The stats through the first 52 games of their career are very similar.

00:01Oh, he got thrown for a loop earlier. Simon Edvinson is in Sweden. That's nowhere near
00:05Detroit where they're going to begin the season on Friday night. Good morning, 97.1 Jim Costa,
00:10John Jansen, Heather Park. We've got Gov and Greg behind the glass. We may explore that
00:14a little more in the nine o'clock hour. Plus Tom versus Vegas, a man taking on an entire
00:18desert city, big, tall buildings, all of it. Before we get into any of the fun in the nine
00:23o'clock hour, we had Dan Campbell on yesterday and I want to know if this
00:30comparison is fair. The Gibbs-Berry comparison. Are we entering a world where
00:36that's not blasphemous? Because I asked him about it and he said, I see some of
00:40it, right? Yeah. What do you think, John? Well, so you don't want to be a prisoner
00:47of the moment and we are in love with Jameer Gibbs and everything that he does
00:52for this offense and his numbers, his impact is tremendous. And I know that
00:59there's a lot of people that are looking, especially as Jameer Gibbs has that
01:02moment where he passes Barry Sims in terms of, you know, all-time touchdowns
01:06and he's second in rushing touchdowns now only to Barry. Now he's only about
01:10halfway, just shy of halfway to reach Barry. He's also only in year four and
01:16you're looking at Barry's career going, well, that was 10 years and is he on pace
01:21to surpass Barry? Yes. Well, yeah, let me give you the comparison. I've got it
01:25through 52 career games. Jameer Gibbs has 55 touchdowns. Barry has 49. For total
01:33yards, Barry had 5,800. Gibbs is just shy of 5,500, but right there, neck and neck
01:39with Barry Sanders. Right. I mean, so in total, I'm glad you use total yards because
01:46Jameer Gibbs is going to get more receiving yards than Barry did. It's also a
01:50different game. It's not like Barry couldn't catch. No, he was proficient at
01:53that, but there was more screens. There was more things like that. Whereas
01:57the modern offenses to have the ideal back, they need to be able to line up in
02:02some slot positions and he does an amazing job at that. I think their
02:05comparison is fair game. When I, when I saw the play he made over the weekend
02:10where he's the place dead to rights going right and he's able to just shift the
02:15entire field, bend the field. I mean, that was a, a Barry ask run and the
02:20production is Barry ask. And I know that's held in as higher regard as you
02:25can in the city and in football. I mean that Barry is considered the number one
02:28running back of all time to say that we've got a guy doing those things. You
02:32gotta be very careful with that, but I think Gibbs has earned it. Yes. He's
02:36earned some of the early comparisons. Now, the thing about Barry is Barry was
02:41unbelievably durable for what he did and the amount of times he touched the
02:47ball. Um, other than the 93 season, like he played a full compliment every
02:53year. Yeah. Gibbs going to have to hold up, especially with this bigger workload
02:56now and moving forward. But, um, you know, Barry also retired early. If Gibbs
03:01plays a longer career, he may end up stacking up even better numbers. Yes, but we
03:07get into the debate of touches and wear and tear and what does it mean? And we
03:14kind of touched on this a little bit, obviously when Jameer Gibbs was, um, the
03:18hold in and working on the new contract. If he is as durable as Barry, he is going
03:25to end his career with either similar or better numbers than Barry had. So then I
03:31think you also have to weigh not only longevity, but at their peak. So Barry had
03:35two different 2000 all purpose yard season, right? You know, we're talking
03:40could Gibbs do that this year? He'd have to do that. You know, like we're still
03:44only three weeks into the season, but if you start popping a couple 2000 yard
03:47seasons, you make this a real comparison. Yeah. And, and it's also with the, the
03:55perspective that in the first couple of years for Jameer Gibbs, he was sharing reps
04:00in the backfield point. And we talked about his rookie season. When are we going to
04:03see more Jameer Gibbs? Should we be seeing more Jameer Gibbs? They brought
04:06him along at a measured pace. Whereas when Barry, when Barry hit the ground, he
04:11hit the ground running because he was a top five pick. Um, and it's not like, you
04:17know, I mean, Jameer Gibbs was, was still at top of the half of the first round.
04:20Yeah. Here's what Dan Campbell said yesterday. You know, I brought up, Hey, are you, do
04:25you see some of that with Gibbs compared to Barry?
05:06Well, I 100% agree with that. I'm glad he's ours. I think we don't want to face
05:09him. We both agreed immediately. I mean, he, he is such a dynamic player and here's,
05:14here's part of why I, I always felt like Barry was so durable. He never took a
05:19direct hit or rarely did because he was so shifty. Everybody was, you know, they're
05:24all arm tackles because he was, he was never lined up heading straight downhill and
05:32taking a direct hit. And Gibbs is similar to that. So from Detroiters, we need to
05:38know if this is fair game, if this comparison is allowed or if this is like
05:42blasphemous, nobody compares to Barry two, four, eight, five, three, nine, 97, 97, you
05:47know? And for me, I mean, I, I was very little at the end of Barry's career. So this
05:53is not, I mean, John, you are the better person to speak to this.
05:56Well, I mean, I mean, you've seen the highlight reels and all that stuff. And Barry was so
06:04special. He was so special. And here's the other thing is offenses are so different now
06:11in regards to how much offense and the ability to get the ball in the hands of your running
06:19back in very creative and different ways. Like for Barry, it was more like they would
06:24never line them up as a receiver. And now you're seeing Gibbs do that. And some of that
06:29is Gibbs skillset, but that's just, that's kind of where offenses have evolved to.
06:35The other thing I noticed in just doing the stat comparison, Barry had 20 fumbles at this
06:42point in his career. Gibbs only has six, you know, Barry was good for five, six fumble.
06:50You know what I mean? Early in his career, he had 10, his, his very first season. Gibbs
06:55has not put the ball on, on the ground nearly as often. No, Gibbs had one very costly one
06:59in his rookie year. Is that in a certain playoff game? Hey, both men have played in an NFC title
07:06game. Yes. Uh, I mean, the comparisons are certainly there. Now I would say pump the brakes
07:11a little bit because we do need to see if Jameer Gibbs is going to be as durable as
07:14Barry was. Of course. And you're, you're, you're what just a couple of games into his
07:18fourth season. I think the trajectory is certainly there. Calls texts. We'll explore
07:26this into the nine o'clock hour update John Simon Edmondson, just when you thought it
07:30couldn't get worse. And, um, Tom versus Vegas. Oh boy. One man versus an entire
07:35gambling enterprise. It's 97 one.
