00:00:01Monza, 1954.
00:00:03I was out there looking through the leaves
00:00:06somewhere with my brother Aldo.
00:00:08It's actually the first big race,
00:00:11the first Grand Prix that I had ever witnessed.
00:00:16And now, 50 years later,
00:00:18Monza will again come alive to the sights and sounds
00:00:20of modern Grand Prix racing.
00:00:22What memory of Monza will we be talking about
00:00:24for the next 50 years?
00:00:26Qualifying for the Italian Grand Prix is next.
00:00:31.
00:00:54Officially it is the Autotrovo Nazionale di Monza,
00:00:57But to the loyal Ferrari fans around the world, it is La Pista Magica, the magic track.
00:01:03Welcome to Monza, just outside Milan, Italy.
00:01:06And the all-important final qualifying to set the grid for round 15 of the Formula One World Championship for
00:01:122004, the Italian Grand Prix.
00:01:14Hello, everyone. Welcome to Speed Channel's coverage of qualifying for the Italian Grand Prix.
00:01:19I'm Bob Varscia. Joining me, as always, David Hobbs and Steve Matchett.
00:01:23A beautiful day, despite a forbidding weather forecast, great conditions for qualifying to set the grid for tomorrow's race.
00:01:31As always, the first round of single-car, single-lap runs has been completed.
00:01:35And let's take a look at those highlights.
00:01:38Of course, this being Monza, Ferrari's home track, Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barichello are the stars.
00:01:43But the seven-time world champion and his teammate were upstaged.
00:01:48First on track, Kimi Raikkonen, the winner two weeks ago in Belgium.
00:01:52And he posted a pretty stout first attempt.
00:01:56Next on track, Michael Schumacher, who came up well short of his rival.
00:02:01In fact, at the end of the session, Michael was no better than ninth.
00:02:07Giancarlo Fischichella in the south where the Ferrari engine went out.
00:02:11Got a first place.
00:02:12Took it away from Schumacher and Raikkonen.
00:02:14He ended up in sixth place.
00:02:16Nick Heidfeld went out and right through the chicane.
00:02:19Very first time, major gearbox problems of some sort.
00:02:24Then Montoya went out in the Williams BMW poll here four years ago.
00:02:29And there's Frank Williams signaling some joy for a change as Montoya took first then and stayed on top.
00:02:35And then his teammate, Antonio Pisonia, in the sister FW26.
00:02:40He couldn't better his teammate, but he finished second.
00:02:43And then Jenson Button out in the BAR, the 006.
00:02:46He would finish fourth in that session.
00:02:48Good time from him, 19.8.
00:02:51And then in the Renault, the R24, Fernando Alonso.
00:02:54Best he could do that session in the first session, he would finish fifth with a 20.341.
00:03:00The only real heavy hitter with a shot at pole, Takuma Sato.
00:03:04Honda has a new spec engine for the Italian Grand Prix, but it was not enough.
00:03:08Sato finished third, much to the delight of his fans in the grandstands.
00:03:13And copper glasses are hardly needed here at Monza, where you can get very close to this historic racetrack.
00:03:19So this will be the running order, slowest to quickest, or in Nick Heidfeld's case, DNF to the quickest car
00:03:27of Juan Pablo Montoya
00:03:30in the runs that will set the grid for tomorrow's race.
00:03:34It's hard to tell if Heidfeld's even going to bother with a run, because they changed the engine the other
00:03:38day anyway,
00:03:38so whatever happens, he's going to lose ten places.
00:03:39That's right, he blew up in yesterday's practice session, so he would lose ten places no matter how fast he
00:03:44went.
00:03:44So we suspect we will not see Heidfeld's Jordan on track.
00:03:48The last run of the day is going to be Juan Pablo Montoya.
00:03:51I said he'd been on the pole four years ago.
00:03:53Of course, he's been on the pole twice here in 0-1 and 0-2, and he was on the
00:03:56front row last year,
00:03:57so his qualifying here is pretty stout.
00:04:01Take a brave man to bet against Juan Pablo Montoya today.
00:04:04That's right.
00:04:05That time, by the way, of a 1-19-5, has got to be up around about the 163-mile
00:04:11-an-hour mark,
00:04:12so he may yet eclipse the record set by Jackie Ix at Belgium many years ago in the Ferrari sports
00:04:20car of 163 miles now.
00:04:22Yeah, those tyres that the Williams are using, the Michelin tyres, are coming up to temperature very quick in that
00:04:27opening lap,
00:04:28and I wouldn't bet against a Michelin runner being on pole here.
00:04:33The Bridgestones are taking a little bit longer to come in.
00:04:35I think in race conditions, the Bridgestones are probably going to be the better tyre,
00:04:38but here in this one-lapse shootout for pole position, Michelin, I think, are going to have the advantage.
00:04:44As you can see, everyone enjoying the biggest weekend of the year here in Monza.
00:04:48While we have a moment, let's check out the Porsche track map of the Monza track with David Alps.
00:04:53Well, there you see it.
00:04:54As you say, the Autodromo Nationality de Monza, one of the longest tracks on their circuit, 3.6 miles,
00:05:0153 laps only for the race, 11 corners.
00:05:03Most of them, as you can see, are right-handers, and most of them pretty fast right-handers.
00:05:07Three, the Curva Grande, the old Curva Grande, six and seven, the Lesmos, very quick.
00:05:10Of course, it's broken up by those chicanes, the Variante Della Roja coming in first,
00:05:14so there's a lot of gear shifting here, very tough on transmissions, very, very hard on brakes.
00:05:18They go from 225 miles an hour down to about 30 miles an hour into turn one there.
00:05:24That's a good overtaking spot, as is into the Variante Della Roja.
00:05:29Variante Ascari down to the Parabolica.
00:05:31The Parabolica down there is a corner where the car takes a lot of load, a long, long, fast corner.
00:05:38Yeah, pretty exciting track, and a lot of overtaking, and a lot of draft it goes on here.
00:05:42Green light.
00:05:43Slip streaming, sorry, Formula One language.
00:05:47You do not see Nick Heidfeld, so we expect the first car on track.
00:05:50Oh, there he is.
00:05:53Quick Nick makes a liar out of me.
00:05:54One thing you didn't see on that track map was the old oval track, which was once used as a
00:06:01part of the race here,
00:06:02and to the best of our research, we believe that our own David Hobbs was the winner in the last
00:06:08race using that oval and road course configuration.
00:06:13It's 1,000 kilometers here in 1968 with the Australian Paul Hawkins.
00:06:18In a Ford GT40.
00:06:21There you see two fans, no doubt, discussing Nick Heidfeld's situation and their personal poll picks.
00:06:28Pick yours.
00:06:28We have a fairly jumbled starting order.
00:06:31Ferrari may not be the horse to bet on here.
00:06:33We'll find out.
00:06:34Stay with us.
00:06:36The Italian Grand Prix track map is brought to you by Porsche.
00:06:40Porsche, there is no substitute.
00:06:47Welcome back to Monza, Italy, and qualifying for the Formula One Italian Grand Prix here on Speed Channel.
