00:00On a hot Monday here where the heat is up and everything's garbage and trash
00:06and it's bad, and we needed somebody to kind of calm things down a little bit here.
00:12And I saw Perk yesterday at the game, and Chris, as we get going here,
00:18I can't argue Malik was terrible.
00:20There's no blaming offensive line for some of that.
00:24It's on him late on reads.
00:27At times, Chris, I felt like he wasn't sure if he wanted to run or throw
00:32when he got outside the pocket, and he took a really bad, bad sack
00:37on top of the three turnovers.
00:39Going forward, we all agree it wasn't good for Malik Willis.
00:43I'm not benching him.
00:44He's got to keep playing.
00:46What do you think?
00:47I agree.
00:48I agree.
00:49It was a terrible game for Malik Willis.
00:52Joe, you know, I came on here last week, and I said,
00:55if the draft was next week, the Dolphins should take an edge rusher.
01:00Quarterback won't be their number one concern.
01:02I still believe that, Joe, but around the third quarter,
01:06the emails started coming in.
01:08Perk, you idiot.
01:09What are you talking about?
01:10Quarterback is the number one problem.
01:12I'm going to give Malik a little more grace, but yesterday was not good.
01:17Yesterday was a step back.
01:19As you said, he repeated mistakes, and that was one of the things
01:22that I accredited Malik for, he didn't frequently repeat mistakes,
01:27but yesterday he looked like he was shell-shocked.
01:31Bad, bad performance for Malik.
01:33Yeah.
01:33Chris, I thought he was frustrated.
01:35I saw frustration and everything else that finally got to him.
01:41So the other part is special teams.
01:44I don't want to ask you about special teams.
01:45We'll get into young quarterbacks and all that.
01:47I could do 20 minutes on quarterbacks with you, Perk,
01:50but you're probably doing podcasts all day.
01:52You cannot start a game.
01:54And I just get done going, we need better special teams, Jimmy.
01:58We need some great coverage to start this game.
02:00And the next thing you know, untouched 81 yards.
02:04Could have been a lot worse if we didn't run him down.
02:06It would have been a touchdown.
02:07But you set him, Joe Burrow up on the shortest field he's ever played on
02:11to start a game.
02:12Yeah, yeah.
02:13And Mike Gusecki being the recipient of that 81-yard kickoff.
02:17Yeah, that's true.
02:17Good point.
02:18Yeah, here's the thing, Joe, that I understand that there's a lot of
02:22roster shuffling going on and that special teams is going to bear the
02:26brunt of that.
02:27I think on that opening kickoff return, there were five guys who did not
02:32go through training camp with the Dolphins.
02:35Set that aside.
02:36We're seeing mistakes made by veterans, right?
02:39Riley Patterson, kickoff land short of the zone.
02:42You missed the extra point.
02:43The unside kick goes out of bounds.
02:47Jalen Wright, he muffs a kickoff return.
02:50Malik Washington, the punt return that went for 28 yards, he fielded it at the
02:55two-yard line a week after he fields one at the four-yard line.
02:59And they say he shouldn't have fielded it.
03:01Malik is a veteran player.
03:02He's one of the smartest guys on the team, Joe.
03:05And my point is, you can't have the mistakes on special teams from your veterans,
03:10your most reliable guys.
03:12Guys, that's bad.
03:13I love special teams.
03:14I did the nickname story.
03:16I like Chris Tabor, the special teams coach.
03:19But, Joe, this cannot continue.
03:20It absolutely cannot continue like this.
03:23You know what?
03:24I'm glad you said that because I have a little different take on it, and I
03:29understand the roster is young and thin.
03:31It sounds like a soap opera during the day.
03:34The young and the thin.
03:36Because this roster is, but that is not, I don't buy that for special teams.
03:41There's a bunch of guys that have been on special teams that can learn how to
03:46stay in their lane and beat a guy and make tackles.
03:49I just don't.
03:50I don't buy that.
03:52I come from the school of four or five guys.
03:54I watch some guys that couldn't run real fast, weren't real big.
03:58They're really good special teams with my teams that seem to make all the plays and
04:02sometimes got to go to pro bowls.
04:06But it's just not acceptable.
04:09I'm with you across the board, and I don't know what's going to happen.
04:12I want to get back to the other thing here.
04:14So the defense, I thought they played pretty well yesterday, and everybody's
04:19going, what are you talking about?
04:20And I go, I think they played pretty well.
04:22There were no breakdowns.
04:23The coverage was pretty tight for the most part.
04:26Down the middle of the field, we are in great position to actually bat the ball
04:32away.
04:32Somehow he whiffs it, but on it, and it's a touchdown.
