the bold.
25:21Entreat me not
25:22to leave you.
25:23Where you go,
25:24I will go,
25:25and where you dwell,
25:26I will dwell.
25:28No,
25:29he must remain
25:31Christ's missionary
25:32and witness
25:33to his unbelieving
25:34countrymen.
25:36Not to luxuriate
25:38in him,
25:38but to live
25:39and work for him
25:40is the call
25:41of the redeemed.
25:44And he went his way
25:45publishing throughout
25:47the whole city
25:47the great things
25:48that Jesus
25:49had done for him.
25:55Let us pray.
25:58O God,
25:59forasmuch as
26:01without you
26:01we are not able
26:03to please you,
26:04mercifully grant
26:06that your Holy Spirit
26:07may in all things
26:09direct and rule
26:10our hearts.
26:12Through Jesus Christ
26:13our Lord.
26:14Amen.
26:20May the Lord bless us
26:22and keep us
26:23from all evil
26:24bringing us
26:25to everlasting life.
26:28Amen.
