Smith machine lunges can be a great hypertrophy-focused leg exercise because the fixed bar path gives you more stability, letting you concentrate on loading the quads and glutes instead of balancing the weight.
β
1οΈβ£ Set your stance before loading heavily.
Step far enough forward that you can descend comfortably without your front heel lifting.
A slightly longer stance will usually emphasize the glutes more, while a somewhat shorter stance tends to increase quad involvement.
2οΈβ£ Keep your front foot planted.
Maintain pressure through the whole foot, especially the heel and midfoot.
Avoid letting the heel rise or your foot roll excessively inward or outward.
3οΈβ£ Control the descent.
Lower yourself over roughly 2β3 seconds instead of dropping quickly.
The controlled eccentric can improve positioning and gives the target muscles more time under tension.
