00:00Listen, man, I don't want to sugarcoat it.
00:02I understand how a lot of people in this city are feeling.
00:05I understand that yesterday's loss feels like far more than a single game.
00:13But I can't stress enough.
00:15All right, Jeff.
00:17Jeff's emotional.
00:18Clary's emotional.
00:19Like, I understand the emotions of this and what we saw
00:24and how we move forward.
00:26But, Brian, I got to stress.
00:28It was just a preseason game.
00:30The Caps lost to the Bruins in the preseason opener,
00:33but it was just a preseason game, man.
00:36The Caps are going to be fine.
00:38Most people are cursing you out right now.
00:39You know that, right?
00:41Most people are cursing you out right now.
00:43Because, to be honest with you, not many people give a damn about that today.
00:49I know.
00:50It's just like, listen, man.
00:51Obviously, what we saw yesterday in Dallas.
00:53That is where everything is and people are concerned
00:56and things of that nature.
00:57And, you know, we all have our feelings and our opinions.
01:01And I don't know.
01:04I just, as tough as it is, I'm still in the mindset you're looking for solutions
01:11instead of just giving up hope.
01:13You get what I'm saying?
01:14Yeah.
01:14And I think most people, they just give up hope immediately as soon as that happened.
01:20You know, the blame want to be placed here, want to be placed there.
01:23I'm sure we'll go through this all day and take calls about who's to blame, this, that, and the other.
01:28I don't think there's no one person to blame.
01:30There's a lot of people to blame.
01:31We look in the secondary.
01:33Mike can get blamed.
01:34But, hell, ain't nobody covering.
01:35He's part of the problem.
01:36Doesn't seem like a linebacker knows how to get in front of a damn tight end.
01:42Especially the red zone.
01:43You know, nobody asked Chris to step on Jaden's foot.
01:47Why did he have a brace or not have a brace on?
01:50That's a question to be asked, too.
01:51I would think moving forward, you would try to find a way.
01:54Pat Mahone, what's the material?
01:57Magnesium.
01:58Magnesium?
01:59Well, maybe we need a magnesium brace because it'll be lighter.
02:02It won't be, but it's strong.
02:04It'll be light.
02:05It won't be bulky.
02:06So, it's a lot of things to be figured out.
02:08But, hell, still, you can win games even if you don't have some people.
02:13Yeah, I mean, running through yesterday's chain of events, I guess, it was just, you know,
02:21Dallas came out offensively and could do whatever they wanted.
02:24They could do whatever they wanted.
02:25And I know people are going to call in and be mad at Dan Quinn for going for it with
02:31three seconds left at the one-yard line.
02:32We can have that discussion.
02:33I understand that.
02:34But, like, offensively, Dallas got anything they wanted, okay?
02:43And it was, like, everybody all offseason was screaming about the offensive line,
02:48and my biggest concern was the secondary.
02:50And you see that game and how it goes yesterday.
02:53I mean, Dak, the first drive got everything he wanted.
02:58C.D. Lamb got everything he wanted.
03:00They go right down the field, put up seven.
03:02Then they go right down the field again.
03:04Washington held them to three, but it was in the red zone.
03:07I mean, the yardage totals, it's all pretty damn obvious kind of what Dallas was able to do.
03:15But then Jaden starts playing.
03:18Now, they go three and out on the first drive, but after that, you had a 13-play, 82-yard
03:22drive for a field goal,
03:24an eight-play, 59-yard drive for a touchdown.
03:27And Washington was making this thing a game.
03:29And we saw some of this last week in the loss to Philly,
03:34but we really saw it Sunday in Dallas where the evolution of Jaden Daniels,
03:42where yesterday in the first half, Dallas had zero gap integrity in their pass rush.
03:48Like, the lanes they were creating for Jaden to run were just there,
03:52and the corners were running, and Jaden was taking advantage of all of it.
03:56And more importantly than that, he was playing super smart, sliding, getting out of bounds,
04:02taking the yardage that's there, not trying to make too much happen,
04:05and just taking what was presented to him, dialed in with his arm,
04:09and then you get to that last play.
04:13They decide to go for it.
04:15Chris Paul steps on his foot.
04:16He's knocked off balance.
04:17He leans down to brace himself to stay alive so that the play can continue
04:21because he obviously want to get points there.
04:24And you see his elbow pop out.
04:26The replay is gruesome, and it's the same replay we saw against Seattle.
04:32Like, it's a disturbing play to watch when somebody's arm bends in like that.
04:38And he leaves the field, obviously.