00:06:52This is Nick Heidfeld, who has had an absolutely brutal weekend thus far for Jordan,
00:06:58with an engine failure in Friday practice, and then a gearbox failure on his opening lap of qualifying.
00:07:05Didn't really see what the problem was with the transmission in that first session,
00:07:09but just coming down from the start-finish straight into that Prima Variante, the first chicane there,
00:07:15started to change down and went down.
00:07:16Seemed to go down about seven gears, didn't he, and then nothing at all.
00:07:20And then towards the end of that lap, we didn't see much of it, but he started to speed up
00:07:24again,
00:07:24so whatever it was, sort of sorted itself out, and it couldn't have been that bad,
00:07:28because this all only happened about 45 minutes ago, and they've obviously got it fixed now, up to pace.
00:07:34Kind of makes you think it would have to be an electronics problem as opposed to hydraulics,
00:07:38because the change was very quick.
00:07:40If it was a hydraulics leaks on the car, the transmission wouldn't have come back to life halfway around the
00:07:44lap.
00:07:44Once you lose the fluid, it's game over, but an electronics fault could well have switched back in.
00:07:51Here's that long run down this very fast straight into the Parabolica.
00:07:56It breaks so late for this now.
00:08:01Tremendous G-force through there.
00:08:10122.301.
00:08:11That's by far Nick Heidfeld's best lap of the weekend,
00:08:14so perhaps he should have been in the T-car the whole weekend.
00:08:18But Olivier Bannis is the last man in the 22s in the first round of single lap qualifying,
00:08:23did a 22.169, so I don't think that time is going to stand up for pole.
00:08:30It's been a very, very tough season for Heidfeld,
00:08:33who suggests he'll probably be back with Jordan next year,
00:08:36but for a guy who was once considered a coming man of Formula One,
00:08:38it has been a bitter pill.
00:08:40Oh, yeah, after winning his Formula 3000 championship.
00:08:44Oh, Zoltbaum Gardner gets it all wrong down in turns one and two.
00:08:48Boy, but he was quick through the speed trap at 350 clicks.
00:08:51That matched Zonta's time from the first session.
00:08:54That's 217 miles an hour through the speed trap going down to that first.
00:08:58Back on Friday, he matched Rubens Barichello's Ferrari for top speed in the speed trap
00:09:03at 224.1 miles an hour.
00:09:06That's surprising, I must say.
00:09:07I mean, certainly the Cosworth engine's got a lot of grunt,
00:09:10but they are using what is effectively last year's engine detuned slightly
00:09:14to be able to get them through this one engine for Grand Prix rule.
00:09:17They just dropped the compression ratios a little bit and reworked the heads,
00:09:20but that's flying.
00:09:23This is a return trip to Monza in a Formula One car.
00:09:27He replaced Ralph Furman last year in the Jordan.
00:09:31One of only two tracks that Zoltbaum Gardner had previous knowledge of
00:09:35in a Formula One car.
00:09:36The other being his home track, the Hungarrow ring.
00:09:43This is a long stretch, isn't it?
00:09:47Heavy braking.
00:09:50Really wide line through here.
00:09:52Leaving black rubber there going through the Parabolica.
00:09:55Hmm.
00:09:56Of course, not carrying any wing, which is why the car's so quick in a straight line.
00:09:58Right, absolutely.
00:10:00But he will have his race fuel load on board.
00:10:03So there is the effort for Baumgartner.
00:10:06Next up will be his teammate, Gianmaria Bruni,
00:10:08who was a lot quicker in the Minardi in the first qualifying.
00:10:15Welcome back.
00:10:16Final qualifying for the Italian Grand Prix.
00:10:18This is Jimmy Bruni in the Minardi.
00:10:20Doing a better job of it through the first chicane
00:10:23than his teammate, Zolt Baumgartner, did.
00:10:26Nick Heidfeld is the provisional pole sitter for Jordan.
00:10:29But Bruni is just the third car on track.
00:10:32That's possibly one reason why his teammate Baumgartner was so quick
00:10:36bopped through the speed trap.
00:10:37He was just going too fast to be able to break up for that first chicane.
00:10:41Yeah, the guy's got no downforce either.
00:10:42Got every bit of wing cranked out of the thing.
00:10:45Catches a lot of the drivers out really around here
00:10:47running that low downforce configuration.
00:10:49They should be with it by now.
00:10:51But of course, just lifting off the throttle,
00:10:52you get such a lot of drag when you're running full downforce on these cars.
00:10:56That helps an awful lot with the braking
00:10:58prior to actually stamping on the brake pedal.
00:11:00But in this configuration, the cars are very nervous,
00:11:03very highly strung.
00:11:12We're in there,
00:11:14about 17 and a half, the Honda.
00:11:16We've been seeing up very close to 19.
00:11:3424-9-4-0.
00:11:35So he too has a lot of fuel on board.
00:11:37His previous best of the weekend was a 23-7-9-4
00:11:41and slower than Baumgartner.
00:11:45Which is not what he should be.
00:11:46No, I take that back.
00:11:47He's not.
00:11:49Wait a minute.
00:11:50Yes, he is.
00:11:52Slower than Baumgartner,
00:11:53even with that mistake down in one.
00:11:57But you're right, Bob.
00:11:58The cars are carrying a lot of fuel around here.
00:12:01Traditionally, this is a two-stop race.
00:12:03Last year, I don't think anybody at all
00:12:05attempted to do a three-stop strategy.
00:12:07So a lot of fuel on board.
00:12:09Of course, that's the same for everybody.
00:12:10So the comparison should remain the same.
00:12:12Fuel consumption between the different engines is negligible, frankly.
00:12:15So the fuel load will be comparable between the cars.
00:12:19But they are quite heavy.
00:12:19This is Giorgio Pantano racing on one of his two home tracks in Formula One
00:12:26as an Italian.
00:12:26Of course, Imola, Italy, side of the San Marino Grand Prix
00:12:30is also a home race for Pantano.
00:12:32He and Baumgartner had a coming together in this morning's practice session.
00:12:35Pantano lost control at Turn 1,
00:12:37spun into the Hungarian,
00:12:39taking them both out before they could complete a lap.
00:12:42See how nervous again the front end of the Jordan Chassis.
00:12:46Oh, boy.
00:12:47It's unbelievable.
00:12:48Yeah, they've not been on the case with that car from the go-get.
00:12:52And really, I think it's just a matter of it.
00:12:54They haven't had the money.
00:12:55They haven't developed the car.
00:12:57An easy way solution, as we were saying yesterday
00:13:00in the practice show, would be to just crank more wing on.
00:13:02But you can't sacrifice the straight line speed.
00:13:04You'll be so far off the pace,
00:13:06despite the fact the car would be more stable
00:13:09and controlled through the chicanes in the corners.
00:13:11No!
00:13:13I see what you mean about controls in the corners there.
00:13:16But Giorgio Pantano, of course, trying very, very hard.
00:13:19Born in Padua.
00:13:21So...
00:13:21Here it is again.
00:13:22It's under-breaking, it does that.
00:13:23It's all seen to jump to the front end.