04:36But I thought overall, for all the bad field position they played in, I thought they were
04:40pretty good.
04:40Overall, what did you think of the defense?
04:41Oh, Joe, they've got to discover a pass rush.
04:44You had the fourth straight game without a sack.
04:47That pass rush was invisible.
04:49You had four quarterback hits.
04:51That's it.
04:53Chop, where were you?
04:54My training camp MVP.
04:56You showed some signs of life the previous two weeks, but you weren't there.
04:59Josh Uche, Zach Seeler.
05:02Where are these guys?
05:03Look, I know this pass rush.
05:04That's the best they can play, though.
05:06So, to my point, to my point about what I said, this guy's squeezing every bit of water
05:13out of that rag on this team.
05:15That's the best those guys can do, man.
05:18I'm not tired of being around waiting.
05:19Chop jumped off sides.
05:21Yeah.
05:22If that's the best Chop can do, he needs to be replaced.
05:25I'm sorry.
05:25But there's nobody else.
05:26What else?
05:27He's the best you have?
05:28No, I mean, in the draft, in the draft, in the first round, because you cannot, I mean,
05:33and you combine that with the three concussions in 11 months, and now you're not getting
05:38to the quarterback.
05:39That's unacceptable.
05:41Look, the tight end thing continued, right?
05:45Gesicki had the touchdown, and the other guy, I can't remember his name, he had a touchdown,
05:51the other tight end.
05:52And, you know, look, you had tight coverage.
05:56Yeah, we got pounded by all of them.
05:57Tanner Hudson, that's it, Tanner Hudson.
06:00Jason Marshall Jr. had great coverage on Jamar Chase on that touchdown.
06:04Zero complaint with that.
06:05Zero.
06:06You can't defend it very much better.
06:08But the other stuff, you know, Jacob Rodriguez was the closest defender on the Gesicki touchdown
06:13and the Samadji Pirine touchdown.
06:16So you got to tighten that up.
06:19The defense was okay, Joe, but the pass rush, you got to find a way to get the quarterback
06:25on the ground.
06:25And I know that if you can't get to him organically, that now you're talking about blitzing and
06:31hanging the defense, the secondary out there and more, right?
06:34With the one-on-one.
06:35So I don't know what you do, but I'm just, I'm really looking at edge rusher as the first
06:40round pick.
06:41Again, talking about getting back to Malik.
06:43You cannot go past the third round without drafting a quarterback.
06:47Malik has not shown me he is your quarterback of the future.
06:50But to me, your number one problem is edge rusher right now, getting to the quarterback.
06:56So I'm going to say something.
06:58I've been waiting to say this for you to come on.
07:00For me, and I saw how bad the quarterback play was yesterday was bad.
07:03I don't know.
07:04I watch all the college games.
07:06I don't see what's out there.
07:08Have you seen anybody watching college football?
07:11You go, that's the guy we got to take if we're going to pick number one overall.
07:15I don't see that guy yet.
07:17Have you seen that guy?
07:18No, no, no.
07:19Not at quarterback.
07:20And you know, look, maybe the answer, if the Dolphins get the number one pick, is trading
07:26down to two or three.
07:28So you pick up another pick, but you can still get, if you want a quarterback, if you want
07:34Colin Simmons, the edge rusher from Texas, if you want Dylan Stewart, the edge rusher
07:38from South Carolina, who is the Notre Dame cornerback?
07:43His name escapes me also.
07:45He's a good player.
07:45Yeah.
07:45Yeah.
07:46Yeah.
07:46He's a good player.
07:47So yeah, I don't see the quarterback, Joe.
07:50I see a couple of edge rushers and a corner.
07:52I don't see the quarterback maybe in the top three, maybe in the top five at this point,
07:58halfway through the college season.
08:00Chris, I, I, this one's going to drive everybody nuts.
08:05I got that first pick right now, whether we're picking one, two or three and he's on the board.
08:11I'm taking Jeremiah Smith every day of the week.
08:14I'm taking, and I know, I know you're going to wait a second.
08:17We got Caleb Douglas coming back and we got Chris on the other side.
08:21Joe, what are you talking about?
08:23Chris bells are going to be a lot.
08:25I get a chance.
08:26That man has got number one written day one, a chance to be a top five or six receiver, big,
08:34strong.
08:36How do you, how do you pass on to Jeremiah Smith?
08:39He can make everybody better.
08:40Here's how, um, you just had Tyreek Hill hall of famer gold jacket.
08:46Do you think Jeremiah Smith is going to be much better than Tyreek?
08:49Like he'll do it in a different fashion because of his size and assets, but, but you just had Tyreek
08:56and you didn't win a playoff game.
