00:27And obviously, we've had a lot of talk as it surrounds Deshaun Watson, his performance
00:34going back to Sunday.
00:36And yes, surprise, but not overreaction, I think is the proper way to kind of put this
00:42into context.
00:43There's more that comes out of this, though.
00:45We're going to have to have conversations on Todd Munkin.
00:47I know while we were in the station buzz there, we listened to a little bit of the reaction
00:53from, you know, his postgame comments and his reaction to Mike Tomlin.
00:58We're going to get into that later.
01:01But I think the big picture, I think there's a lot to not overreact to.
01:06I think there's a lot of things that actually went really well, like the defense, the protection
01:10up front.
01:10I think there's so many things that we're going to be able to positively hit on, but
01:16I think there's also so many things that people want to take as an overreaction.
01:20This is part of the fun of the first two weeks of the NFL season is that people overreact
01:25after week one, then re-overreact over week two.
01:29And you have to find kind of where the team is in the middle, but you're hyperbolic when
01:33it comes to the first two games of the season.
01:34In a lot of ways, that's just the way that this ends up playing out, but I think that's
01:39where a lot of Browns fans are also probably sitting right now.
01:43Without any further ado, though, let's go out and talk to our Cleveland sports beat reporter.

01:53Daryl, how are we doing on this Tuesday?
01:55We're doing well since we've avoided the apocalypse.
02:00It kind of felt like one was coming over the weekend, did it not?
02:02Daryl kind of felt like they were laying it up for a apocalypse overthrow in, well, I
02:08don't know if the booing would have continued, but it wouldn't have been to Sean on the field
02:11to get it.
02:12The booing will continue until morale improves, but yeah, no, they, they thankfully were able
02:18to get their act together and they come home one-on-one and everyone's feeling a lot better
02:22about things.
02:24Daryl, walking away from that game and the way that it went on Sunday, obviously in respect
02:28to Deshaun, but kind of in respect to everything.
02:30We had concerns about the defense and the run game persisted, uh, protection up front,
02:35everything.
02:36Uh, it felt like most of that just flipped on its head in a way that I don't know that
02:40almost anybody was expecting.
02:42Yeah.
02:43I mean, look, Deshaun was better, right?
02:45He was efficient.
02:46He took what the defense gave him.
02:48His teammates made plays for him this week.
02:51The offensive line did a real good job, especially those two rookies, Austin Barber and Spencer for
02:56no.
02:57And then, you know, you look on the defensive side of the ball, they went to back to a little
03:01more, uh, zone or man-to-man coverage instead of zone.
03:05Although Miles Harden's interception came off his own coverage, but, um, you know, Mike
03:10Rutenberg said it's a player's league and it's his job to put his players in a position to
03:14be successful.
03:15And I feel like the coaching staff did that.
03:17They didn't ask Deshaun to do too much.
03:19He didn't try to do too much, took care of the football.
03:22And Hey, what do you know?
03:22Maybe this football stuff isn't as hard as the Browns always want to try and make it out
03:26to be certainly felt that way.
03:28I mean, on the flip side, Daryl, cause I feel like there's a lot of hyperbolic reaction.
03:33It's week two of the NFL when isn't there, but there's a lot of people, you know, doom
03:37and gloom after week one and a lot more positive this week.
03:41How much of that game do you also go back to and kind of look at Brown's played well,
03:45especially in that fourth quarter?
03:46Uh, the Buccaneers also just didn't play so hot.
03:50No, I mean, the Buccaneers didn't play well, but I, let's give the Browns the credit, right?
03:54I think the Browns had a lot to do with that, especially with the pressure they were getting
03:59on Baker.
04:00He was not comfortable.
04:01They were forcing him to, to move on, uh, you know, with regularity.
04:06Uh, he was amped up because this was supposed to be his revenge game, even though he had already
04:11lost to the Browns back in a couple of years ago, that, uh, season opener in Carolina.
04:15But he was amped up for it.
04:18He was sailing footballs over his wide receiver's head with regularity.
04:22And, and so, um, you know, give, you know, I think that it's more about giving the Browns
04:27credit for how they played rather than, uh, dogging on the Buccaneers for not getting it
04:33done down the stretch and keep in mind, even when, you know, the football gods put everything
04:40on hold for a minute there for two hours in the, you know, it's a two minute warning, right?
04:46Tampa Bay only needed 28 yards.
