JP, BMitch, and callers debate whether Washington should make a coaching change after a horrific tie.
Transcript
00:00I thought this was pretty strong commentary from a guy like Schefter.
00:04And I want to have a conversation based on Schefter's thoughts.
00:10Coaching equivalent of what the Giants went through back in the late 70s
00:14when they had the fumble at the end of the game.
00:16And the next day, the Giants fired their offensive coordinator.
00:20And at the end of the season, they fired their head coach, John McVay,
00:24Sean McVay's grandfather.
00:25There were consequences.
00:27And we don't know when it'll be, but I would imagine in time
00:30there are going to be consequences from this game.
00:34Consequences for this game.
00:36The people I've checked with, I'm expecting nothing to happen.
00:40I don't think Blau's getting fired.
00:42That doesn't strike me as a DQ move to fire the DC at this point.
00:46Even last year when things were going absolutely sideways with Joe Witt,
00:51he didn't fire him.
00:52He demoted him and made him move upstairs,
00:54and he wasn't calling the plays anymore, but he didn't fire him.
00:57I don't think anyone is getting fired.
01:00No, I don't think the comparisons of those two different games make sense anyway.
01:04You know, and that guy fumbled the ball and gave him a touchdown.
01:10I think it was Herm Edwards might have returned that touchdown.
01:14Once Herm Edwards.
01:16Those are two totally different things.
01:19And that's the part of reporting I don't like,
01:24where you're sensationalizing a situation by having one that was very drastic,
01:30to bring up another one.
01:31It was very, very dis-whatever yesterday.
01:39I couldn't stand it.
01:40But it wasn't like that game.
01:42No.
01:42By no stretch of the imagination.
01:45I do not think.
01:47Now listen, there is no rule, ordinance, county zoning law
01:51that precludes the commanders from getting hot down the stretch here.
01:55They have 12 games left.
01:57They could win nine of them.
01:59And all of a sudden, things are going to look very different, right?
02:04I feel and fear you can't outrun that game yesterday, though, if you're Quinn.
02:11You only outrun it if you go on a streak.
02:14Right.
02:14But, like, barring winning, they have 12 left.
02:19You go 9-3 down the stretch, gets you to 10-6-1.
02:25That would be a hell of a finish.
02:27Sure.
02:28Like, I mean, is it possible?
02:31Certainly.
02:33At San Fernando on a Monday night, I was there when the Eagles were undefeated.
02:38And, I don't even, was that the football team that went up there
02:41and beat Philly Monday night up there?
02:44Like, crazy things happen in this league.
02:46Dallas just lost to an 0-4 Tampa team at home.
02:48Totally.
02:48So, I'm not going to rule out winning in San Fran.
02:52I don't think it's very likely.
02:53That team is loaded.
02:54You're back home against Philly.
02:56They got a lot of injuries on their team, too.
02:58They just, what they did last night, they played Seattle extra tough.
03:03But they got injuries on that squad, too.
03:05And I think Washington has to go into a game and not make mistakes.
03:10And those mistakes, I mean, is stop.
03:13I can't stand lining up wrong, legal shifts, false starts.
03:20Those things piss me the hell off.
03:23And they keep happening.
03:24And they have to stop those.
03:25And that's on coaching, too.
03:27It's on players?
03:27That's on players, 100%.
03:29But if the same player keeps doing it, and the coach keeps putting him out there, then
03:34that's on the coach.
03:37Adam Schefter's talking about consequences.
03:40Do you believe we've reached a point where there should be consequences?
03:44Brian?
03:44My man Mark and Largo's on the phone.
03:47I imagine he is passionate.
03:49Hello, Mark.
03:50How are you?
03:53Believe it or not, no, I'm not.
03:56I think, look, I really felt bad today, Quinn, after yesterday's game.
04:05You know, everybody has been chiming him ever since the 28-3 game, Super Bowl.
04:11And then you have this.
04:13I think what's critical for him is they've got to come out.
04:17If they play hard next week, I think they'll beat San Francisco.
04:20I'm just a firm believer.
04:21Because I don't buy the 49ers.
04:23I know the 49ers are 5-0.
04:25They've got a lot of injuries.
04:26I think they have to win next week.
04:29They have to win.
04:30I don't want this good showing.