00:13:24It's when he...
00:13:25Whoa!
00:13:27Goes way...
00:13:28Oh, Lord.
00:13:28Love it.
00:13:29Goes way wide.
00:13:30They see the twitch terribly.
00:13:32It all seems to come in the front to me, but...
00:13:3423.239.
00:13:36That's better than he did in his opening lap.
00:13:42Whoops.
00:13:43Gets back to that car balance thing we were talking about yesterday.
00:13:48Well, the weight transfer of the ballast.
00:13:50Mm-hmm.
00:13:53That has become the major point of engineering on the cars these days.
00:13:57The engineers used to talk in terms of balancing the car front to wheel with wing
00:14:01and then roll stiffness and chassis stiffness.
00:14:04Now about 60% of the balance of the car comes from shifting that ballast,
00:14:07which could be as much as 200 pounds, like the top teams,
00:14:11front and aft along the longitudinal center line of the car.
00:14:14Here's Olivier Panis, who just turned 38 years old.
00:14:19Oldest man in Formula One.
00:14:21And this weekend he has announced he is retiring as a racing driver at the end of the year,
00:14:25though he will stay on with Toyota to test.
00:14:29Had a vibration in Friday practice.
00:14:32Was very slow.
00:14:33Here he is ahead of Nick Heidfeld's first sector time for provisional pole.
00:14:38The Mike Gascoigne wonder car, which does not seem to be performing that wonderfully.
00:14:42No.
00:14:43They've got a lot of horsepower.
00:14:45Everybody acknowledges that from that Toyota engine.
00:14:47That allows them to run a little bit more wing on the back.
00:14:49Look at that.
00:14:49You see the profile, a little bit more element exposed to the airflow
00:14:52to keep the car stable under braking and through this corner right here.
00:14:58But, again, you crank wing on, you take straight line speed off the car.
00:15:04But as you said, they can do that.
00:15:05They've got a lot of horsepower coming out of that Toyota engine.
00:15:13Aerodynamics, as I'll always tell you, you know, the performance of the car these days is about 98% aerodynamics.
00:15:18But I still say there ain't no substitute for grunt out of that lump, is there?
00:15:23You've got an abundance of horsepower and good enough for Palace there, 121.841 to go provisional pole.
00:15:28You get an abundance of horsepower, you can mask all sorts of problems with the chassis just by cranking more
00:15:34wing on
00:15:34and allowing the horsepower to drive it through the drag, restrictive drag on the car because of the airflow.
00:15:42Well, the 121.8 is a good bit quicker than he went in the first single lap qualifying just a
00:15:47few minutes ago.
00:15:48Equals his teammates' time.
00:15:50Ricciardo's on to the 21.8.
00:15:54As I look in the Ferrari garage, it's all hands on deck for Ferrari this weekend.
00:15:58They have a grandstand devoted to their factory employees so that everyone can come out and celebrate
00:16:04both the Constructors' and Drivers' Championships, which they've already clinched.
00:16:10We can do some racing line comparisons.
00:16:14And while our hosts from Italian television take a short break, so will we.
00:16:20Christian Kling will be on track in the Jaguar when we return to final qualifying for the Italian Grand Prix.
00:16:31Speed Channel's coverage of the FIA Formula One World Championship is brought to you by BMW.
00:16:36BMW, the ultimate driving machine.
00:16:42Welcome back.
00:16:43Enjoying some of the highlights of the first five runs in this final qualifying session for the Italian Grand Prix.
00:16:49Coming up live Sunday morning, beginning at 7.30 a.m. Eastern on Speed Channel.
00:16:54I'm Bob Varsha with Steve Matchett, David Hobbs.
00:16:58Some super slow-mo corner entry comparisons.
00:17:03As we discussed yesterday in practice, watch the way these tires grip and release over those rumble strips.
00:17:09Those curbs here are pretty stout, but everybody use them.
00:17:13Flavio Briatore, team manager of Jano Trulli and Fernando Alonso.
00:17:17Alonso did a pretty good time this morning in single lap qualifying.
00:17:21Ended up fifth.
00:17:24They had a good test here, too, a couple of weeks ago.
00:17:27They were one of the fastest cars here, even though the Renault is reputed to not have that much horsepower.
00:17:34Yeah, they had a good test.
00:17:35They were working a lot, actually, on engine development work.
00:17:39Remember Alonso's problems he had in Spa last race, where we saw him, the rear end of the car kept
00:17:44breaking away just before he pulled off to the side of the track.
00:17:47He put that down to O-ring failure on the oil pump and the fact that the oil was pumping
00:17:52out all over his rear tires.
00:17:54And the problem, they said, was, as we were saying all through the race, it was the huge compression loads
00:17:59going through Eau Rouge that just started to flex the transmission and the engine and the oil pump.
00:18:04And the O-ring popped out.
00:18:05And the O-ring just flexed a little bit.
00:18:08I won't say it popped out, but it flexes a little bit.
00:18:10Because what the teams have started to do now to lower the mass of the engines to keep the weight
00:18:14down as much as possible,
00:18:15all those internal castings they used to have inside Formula One engines have gone away now.
00:18:19And they tend to use carbon fiber lightweight pipes on the outside of the casting to make it lighter.
00:18:25Once you put pipes on the outside, of course, you've got to seal them with something.
00:18:28Those little jelly O-rings just flex a little bit too much on Alonso's car.
00:18:33They say they're on it now.
00:18:34They've got it sorted.
00:18:35We understand there's a bit of a discussion among the officials over Zolt Baumgartner's lap.
00:18:40And that led to the extended delay before Christian Kline took to the racetrack.
00:18:46But here he is.
00:18:47What, do they think they're going over the chicane with some sort of infraction?
00:18:50Well, I'm wondering.
00:18:51I have no clue.
00:18:53This is Formula One and this is Italy.
00:18:55Don't feel like a low-range, Bob, nor have they.
00:18:57So don't worry about it.
00:18:59The double whammy.
00:19:00Formula One in Italy.
00:19:02Steady.
00:19:04Lesmo one.
00:19:04Here comes Lesmo two.
00:19:06As a rule, if you mess up the first corner of the Lesmos, you're bound to mess up the second
00:19:10one.
00:19:10We've seen Michael Schumacher himself with all four off in the second Lesmo.
00:19:14But as you can see, there's this long straight down to the Ascari chicane complex.
00:19:19So you've really got to make a good job of coming off that second Lesmo.
00:19:22It's a pretty high-speed corner.
00:19:25It was there that the great Alberto Ascari was killed in testing.
00:19:31And that's where Juan Pablo Montoya, in a big Formula One test last week, in his last
00:19:37laps in a test for Williams before moving on to McLaren next year, suffered a suspension
00:19:42failure.
00:19:43Not a good spot.
00:19:4521.989 for Christian Kleen, who goes to P2 behind our provisional pole sitter, Olivier
00:19:50Pannis, in the Toyota.
00:19:54Look at those Michelins taking a pounding over the curbs.
00:20:03And it was the curbs, according to Michelin's best guess, that caused the tire failures we
00:20:09saw two weeks ago at Spa.
