How much of a factor will RUST be? No preseason games for Drake Maye, no game since February, what should we expect from the QB? Former Patriots QB Brian Hoyer joins!
Transcript
00:00um we were talking earlier about sam darnold and a new coordinator and you have dealt with that
00:08during your career what what's your guess when it comes to kind of a uh what what he brings uh
00:15scheme wise and the the difference for sam darnold and does he struggle with that a bit
00:20first few weeks of the season yeah look i think this is one of the kind of most underrated factors
00:26going in this game is the seahawks lost clink kubiak and he's a great uh obviously offensive
00:31coordinator now the head coach and brian flurry who was in san francisco when i was there he comes
00:36from that long line of west coast offense play callers but the reality is it's his first time
00:40calling plays and sam darnold uh is going to be the first time out there and i think he's got
00:45to
00:45take more ownership over the offense and uh get in the rhythm and the thing that i think you know
00:50going back to that super bowl that the patriots have to do is they have to stop the run early
00:54and force sam darnold to drop back and pass a little bit more than he did in the super bowl
00:58so
00:58it's definitely tough um you know it's going to be a similar system but you got to build that
01:03relationship with the play caller and you got to really as a quarterback you know tell him what
01:07you like what plays you don't like and and be honest with them so my guess is with sam uh
01:12you know
01:12now a super bowl champion a veteran he's going to have more control this year than he did last year
01:17uh brian i i played in seattle one of the loudest stadiums i've ever played in take us in uh
01:22into the mind of the quarterback because there's so much communication for drake may and when you're
01:29playing in a place that's so loud and you're the quarterback and you got to make sure the the rest
01:33of the guys are on the same page what are some of the things that he has to do well
01:38or what are some
01:38of the things that maybe you're thinking about heading into an environment like that from the
01:42quarterback's position yeah you're right wiggy funny enough the last time the patriots played in
01:47seattle i was there during covet and there were no fans in the stands so you didn't have to worry
01:51about it but uh you're right you have to just in the huddle clearly communicate there's going to be
01:56hand signals that are going to be used and really the biggest thing is if you can stay ahead and
02:01down
02:01and distance and keep them out of third down that's really when that crowd really starts to take off and
02:06so i think the patriots plan has to be stay ahead and down the distance you know take easy completions
02:12move the ball get some easy manageable third downs which they started to get at the end of the super
02:17bowl but you're right uh he's going to have to scream some of those play calls there's going to
02:21have to be over communication well you know like the tight ends might be touching each other just
02:25you know to make sure that they get off the line at the same time there's going to be that
02:29factor
02:30you're going to have to use the silent cadence which you know hopefully they've been practicing that i
02:34know that they've they blast the music in practice for away games so uh the one thing that i would
02:39say
02:39is you have a lot of continuity along the offense obviously you're bringing in vera tucker but
02:44everybody else has played together as a unit they understand how that works and so i think when
02:48you bring in a guy who's a veteran you know to put in between will campbell and jared wilson uh
02:53those
02:54things shouldn't be an issue tonight brian that was actually famously the night that wiggy said cam
02:59newton should get 30 million a year that was a hell of a performance by cam that night there's no
03:05doubt
03:05about that i think element had like 200 yards receiving but uh the entering tonight how much of a
03:11factor will rust be i know that'll be an easy second guess if drake may in the offense goes
03:16enters the season slow after not playing in the preseason you said rest rust rust rust yeah i mean
03:23look the reality is as i just mentioned and we talked about this you know david anderson i talked
03:28about this yesterday the reality is is the patriots have so much continuity and if you look at really
03:33the newcomers that are going to play they're all veteran players who have played a lot of football
03:37vera tucker aj brown romeo dobbs kevin byard uh you know draymond jones these are the guys that
03:43they brought in it's a bunch of veterans you're not really relying on rookies that are going to
03:47have to make big uh impacts tonight as as opposed to the seahawks they're gonna look everything starts
