00:30I said I was watching the, and, you know, I'm not really, are we really in control of our thoughts?

00:40Anyway, I'm watching the Niners play the Cardinals and march up and down the field methodically.
00:46And then I'm thinking about the Dolphins game where I think they had the ball five times and scored five
00:50touchdowns.
00:52And I'm thinking, man, they're precise.
00:55They look like a well-oiled machine.
00:57They got a quarterback in complete control.
00:59A lot of quick hitters.
01:02Reminds me a little bit about, you know, the 49ers salad days offense.
01:08Oh, the old salad days.
01:09Yeah.
01:10I mean, it can, if you want to go ahead and like three games, if you want to give Brock
01:15Purdy the Joe Montana career, that's probably unfair.
01:18But what he's done through three games is actually remarkable.
01:21And so, when you start to look at it, and Mark did a fairly deep dive on some of the
01:26numbers surrounding that offense and this offense.
01:28And each have Hall of Famers at running back.
01:32They both do.
01:33This one has a Hall of Fame tight end.
01:35That one had a Hall of Fame wide receiver.
01:37This one has a Hall of Fame wide receiver.
01:38So, I do think that there are some comps.

01:42They would probably, I have to confirm this, but it's only been three games.
01:47If they average this number of points per game for the rest of the year, they'll be one of the
01:51top ten scoring offenses in the history of the league.
01:55And the best 49er offense in the history of the organization.
01:59That I know for sure.
02:00No 49er team has ever averaged 32.7 points per game, which is where they're at right now.
02:05So, sure.
02:06Two of the games came against weak defenses, at least.
02:09I don't know if the Cardinals are the worst team, but it's not a great defense, and it was banged
02:13up.
02:13And the Dolphins are a bunch of babies.
02:15So, like, I expect that number to go down.
02:17But, what do I think of your statement?
02:20I think that your statement is accurate.
02:23From this perspective, the 40, if you just look at the offense only, and I think this is fun because
02:31people like Evan, for example, you didn't see the 49ers of the 80s.
02:36Nope.
02:37This is what it felt like.
02:39When the quarterback, you said something earlier.
02:41When the quarterback drops back and he releases the ball on TV, you expect it to be caught.
02:47And when the offense takes the field, you expect them to go get a touchdown.
02:52And that's what it felt like to watch the Joe Montana and Steve Young 49ers.
02:57There was just, there was a bar.
03:00There was an expectation.
03:01You were surprised and disappointed when they had to settle for three.
03:04Yeah.
03:06That's, I mean, that's the way it looks to me.
03:11What do you think of this one?
03:14So, I compared Brock Purdy early in his career to John Stockton.

03:20He's going to get you 15 assists.
03:23But now he's kind of turned into Steve Nash.
03:26He still can get you the assists, but he can score, too.
03:30He can make plays for himself.
03:31He can make plays for others.
03:33He can make plays for, you know, other guys than just the guy in the screen and role.
03:38Really diversified his game.
03:40A little bit better of an athlete than you'd give him credit for?

03:44Well, the two best plays from Sunday didn't count, I thought.

03:49And then his 40-hour run, they got called back.

03:55Yeah, I thought it was a little weak from the fantasy files of Dan Dibley.

04:01But, yeah, I mean, he should have gotten 40 in the ton, but he got 25 because he got called
04:06back.
04:06Speaking of fantasy, there was a guy that texted in earlier that said, because I was like,
04:11somewhere, somebody lost their fantasy matchup because Debo didn't get a point for the reception.
04:17And someone texted in and said that PPR cost them in their fantasy matchup.
04:23I've never, is there anybody in somebody with no catches and 80 yards?
04:26No, that's actually an NFL record.
04:28That's incredible.
04:29That's the most receiving yards.
04:30In fact, he didn't even have a target in the game, let alone a catch.
04:35But I would argue that that fantasy player that texted you guys, boy, that really comes
04:40from the files of being a pessimist and a negative point of view.

04:45You didn't deserve, like.
04:47Well, that's true.
04:47You can't be mad at he didn't catch it.

05:03I mean, but the fact it was the first drive of the game.
05:06I mean, so we've established it wasn't a flea flicker, but we know that hook and ladders
05:12hook and ladder did not.

05:15But yeah.
05:16So was was the Walsh, Montana, Rice, Craig offense known for the razzle dazzle?
05:23Or was it just like Stein, he was talking about methodical march down the field and every
05:29single time it's 10, 12 plays, 85 yards and six points.
05:32What Bill Walsh's offense did, what was then known as the West Coast offense that took over
05:38the NFL, was a much more short passing game and involving the tight end and the full back.
05:46And so really spreading the ball around.
05:48I would not call it razzle dazzle by any stretch.
05:51That was more reserved for Dan Marino's Dolphins or more so teams that later in the 80s and 90s
05:57did what was called the run and shoot.
05:59And Jerry Glanville with the Falcons and whatnot.
06:02But there at the time, what right there was a lot of like end arounds and reverses, which
06:08was not as popular and prolific back then.
06:13And so they kind of brought that to the table that felt a little bit.
06:16But no, it wasn't like flea flickers and hook and ladders.
06:20And there wasn't there was definitely not a lot of that with Walsh's Niners.
06:24Yeah, because you're seeing other play callers take what Shanahan is doing and kind of rev
06:30it up.
06:30Like there was a play on Monday Night Football last night where was it Cleve Raymond that
06:33ran through the offensive line on a motion play?
06:36Like, I don't know which gap it was, but I don't think I've ever seen a wide receiver
06:40in motion run between a guard and a tackle.
06:43And so Ben Johnson is, you know, taking maybe something that Shanahan uses and just tweaking
06:48it a little bit.
06:49Right.
06:49It's the ultimate rub route where you don't have to rub anybody if you run between the
06:53guard and the tackle.
06:54Like your defensive back can't really get into there and jam you because you're going
06:58through two 300 pounders and you're going to able to slip out.
07:01And the other one he did was the classic Shanahan, which is send you in motion and then get
07:07the snap and immediately just throw it right to him.
07:09And it's one on one.
07:10And can my guy beat your guy?
07:11And they did.
07:12And, you know, Philadelphia went from looking OK.
07:15And I mean, Andy Dalton comes in, the redheaded pistol and like, oh, my God, that thing got
07:21over in a hurry.
07:23Your boys are in trouble.
07:24Nothing wrong with Philly, though.