00:20:10Christiana de Marta taking to the track now.
00:20:14Ricardo Zonta drove for BAR Honda three years ago and had two absolutely horrendous wings
00:20:21failures.
00:20:22And I think it definitely put him off his stroke for a little bit, but coming back now
00:20:27and doing the best he can, I think, with the Toyota.
00:20:29Zonta suffered an engine failure in Belgium two weeks ago.
00:20:32He's ahead at the first intermediate.
00:20:35With fourth place, he was running fourth.
00:20:37Would have been his best finish in Formula One.
00:20:40And it would have given the team a boost in the Constructors' Championship.
00:20:43They would have moved into seventh ahead of Jaguar.
00:20:46Instead, they are eighth, one point behind the Cats.
00:20:49Yeah, that was terribly disappointing for them.
00:20:50A big major blow-up.
00:20:52They haven't had many engine failures this year.
00:20:53That was a big one.
00:20:56Again, just after Eau Rouge.
00:20:57Probably your oil problem, Steve, again.
00:20:59It could be.
00:21:00As we said yesterday in the practice show, the engineers said they were looking at the
00:21:04telemetry on the car and there was nothing.
00:21:06They couldn't see a blip of anything overheating, pressure dropping, anything.
00:21:09Then just all of a sudden, bang!
00:21:11Kablamma!
00:21:12Absolutely kablamma!
00:21:15Come on, Steve.
00:21:16Don't let us down.
00:21:17As our producer just told me again, Dan Schuette says, I knew it was going to happen because
00:21:21it happened straight after the safety car period.
00:21:23Well, it certainly was very much on the case, but Toyota didn't see it.
00:21:28They run for Zanta, who takes over Provisional Pole, and the Toyota Mechanics take their triumphs
00:21:34where they find them.
00:21:34And that's quicker than he did earlier on, too.
00:21:37So we'll take another break, and the next man on track will be Mark Webber in the other
00:21:41Jaguar, followed, that is, by the first of the Renaults in the hands of Monaco winner
00:21:46Jarno Trulli.
00:21:52Welcome back to the great Monza in Monza, Italy, just outside Milan.
00:21:57Bob Varsha still shuffling maps, along with David Hobbs and Steve Matchett.
00:22:01This is Mark Webber of Australia in the Jaguar.
00:22:04Give it a guy, Mike.
00:22:06See the old Curve of Grandy?
00:22:08When I raced here first, those guardrails weren't there, but the trees were.
00:22:12How exciting it was.
00:22:14He drove with his countryman, Paul Hawkins, in that GT40.
00:22:17I did.
00:22:18How was the banking in 64?
00:22:19Well, it was getting a bit ratty, but so there was a chicane going into it and a chicane
00:22:23going off, so you couldn't actually go flat out all the way around, although obviously
00:22:27we got up to around about 175 on the banking, but it was starting to curve in between the ribs
00:22:33holding it up.
00:22:33If you want to see what it looked like when it was being used, pick up a copy of the
00:22:37John Frankenheimer movie Grand Prix with James Garner.
00:22:41Some beautiful shots of Monza in that movie as well.
00:22:45I'd love to pick up a copy of that movie, Bobber.
00:22:47I don't think it's ever been released on DVD, has it?
00:22:49It hasn't?
00:22:49Not yet.
00:22:50Not yet.
00:22:51Le Mans been released, but the great Grand Prix movie is yet to be released on DVD.
00:22:57That was a great movie in its day.
00:22:59It still is a great movie.
00:23:00That was a fabulous movie.
00:23:00My grandson loves it.
00:23:02He certainly wasn't around when it was made.
00:23:07Wonderful onboard shots for the day.
00:23:09And you'll see a few of your Grand Prix heroes making cameos.
00:23:12Mark Webber pips Olivier Pannis in the other Toyota then.
00:23:21Mark Webber, of course, next year moving to Williams BMW.
00:23:25That is if there is a BMW next year.
00:23:27We're hearing rumors that BMW, Honda, are fighting against the new regulation changes.
00:23:34The principal one being, of course, the change to a 2.4-liter V8 engine.
00:23:39Max Mosley, president of the FIA, held another press conference this weekend,
00:23:43reiterating that those changes will go through.
00:23:46That remains to be seen.
00:23:48Yeah.
00:23:49Renault Trulli coming into the Turn 1 complex.
00:23:52He was a good bit slower than his teammate Alonso in the first round qualifying.
00:23:56Trulli ended up 12th.
00:23:57Alonso is 5th.
00:23:59He has been off the pace.
00:24:00And, Bob, as you rightly said yesterday, Renault have built an entirely,
00:24:04not just the chassis, an entire new car.
00:24:06All the suspension components, all the aerodynamic components,
00:24:10have all absolutely brand new to convince Trulli
00:24:13that there is nothing inherently wrong with the car he had before.
00:24:17Here is a brand new one.
00:24:18They said they stripped the old car down at the spa.
00:24:20It was not a problem.
00:24:22There was nothing loose, nothing broken, nothing fretted.
00:24:24Well, that but mechanics always give you that malarkey.
00:24:26And one of the interesting things was Trulli was a part of the early weekend press conferences.
00:24:32He was told by a journalist that we understand you have a new chassis here.
00:24:35How's that going to help?
00:24:36He said, I do.
00:24:39Well, maybe that speaks volumes.
00:24:42Oh!
00:24:43Trulli just getting a little bit wide there.
00:24:46Pole sitter two weeks ago at spa.
00:24:48This guy does not lack for bravery.
00:24:52And, of course, pole sitter and winner at Monte Carlo earlier on.
00:24:55A fantastic drive.
00:24:57And they rewarded him well by shoving him out.
00:25:00But he hasn't podiumed since then.
00:25:01No.
00:25:03Of course, he would have at France, but here he gets a provisional pole.
00:25:07Flavio Briatore says, I don't know.
00:25:10The 21-0 is about exactly what he did in the first round of qualifying,
00:25:14which doesn't stack up too well against Montoya's 19-5.
00:25:17So, which is why Briatore was giving the old head shake there, I think.
00:25:22And he was quick through that first sector.
00:25:2426 dead for Trulli.
00:25:25Well, all the rest of the runners are 26-4, 26-5, 26-6.
00:25:29I mean, he's taken over half a second out of the field so far
00:25:32through the first sector of the track.
00:25:34Here's our Philip Massa.
00:25:38Finished 11th after the end of the first single lap qualifying.
00:25:43Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
00:25:44That screwed that one up.
00:25:46Big time.
00:25:46Ooh, lost a lot of time there.
00:25:47A lot of time.
00:25:49361 for Massa.
00:25:50I think that's the fastest speed track time of the day.
00:25:54361K.
00:25:55That must be 220-ish.
00:25:58224.
00:26:00I'm going for the calculator at every opportunity.
00:26:02Yesterday, we were talking about how it was revealed
00:26:04recently that Ferrari's transmission
00:26:08hydraulically shifts
00:26:09at the rate of 10 milliseconds
00:26:11for a shift.