04:48They had the ball at the 28 yard line.
04:50Okay.
04:51So they were sitting pretty.
04:53It's not like their drive, you know, they were starting coming out, you know, backed up
04:56at their inside their 20 or at the, you know, 30, their own 30 or whatever.
05:01And they had a lot of field to go.
05:02They just needed 28 yards to score a touchdown.
05:05And the Browns defense was able to hold them off at the end.
05:08So again, give the Browns the credit for, uh, holding them off, uh, you know, coming
05:15out and there was the sideline report, which I found to be very fascinating.
05:19I forget who the sideline reporter was, but listening to the Browns locker room versus
05:24listening to the Buccaneers locker room, the Browns locker room, they were throwing a party
05:28in there while the heavens opened.
05:30And then at Tampa Bay's locker room was, you know, they were all at church.
05:35It was quiet.
05:36So, um, you know, Tampa Bay clearly, uh, was, was feeling the heat, uh, about the prospect
05:42of losing a game to the Browns, which they ended up doing.
05:45But yeah, I mean, get, get the Browns the credit for winning that football game more so
05:48than saying Tampa Bay just didn't show up.
05:51Darrell.
05:52How weird was that weather delay?
05:53I don't know.
05:54Obviously we've seen it happen, but two hours at the two minute warning, I was just such
05:59an odd time for it to, to happen.
06:01It looks like they made the right call.
06:03Cause it was, uh, it was quite the weather, uh, during that delay.
06:06Well, we've had that here.
06:07Um, we actually had it a couple of years ago during a preseason game, um, where, well, we
06:14actually had it during the preseason this year, but no, we, we, we had it, uh, um, and it,
06:20it was a ferocious storm that came through, uh, but it was also before, uh, kickoff.
06:27Uh, they didn't get the, you know, the game didn't actually get underway.
06:31We've had that happen here, but it's part of the reason they try and schedule those 1
06:34PM kickoffs down in Florida, because.
06:37You know, this is the time of year where they get that type of weather.
06:40And again, Daryl Ryder with us here on the hotline, uh, Daryl, I Todd's comments after
06:45the game, obviously in response to Mike Tomlin, uh, he did not hold.
06:50It was kind of the part that bothered me, Daryl, is it's what I wanted earlier in the
06:56week when he was asked about it.
06:57Uh, I think back on Monday is what I wanted to hear the reaction.
07:01I still love to hear it, but why are we getting the weight?
07:05No, no, no.
07:05Here's why, because they won.
07:07Okay.
07:08It's a, it sounds really stupid when you do it.
07:10And if they, uh, you know, would have gone on to lose.
07:13Right.
07:14So I think Todd Munkin did that perfectly.
07:17I got to give him his props as, as Mike drops go for a head coach and a press conference
07:23that's up there.
07:25That was pretty good.
07:26Now it, now the phrase is the Browns is the Browns.
07:30Okay.
07:31Uh, this is authored by Pittsburgh Steelers.
07:33They don't speak proper English down there in the Yinser land.
07:37Okay.
07:38It's, it's not the Browns are the Browns that's proper English.
07:41They speak Yinser and that's why they said, Juju Smith-Schuster said Browns is the Browns.
07:47Okay.
07:47So, uh, but nevertheless, I absolutely love that from Mike Tomlin as far, or I should say
07:54from, uh, uh, from Todd Munkin as a walk-off in response to Mike Tomlin.
08:00And then, you know what?
08:01I love Mike Tomlin's response on Sunday night football.
08:03It's like, Hey, I'm sitting in this chair.
08:05I ain't got to worry about bulletin board material anymore.
08:09I have no consequences for the things I say.
08:11And I, I love that too.
08:13And he's absolutely right.
08:15Darrell with those comments, as well as a, obviously just the team turning things around.
08:20How much goodwill do you think Todd Munkin bought with the fan base that even after one
08:24week of football was starting to, to maybe look a little bit shaky.
08:27Yeah, I think he bought some goodwill.
08:29No question about that.
08:31Um, there's no denying it.
08:33Uh, I think that that gets the, the fans off his back a little bit.
08:37Um, and, and understandably so, right?
08:40I mean, the frustration's understandable and all that, but yeah, I, I think, I think
08:44he bought himself some goodwill.
08:46I think Deshaun Watson ultimately ended up maybe not buying himself goodwill, but from
08:51an organizational standpoint, because let's not forget, okay.