03:53at the run for them they are going to put everything on the shoulders of a rookie running back and
03:57basically say this is our bell cow tonight i don't think you'd want to be in that position on
04:01opening night so uh rust i i think the one thing that i saw at least go into joint practices
04:07the
04:07starters got a lot of quality reps against really good defenses and in the colts and the eagles so
04:13i could see you know both teams kind of feeling their way out in the first quarter and then once
04:18they get back into playing it's football and then the re the real uh question will be who's in better
04:23shape because none of these players have as you mentioned have played in a preseason game uh but to
04:28go the distance the first time out there who's going to be in better condition come the fourth
04:32quarter brian how much if at all does travion henderson being out change the pats game plan for
04:38tonight yeah well i think look you lose a little bit of the explosiveness in the run game and so
04:42you're going to have to be a little more methodical as far as you know extending drives maybe now you
04:48don't have the home run threat in the run game and so you're going to have to and this has
04:51always
04:52been josh's forte josh mcdaniel's is to have those 10 11 play drives where you know it's a
04:58four yard gain it's a seven yard gain it's a nine yard gain it's a three yard gain and just
05:02trying to stay ahead of the chains because you don't have that home run threat in the backfield
05:06so um it will be interesting to see you know how they make up for that explosiveness is it
05:11kyle williams on a speed sweep that like there's other players you can get involved with their speed
05:16to try to make up for it in the twitch chat brian they are calling your football iq off the
05:24charts it is
05:24so far this morning which is well i mean really we need that on this program thank god we got
05:30it
05:30right no offense when you play for 15 years and you play in basically every offense that's ever
05:36been created in the nfl and you see all these defenses it's just i'm glad that i have an outlet
05:41now to you know be able to share that knowledge and and uh it's it's so much i mean look
05:45i could
05:46sit here and talk to you guys for three hours i love talking football i'm i'm excited this morning
05:50because football's back and it just so happens that we get to watch the patriots on opening night
05:54can can you stand by for a moment or two while we take a brief break because i got a
05:59lot i got a lot
06:00more i got a lot more to ask you so brian hoyer on tonight's start of the nfl season continues
06:06next
06:06i i brought up josh mcdaniels briefly earlier this morning brian and he said after that super bowl loss
06:14that it was on him and he didn't do a good enough job and uh seattle out everything uh the
06:22patriots
06:23in that game so you look at uh what what he needs to do well or what can he do
06:30when it comes to figure
06:31out ways to beat some of those uh pressure schemes from the seahawks yeah i thought that was big of
06:37of josh and and to go up there and basically say i got it i i had to do a
06:41better job and it starts with
06:43me i mean to me it shows the leadership but it also there's a little bit of to me an
06:47underlying
06:48of i i feel good about this one i learned a lot from what they did and and the thing
06:53you got to
06:53remember about the seahawks and and they were they had this great pass rush but they weren't really
06:58blitzing a lot well they came out in the super bowl and crafted up a few uh let's call them
07:02exotic
07:03pressures that kind of caught the patriots off guard and i think that's the one thing going into this
07:07game that they're going to say listen we can't get lulled to sleep by the statistics and say that
07:12they're not going to blitz because they did and and they kind of caught us off guard i mean the
07:15one
07:16uh which was the strip sack fumble for the touchdown was a pressure that they didn't bring a lot and
07:21all
07:22of a sudden they're bringing two over the back and you got to throw a side adjust and so i
07:26think there
07:26was a learning process not only for josh but for drake and the entire offense to say look we know
07:32what
07:32the scouting report says but they get a vote too and they can change what they want to do and
07:36it kind
07:36of hurt us a little bit so they're going to go in you know making sure that they have those
07:39things uh ready
07:40to go because any good defense if if they hit you on something or they see someone else hit you
07:45on
07:45something they're going to test it and to see if you got it figured out so i would expect the
07:49seahawks
07:50to bring maybe a pressure too early and the patriots just have to have the answer for it uh but