04:42Everybody knows in the moment that there's a real injury based on him,
04:46the way he went down and then went down again,
04:48and then the player standing over with him.
04:50The emotional toll that takes on that locker room in the 10 minutes they have
04:55to gather themselves at halftime.
04:58I saw Jaden leaving the stadium, leaving the locker room, arm in a sling,
05:03going to meet up with his family before I assume he gets on the bus to travel back
05:07with the team.
05:08Yeah, Dan said he was going to travel back.
05:11They said x-rays are negative.
05:12It was a dislocation.
05:14There will be MRIs today.
05:15No fractures so far.
05:17Yeah.
05:17None of us are doctors.
05:18We don't know.
05:19Nobody is.
05:20And the thing of it, like, and I know it's totally different.
05:25Like, my sister's shoulder used to pop out.
05:29And after like one or two times, the comeback was quicker.
05:35You get what I'm saying?
05:35Yeah.
05:36Then the first time, first two times.
05:38But then she got to the point where she'll be sitting here and say,
05:40watch this clip.
05:41Drop it out of the face.
05:42Slap it back in.
05:43But I think if you're going to be playing,
05:46and if that's the way you brace yourself and it happened twice,
05:50that some level of protection has to be put on and on.
05:54Yeah.
05:55I mean, there is a natural question if he has to get surgery, right?
05:59Like, if you have something that keeps getting injured,
06:02you surgically have to repair it.
06:03I don't know that answer.
06:04I don't know what the timeline is.
06:06It's also like, if it healed and then it's hurt again,
06:10does surgery even help?
06:11I don't know.
06:12If there were no fractures, no ligament damage,
06:17then you're asking the question, okay, is surgery required?
06:20But when you get surgery normally for something of that nature,
06:24it's because it just pops out, not when a force makes it happen.
06:28You get what I'm saying?
06:28And both times, it's freaky, but you go to brace yourself,
06:34and when you go to brace yourself, put your hand back,
06:36depending on how that hand hits, it's where that force goes.
06:40So, but the thing, I'm just saying moving forward,
06:43I would think the people working with him,
06:47the people that own this team and people around
06:49would want to have some level of protection on it.
06:51Sure.
06:52Because that other arm is the moneymaker.
06:55Yeah.
06:56I mean, he's the non-throwing hand.
06:57He balls.
06:57And this is a nine-one,
06:58but you don't want that non-throwing arm to keep being the reason
07:01you're not on the field.
07:03Like, let's imagine a fictional narrative
07:07where Jaden plays the whole game.
07:09The way that secondary was playing,
07:11I don't think they're winning anyway.
07:13I think maybe it's 37-34 because Jaden was able to move the ball.
07:16Like, from a football perspective, week one,
07:21you're able to generate pressure.
07:23You still give up some explosive plays,
07:24but the pressure kind of carries you through it.
07:27Week two, the pressure really wasn't there,
07:29and the secondary's just getting torched.
07:31Yeah.
07:32Dak had five incompletions,
07:33and they took their foot off the gas in the second half.
07:35Dak, in rhythm, you got problems with him.
07:3926-31 for 280 and four touchdowns.
07:43CeeDee Lamb had eight catches for 153 yards.
07:45I know all that,
07:46but this is pro football in this day and age,
07:48but if you're going to bring pressure,
07:51you have to play tighter.
07:52You know what I mean?
07:53I'm looking at them bringing five and six and seven,
07:56and they're four or five yards off,
07:58and all they need is three or four yards
07:59to get the first down.
08:01If I'm, I'm not a genius,
08:04but if I know that I'm running pressure,
08:07and I let you a free release off the line of scrimmage,
08:09it's going to be hard as hell for me to stop the person.
08:11But if I get in your face,
08:13and at least make you gather a little bit,
08:15you throw the timing of the playoff.
08:17I saw Dak in most moments throw the ball in rhythm,
08:21which is a problem for a defense.
08:26We're going to open the phones.
08:27They're already full.
08:29Shocker.
08:30800-636-1067.
08:32800-636-1067.
08:35There's an M. Schlesinger on the line.
08:37I went to high school with a girl named Meredith Schlesinger.
08:39I wonder if it's her.
08:41I think she's married to this dude, Colin Finan,
08:43that I went to high school with, too.
08:46Brian, it is just before halftime.
08:50You have three seconds left.
08:53You're in a position where you need touchdowns, in my mind.
08:57I would not have been mad if Dan Quinn had kicked there.
09:00I would not have called him a wimp or a coward or anything.
09:02I understand taking the points because you're getting the ball coming out of halftime.
09:07At that point, the score, I believe they were down 17-10.
