Will it be Sam LaPorta or Brian Branch?
Transcript
00:01coming up at eight o'clock i can't believe what i saw at the grocery store are people really buying
00:05this stuff it's everywhere good morning 97 one jim costa john jansen heather park got gov and
00:12greg behind the glass got the debrinket deal done last night finally some good news for the wings
00:16keeping good players actually paying modern prices john your question was who's next yeah
00:23and i think the the obvious ones that everybody we've been talking about for a while we just
00:29wanted to see him healthy we've seen sam laporta healthy and we've got some news on him not
00:33breaking news today or anything new but it is that there's a stalemate and it's been reported but a
00:41little bit refuted that hey they're not going to pick up contract talks until after the season or
00:45they're not going to at least have things going on during the season um and laporta had maybe a little
00:51bit of a different take that they're just more at a stalemate than anything else but it's also brian
00:56branch and you're not going to get branch any type of an extension until you actually see him play and
01:03it's not just one game you're going to need to see him over the course of months yeah so do
01:11they get
01:11both of these guys done in season potentially if i push you to prioritize one branch or laporta branch
01:17um i think it's it's it's never easy to replace pro bowl players but i think it's easier to
01:27maybe get a couple of guys that can do what laporta does versus anybody that can do what branch
01:33should be able to continue to do i'm torn i think you're right because this team needs help on defense
01:38much more than offense but laporta is a big cog in what they do you know as a running team
01:44and play
01:44action pass off of it and converting the fourth downs there's also just not a lot of those tight
01:49ends in college anymore the guys who are both inline blockers and vertical threats you kind of
01:55have to get either or you know iowa has one every other year but but they're not always laporta
02:00you know um that's the concern is replacing that type of player right um but you can't you can get
02:12that
02:12by committee you can get a guy that's a a blocker and and you know maybe it makes you a
02:16little bit
02:17predictable uh offensively but there's enough weapons um and and i love sam laporta i i don't
02:23want this to come across as you know sam laporta is no good i heard this morning on the ticket
02:28jansen
02:28was packing his bags um it's just a matter of where do you where are you going to get the
02:32most value for
02:32your dollars and it it's clearly going to be what brian branch brings to this defense and some of it
02:39is
02:39yeah it's the safety position without having kirby joseph there but it's also because brian
02:47branch is very versatile he can play more than one position and he can play those positions in a unique
02:53way if you want a comparison i think the franchise tag numbers are very similar safety and tight end
02:58uh tight end is like 15 it's going to go up safety is right around 20 yeah and they paid
03:04kirby joseph
03:05um his aav was 21 and a quarter um the only guys that are paid more at this time are
03:11kyle hamilton
03:12uh for baltimore he's at 25 derwin james at just a little bit above him 25 too so safeties are
03:19valued
03:19a little more across the league this team needs help in the back end of their defense more than any
03:23other
03:24area if i could only keep one it would be branch now brad's going to try to keep both that's
03:28been
03:29his mo the whole time well at the loss of adding in other areas right and some of it may
03:34just come
03:35down to what does this what does this front office what does this coaching staff value more and to
03:40this point it's it's been offense 248-539-9797 this texter says um laporta needs to be the next one
03:48signed
03:49in our city rake straw is next brad in the kitchen
03:56pretty good uh i don't think there's a detroit athlete that deserves a massive extension i'm not
04:01paying branch or laporta because the positions aren't valuable and easily replaceable the other
04:06three teams don't have any good players at all easily replaceable how has okay now maybe brad
04:13has just not done a good job of replacing or finding some guys to play in this in the in
04:18the absence
04:19of branch and kirby joseph but you're talking about guys that are the best at what they do
04:27let me throw a curveball name at you here i would love to see what you guys think about this
04:34no max clark like mcgonigle get a good decent rate long term because you're buying
04:43in the future yeah i'd support it i would too but it would probably be a 55 45 what's your
04:49concern
04:49it's just too early i'd like to see just a little more consistency i guess time
04:57what about dingler uh they have team control for like three more years and he's a catcher
05:01and they got catcher depth you gotta play hardball he deserves it i mean if you're yeah
05:08but if you're trying to lock guys up at a lower rate now then you would be in three years
05:15but what
05:15if i told you and i have to double check this i'm just playing devil devil's advocate on that what
05:20if
05:20i told you and i have to double check it that torkelson had a higher ops than dylan dingler last
05:24season
05:27that's how ugly it got towards the back end so let's let's throw the lightning right out there
05:31extend torque yeah not what i'm saying there you go well i thought you were gonna stop for riley
05:36that's what i thought i thought i heard you say i mean if i'm the one that says laporta is
05:40no good
05:40you are the one that wants to stump for for torkelson getting a seven-year deal costa had
05:45the brink's truck outside torx place i wouldn't green because you made a trade for an outfielder
05:50and i don't i think you play hardball green you've gone far enough you you should have done it sooner
05:55if you're gonna buy into green uh speaking of green spartan tickets gave him away our winner
05:59today was ben in northville he's gonna see michigan state and arkansas at little caesar's arena on
06:05november 26th courtesy of 313 presents giving away a pair every day this week in our eight o'clock
06:11hour we have red wing tickets to give away for their game on thursday night stoney will be in the
06:17building i'll be in the building and the flyers will be in town win that pair of tickets listen for
06:23motown philly by boys to men when you hear that in the eight o'clock hour call in win a
06:29pair of
06:29tickets tickets and game info nhl.com slash red wings awesome busy weekend for stoney what else
06:37he got going ditching me on saturday to go to get drunk at the michigan game he said oh all
06:42right
06:42yeah i'll see stoney at the tailgate i'm sure he always stops by yeah uh-huh sloshed or what
06:47no no not at that time i said he said he won't be there saturday i said what are you
06:52doing he said
06:53i'll go to the michigan game so and you just inserted no that's what he said i was like all
06:59right have fun
07:02it's uh penn state week is his sister in town
07:07nobody does he does have i think it's his nephew that is a either a penn state grad or goes
07:14to penn
07:15state yeah i think he also thought air quotes nephew i think he also thought this might be a bigger
07:21game
07:21and yeah just maybe planning on going to it already and just hanging on to a little bit of that
07:26excitement maybe that's a must win so so he's going to yeah going to watch two pennsylvania games in
07:32three days i thought he was a detroit sports fan oh boy turning his back on the city a couple
07:39texts
07:39next to get paid ron holland signed mr margins uh another says i don't think there's any big
07:45extension coming for a while wings and pistons are locked in i wouldn't pay laporta or branch
07:49wouldn't pay riley green and clark is controllable for a long time i'm really interested to see what
07:56the impact of brian branch is on this defense when he comes back because i think while this year he
08:01may not be the same player he was prior to the injury he will eventually get back to that i'm
08:07looking more at the 27 season but the impact that he will have on this defense because especially
08:14because the secondary is has been so bad now they okay whatever you want to say that they did against
08:20the the cardinals it was a step in the right direction i don't know that there's consistency there
08:26but brian branch could be that guy that really helps out the production of this defense eight
08:32o'clock hour the power surge 8 35 coming up next are you buying this stuff
08:35you