07:55i i do
07:56think it was a it was a great learning experience for josh and drake together right i think that's the
08:01big thing uh they're going to go in with a plan that's make sure they take care of some of
08:06those
08:06things that maybe statistically the seahawks weren't uh known to do as much and and ultimately
08:11i think the one thing that you're going to see is what hurt them in the super bowl was they'd
08:15have a
08:16good player too but then they'd go backwards and i think that's been the emphasis probably all off
08:19season guys if we go backwards against a good defense like like the seattle defense the drive's
08:25basically over so when we get a good play make sure the next one at least is going forward our
08:29worst
08:29case scenario is zero yards because when you go backwards against seattle it becomes so hard to try
08:35to eventually convert that third down when you're in third and long brian you were um and houston in
08:412015 and had d hop talk about what what it's going to be like for drake may to have an
08:47elite wide
08:48receiver like aj brown yeah i mean first and foremost what aj brings is just the true number one alpha
08:55dog
08:55mentality and you saw that in training camp i mean i was there the first day with philly and you
08:59could
09:00tell there was just a different edge about him and what he brought not only you know to to
09:05uh with for drake but for the entire room and you see that the rest of the room elevate themselves
09:10as well and it's going to create opportunities for other players and the one thing that i can't
09:14wait to see and no one's really seen it because the starters didn't play in the preseason not they
09:18would show it anyways i think aj brown is going to be used in a way that he's never been
09:24used before
09:24in a josh mcdaniel scheme and and it kind of goes back to my time in las vegas when we
09:29had davante
09:30adams and we had jacoby myers and so to me i look at this version of the patriots offense
09:34is going to have aj brown and romeo dobbs are going to be those two kind of key cogs
09:39and they both do different things and i think aj brown is predominantly always lined up outside at x
09:44and he's run you know he's really run a simple route tree goes hitches under slants i think we're
09:50going to see an aj brown that is going to line up all over the formation he's going to be
09:54in motion
09:54um and and it's going to allow him to actually pull out another part of his game that no one's
10:00really seen before it's just that's what a josh mcdaniel's offense does it takes that prototypical
10:05x that started with randy moss right in 07 randy always lined up outside now he's inside he's running
10:10these deep uh routes on safeties or on nickel corners and and i think you saw that with davante
10:15adams and his first year with josh out in vegas i mean it was one of the best seasons of
10:19his career so
10:20i would expect that from aj brown and i think it just elevates the entire offense because he
10:24is going to draw attention and now you have this plethora of receivers all very different skills
10:29but also the tight ends and even the running backs in the in the past game so it's just one
10:34of those
10:34guys he just the defense has to fear him and because of that it changes their game plan accordingly
10:40they didn't have that last year i mean stefan diggs had a great season but i don't think
10:44defenses fears stefan diggs the way that they're going to fear aj brown brian we've talked aj brown
10:49we've talked josh mcdaniels but drake specifically what do you need to see out of him tonight and how much
10:53can you really learn about a quarterback in the first game yeah i mean i think for him it's just
10:58the confidence and and having been at practice having talked to him a little bit in in pregame
11:02i know he wasn't playing but you can just feel the confidence coming off of him and and the one
11:07thing
11:07you would say last year at this point going into the first game it was his first season with josh
11:11mcdaniel so you really didn't know i mean i knew it was going to be good but the growth that
11:16he showed
11:16last year was tremendous and honestly i i've been the one to say i think after a full year of
11:21playing in
11:22the system under his belt of meeting with josh every day a full off season now going into it
11:26i actually think there's a bigger chance for a a leap that's greater than what it was from rookie year
11:33to last year just because of the knowledge that he has going into the season so i think you're going
11:36to see a quarterback who is in total control he's going to be able to get in and out of
11:41plays
11:41if he sees the defense doing something he doesn't like and i think at to be able to do that
11:46at 24 years
