01:04would be this early in the season based on what he did last year i think um there's look there's

01:09and there's some bad and there's some indecisiveness i think that's the biggest thing and it's a little
01:13bit of what we saw in that in that playoff run there was some great throws in that playoff run

01:17there was some some bad sacks some indecisiveness um the one thing that i would say is there's just
01:22there's certain plays where he doesn't look comfortable his feet he's kind of drifting back
01:26and i don't like that uh even the throw that he was able to get to eli raritan uh for
01:31the big gain
01:32he's still throwing off his back foot i don't think he needs to do that and so sometimes i think
01:36he's
01:36feeling pressure when it's not there and there's other times where there is pressure i mean the
01:40interception and i know this is the big debate and who cares whether it was tipped or not it was
01:44an
01:44interception but tj watts coming down the middle of the pocket and he can't step into the throw and
01:49so those are one of those plays and i've i've seen variable talk about it like you got to know
01:53this is why the quarterback gets paid the big bucks like man i can't fully commit to that throw i'm
01:59going to try to get it to the back or throw it at his feet and move on to the
02:01next play so there is a
02:02little bit of that but there are some plays that i watch in this game and i'm like that's the
02:06drake
02:07may that we know to roll out and fire it you know 50 yards down the field of romeo dobbs

02:11i love the play call on that i i can't take this whole conservative play call uh talk because
02:18there there are a lot of plays that i'm watching that are designed to be explosive they hit a few
02:22of them uh the one that was actually the the fumble by ramondre they're running why leak um this is
02:28not
02:28a play that was part of the patriots offense when i played in it it's more of a west coast
02:32play where
02:32you're trying to get uh the the defense to react and go right like you're rolling out and throw it

02:38left and i've seen some people say look you can throw it to the tight end sure uh maybe yeah