07:27That was a poor performance.
07:29That was really like I get Ben Johnson getting an experienced QB three to move the ball.

07:36The Bears defense is god awful.

07:43I mean, I know that the Bears can put up points, but they had a case of the Keenums.

09:12Which is, you know, something people, nerds are taking over the NFL.

09:15The context of having your backup in should over rule whatever, you know, PhD is in the
09:22booth saying, well, this is the amount of expected points in this situation, so that
09:26leans this way and we're going to go for it.
09:28I wonder.

09:29I wonder if it's a math equation or if it's a guy like Ben Johnson's like, I got a play
09:34that I think can work.
09:36Oh, the arrogance of this is going to.
09:39Like, I see what I'm seeing and I got a, ooh, I got the X and the O for that.
09:44But then it doesn't work because life happens.
09:46Yeah, it's probably both.
09:47And I do think that the math of it is like leading you towards like, you should go.
09:51No, because if you get six, if you get seven, it's better than three and three is almost
09:55guaranteed.
09:56And also, if you get the three, now you kick off and more often than not, it's a touchback.
10:01So now they're at the 35 or you go for it and it's seven or nothing.
10:05And if it's nothing, well, they're at the three yard line.
10:07And so our defense now has much more room with which to work.
10:11I think the math of it is that.
10:13But what you talked about is you got QB three and you're in a spot where you can go up

10:18So for me, the human, I want the points.
10:20But again, I'm a little bit older and I don't have my XL open right now, but I do think
10:25that the math of it is you go for it.

10:44I mean, to me, that's a big difference, too, between the two and the one.
10:47And to me, the one, the one yard line is where we can have a conversation in a moment

10:56Well, the other interesting play was when they did get in, what, right before the half.

11:01The Eagles did.
11:01They almost didn't get the playoff.

11:04Some would suggest they didn't.

11:06But to me, you know, obviously, the game was won by the Bears.
11:13So, they get stopped on downs at the two.
11:17Philly drives 95 yards to get down to the other thing, and then they turn it over.
11:22And then, like, that's ball game, pretty much, with Hurts in the tent.
11:28It is interesting trying to think about what Kyle Shanahan's going to do in certain spots.
11:33It's, I think, one of the reasons why he is so good.
11:37But also, people bring up, you know, the big moments in the Super Bowls where sometimes
11:41he overthinks things.
11:42I tend to lean towards you're in that situation because of Kyle Shanahan as opposed to he's
11:48the reason why you're not getting over the hill.
11:50But I don't know.
11:52Like, you just brought up, what would Kyle do?
11:53I find myself thinking that a lot, especially when, like, we'll be sitting in the press box
11:59watching the games.
12:00And so, you know, you can kind of see, like, who's coming out and what formations.
12:04And I just, I feel like I'm always wrong.
12:06And I feel like that's what it's like trying to be a DC.
12:09Just like, I don't know.
12:11It's a pass or a run.
12:12I sure was at the end of the game on Sunday.
12:15We both were, yeah.
12:16Like, and I think what a lot of us are noticing, and it's why so much of the conversation after
12:20the game was how much are you trusting Brock?
12:23And, like, have you ever trusted a QB like this before?
12:26And he brought up Matt Ryan and Matt Schaub back in Houston is because we're seeing him
12:30in moments where he would kick field goals or run the ball or just give it to Christian
12:35and see what we can do.
12:36And we're watching him in those situations now drop Brock back and throw the ball down
12:41the field.
12:42Like, he did not get the ball up 29-27 with two minutes to go and think to himself for
12:49one second, let's just run the clock out.
12:51Let's get a couple first downs and get out of here.
12:53He did not.
12:53He's like, no, let's fire down the field.
12:56How many timeouts did Arizona have at that point?
12:58Started it with two.
12:59Yep.
12:59Okay.
13:00I mean, I thought for sure they would run, force them into a timeout or not, and at least
13:07take it down to the two-minute warning.
13:08But they were on the move.
13:10Like, they were on the move before it got to two minutes.
13:12And I think that so far through three games, this season has shown me that, you know,
13:17Kyle Shanahan is not necessarily only the coach we thought, which is, I want to run it 30
13:23times.
13:23I want to possess it more than them.
13:25I want to control the game.
13:27That's my way of getting wins.
13:29This year's team is throwing it more than they're running it.
13:32They're not winning the time of possession at all.
13:34They're scoring quickly with explosive offense.
13:37And so I'm not saying that Shanahan won't go back to that when he needs it, but right
13:41now through three games, this offense is totally different.

14:39and we didn't think it would be that he's got the better stuff.

14:46He's got the weapons.
14:48Like why not drop back?
14:51Like you're trusting Brock who has turned the ball over one time and not been sacked.

15:20going to call anything differently, but I wonder because of how depleted the defense
15:25was, if that almost kind of hurt them on the other side of the ball just because they
15:30didn't really have the ball a lot.
15:32They didn't need it.
15:33They were just putting up points.
15:34Yeah, I think you can hear on one of the sideline mics, Osa Odigizua, he actually turns to Brock
15:40Purdy and says, knock it off.
