00:00really the first like five innings took years off my life i don't know they added them back on
00:06after the game you know became what felt like out of reach until it didn't feel out of reach
00:11yeah but uh that's that's one hell of a playoff game well it also makes you seem like it's taking
00:17forever when it was three hours and 39 minutes and we had 15 different pitchers that were used
00:21in that game i talk about a about a slog of a game yeah yeah there was a point where
00:26i just
00:27remember saying like this can be over now and now that it coincided with the guardians having a
00:31five-run lead and jose ramirez continuing to show up that helped by the way how about patrick bailey
00:37can we just shout out a little patty bailey game how about that the irishman what a what a hell
00:41of a start there you have to do some bailey's irish cream now in honor of patrick bailey having
00:45this uh ridiculous this is now the second time he's homered oh yeah and then and the it's funny
00:50like he justified the trade just within the one swing of the bat last night but i gotta say uh
00:55kudos to the guardians offense for once for bailing out steven vote because steven vote
01:00had some decisions in yesterday's game that were head scratchers uh you know i i do want to tell
01:08everyone and we'll get to this in a bigger point in a minute there can be middle ground on steven
01:12vote
01:12but just to start here byby who hadn't pitched in two weeks going against the heart of the white
01:18socks lineup for the first time coming out of the pen uh ever in the postseason i think ever in
01:24the
01:24big leagues as well ever in the big that was dunderheaded kate smith in the eighth when you
01:29had a five run lead uh and then to have to go to gavin in the ninth uh thank god
01:34they won because
01:35right now it would be steven vote tear down time for guardians for you even say having to go to
01:40gavin but even like that that's a questionable thing we'll talk about that all day long i would
01:43imagine in the usage that you did with gavin i yeah there was a lot that was questionable uh but
01:48what isn't questionable is the idea that it was as much of a patrick bailey game it was a
01:52jose ramirez game and the idea that this offense you score three runs in the first two games and
01:57then you score 18 in the previous two and listen they're just going to get a bunch of walks that's
02:01fine that's part of the deal i'm okay with that 17 walks over two games is an insane number but
02:06you do what you got to do like i i was pleasantly surprised at the offensive output it's a valid
02:12question all right is this just the white socks imploding because this formula it does not work the
02:18longer you get into series that is a fair part of the conversation what i'll say is
02:22the white socks pitchers threw a lot of balls in those first two games and they gave the guardians
02:27plenty of opportunities uh maybe not as many opportunities as the last two games but the
02:33difference is the guardians hitters didn't convert those opportunities so there is an element of like
02:38yes some of this is this isn't just a simple as one thing some of this is the white socks
02:44rotation
02:44and bullpen is running out of uh gas here some of it is no the the guardians hitters are actually
02:50converting these opportunities including having uh multiple home runs last night oh i mean no
02:55question i mean jay ran single-handedly at multiple points in game three and game four and then even even
03:00we debated yesterday about anhel martinez does he start does he not start we both went with start
03:04uh why does that six inning go the way that it does he takes the hit by pitch he steals
03:08second base
03:08bazana then has the hit down the right field line you're off to the races like i mean that like
03:12there's so
03:13many things about last night and vote have been telling us for how long about just needing hits
03:17with runners in scoring position and we've been watching all season long being like well that damn
03:21hasn't broke yet well good time for it to go ahead and break games three and four when you need
03:25to
03:25when you need to get those wins can we find middle ground on steven vote because i twitter you're never
03:31going to satisfy twitter when you're talking about pitching changes and bullpen changes in this type of
03:35series well and here's the thing there's been no that's not going to happen there's been no middle
03:39ground on hosey into the last two games there's been no middle ground on who was going to start
03:43game three but the vote thing i think is listen i don't think there's a defense of how steven vote
03:50managed the game last night i don't uh if gavin williams comes in in the fourth inning i might have
03:57been able to stomach it gavin williams in the ninth inning and effectively absolving you of of being able
04:03to really really utilize your biggest advantage in game five outside of home field advantage i just i
04:09cannot defend the ninth inning thing right nobody i can't either at the same point you made the the
04:16best point which is yeah we never like the entirety of in-game substitutions with managers that's always
04:22a results-based thing so there's an element of it's like okay if you're steven vote and you don't trust
04:28your bullpen right now you don't entirely trust your rotation i mean heck you even had to have the
04:33quick hook on messick your best starter this year and you don't trust your offense so what like a
04:39manager is only is good is what he can fall back on correct that's why he fell back it's again
04:45indefensible but when it comes to specific the amount of people who flipped off of steven vote last night
04:51it's like i guys i think there can be a modicum of empathy on this of like he doesn't know
04:57what he
04:58can trust with his team right now and that makes a manager's job impossible so i agree with the idea
05:02that uh i i wouldn't have gone by the in that spot i would have gone gavin instead and i
05:07do question
05:08a couple things out of him like game three you got a four-run lead that grew to a six
05:12-run lead
05:12and kate smith gets the last six out game four it's a five-run lead and it's a kate smith
05:16and gavin williams combo i i don't know that you need that but your main arching point is true
05:22twitter's always going to melt down over pitching changes and what you do in the middle of these games
05:26especially if it starts to look bad i i don't know i don't really know what else steven vote
05:31was expected to do in that spot yeah and and again in that in the didn't handle it perfect i'm
05:36not
05:36going to say handle it perfect we got things we can that were real gripes about but if you're going
05:40to gripe about heron coming in or even byby coming in i think you're missing the point how long you
05:45knew
05:45in uh what was it the fifth inning you knew how screwed heron was after that walk when they showed
05:52his
