00:00All weather. I'm loving the chill in the air. It feels like football season.
00:03It does indeed. And certainly a better performance from Drake May last week.
00:08You've had a chance to, to watch it, break it down. Was it,
00:12was it decision-making? Was it play calling?
00:16Was it the confidence returning for Drake May?
00:19I mean, I think it's all those things. Obviously it's never just one thing,
00:23especially when it comes to playing quarterback in the NFL.
00:26I think the first drive you saw confident Drake may,
00:29I think he got his legs going early, had the long scramble to the left,
00:32made some big throws. And ultimately I think that was,
00:36and he said it after the game. I know you guys saw it. He goes, yeah,
00:39that was a bit of a relief.
00:40And I think the relief came after the first drive because he played
00:43confidently the entire game. Now it wasn't all perfect.
00:47And actually I know the strip sack, you know, people have talked about that.
00:50I actually looked at that as a confident play by him because he knew where he
00:54wanted to go. Chisholm was getting open.
00:56I thought Ben Brown just got, you know, a legal hands to the face.
01:00It was like the most obvious call you've ever seen.
01:02And honestly,
01:03I think if he gets another half of a second to throw it,
01:06it's a touchdown to Chisholm. So I knew he was seeing the play.
01:09Well, the interception, the Dobbs, it could be a better throw.
01:12He could be a better catch. I'm not concerned about that.
01:14That's one of those.
01:15I always talk about interceptions and kind of three categories.
01:18There's bad decisions. There's the physical part.
01:20Is it a poor throw? And then there's always kind of a third part is the receiver,
01:25not complete the catch and bobble the ball.
01:27So it was kind of a mixture of, of two and three.
01:29So I thought he was confident and he looked relaxed.
01:32He was smiling on the sidelines.
01:34So it was great to kind of see him get back to where we all expected him to be.
01:38Brian,
01:39that's an interesting point that you talk about the,
01:41the fumble in the pocket.
01:43We asked Rabel about that.
01:44He kind of said it was a lot of push coming from the old line.
01:47And take us just into the mind of a quarterback on how a clock works.
01:53Like when you start to feel that pocket collapsing around you,
01:57like how, what's that whole process like?
01:59Yeah.
02:00And I think each play is different.
02:01When you call a play in the huddle,
02:02you have a,
02:03an idea of what that timing of that play is going to be,
02:06obviously from repetition,
02:07obviously going to,
02:08if you're going against a team like the Seattle Seahawks in all week,
02:12your mind is like, I'm going to be a little sped up that specific play.
02:17And the reason I say I'm kind of encouraged by it is they game plan,
02:21that specific play for that coverage.
02:23He has Chisholm come in motion.
02:24He's going to run a little juke route behind the linebacker and he's there
02:27and Drake is locked in on him.
02:29So it just tells me like, he knows what the intent of the play is.
02:32He's going to, he, he knows the coverage.
02:34And to your part,
02:35Wiggy like this is a feel thing because your eyes are downfield.
02:38So you have to feel around you.
02:39And, and we even talked about this last week.
02:42Like I thought last year he was overconfident almost to a fault.
02:45How many times last year did we see him try to make a play while guys are
02:48draped all around them?
02:49So if anything, I know it was,
02:51it was not the result that we would like to see,
02:54but it showed me that this was kind of back to where Drake was.
02:57Like, I know what the, the, the play is.
02:59I know where I need to go.
03:00I'm, I'm banking on my line to give me the protection long enough to do it.
03:04And I honestly,
03:04I think if it wasn't just this illegal hands of the face that wasn't called,
03:08I think Ben Brown holds up long enough for him to get the completion.
03:11So to me, if anything, it was the opposite of timid.
03:14It was, it was being aggressive and doing it, but yeah, I, it's tough each week.
03:19Each play is different and you just really have to feel, I mean,
03:22it's more of a feel than a, than a seeing thing.
03:24Cause your eyes are down the field.
03:25We gave, we gave a lot of credit to the defense when it came to preventing
03:30Josh Allen from being able to run the ball.
03:33I, now I see the, you know, people are speculating that he's hurt.
03:37You look at that.
03:38What do you, what do you think the real answer is there?
03:41No, I think they just went in and knew how to play them.
03:43I mean, there was an air of confidence.
03:45I thought from the Patriots, and I think it's because they know this team,
03:48they know the quarterback, they know how to play these guys.
03:51And, and I think Vrabel knew that all week.
03:53And when you go to play a guy like Josh Allen,
03:56you have to have a very specific game plan.
03:58It's different than if you're going to play Kirk cousins this week.
04:00It's just, he is such a unicorn.
04:02And, and you basically have to tell your front seven guys, look,
04:06this is not about getting and sacking him this week.
04:09It is, it is.
04:09We used to call it cage rush.
04:11Like we need to cage rush him.
04:13Don't be selfish.
04:14Don't get out of your lane.
04:15Don't get out of your gap when you have the opportunity to go.
04:17And I actually just saw a clip this morning.
04:20It was kind of the back end zone view of the way the defense played him.
04:23And he tries to roll, right?
04:25They cut him off.
04:26He tries to go back left.
04:27Here come the linebackers screaming downhill to put pressure on him.
04:29And he felt, you could see that he felt that all day.
04:32And, and the one play that really stood out to me, uh, the difference of the two quarterbacks
04:36this past Sunday were the two, two point plays and, and oddly enough, and they, they
04:40brand very similar concepts and the, the, the Patriots defense gave an all out blitz look
04:46to Josh Allen pre-snap.
04:48So here they are, they're all mugged up in there on the snap.
04:51They drop out, but in his mind, he's like, okay, was it going to be pressure?
04:55He's speeding up his process and he forces the ball in the back of the end zone.
04:58Dalton Kincaid ends up being the check down wide open.
05:00And conversely, Drake may on his two point play, they run a very similar play.
05:04He's patient in the pocket.
05:06He moves, he's going to step up.
05:07He sees moderate the check down and, and, and he, he completes the pass.
05:10And so I think with Zach core, obviously Brable and what that defense did without Gonzalez,
05:17without Barmore was so impressive because they played the game the right way.
05:20Now Allen got his, I mean, he's always going to, he had the long wind of Coleman, but at
05:24the end, they pressured him enough.
05:26He does the spin move and throws it up and Woodson's there to pick, pick it off to seal the
05:29game.
05:30So look, this defense, other than the Jacksonville game, where I think they were just kind of
05:34exhausted from the turnovers and what it had been this defense, although they don't have
05:39the big name edge rusher, they play with such intensity.
05:42They finished to the ball.
05:43I mean, ponders running down the field to recover the fumble.
05:46I think Woodson has become one of the best young safeties in the game.
05:50And this is all without Gonzalez or Barmore.
05:51So I think it's very encouraging, uh, what they've done this year.
05:55We've got to take a quick break with Brian Hoyer.
05:57I know Courtney has a question.
05:59Uh, I, I want you to tell us how you beat this Raiders team.
06:03We come back and then also you're, uh, also your good friend and former teammate, the goat
06:10may, may want to play one more season.
06:13So I want to get your thoughts on that coming up next.
06:17Brian Hoyer, more of Brian Hoyer on the Greg Hill show.