00:26:14we ventured that that meant you could shift 10 times in a second well an alert listener
00:26:19david leach up in canada suggested that oh no it means you could shift 100 times in a second
00:26:25yeah well that's that's the maths are right bob but i'm afraid i don't believe that
00:26:31it ain't possible i think probably there's more to this little story this is an it story the
00:26:36it department said that their transmission will shift in that time and i think we have to look
00:26:40at the overall picture and include selector mechanism working and engine cutting in and
00:26:45cutting out clutch mechanism it's just not possible to change that fast the physics won't allow it
00:26:50felipe massive very disappointing that second sector he obviously the first sector we saw
00:26:54happen at the first chicane so ends up six that's not where he wanted to be at all keep those
00:27:01ear
00:27:01plugs in some i'll tell you yeah but he's dreaming suffer well over two seconds slower than he was
00:27:07in the first qualifying ah of course that could mean they're carrying a lot of fuel
00:27:10they do that the sauber people do that a lot they do they'll be testing formula 3000 champion
00:27:17vidantonio liuzzi next thursday in jerez spain and we also understand they are talking with former
00:27:25world champion jack villeneuve now that would be a career move for jack villeneuve to go to sauber
00:27:33i'm not sure which way the career move would be but it would be a move but it would be
00:27:37a move yeah
00:27:38they'd be doing a lot more racing than he's doing right now i'd like to see jack concrete banking that
00:27:43made monza one of the most unique racetracks of all the world we'll be back to it for more qualifying
00:28:00in a moment
00:28:00welcome back to monza i'm beginning to sense the theme our italian director is developing throughout
00:28:06this qualifying session once again here's a look at some of the lines people taking this is in the
00:28:12escari chicane it's a slick slick shot isn't it yeah well you see the difference we talk about drivers
00:28:17being inch perfect and you see a fairly wide spectrum of opinion as to what the proper way to
00:28:24enter that complex is and the man will be coming up in just a few moments rubens barichello his
00:28:29teammate will be going out first of course schumacher the only man to have won at monza four times
00:28:34already obviously looking for his fifth been on the pole here three times front row five times
00:28:43two weeks ago in belgium ferrari powers finished second third fourth and fifth the two factory
00:28:48cars followed by the two saubers that was the best performance by four ferraris since the 1961
00:28:54belgian grand prix when they finished one two three four phil hill wolfgang von trips richie
00:29:01ginther and olivier jean de bien that was luca de montezemolo who now runs the fiat empire
00:29:07after helping jean tott bring ferrari back to prominence in formula one
00:29:13yes you know you've got a performer when the absolute supreme boss is at the side of a track
00:29:19watching you well and the other supreme bosses all the workers are here watching too from the factory
00:29:23which is not that far away marinello
00:29:29and these are the guys the crowd have come to see oh yeah wow now that oh to be slower
00:29:38than truly
00:29:38who didn't exactly set the world on fire i'm beginning to think these bridge stones really
00:29:44do need some time to come up to temperature one lap isn't going to do it for qualifying but
00:29:49it could be a completely different story in the race i think that's exactly what we'll find bob and
00:29:54that was certainly the case towards the closing stages of of spar ferrari absolutely no response
00:30:00at all for mclaren's pace now he's back in the game well quick through the lesmos see that's the
00:30:05handling of the ferrari just and the aerodynamics down that long straight up to that ascari varianti in
00:30:11all the chatter about michael schumacher's seventh world driving championship a point was made and that
00:30:16is that although he of course is the great champion of ferrari this man rubens barriquello is probably
00:30:23the better loved of the ferrari drivers and he goes to p1 by nearly a full second he's a fluent
00:30:31speaker
00:30:32of italian which michael schumacher is not and was not he spoke none of it for the longest time
00:30:38i think he speaks italian now reasonably well he does now i mean that barriquello he is italian he comes
00:30:43from italian yes he has italian parentage yeah even though he's brazilian by nationality a ferrari
00:30:48have a tradition at the launch of their new car that all the staff have to give their speeches
00:30:53in italian so ross braun rory burn oh boy they all have to pick up enough italian to be able
00:30:57to
00:30:57and they use it as a uniting feature to sure to say we've got this multicultural team right here but
00:31:02what unites us is the italian language but when they're talking about suspension setups they use
00:31:06english that's right in the pill absolutely absolutely so there's no confusion there rubens
00:31:11barriquello justifying your point there the first sector he was down the two second sectors he was
00:31:16way up so those bridgestones maybe take this first sector to come up to heat we'll see how michael schumacher
00:31:21does in this first sector that was uh really to finish that point about about spark michelin were very
00:31:29happy they said their tires come up very quick and talking to the renault engineers about uh kimmy
00:31:34reichmann's performance really in closing stages behind that safety car the renault engineers were
00:31:39telling me mcclenn kimmy reichmann was deliberately going extremely slow because the pit wall were
00:31:44telling reichmann cool the tires down as much as possible because that will hamper bridgestone more
00:31:49than yourself and as soon as the safety car period was out of the way those michelins were straight
00:31:53back up to temperature ferrari bridgestone no response for it and afterward ross braun when that
00:31:59very point was pointed out to him he said that's fine that's fair i'd have done the same absolutely
00:32:04of course the same thing that happened to mclaren with ferrari old ron densely well of course
00:32:08those are probably people don't behave very well i don't think yeah schumacher slower on that
00:32:15second sector than his teammate rubens barichello how's he going to go through the parabolica
00:32:19down to the start finish line can he get his teammate
00:32:27no oh half a second slower than barichello
00:32:32well that calls for an investigation
00:32:36that as you could probably tell is not the ferrari grandstand this weekend
00:32:40but there are ferraris at the front with a lot of fast cars still to come king reichmann next
00:32:48welcome back to qualifying for the italian grand prix here on speed channel bob varsha along with steve
00:32:53matchett and david hobbs as always here is belgium winner kimmy raikkonen the star of mclaren mercedes
00:32:59and their astonishing rise from absolutely nowhere in formula one at the beginning of the season
00:33:05to victory in belgium quite a story this year well the car was a fantastic turnaround it's very
00:33:11good for that uh 53 hundredths of a second quick in that first sector than rubens barichello they
00:33:17matched um the straight line speed with the speed trap of the sour both cars exactly the same 361
00:33:22so they are on a flyer again look at the small profile of the rear wing on the mclaren obviously
00:33:28got
00:33:28very good mechanical grip yeah and good aerodynamics everywhere else giving it down force without the drag of
00:33:34the wings and the michelins
00:33:41not as good through the lesmos again which maybe they've just taken a little bit too much
00:33:45down force off but it'll be quick down this long straight to the parabolica
00:34:06only
00:34:07third nearly eight tenths slower than provisional pole sitter rubens barichello
00:34:13michael schumacher has led 631 laps this year that's 72 more laps than kimmy raikkonen has completed
00:34:22that's how difficult it's been for mclaren this year and as you see that nose has been broadened
00:34:26a new aerodynamic approach for this unique racetrack