05:52face and he looked like he would have rather been in rikers island on death row yeah he looked
05:59terrified he looked and by the way that is a six foot six 240 pound man who's 30 years old
06:05who just looks like he's 18 i'm so envious of that something weird was happening in that game
06:10because heron had it and then i so parker messick at one point in the uh in the inning he
06:15got knocked
06:16out on it was a a little a little dribbler up the first baseline and he kind of like dove
06:21in an
06:21interesting way to try to grab it and his hand just kind of screeched across the grass and i and
06:26then i saw him playing with his hand the whole rest of the inning and i was like did he
06:29did he
06:30get like a scab or something there did he tear it up i wasn't sure and then in the back
06:33of my mind i
06:34kept i kept looking at pictures and i kept seeing pictures playing with the baseball over and over
06:38again and this goes back to what tommy fan was talking about uh but it goes back to bazana even
06:42in
06:42the seventh inning of that game too he had a ball to center field that he thought was gone look
06:46at his
06:46reaction when when that ball does not go over the fence uh there's something interesting is happening
06:51i'm starting to build a little bit of a theory against this the baseball that's being used right
06:55now i'm going to the tommy fam corner but something weird is happening so what's crazy just as a quick
06:59aside on the baseball thing this has been a conversation for seven or eight years now and
07:05baseball's continued and there have been studies on the baseball that the the uh composition of
07:10baseballs have changed repeatedly without any sort of knowledge of the players the core is what
07:16they're always talking about because is it looking more like it's a a golf ball or a tennis ball in
07:20there is kind of the idea like what what and then when it changes obviously everything else changes but
07:25like manfred has been incredibly sheepish about this so if they just changed baseballs again heading
07:31into the postseason like that is a tangible you have an impact on the playoffs kind of thing
07:37there should be there should be some level of transparency on that that's the problem baseball's
07:43never given them a level of transparency on that they just not to us it's fine but to the players
07:47they know they just do and that's why then and and because this has happened for so long there's
07:51enough players again look at bazana after he hits that ball in the seventh inning he looks like that
07:56ball should have been seven rows deep and gone and it just wasn't and then and then the amount of
08:00pitchers that are just you can tell they're having they're having trouble with the ball and it's just uh
08:04there's something interesting happening here 216 474 0092 did the offense bail out steven votes
08:10decisions uh chris in maple heights wants to talk about the usage of gavin williams welcome to the
08:15show there chris thank you guys thanks for taking my call first of all the white socks are just out
08:19of
08:19gas they're out of pitching so we got this but you know most these guys when between starts they'll have
08:25a little side bullpen session just to stay sharp so basically he had the ideal situation last night
08:32get in there throw 15 18 pitches in a live game we only needed two outs we're up by four
08:37squat
08:38there throw some strikes then come back on saturday strike out 15 more white socks and let's let's go
08:43to tampa bay and take care of business there what do you guys think all right 15 is that all
08:47i was
08:47thinking maybe 18 all right then now we're talking chris we appreciate you buddy chris i tend to agree
08:53with chris i'm not concerned about it he was already doing his bullpen session uh as kate smith was
08:58warming up in that game anyway as is but there is something different with live bullets and if he
09:02struggles on saturday i know it didn't matter chris knows it didn't matter i'm assuming you think it
09:08didn't matter as well no i think it mattered you think it mattered i think it's a risk i think
09:12it's
09:12a risk you didn't need to take you could have put festa in there that's kind of the point is
09:15that
09:16people are going to point to it anyway you're not going to get off the hook of it because and
09:19you'll
09:19never be able to disprove if someone like yourself says it matters you're never going to be able to
09:23disprove that pitching in a live game is anything different there is equal to excuse me just doing
09:29the bullpen i also think i think you saw this with bybee bybee was throwing like 96 last night but
09:34the
09:35other part of this though is in sorry one second is the idea that that gavin it didn't come in
09:40with
09:40a clean slate this is part of why we talk about with bybee and like what you would have done
09:43in
09:43that spot if you wanted to give gavin 20 pitches because you just thought 20 pitches would be good
09:49for him bullpen session and we'll just put in a real game and this matters give him a clean slate
09:54like don't do what you did there don't don't already throw him into trouble and then try to
09:57make it 12 times harder i just think i've heard enough pitchers say that the difference is you
10:03can go out there for one inning and say i'm going to throw as hard as i can that is
10:06a change of
10:07approach and i'm not saying gavin did that i certainly think that is part of what happened with
10:11bybee is he wasn't able to locate once he was dialing it up a bit but with gavin it's just
10:17i i buy the
10:18live bullets thing like there's a difference of i've got a bullpen to do and i'm going to take my
10:23time and get my work in to you know it's game four winner go home there's somebody on uh first
10:30base
10:30and you know now i got to go ahead and save this game i think that is i think that's
10:35a massive
10:35disruption to the thing that matters most to pitchers which is your a to b right your your
10:41general progression that you do from start to start from moment to moment for me it just felt it felt
10:45unnecessary was the problem and i get it it's a at that point then you know you know out another
10:51run
10:51but it was a five run game like yeah sorry if you can't i i'm not going to say throw
10:56fest out there
10:57but like if you can't throw festa in there and a five run lead why what's he even doing on
11:00the
11:00roster we could have we could have just had another another at bat another hitter in there
11:03if that hasn't even appeared in the series again it's not who i want to go to but if you're
11:07not
11:07going to throw him in in a five run game and feel like you're safe he shouldn't be on the
11:12team
11:12and feel like you're safe he shouldn't be on the team
11:12and feel like you're safe he shouldn't be on the team
11:12and feel like you're safe he shouldn't be on the team
11:12and feel like you're safe he shouldn't be on the team
11:12You