02:43that's what the play is designed to do but getting it to monitor and get up the field now if
02:47he doesn't
02:47fumble the ball you're on the 30 yard line and you go down and score on that first drive i
02:51think we're
02:51feeling a little bit different about uh the the game and it's just to me i'm seeing a lot of
02:56similarities and and i'm going to use this and not in comparison to this player but to this player's
03:01rookie year and max jones rookie year we we played pretty well on offense but there was there was a
03:07period where everybody kind of took a turn having an me or a my bad and i remember josh coming
03:13in one
03:13day and and basically sitting the offense down and saying look we're winning games we're playing okay
03:18but we got to stop all taking turns saying my bad on this play you know it's it's they have
03:24a positive
03:24play it's a delay a game they they move the ball down the field there's a holding penalty it's just
03:28one of those things where they're going forward and then they're taking steps back and i think that's
03:32what's really holding them back from being the offense that we saw uh play as last year so brian
03:38if you're saying that the play calling isn't conservative and you know more than i do by a
03:42country mile um then you're putting it on the quarterback for not being able to maximize the
03:48play that's being called well not necessarily the defense has a say here too guys and and i i just
03:54saw
03:54this yesterday you know scrolling through on x or twitter whatever we call it now and someone kind
03:59of broke down all the plays against the cover six right that's been the hot hot ticket item you
04:03know what do you do against cover six and and they did a good job they ran the they ran
04:06the ball into
04:07cover six that's where you want to run the football they're daring you to to do it i kind of
04:11always
04:11liken it to you know you go play pickup basketball and the team the guy you're playing is like you
04:15know basically shutting you off to the right because you're a righty and he's like daring you to go
04:19left that's what teams are doing when they play cover six they're saying we know that you have a
04:23great deep ball thrower he likes to throw deep we aren't going to let him do that you have to
04:26run
04:26the football and so they had some good plays against the cover six um calling a game you are
04:33calling plays to be explosive but sometimes the defense lines up in a certain way that takes away
04:38on that specific play what the explosive play was but i look at the the rollout design rollout to
04:44romeo dobbs it's a well-designed play they run a three-level pattern to the right the corner falls
04:49off on the short corner the short bow route and he drills the the flag to to dobbs like that's
04:55an
04:55aggressive play call the y leak which ends up being a check down is a an aggressive play call
05:00and so and and i saw brable i think he was talking to you guys on monday he's like look
05:03sometimes
05:04the coaches we send in a a bad play call and the players make it good and sometimes we send
05:09in a
05:09great play call and the players you know they don't execute it so i think there's just a mix of
05:14that going on right now we don't have a consistency of the offense there's there's some good plays there's
05:19some ones that aren't so good and i think they just got to start eliminating everybody kind of
05:23saying my bad on a play here then it goes to the the receivers my bad they're like they just
05:28got to
05:28be more consistent and i think we'll feel a lot better about the offense and about drake may
05:32see brian when i when i look at it and i'm and i say the things about the regression for
05:37me
05:37i asked a simple question through the first two games of last season and the first two games of this
05:44season i say has he taken a step forward or is he taking a step back my expectations are he
05:51would
05:51have taken 10 step full forward but it looks like he's taken one or two steps back yeah well and
05:58i
05:58came on the show and and proclaimed i was gonna i thought he was gonna take those 10 steps forward
06:03and we haven't seen it yet that's what i'll say is yeah that's the biggest word i i don't think
06:06he's
06:07taking steps backwards i think he's right about where he was at the beginning of last year and how
06:11he finished the last year obviously there was there was a period in between there where we were like
06:16this guy's you know that the mvp i'm just gonna say it's not there yet and and if this goes
06:23on
06:23for another two three weeks now look it doesn't get any easier you lose mike on way new so he's
06:28already i think and and i think i saw brable say this too there's got to be trust from the
06:32quarterback to the line and the line to the quarterback that there's going to be protection
06:35and so i think the line has played pretty well up to this point and now you're going to have
06:39to
06:40replace on way new and i think the one thing and david andrews and i were talking about this
06:44yesterday at the end of our show i just want to see drake may go out there and cut it
06:47loose and
06:47let it rip and not be a little tentative in the pocket uh he's done a good job of moving
06:53up and
06:53running when it's there i just want to see him when when he knows the place there and he's got
06:57a he's
06:58got to hang in there and and put that back foot in the ground and and take it make the
07:02throw and
07:03take a hit like he did many times last year we know that that's in there it's just got to
07:07come out
07:07and i think it's one of those things where he has one of those days where he's feeling good and
07:11he's
07:11letting it rip and it's going to come back the confidence is going to come back and we'll see
07:15the player that we saw the majority of the year last year brian hoyers our guest as he is every
07:19wednesday speaking of the confidence and i'm not making excuses certainly but you you played the
07:25position is when it comes to losing the super bowl the way they lost the super bowl when when
07:32it comes to things like that does that affect the confidence of a quarterback the the next season
07:39well look i mean i can only speak from my own experiences but there are times when
07:44even you know when you've played good football and you go through a stretch where things aren't
07:48going well you you almost have to go back out there to improve it to yourself and i had to
07:52deal
07:52that deal with that a lot look i wasn't a first round pick i didn't make it to the super
07:56bowl i was
07:56fighting and clawing every opportunity i got and and the moment things started to take a turn you you
08:02start to sit there and say hold on a second am i the guy who's earned the right to be
08:06the starting
08:06quarterback or am i the guy that's been cut by bill belichick twice am i the guy that was undrafted
08:11and i think there is the human element there and and the one thing you would say about drake and
08:15he's always kind of had this quiet confidence i don't think that he is he is in that space yet
08:20i think
08:21it's just going to take one of these days where he goes out and has you know the 320 yard
08:26three
08:27touchdown performance maybe he runs one in and it just shakes off a little bit of that rust that's
08:31maybe hanging from that playoff run and super bowl from last season i think that's what you're seeing
08:35and and i'll say this too he's a young player he probably should have played a little bit in the
08:39preseason but you don't want to risk it i think the the the mode now is and you've seen this
08:44around
08:44the league not just with drake but other players as well guys who don't play in the preseason these
08:49first two games are a little bit like those preseason games you haven't played full speed
08:53football in a while and we talked about having great reps in practice but there's nothing that you
08:58can replicate as game speed and game looks and a game plan and doing all of those things and so
09:03i just expect this to to i have too much faith in first of all josh mcdaniels and mike rabel
09:09but i
09:10have too much faith in the kid that we saw play last year who came in and you know obviously
09:15had all
09:16this talent but was able to execute and uh i just i just think that it's just not there yet
09:21that's my
09:21biggest thing right now brian if you want to see drake cut it loose is this the week to do

09:25you feel like he matches up with this jaguars defense yeah look i mean the the my the biggest thing