08:58When you have Marino and Clayton and Duper, Joe, how many Super Bowls did you win?
09:02When you had Tua and Tyreek and Waddle, how many playoff games did you win?
09:07Try it a different way.
09:08The last time that you won a playoff game, you had a butt kicking defense, right?
09:12With, with Jason Taylor and Zach Thomas and Sam Madison and Pat Sertan, why not try to do it like
09:19that?
09:19Isn't that kind of the model that Philly used to win a Super Bowl two years ago?
09:24Isn't that kind of the model that Seattle used to win a Super Bowl last year?
09:27Try something different.
09:29Try to get you a Cam Wake or a Jason Taylor.
09:31Try it like that because you've had the Tyreek thing.
09:35It didn't get you anywhere.
09:37Boy.
09:39I didn't think you were going to throw Tyreek out there.
09:42Oh, yeah.
09:43Put it on the field and a disaster in life, man.
09:46Okay.
09:47I'm watching him.
09:48I don't know if he's going to a new team or if he's going to court, civil court again to
09:52find out what else he did to that soon-to-be ex-wife.
09:56Oh, man.
09:57I got to tell you, I'm worn out watching that.
09:59I'm going, man, I'm so glad we're not dealing with that one, Perk, right now.
10:02Tell me about it.
10:03Tell me about it, Joe.
10:04That is crazy.
10:06Yeah, man, I know everybody's going to be all over the board on what we should do.
10:10Hey, let me say this, Joe.
10:11Let me say this.
10:12Jeremiah Smith is the BPA.
10:14Like, there is no question, right?
10:16He's the best player available.
10:17I just kind of think sometimes you need to fill a need rather than take the best player available.
10:23I think that Jeremiah Smith needs a good quarterback.
10:26He needs good pass protection.
10:28That edge rusher, you just cut him loose and he creates havoc.
10:31Like, so that's kind of how I'm halfway through the season or a quarter of a way through the NFL
10:36season.
10:37That's how I'm doing it right now.
10:38So, also, and this is my advice.
10:42I'm taking a little takeoff Barry today.
10:44My advice is I think Austin Jackson should stay at right tackle for now.
10:51I'm not switching this stuff about moving Proctor over.
10:55Makes no sense.
10:56Let him stay where he is.
10:57He's getting better and better.
10:58And I know, I know down the road he's going to be our tackle.
11:01I do know that.
11:02But what do you think?
11:04You know, I think I said this to Hollywood yesterday on the pregame show that running the ball and running
11:10the ball to that left side is one of the most reliable things you have on this team.
11:14You probably shouldn't break it up.
11:16Keep running behind Proctor and Patrick Paul with Ollie Gordon because that seems to be working.
11:22So, I don't want to take Proctor and put him on the right side.
11:26Now you weaken that left side.
11:29I'm not sure how much it's going to do for strengthening the right side.
11:33I mean, I think Proctor will be better than Austin Jackson, but it's midseason of his rookie year.
11:40He hasn't played right tackle.
11:41He was a left tackle in college.
11:42Who knows how that's going to work?
11:44I'm sticking with the strength of the left side of that offensive line so I can run behind it and
11:50have something reliable offensively.
11:52I'm not going to confuse the rookie by switching his position.
11:56I'm going to stick with my strength.
11:57Proctor stays at guard for the rest of this season.
12:02So, a lot of frustration today.
12:04It's maxed out.
12:05Today is the worst.
12:07And the score, you know, if somebody called me last night, I didn't see the game, but it looked like
12:10it was a close one.
12:11You go, yeah.
12:13It was so ugly it didn't feel close just because of the mistakes that were made.
12:17Did you feel that way?
12:18I did.
12:19I did.
12:20And, look, this was the most disappointing game of the season.
12:24I would say maybe the Raiders game would be second because you thought maybe, possibly, perhaps you could go on
12:31the road and win the opener against a bad team.
12:33Turns out the Raiders are better than we thought.
12:35And, you know, that was a big ask for the Dolphins.
12:38This game at home, and, Joe, by the way, fans look like fans yesterday are staying away.
12:43I saw a lot of empty seats and I saw a lot of Bengals fans, right?
12:47But Dolphins fans are kind of picking up on this thing.
12:51It's going to be a long year.
12:52Well, picking up on it.
12:53Everybody knew it.
12:54You know, everybody knew this was a real deal.
12:56Yeah, this is not good for business.
12:58There's no question about it.
12:59Exactly, exactly.
13:00So, but, Joe, at this bye week, the coaches need to figure out what does this team do well, such
13:07as running the ball.
13:08You've got to figure out a way to lean into all this stuff.
13:11You've got to figure out how can we move the ball?