09:14I believe it was 17-10 just before half.
09:19They decide to go for it.
09:21Yeah, it's 17-10 just before half.
09:23They decide to go for it.
09:25It is third down from the one-yard line with three seconds left.
09:36And Jaden gets hurt.
09:39Third and one from the one, three seconds left on the clock.
09:41Jaden gets hurt.
09:43He's under center, which some people take issue with,
09:46even though we spent all offseason screaming that he needs to be under center more.
09:49That's the way to create play action and separation for the receivers.
09:52Jaden's under center, takes a snap.
09:55Chris Paul, the left guard.
09:56Chris Paul's right foot lands on Jaden's left foot.
09:59He's off balance, starts to fall down,
10:02uses his left arm to brace himself to try to continue the play.
10:05You see the arm pops inward.
10:08What call would Brian Mitchell have made in that moment?
10:11You kicking or you going?
10:13I'm just like you.
10:14I had no problem with him going for it.
10:16But also, I'm thinking the same way you're thinking.
10:18But see, I'm not a person.
10:20You've been around me long enough.
10:21I don't judge everything after the fact.
10:24And everybody that's now losing their damn mind,
10:27if they had made this, gotten it played,
10:30nobody's saying the damn thing.
10:31So I was okay with him going for it.
10:33If he had kicked it, I'd have been okay with that as well.
10:35Yeah, I could go either way.
10:36So my thing is, I'm not going to get up here now and say,
10:39well, I would have damn sure just went for it.
10:41No, I understand what he was trying to do.
10:44And I also saw, like you said, you just put a whole narrative on it,
10:47how the defense wasn't stopping them.
10:49So you're trying to get as many points as you can,
10:52especially when you're on the road.
10:53That's like the Saints last week, losing the game to Detroit.
10:57At home, you probably take the extra point and you go into overtime.
11:01But when you're on the road, you have to try to take them when you can.
11:05And they tried to get the two points, they didn't get it.
11:07But you live to play another day.
11:08You keep moving.
11:10I, Jaden getting hurt, hurting the elbow again.
11:16I mean, they went for it.
11:18He got hurt.
11:19If you want to bury the coach for that, I can understand it, I guess.
11:25I just, I have a hard time.
11:27I'm, I'm not mad that he was under center.
11:30Like, if he had, listen, Jay, if he was in this game running 15 call
11:36quarterback runs and got hurt, I understand.
11:41How that happened, I'm not pissed at nobody for it.
11:45I'm just disappointed that the kid didn't have a chance to continue.
11:48And I'm disappointed for him because, like you stated earlier,
11:51he works his ass off to get back.
11:53And I see people trying to make a comparison with Rob.
11:56Robert was trying to make sure he does what he wanted to do,
12:00no matter what a coach said to anybody else.
12:02That's not what Jaden is.
12:04So I'm not going to sit up here and accept the, just like Robert stuff.
12:07That's BS on my book.
12:09I think trying to make any direct comparison to RG3 is silly.
12:14They're different players, different quarterback.
12:16Like, everything is just different, right?
12:18But damn, if there's not, I was texting with somebody last night that knows things.
12:23And they were just like, it's remarkable that this organization,
12:28every time they think they have an answer at quarterback,
12:32injuries are just devastating.
12:34And Robert, Alex Smith, Jaden.
12:38You go back to Joe Theismann.
12:40I'll take you back to Doug in the Super Bowl and get hurt in the offseason.
12:45You know, it's a lot of stuff.
12:48I mean, just, it's, it's just crazy to think about.
12:52Yeah.
12:52Now, I feel like there's this emotional response,
12:56and I'm not saying people shouldn't have an emotional response.
12:59What, what happened on that field yesterday was gut-wrenching.
13:02I mean, to a man in the locker room, the answers, when I asked players,
13:07I asked Rashad White, who goes all the way back to Arizona State with Jaden,
13:10right?
13:11Hey man, what was it like seeing him go down?
13:12He said, I'm sick.
13:13I cried.
13:14That's my brother.
13:15Like, there's an obvious emotional response here,
13:18and I think a big part of it is knowing how hard Jaden worked last year
13:24to overcome all of these injuries,
13:26to now be back in the same situation with the same injury.
13:30I almost think it's worse that it's the elbow again,
13:33and he didn't turn his ankle or, you know, hurt his finger or something.
13:39Like, it's like, you just wonder, like, what the hell is up with this elbow?
13:43How snake bit is this elbow?
13:44Can you ever overcome this?
13:46And maybe that's why you talk about a brace.