04:33If you can go 2-3-1 into the bye, you look pretty good.
04:39Because the schedule, believe it or not, against teams that if J.D. 5 is playing,
04:45you have a chance.
04:48But, B, I've got to tell you something, man.
04:51I'm really starting to worry about Durante's defense, man.
04:55Because I think for the second half in a row, really the third game in a row,
05:01I mean, in the second half, New York didn't punch the ball.
05:08And I'm a little concerned about that, how people are figuring out his blitzes.
05:14And he doesn't have a counter to that.
05:16That's the one thing I'm a little concerned about.
05:19They didn't blitz in the fourth quarter.
05:21They didn't blitz.
05:21They didn't blitz at all when they got up to 27-13.
05:24Yeah.
05:25At all.
05:26I think he should keep blitzing at that moment.
05:29I would blitz every down three – I would do what Minnesota does, blitz every down.
05:34You get Trey Amos back, blitz every down, go from there.
05:38That's what Greg Williams used to do, blitz every down.
05:40That's your best-case scenario because you've got to work well with five.
05:44As long as five is upright, then five's not going to feel like he has to do everything.
05:49Yesterday, I think – I honestly think for the first time Jaden was playing,
05:53he felt like I didn't have to do – I mean, I ran for these touchdowns.
05:56But we had this game comfortably until the defense just stopped blitzing,
06:01which I just don't understand.
06:03Was that okay, JP?
06:05It was great.
06:06I mean, you're right.
06:08The Giants' possessions in the second half of this game yesterday,
06:12field goal, touchdown, touchdown, touchdown, fourth quarter, end of the quarter.
06:18And what I find interesting is when you look at everybody was that brain pop
06:23for Jaden, Blau, and Dan Quinn, okay, that's fine, well, and good.
06:29I give Jaden 10%, 20% for each for Blau and Quinn.
06:33But I give 50% for Jeronke Jones.
06:35Because when you have a 14-point lead, you're often – anytime, Brian, you know this,
06:41anytime you score 27 points, you're supposed to win that game.
06:45Oh, yeah.
06:46I agree with that.
06:4727 points, you're supposed to win that game.
06:48If your defense doesn't do the job, that's one now.
06:52Now, we can sit up here and talk about Jaden, Dan,
06:55and we can talk about David Blau, who was blowing the face.
06:58And maybe that – yes, it would have saved the day for that.
07:02The bigger problem is when you're playing teams like Seattle – I mean, not Seattle,
07:06San Francisco and the Rams, you've got to keep doing what got you there.
07:12You just can't stop.
07:14So that's all I want to say, man.
07:18I'm a little concerned about that defense.
07:20I'm a little concerned about that.
07:21Appreciate the call, Mark.
07:22Thanks, buddy.
07:24I think it's a reasonable time to be concerned.
07:27It's a reasonable time to be concerned.
07:28But I think one thing I can throw out there, and I think I can do this,
07:33a lot of conversations I had in second halves of games,
07:37and it's not just one person that made the decision.
07:40How are you going to approach some stuff?
07:45Totally.
07:45Maybe – like, if you say, hey, let's back off – if the head coach says,
07:48let's back off the blitz, we don't want to give up any big shots,
07:51and then they just carve you up underneath.
07:54I don't know.
07:55I mean, dude, the numbers tell a story.
07:58In the second half of games, they've given up at least 20 points
08:03in the last four games.
08:04Mm-hmm.
08:05But the thing that's not put in that, too,
08:07how many points did we score in the second half of the games?
08:11Against the Colts, I think it was a field goal.
08:14Okay.
08:15If you start looking at the amount we give up and the amount we score,
08:19that is not the complimentary football you want to see.
08:23You don't want to see yourself giving up and your offense not scoring.
08:26If your offense scored, it means it kept the ball a little bit longer,
08:29which gave you time to get healthier, get a little more –
08:34Three and outs start piling up.
08:36Yeah, you begin to get a little bit more refreshed.
08:38Then you can do some stuff, but it's a lot of things that go into it.
08:42When we look at it just one-sided at one point,
08:46we can write anything we want to write,
08:48but you've got to know the whole story of why things are such a way.
08:51If you're on hold, stay there.
08:53Phone lines open the remainder of the program.
08:55It's B. Mitchell Finley.