13:15How can we stop the other team from scoring, you know, at least 20 points a game or whatever they're
13:20allowing and get this thing moving.
13:22I think it's okay that they are 0-5 from the standpoint of I'm not sure anybody expected them to
13:30be any better than 1-4 at this point, right?
13:32Maybe they would have beaten Las Vegas, but when you saw the schedule and you knew the predicament, you figured
13:38they were going to be really bad off at the bye.
13:41It's just the repeated mistakes on special teams and the way Malik Willis has looked, that's really got the fans
13:48down, I think.
13:49But they've got to figure something out positive, the coaches, I mean, on this bye week, and they've got to
13:55come out looking like a different team against the Jets when they come back in two weeks.
14:00Perk, I don't know if they can play better defensively over what they've done over the last couple weeks with
14:04the names on the back of the jerseys as a group in depth.
14:08I think, and honestly, Kenneth Grant, I know he's rusty, I know he hasn't played.
14:17Is that what you're going to tell me?
14:19Well, I'm saying he's not going to add much because we don't know what he does, right?
14:24We don't know if he's a run stopper, we don't know if he's a pass rusher from inside.
14:29He's going to chew up some snaps, but I don't know what he's going to do to make the defense
14:34better.
14:35Or that's something else, you've got to find out, what do these guys do?
14:39How are they most effective?
14:41Like, Chop, I haven't seen him getting the quarterback on the ground, I haven't seen him setting the edge.
14:45I don't know what Chop does.
14:47This isn't the Chop that I saw in training camp.
14:50So you've got to, as coaches, this is part of coaching, you've got to figure out how to get to
14:55these guys, how to get them to respond,
14:57how do you put them in the best place to produce results, Joe, because...
15:01Yeah, this is Chop, man.
15:03I mean, I just think, I know everybody keeps waiting for Chop to look like this dominant first-round pick
15:09out of Penn State.
15:13I don't see it, man.
15:14Jump off sides in a crucial situation, you know, I don't know, man.
15:19Hey, last one for you.
15:21Now I sound like Debbie Downer.
15:24Wiley Patterson going to make it through this season.
15:27Man, I tell you what, a couple mistakes yesterday, and he didn't cost them the game.
15:32I'm not saying he cost them the game, but that's not the same guy that kicked for me last year.
15:37Nope.
15:37I didn't even look close to him.
15:39Right, right, I agree.
15:40I agree.
15:41And it's, yeah, the kick short of the landing zone and the missed 41-yard field goal, the missed 51
15:48-yard field goal,
15:49the, yeah, the unside kick, it's just very uncharacteristic.
15:53I talked to Riley after the game.
15:55He was a stand-up guy.
15:56But, again, this can't continue, Joe.
16:00You can't have the mistakes on special teams from your veterans, Riley Patterson, Malik Washington, Jalen Wright.
16:07You've got to clean this stuff up.
16:09Yeah, good point.
16:10Hey, it's my fault, and I accept it, and I got to be better.
16:14Say it, Perk.
16:15I got to be better.
16:16I can do better.
16:17I can do better, Joe.
16:19I've got to be better.
16:19I love this therapy session, Joe.
16:21I will be a better person, Joe.
16:23It's on me.
16:24By the way, that's from this marriage working is like, you're right, honey.
16:28I was wrong again.
16:29I don't know what the hell I did, but you know what?
16:31I can be better.
16:32You're exactly right.
16:34That's why I'm single right now, Joe.
16:35That's exactly why you're single.
16:36I had to learn my phrase until today.
16:38Now I'm going to be better going forward.
16:40I'm on this.
16:41I love it.
16:41Oh, man.
16:42Hey, I get this all the time.
16:44Is Omar, all that stuff he was throwing out last week, Perk, two first-round picks for Cam Ward?
16:51You heard that, right?
16:52You heard that.
16:53Yeah, I heard that.
16:54I didn't get a chance to talk about that.
16:55You've known Omar a long time.
16:57Let me see.
16:57Let me go.
16:58Now, Dolphins have a better roster than Minnesota Vikings.
17:01There's a classic.
17:03Yeah, yeah.
17:04No, no.
17:04I've got to straighten Omar out.
17:06You know, I've worked with Omar for, what, seven years at the Sentinel.
17:09I had to straighten him out constantly, daily.
17:12We argue in the press room now.
17:14It's a constant project, this guy, Omar.
17:17So I'm trying, Joe.
17:18I'm doing my best.
17:19You're getting all you guys right out of your game.
17:20I can hear it already.
17:21Anyway.
17:22Hey, Perk, thank you, man.
17:24Thanks for spending Monday with us, buddy.