08:54Everything we heard from Todd Munkin leading up to that game about how much faith they have
08:59in Deshaun and belief, this, that, and the other.
09:01And then you turn around and you, you, you, you wake up Sunday morning and there's the
09:05reports out there.
09:06Well, you know, Hey, if things don't go so well for Deshaun Watson today, the Browns might
09:10have to reevaluate their quarterback situation.
09:12Right?
09:14So that was all hot air that we got, uh, from Todd.
09:17Okay.
09:18So, uh, I think that from an organizational standpoint, uh, Deshaun Watson bought himself,
09:26I believe at least two more weeks of, uh, let's see how this thing goes before we have
09:34to reevaluate it.
09:35And, and from a Brown standpoint, let's be honest about it.
09:37That's a, that that's pretty significant for them.
09:40Uh, because I think that if you, uh, make a quarterback change going into week three,
09:45your home opener, uh, it's a panic move, uh, understandably so.
09:49And also too, um, I don't think that that breeds a lot of optimism for the balance of
09:54the season, because you're going to now put in the guy who lost the quarterback competition,
09:59right?
09:59So, um, it, it, for a variety of reasons and storylines, et cetera, absolutely huge that the
10:10Browns did win that game on Sunday.
10:12Daryl, I was kind of just thinking about this in my mind earlier in the show as well, because
10:18obviously some forward thinking, but you kind of go back and think about it.
10:21Deshaun plays well in one of these games, maybe not so well in the other one.
10:26You probably imagine one good game in the next two also buys him probably a week five.
10:32Yeah, exactly.
10:34And, and there's ebbs and flows to this, right?
10:36And, and, you know, I was thinking about this, um, because I, you know, went and, uh, rewatched
10:42everything and then kind of looked at around the league, right?
10:45Uh, week one was a tremendous offensive explosion for everyone.
10:49It felt like, except for the Cleveland Browns.
10:51Right.
10:52And then, but you look around and then you look at week two, what happened?
10:56Well, the defenses picked up a little bit, right?
10:59Not as big of, uh, offensive explosions across the board.
11:03There were some, okay, but just not, not everywhere like we saw in week one, whereas, you know,
11:09I wouldn't call that an offensive explosion, although for the, by Brown standards, 23 points
11:13in a game kind of is, uh, but, um, you know, the fact that they made strides forward offensively.
11:19Right.
11:20Um, and so this is a week to week league and I know that's very cliche and it's really boring,
11:26uh, for fans to hear, but it's true, man.
11:29And Todd Munkin talked about it on Monday too.
11:32Like, yeah, they won on Sunday.
11:34Guess what?
11:34Now it don't matter.
11:35Okay.
11:36They're one-on-one.
11:36That's all well and good.
11:37And that's not me being negative.
11:39Like that's the reality because this week they got Carolina that they got to get ready for.
11:43And the fact that they won at Tampa Bay right now for all intents and purposes, that's now
11:47in the rear view mirror.
11:49They got to, you know, put that one on the shelf just like they did after week one when
11:53they got blown out.
11:55So, uh, and, and it's about how consistent you can be as a team week to week.
12:00And that's now the next test for this team, because as we know, historically winning, uh,
12:06games in a row, so much challenging for the Browns.
12:09So this is going to be a good test for them to see if now, okay, you feel good coming
12:13off
12:13of what you did and you should, because of the way you play, you play good on both sides
12:17in all three phases, offense, defense, special teams feel good about it.
12:21But now can you bring that forward?
12:23Can you play just as well this weekend against those Carolina Panthers?
12:28Speaking of the Carolina Panthers, Daryl, what are you expecting for the fan reaction
12:32for Deshaun coming off of a win in Tampa Bay?
12:34Yeah, you know, I, I, let's put it this way.
12:37I don't think it'll be as, as venomous as, uh, it would have been if we had a continuation
12:42of what happened in Jacksonville.
12:44So, um, and you know what, here's, and this is something Deshaun needs to understand.
12:50Okay.
12:51Uh, he's not a victim.
12:52It's not the media's fault.
12:54It's not the fans fault.
12:55Okay.
12:56Uh, you're, you are expected to play well.
12:58You're not expected to throw for 400 yards and five touchdowns every game.
13:02Okay.
13:02No one has those expectations.