00:34:32a lot of work has gone on aerodynamics on on all the cars and you'll see there's a lot of
00:34:36tweaks on
00:34:37the wings of these cars that you'll never see anywhere else again something we were touching on
00:34:40in yesterday's practice show that this is an absolutely unique track unlike silverstone again
00:34:46which is very quick and spar you still have to compromise the car we're tweaking the downforce
00:34:51a little bit for those slow speed corners but here it's just so flat out pretty much all the way
00:34:55around renaissance 71 percent full throttle work around this truck and it's pretty awesome isn't it
00:35:02but of course it's so nice to have the security of a bit of downforce when you break at the
00:35:06end of that
00:35:07straight there where you're doing 225 miles an hour into that chicane where you're probably going
00:35:11into it at about 40. i mean you really could do with some downforce there slower than uh his teammate
00:35:17there
00:35:38it will be a tragedy in my opinion i don't think i'm alone if they go to a 2.4
00:35:44v8
00:35:47v8 in a formula one car these days i don't know well the new replacement for formula 3000 is going
00:35:53to be a v8 and they're only going to be about 100 horsepower less well i'm hearing that they're going
00:35:57to be a four liter v8 for that grand prix 2 series the idea that the support series has a
00:36:03bigger capacity
00:36:04v8 than the formula one premiere series just seems incredible fifth for david courtard who falls in line
00:36:12behind his teammate kimmy raikkonen and the renault of jarno truly a little bit slower than he went in the
00:36:17first
00:36:18round of single lap qualifying so i'd imagine they just put some more fuel on board gotta be
00:36:21and he was quicker than raikkonen so he was he had stepped up in that first session but
00:36:25it's the second one that counts so the order is now barrakello and schumacher on row one
00:36:31raikkonen and truly on row two cool thard and riccardo zonta in the toyota on row three
00:36:36followed by mark weber and olivier panis now fischiello went very well in the first round of
00:36:42qualifying rounded up six so look for him to uh be pretty pretty quick except they do carry a lot
00:36:47of
00:36:48fuel he's been big on fuel this year faster than his teammate 362 kph
00:36:56and he made a fantastic job of the chicane as well
00:37:10at the top of our show you heard mario andretti talking about peeking through the forest
00:37:16to watch the greats of formula one racing here at monza imagine on sunday there'll be some
00:37:22kids standing outside the wall unable to get into the race there'll be a lot of people unable to
00:37:27get into the race traffic here at once it's terrible but it is they'll be out there listening to those
00:37:32v10 screaming by and dreaming of the day when they can come to monza as a racing driver i'll bet
00:37:37that
00:37:37well wow tell you that time for that speed track time from from sauber it's 224.8 as near as
00:37:45make no
00:37:45difference 225 miles an hour breaking for that chicane where they're going in at about 60.
00:37:52yeah 60 max it's very very tight bridgestone tires again he's very uncharacteristically slowing out
00:38:00middle sector there how's the second one i had third one gonna work out 10th wow i don't think they
00:38:06wanted that but that's where his teammate is it's a lot of fuel he's got a lot of fuel on
00:38:09board i know
00:38:10yeah that's where massa was before his teammate arrived but this is a two-stop strategy here so
00:38:19you don't think you go for once now i i as you said earlier on that sauber have been doing
00:38:26this
00:38:26all year long really they've been compromising their qualifying position by putting that extra
00:38:31fuel in they tend to run a two-stop strategy but use a very long first segment so as you
00:38:37as you say
00:38:38there's a lot of fuel on board these cars i would guess and remember 10 kilos of fuel is about
00:38:43four
00:38:44tenths of a second in weight penalty but boy you start at the back and you risk running into
00:38:48fernando alonso ran into last year when he ran up the back of jasper stoppen last year well of course
00:38:54that's the problem the concertina effect at turn one here is absolutely enormous because even with
00:38:59the standing start they all arrived there on that very first lap at around about 165 miles an hour
00:39:04we have another fia timeout five drivers still to come the fastest five of the first session alonso
00:39:10button sato bizonia and finally juan pablo montoya stay with us alonso will be up next
00:39:19welcome back to name that celebrity and i admit i'm stumped
00:39:25a peek in the renault garage i can tell you that's batty in the background but
00:39:30not everybody in the background right just like a former benetton mechanic
00:39:36there is alonso on track be sure to join us tomorrow morning for live coverage of the italian
00:39:41grand prix beginning at 7 30 a.m eastern with the accurate pre-race show featuring peter windsor
00:39:46this week peter will catch up with pierre du pasquier of michelin to find out what happened
00:39:50two weeks ago in belgium again that's tomorrow morning at 7 30 eastern live only here on speed
00:39:55however the event is subject to blackout
00:40:00here goes fernando alonso onto the clock just 23 years old
00:40:16watch for that rapid turn in yeah it's still right there isn't it every time just cranks it
00:40:22none of that smoothness i got an interesting email from a viewer with vast karting experience and he
00:40:28says alonso coming out of european ica karting he says they use very sticky tires there so it takes
00:40:34a lot of physical effort to get him to turn and get that rear wheel off the ground the way
00:40:39they pivot
00:40:41racing carts and he said that is probably where alonso has this driving style of just approaching
00:40:46the turn in and cranking it over it's a wonder it works so well in the cars exactly it's our
00:40:51kind
00:40:51of money yeah it doesn't break the front wheels away straight away and induce understeer i think the
00:40:56engineers must be pulling the hair out however it clearly works for him so the bottom line is if it
00:41:01works let him carry on no point in changing his style if it works now that was a smooth turn
00:41:15in
00:41:15by his standards of course it is the parabolica too it's a long tour yeah you can see his rear
00:41:22view
00:41:22mirrors flapping in that 225 mile an hour breeze well he replaces raikkonen in third spot but of course
00:41:30we've got some very fast guys to go button sarto or sarto in particular personia and montoya
00:41:38that voice you can hear in the background is bob constanturus he's been doing the english
00:41:42commentary at formula one for many many years always used to do them on too very distinctive voice
00:41:55i've always wanted to do a study of the great pa announcers of history there's some short tracks in
00:42:00america that have some classics now guys as we watch button in the bar keep your eyes open at the
00:42:07front
00:42:07suspension this car has been re-equipped with the front torque transfer system you will see those two
00:42:13drive shafts makes the car look like it's got four-wheel four-wheel drive on the car when we
00:42:18see those slow-mos of the cars going through the chicane we might have a better shot of it the
00:42:22fia
00:42:22banned that system the bar developed for the car because it was electronically controlled and
00:42:28hydraulic control you can see them right yeah they're not allowed to do that so bar nevertheless
00:42:33we've wanted to persist with this and they've taken the controls off so now it's just a very
00:42:37simple mechanical clutch there they are those little drive shafts it's something that bennetton
00:42:42ran in 99 nick worth designed nick worth is the guy if you remember started the simtek racing team
00:42:47back in 94 well after that collapsed nick worth started working for bennetton and developed this
00:42:52system the idea is to stop the unladen wheel locking under braking by just carrying the torque over
00:42:59from the laden wheel from one side of the car to the unladen wheel just to keep the momentum going
00:43:04a little bit therefore torque transfer system but frankly it was it was next to useless on the