13:48Maybe that's why you talk about surgery.
13:49I don't know.
13:50But the brace, I think, is most important, probably most important.
13:53Surgery or not, if you get surgery, you don't get surgery,
13:55you're going to need some type of protection.
13:57And that's the thing I look at.
13:58But I think what Rashad White is telling you is where I go normally when players
14:04get injured.
14:05There's a human side of them getting injured, too.
14:07It's not just for us in the media or people as fans to immediately dismiss the
14:15person, get rid of them.
14:16That's the mindset most people have.
14:18And that pisses me off because guys bust their ass to be out there to be putting
14:23themselves in harm's way for fans and for media people.
14:27And when they get hurt, you just want to dismiss them.
14:30I'm appalled by that.
14:31That really pisses me off.
14:33I get, listen, I know what guys go through.
14:36I've been there.
14:38And when I just see people just immediately dismiss folks and don't understand what
14:44they go through, I can't.
14:46And when a player just might not sign an autograph, when you want an autograph
14:50signed, and when he's probably eating with his kids, you get pissed off at that,
14:53then why should he respect you if you don't respect him?
14:58I get to that point.
15:01Hey, help me understand, what, I don't, you're mad that people are dismissive of
15:06Jaden, like what he's put into it?
15:08No, people immediately, the first thing is like, doom, gloom, it's over, get rid of
15:13them, let's go somewhere else.
15:15That's what we've been doing.
15:16We've been just getting rid of people and moving on to the next one.
15:19Because that's all, society is only about what the hell is the most negative, most
15:24asinine thing you can think about and do.
15:26That's where I'm at.
15:27Okay, that's totally fair.
15:29I think, like, everybody, we live in a microwave society, right?
15:33And everybody wants to press fast forward on the fifth year option or the contract negotiations
15:39this offseason.
15:40Like, we don't have to have that discussion right now.
15:43It's possible.
15:44I think it seems most likely to me, Brian, that Jaden's going to have an IR stint here.
15:50I could be wrong.
15:51Maybe he misses a game.
15:55Maybe it's two games.
15:56Maybe he's back in practice on Wednesday.
15:58I find that hard to believe.
15:59But, like, we don't know what's going to happen.
16:01I think the level of play Jaden has shown is such that you certainly don't give up on
16:08him.
16:09Considering what you've invested in the young man already in the number two overall pick,
16:13like, any conversation of you've got to move on is just stupid because it's week two.
16:19Like, it's week two.
16:20That part of it, for me, that makes this so difficult, you're 0-2 for the first time since
16:252019.
16:26You've got a defense that you had some excitement for coming out of week one, and then Dallas
16:30just did whatever they wanted.
16:31I think some of these defensive questions from last year have extended into this year.
16:35I think you have a serious, serious roster construction discussion.
16:40Like, go back to the 2024 draft.
16:42You had three second-round picks you're getting nothing from.
16:45That, like, that had nothing to do with Jaden's elbow.
16:49Three second-round picks, we're three years into this.
16:52It's one thing when you're six games into a rookie season or ten games in, like, you want
16:56to give grace in time.
16:58Three second-round picks you're getting nothing from.
17:01Newton's hurt.
17:02Senate, I think, had one catch yesterday.
17:04And Sammer still, the problems are well-documented.
17:06And to suggest that it's all Mikey is naive, but he's certainly a part of the problem.
17:12Undoubtedly.
17:12I agree with that.
17:13And, like, the overall football problems are significant.
17:18And I think if we only allow ourselves to have the Jaden conversation, which you need
17:23to have, but to suggest that it's time to move forward now, for what?
17:28The draft's eight months away.
17:30The agency's not nine, ten.
17:32That's what it's about, Jay.
17:33What are we talking about?
17:34Because that's what most talk is about.
17:37Hey, I'm not blind to everything that I see and hear.
17:40I understand the different mindset, but I just don't, I don't compromise, can't compromise.
17:46But that's where people go.
17:48You know why?
17:48It's about clicks.
17:49And most people, it's about clicks.
17:52And it's stupid because, for me, they still have guys on this team that are pros.
17:58They still have guys that can go out there and perform and play, and you can win some games.
18:03Seen it happen too many times.
18:05And I start thinking about people that I've seen get hurt early in their career, come back
18:09and have a stellar one, Santana Moss.
18:12We're watching Daniel Jones, he has changed himself.
18:15He just got injured again last year.
18:17And look how he's playing already this year.
18:19I look forward to that.
18:20I'd rather try to give hope on that instead of just being like everybody else and just
18:25say, oh, it's over, let's move on.