11:47old it will be very impressive and i think that's just that's the next step that he's got to take
11:51and and i think he's probably ready to do that chime has asked for permission to go all 22 super
11:57nerd
11:57with a question this morning so all right go go ahead so uh brian last year drake struggled against
12:03cover six uh quite mightily actually he was 32nd or 32nd out of 33 quarterbacks in epa per drop back
12:10against cover six his explosive rate plummeted from what we know it to be fantastic i think it was over
12:1520
12:15percent dropped like right around five percent against cover six would you expect that to continue
12:21and stifle him a bit this year or do you expect drake to take a step in the right direction
12:25grow
12:25against this and figure out a way to attack it yeah i remember talking about this a little bit
12:30last year and sometimes you know cover six or we could call it quarter quarter half um is the best
12:34way to put it it it really depends on what you have called and that's not something you're going
12:39to audible a playoff of is coverage you you may change a play because of a pressure look or a
12:43front
12:43but you really are never changing it off of coverage unless it's maybe you know it's man
12:48coverage that's the one i would say you could get to a different play and so when you get that
12:51quarter
12:52quarter half that is designed to take away the explosive plays that's why they started playing
12:56it and ultimately what i would like to see is if anything and you see that too high shell and
13:01this
13:01is the beauty of josh mithana's offense just we get to a run play the best play against quarter
13:07quarter half is a run um when you get those quarter quarter half and sometimes they're playing it the
13:11quarters to the field sometimes they're playing it to the boundary and then they flip it it's always
13:15hard to kind of get the right concept called that can that can beat that so to me if you
13:20start to
13:20see those two high shells i would imagine this year drake with the autonomy easy let's get to a run
13:26make the safeties come down and that's when we'll take those explosive shots now there's certain
13:30concepts that you can run that beat quarter quarter half but you have to be able to formation those you
13:35have to be able to get a little bit of that the the tell so to speak to be able
13:39to get to those so
13:39i don't think it's so much a specific coverage thing it's it's making sure that when you get
13:44that coverage you just get the right play and taking the check down against quarter quarter half
13:48is always the best play because you don't want to force it down the field brian we've been talking
13:53about this i know you're not unbiased as a michigan state guy but how would you uh handle the botched
14:00ending of the western michigan michigan game do you think oh my god there's a push now to say that
14:06western michigan should have the win what what would you do if you were in charge of the big
14:11ten and the mac uh if i'm the mac i'm just going to give western michigan the win i don't
14:16care what
14:16the big ten says that was absolutely ridiculous now i do know having played that sometimes the
14:21clock being kept on the field always doesn't align with what we see on tv you know i've seen that
14:26before but it just seems so ridiculous the one thing i would say they still had to complete the
14:31hill mary on the next play so the odds were still low but i do think you know of course
14:35typical
14:36michigan uh fashion always trying to get like a little bit of extra edge to to walk away with the
14:41win and the one thing i would say if that's what you need to beat western michigan it's probably going
14:46to be a long year for the wolverines all right who do you like tonight i i like the patriots
14:53i really
14:53do i think um you know the the pressure is on seattle they're at home they're they're the defending
14:58champs they're raising the banner i think they've stayed the same i think the patriots have gotten
15:02better and i think ultimately the the seahawks are going in tonight at least offensively putting
15:07everything on the shoulders of their rookie running back because everything with them starts at the run
15:11game so i think the patriots come out i think they've been waiting to play this game a long time
15:15and uh there was a lot of confidence about them at least when i saw from the joint practices so
15:20i think
15:21that they can go in there and win this one well it is awesome to have you on well we
15:25will have you on
15:26all season long every wednesday high football iq brian hoyer where else would we talk cover six oh
15:33yeah no well that's on chime um so thanks for taking the time we'll talk to you again next week
15:41all right all right guys see you next week all right that is brian hoyer