00:43:09bennetton but well of course the other thing you have that drive shaft which apparently is messing
00:43:13up their aerodynamics which you can imagine it would do when you think of the pains they go to
00:43:17to get the aerodynamics right on these things it seems to me like they're trying to make a point
00:43:20here and cutting off their noses just to bite their faces yeah i i think you're right david i really
00:43:25do
00:43:25into fourth goes jensen button bumping kimi raikkonen so the order is now barakello schumacher
00:43:34alonzo and jensen button will take a break and return for takuma sato
00:43:43there she is over there oh i think must have been
00:43:48welcome back this contingent of japanese fans about to come alive oh yes anywhere you go in the world
00:43:52when people see themselves on the big screen at trackside you immediately get energetic here comes
00:43:58to kuma sato
00:44:02once again with that front end torque transfer system on the bar honda that steve mentioned
00:44:07you could just see the drive shafts there on that on board shot
00:44:11the biggest problem as you were alluding to earlier on dave with the aerodynamics screwing
00:44:16up the airplay around the front of the car the drive shafts themselves are not really the problem
00:44:20it's when they become rotating that's what causes the big problem that's why really the tires the
00:44:26turbulence caused by the tires is the problem because they they're a rotating mass and the air
00:44:31just goes absolutely askew and it's the same thing around the drive shaft you can't get the rotating
00:44:36object to cut smoothly through the air but doesn't it affect it as it goes through the barge boards
00:44:41actually it is quite a big obstruction in a way i mean you think of the size of the little
00:44:45tabs and
00:44:46flip-ups they have on these cars and put a big drive shaft right through the middle of it there
00:44:49there you can see it not very clear but right through the left front suspension you can just pick up
00:44:53that
00:44:53the drive shaft looks almost purple in color it's a protective coating and they put over the steel
00:44:59sort of brown to purple when the light hits it it looks almost gunmetal blue i should say i don't
00:45:04think
00:45:04sato is going to be quiet as quick as his teammate on this run unless he picks up a lot
00:45:08of time through
00:45:09the parabolica there and he does he does bumps button 120.715 to buttons 120.786 yesterday sato was
00:45:23presented with the italian comfortigianato motori prize voted by a panel of former italian racing
00:45:30drivers officials and journalists for standing out in modern formula one previously won by michael
00:45:37schumacher olam prost mika hakkanen and others well he's certainly done that he has indeed
00:45:45completely okay antonio pictoni
00:45:53we were saying yesterday chaps that williams are thinking of dumping this twin keel chassis
00:45:59arrangement going back to the single keel and uh quite rightly on the message boards i noticed some
00:46:05viewers are saying i wish steve had gone into a little bit more detail about what the difference
00:46:09is between the two well we could talk for hours the difference is but basically a twin keel will
00:46:15improve the airfare but the penalty you pay for it is you compromise steering geometry and you have a
00:46:21lot of extra weight because of those pylons underneath the car so aerodynamic gain is very small but the
00:46:27weight penalty kind of offsets it ferrari have said absolutely no way we don't see any gain in it and
00:46:32of
00:46:32course they've won every championship since what but two thousand hard to argue that posoni of course
00:46:37would absolutely love to be on pole in front of his home crowd i guess basically what you could
00:46:44because he's brazilian he's brazilian exactly well he'll please all the brazilians in the grandstand the
00:46:48italians might not care but nice recovery so in one month he has to be on pole in brazil so
00:46:55he's just
00:46:55practicing here basically the twin keel suspension you have to have something to pick up the lower
00:46:59suspension points you can either mount both lower suspensions to one point a single keel or you can
00:47:04have two splayed pickup points to either side to clear up the airflow right down the middle of the
00:47:10car underneath with twin keels fell off badly there that's not what they were looking for at all as you
00:47:16can see from the look on their faces yeah i don't think they were expecting that there's a great shot
00:47:20right there bob what you're talking about those wide mount right there you see right yeah just makes a nice
00:47:25empty hole underneath going right to the splitter in the underbody it's a neat idea in theory and
00:47:31um patrick head was very uh pro the twin keel approach and was surprised when jeff willis who's
00:47:38now the technical director at bar did not develop the fw25 to be a twin keel chassis he said you
00:47:43know
00:47:43we would have made the fw25 a twin keel if things had been different in the winton or something to
00:47:49that
00:47:49effect implying that once jeff willis had gone we would do they have done but i don't know it hasn't
00:47:54really
00:47:54worked for him well here comes the fastest man in the first session a former pole sitter and race
00:47:59winner there are horses for courses and for juan pablo montoya in the bmw williams his course has
00:48:06always been monza well marcus schumark has only been up the front row three times this year is montoya
00:48:13gonna make it four here comes the first intermediate and he's quicker oh here we go remember that
00:48:23passing move he laid out last year yeah right there hopefully we'll see more of that tomorrow
00:48:32there's something about montoya and monza i mean it's just extraordinary his first win was here
00:48:36and as i say he's had two poles here and uh two front two other front rows it's pretty incredible
00:48:41really looks pretty tidy through the lesmos absolutely through the exit of lesmo too you
00:48:45now so better than that oh slightly off
00:48:54well schumark is watching the monitors i tell you with extreme interest
00:49:00his best this year is a second place start but boy he hasn't really had a sniff of pole
00:49:08last time he's on the podium was immola back in the spring can he do it can he do it
00:49:16he does bump michael yeah wow that ain't too shabby not from that chassis
00:49:30well the bmw williams cars have come alive here at bonza
00:49:37coming up on his 29th birthday he and his wife connie announced this weekend they are two months
00:49:44pregnant
00:49:48so congratulations to them and to ross braun luka de mando zemelo leans in says they'll be
00:49:53the usual amount your pay packet this week your job is safe for another two weeks
00:49:58you know looked like he was misting up a little bit which we're used to seeing from
00:50:02him is a very emotional young brazilian well not all that young anymore gosh no came into formula
00:50:08one as a 19 year old or so back in
00:50:13the turn of the decade the decade of the 90s that is
00:50:20well there's a guy who's had an amazing career as a manager luka de mando zemelo organized the italian
00:50:26world cup of football or soccer depending on who's listening to me
00:50:31now he has brought ferrari back to prominence taken over the fiat empire
00:50:38after the tragic passing of the agnellis and uh he's just he's been amazing still quite a young man
00:50:47still looks very dapper very chic doesn't he he's always been very urbane
00:50:53a true formula one grandee absolutely yeah and a true you know very very sophisticated italian and
00:51:00he made quite an impression in new york earlier this year when he arrived to kick off festivities
00:51:06celebrating ferrari's 50th anniversary of its arrival in the united states on the commercial car market
00:51:14they've just signed a new contract with the puma sportswear sportswear baker
00:51:20raising their annual income from that of 500 000 to a million three-year deal they'll probably like
00:51:25a whole lot more than that when they start selling those knockoffs out on the on the uh souvenir market
00:51:31congratulations to the fastest three qualifiers for the italian grand prix at monza third quickest for