09:31is those three guys up front armstead uh josh heinz allen is it heinz allen or alan heinz i can't
09:36i can never forget i remember heinz allen and uh trayvon walker and so to me i actually think if
09:43you can handle those three and give them the opportunity and i always say the one thing about
09:47going on the road is you want to run the football and so i think if you run the football
09:50early you
09:51stay balanced maybe you hit some of those play action passes i think this is an opportunity for them
09:56to go out and and feel good about it but it's going to start up front look uh greg van

10:05kind of that grisly old veteran who's going to have to step in and and uh help protect drake in
10:10the
10:10pocket but um i do feel like this is a week you know you're going to go down to florida

10:15to be good weather you're going to be able to cut it loose and uh i i think it just
10:19to me is about
10:20getting that confidence back finding the identity i think that's the one thing i would say is
10:24you know you came in thinking this offense is going to be built around aj brown well you don't
10:27have him for five weeks you gotta you gotta you gotta you know shift the narrative there is eli
10:31raritan going to be back can you be in 12 personnel i mean they're dealing with a few things um
10:36as far
10:36as how they're going to game plan this week i did think that going back to the steelers game there
10:42was some vintage patriots you know using personnel to put the steelers in bad positions putting 21
10:48personnel out there and going to empty and hitting pop douglas on the famous hoss juke play like
10:52the the first uh corner corner out to hunter henry you know put out 12 personnel know that
10:57they're in man coverage block it up and give him a two-way go so they are they're dialing up

11:03according to the defenses they're playing and so this has got to be about dialing into what the
11:07jaguars do and attacking them accordingly there was this great viral video that was resurfaced that
11:14somehow had escaped i think all of our uh sites which was following the incredible comeback win
11:20in overtime against the uh chiefs could you give us some of the behind the scenes there of what that
11:26moment was like and how that measured up to other wins that you were able to be a part of
11:30yeah that was so cool to see that because um i had never seen it before i i'm assuming this
11:34is the
11:34first time it ever came out and first thing that came to mind i'm like how did i not notice
11:38the guy
11:38with the camera is this like you know was this like a hidden camera like a ballpoint pen in his
11:42pocket or
11:43but it was it actually and and and just to um be able to reminisce that that moment and that
11:50game
11:51if you ask anybody now i know a lot of those guys that were on that that team were part
11:56of that 28 to
11:57three comeback but anyone i've ever talked to that was part of that game has always said it's one of
12:01the top moments of their career and i know for me it was it was just one of those moments
12:05where
12:06everybody you see in that room whether it's the players the coaches the training staff the meal staff
12:11um the the chiropractors are in there i'm laughing i'm seeing hari one of our chiropractors in there
12:16like it was us against everybody else it was the cold it was the kansas city chiefs fans it was
12:22the
12:22arrowhead stadium the whole world wanted the chiefs to move you know they wanted to to knock the
12:26patriots off and to come back in the locker room after the way that game was played just to see
12:32the
12:32elation on everybody and the the love and the family of of what that what that team was it really
12:39it
12:39gave me goosebumps because you you remember it in your mind and then you get to see it from a
12:44different perspective and it was just it was truly incredible one of the best nights of my career by far

13:03to say i feel a little bit better about this i didn't like the way you know jacksonville looked
13:07against denver i remember that was their big coming out party last year it was going up to
13:10denver and beating them um i know they kind of held a lead for a while but that to me
13:14was was more
13:15because of what the denver broncos were not doing um look they're they're well coached liam cohen
13:20new england guy he's got the offense going parker washington our old friend jacoby myers trevor lawrence
13:25i think can be one of those guys who either you know has a great game or puts the other
13:29team in
13:30position to have a good game so i think with the pressure and we didn't talk about the defense at
13:34all
13:34which you know i'm a quarterback guy we're talking about the quarterbacks the the patriots defense
13:38through two games has been uh phenomenal i think with that course pressure package they're going to
13:43put some heat on on trevor lawrence try to force him into a few turnovers so i do think the
13:47patriots
13:48can win i i was thinking you know more of a lower scoring game maybe like 24 21 uh but
13:53i i do think
13:54that they need to get things right offensively and when they do pair that with the defense and they're
13:58going to win a lot of ball games all right brian we'll talk to you next week thanks bud all