13:04That's ludicrous, but you're expected to play consistently.
13:07So now go out there and do it.
13:08And if he does that, I'm going to tell you right now, Browns fans are going to cheer for
13:12him.
13:13Okay.
13:14Because that's how sports works.
13:15All right.
13:16Uh, you know, and, and, uh, I was, uh, having a conversation, uh, with a colleague, uh,
13:23last night about this very subject, right?
13:24We don't talk about the circumstances that he came to Cleveland with anymore.
13:29Okay.
13:30Uh, you know, he's, he's paid his debts to, right.
13:34He, the lawsuits have been settled.
13:36He serves his suspension and all that.
13:38Right.
13:38The questions he gets from all of us are all football related.
13:42Now, unfortunately, many of those questions have been on the negative side because, well,
13:46there's just been nothing but negative to talk about.
13:49Now this week, guess what?
13:50We're tomorrow.
13:50We're going to go in there and the questions for John going to be rather positive.
13:54He played well.
13:54And that's how this works.
13:56Okay.
13:56If you play well, the questions are more positive.
13:59The fans cheer.
14:00If you play poorly, the questions are going to have a negative tone and the fans are going
14:04to boo.
14:05That's how this thing works.
14:06So if he goes out and he plays well, I anticipate not all Browns fans.
14:11Okay.
14:11Cause there will be some that will boo him no matter what.
14:14And that's completely understandable.
14:15You pay your money, your hard earned money to get in that building and watch the Browns
14:19play.
14:19You've earned that right to express yourself as, you know, as long as you're, you know,
14:24doing it in an appropriate manner.
14:26Okay.
14:26But, uh, you play well, the fans are going to cheer.
14:29And I think that that's what that's ultimately what's going to happen.
14:31And if he plays poorly, then guess what?
14:33The boo birds will be out.
14:35Darrell, when we talk about Todd Monk, and I, I mean, I think there's some things that
14:39probably impress conferences.
14:40You question whether or not he should say, I had that moment yesterday, uh, listening
14:44to him talk about, uh, splitting up the quarterback reps throughout training camp.
14:48And Hey, one of these, uh, you know, it had helped out Shador Sanders.
14:51Maybe didn't help out to Sean so much.
14:53What did you make of those comments?
14:55Well, I, he's being honest.
14:56Okay.
14:56And I, you know what, I'm, I'm not going to rip the guy for being honest because listen,
15:00okay.
15:00Well, I, if someone who belly ached about the bland, boring, uh, milk toast that we
15:06got out of Kevin's the fancy for six years.
15:08Okay.
15:09I'm not going to rip on the coach for being honest when he's answering our questions.
15:12Okay.
15:12He's right though.
15:14First of all, was anything that Todd Monk and said.
15:18Wrong.
15:19No.
15:19Was anything he said factually incorrect?
15:22No.
15:23So what's the problem?
15:24He was honest about it.
15:25Yeah.
15:25Ideally, you just want to give your starting quarterback, all your reps in training camp,
15:29and then you're ready to go for the season.
15:31Unfortunately, that was not an opportunity afforded to them.
15:34They had to pick between two guys, but you had to split it up.
15:37And when you take reps away, well, that's less work you can get in with a specific quarterback.
15:44So I have, first of all, no issue with anything Todd Monk and said on the subject yesterday.
15:48I appreciate the honesty and the candor.
15:50I'm not going to rip him for it.
15:51And also to everything he said was a hundred percent correct.
15:55Is it a shame that they couldn't pick one of these guys and go all in investing in them
16:00and preparing for that specific player, whether it was the Sean or Shadour and a hundred percent
16:04of the reps in training camp?
16:05Absolutely.
16:06You would have loved that.
16:07That wasn't the Browns reality.
16:08And I think that they made the most of the situation for what it was.
16:12And Todd Munkin's right.
16:14Okay.
16:14It wasn't ideal.
16:15They made the most of it.
16:17Yeah.
16:17You would have liked to commit to one guy and get all those reps.
16:20And there is a price you pay when you do that.
16:23And it's no surprise when you go back and look at the Browns historically, the years they
16:28have these quarterback competitions, the offense really struggles.
16:33Why?
16:34Number one, they don't have a franchise quarterback.
16:35Number two, you're spending all this time investing in a competition rather than investing
16:41in one singular player and building a complete bond around that one player.
16:45All right, Daryl.