00:51:35scuderia ferrari marlboro michael schumacher second for bmw williams one pablo montoya and on the
00:51:41pole for scuderia ferrari marlboro recording the fastest ever lap in the history of formula one at
00:51:46just over 260 kilometers per hour rubens barracchello rubens what a fantastic lap particularly that last
00:51:51sector too well um you know i'm i'm so happy with uh with the whole thing because the car was
00:51:59was really
00:52:00good and i'm i i was able to uh take every uh little bit out of out of the car
00:52:06especially i'm happier
00:52:07uh with lesmos the lesmo one and lesmo two than i am with the the final part with uh of
00:52:14my lap and uh
00:52:15spain it's been really good the whole weekend the car has been showing showing good potential so
00:52:21i'm i'm i'm here i'm thrilled was it a perfect lap from your point of view
00:52:27i think it was i mean i'm perfect we're never going to be perfect uh but it's um it's been
00:52:33very close to
00:52:34to the very limit and um i mean monza it's all about getting it right more than getting to the
00:52:40limit because sometimes you just make a mistake in turn one and you give away just half a second there
00:52:44but i think i've i've been very close to the limit in in every point of the circuit especially on
00:52:50those
00:52:50two lesmos like i said and i'm you know i was excited inside of the car to be honest and
00:52:55a very
00:52:55good build up this morning to be quickest then as well yeah no we we have a good car we
00:53:00have a good
00:53:01tire a good engine everything is is really well we just have to uh see what's the weather going to
00:53:08do tomorrow just be calm and try to to play with our cards congratulations one pablo nice to have
00:53:14you back on the front row of the grid been a while yeah i think it's been a while actually
00:53:18and you know
00:53:19i think the team has done a really good job and what can i say you know it's it was
00:53:25good the first
00:53:25qualifying you know we ran really fast you know we knew ferrari could go quite a little faster than
00:53:31what they did and and they did you know i made too many mistakes but even if it would have
00:53:35been a
00:53:35perfect club i think they would have been a little bit faster you know it's good you know we're in
00:53:39the front row i think it's good for the team you know we need the points you've done a lot
00:53:43of racing
00:53:43laps at monza very close to ferrari's both rubens and michael what are your thoughts on the race
00:53:48tomorrow well i don't know it's it's going to be a i think an interesting race looking at the race
00:53:53pace
00:53:54it's going to be quite close i think they might be a little bit stronger but you know we'll see
00:53:57where they are in strategy and and everything you know it's it's nice you know my worst qualifying
00:54:02here has been p2 over the last four years so can't complain and the car mechanically very sound now
00:54:08yeah i think i think so you know everything went really well good congratulations to you too
00:54:15michael your lap looked pretty good for a while there can you talk us through it
00:54:20yeah it was it started off very good first sector was always a little bit of a struggle
00:54:25and i got that right and then in the last corner i left a little bit of time anyway i
00:54:32think there's
00:54:33not too much to complain about to be third with that situation i'm quite happy with didn't expect that
00:54:39honestly and rubens just did a perfect lap and nothing i could do against that why do you say you
00:54:46didn't expect that you're saying that in reference to the pre-qualifying times no because i i lost
00:54:52quite a bit of left time and i wasn't expecting being so far off rubens's time that i would stay
00:55:00where i am so i'm reasonably happy how does this weekend feel to you it must be a wonderful experience
00:55:06to come here as the new world champion or obviously going to be appointed at the end of the year
00:55:10but
00:55:10mathematically the world champion and to be here in front of your home crowd
00:55:14yeah exactly it certainly is after winning both championships coming here rubens achieving the
00:55:21pole position me being third so we're pretty close to each other having a good chance tomorrow in
00:55:28in the race to transform this into a good result so we obviously feel very happy and hopefully we can
00:55:36put
00:55:36the the the eye dots on it and then finish it off in style and make our tifosi happy which
00:55:42supports us
00:55:42support us for all the years when whenever it was difficult now with celebration and that's obviously
00:55:49it would be the perfect result if you could give it to them and you have that little tricolor on
00:55:53the
00:55:54side of your home at the italian flag yeah well it's it's a way of saying thank you to to
00:55:58everybody uh
00:55:59uh to our engineers mechanics uh tifosi because i have a lot of support i i have a lot of
00:56:05uh um
00:56:07things i got from all of them and that's my way of saying thank you rubens one final point
00:56:14ferrari actually haven't won three races in a row at monza it could happen tomorrow of course
00:56:18well i'm i'm actually the the lucky one one of the lucky ones because i've i've won the 2002
00:56:24grand prix and um i like monza i like the support from from the crowd i think it's something that
00:56:30on
00:56:30the past used to to to to bother me now it just give me power and uh i feel good
00:56:36so thankfully thankful
00:56:37to to to them and to our engineers to our whole ferrari group we are here and uh just planning
00:56:44a victory
00:56:44tomorrow if it happens or no it depends uh pretty much on what we do tomorrow but um we're quite
00:56:50confident
00:56:51now if we could have some words from you in your own language starting with rubens and as rubens
00:56:55begins to speak in his native portuguese you heard peter windsor refer to michael being appointed world
00:56:59champion at the end of the year therein lies a story we'll talk about that when we come back
00:57:07welcome back to monza there's an area look down on the paddock which seems to get
00:57:11busier and busier and bigger and bigger every year qualifying is now complete for sunday's italian
00:57:17grand prix let's enjoy rubens barticello's pole lap
00:57:23he wasn't the fastest car through this first sector chats was he he was 26 dead through this
00:57:29sector one montoya and michael 25.9 so just clipped him through here but it was in sector two and
00:57:36sector
00:57:36three a little bit further around the track he really came to life but he went over that chicane
00:57:42very nicely there just got it dead right going through the the old curva grande down to the
00:57:48de la rosa chicane which is where so much action happens on lap one look at that using all the
00:57:53road
00:57:53going in flipping the curbs nicely using all the road going out down to the lesmos again all the road
00:57:59going in right up on the white line there pretty wide at the exit lesmo one into two very wide
00:58:08there
00:58:08too but still obviously keeping his hoof right in it makes me wonder two things about it's a fantastic
00:58:16lap from barichello there's no doubt there it is 0.4701 at that point but he finished the lap
00:58:230.6 ahead of the rest of the field i wonder if barichello is using the softer compound tires
00:58:29is therefore running less fuel on board as well and he'll be planning something obscure like a three
00:58:35stopper or coming in very early on a two-stop strategy i wonder if it's just michael schumacher
00:58:40said in that interview there he lost a lot of time through that parabolic and was surprised to even
00:58:44end up there it's an interesting late downshift by rubens barichello into the parabolica you also
00:58:50heard our peter windsor tell michael schumacher he will be world champion when he is appointed at the
00:58:55end of the year michael's wearing a cap this weekend commemorating his seven world championships
00:58:59formula one boss bernie ecclestone said he'd rather michael didn't wear that because of course he's not
00:59:04champion until the fia says he is
00:59:09welcome back to monza where the ghosts of formula one greats stalk the forests time now for some
00:59:15special sounds the sounds of speed turn it up
00:59:22so
