00:03Ireland's Data Protection Commission has fined Google 403 million euros for its unlawful processing of location data.
00:10Acting on behalf of the EU, the Data Protection Watchdog had launched an inquiry into the tech giant in 2020,
00:17following complaints from several European consumer rights organisations.
00:21As a result of Google's failures, individuals could have been unaware that their location was being used to,
00:27for example, influence them with ads or to infer their interests and could lose control over their personal data.
00:34Deputy Commissioner Graham Doyle was quoted in an official press release.
00:38The inquiry examined Google's processing of location data in three features,
00:43namely web and app activity, location history and location accuracy, between 2018 and 2020.
00:50The DPC found Google had breached the GDPR, the EU's Data Protection Rules,
00:55and in addition to the fine, ordered the U.S. tech company to comply with the law within six months.
01:00In response, Google said it significantly evolved its practices and launched tools to, quote,
01:06make managing location data simple.
