00:00So, Brian, Curtis with a question before the break.
00:02Curtis, go ahead.
00:03No, just your thoughts on the disastrous end for the commanders
00:06and who you put the blame on in that situation.
00:10Look, I don't know what's being said.
00:13To me, it didn't seem like Jaden understood the situation.
00:16Now, look, I'm not one to talk.
00:17I actually obviously had that mismanagement of the clock in Kansas City in 2020
00:23where I thought we had a timeout,
00:24but it didn't even seem like Jaden thought they had a timeout.
00:27So I wasn't really sure.
00:29First and foremost, I would have just kicked it right then and there.
00:32I think Dan Coyne has already said that.
00:33Secondly, if you're going to run a play,
00:36it's got to be communicated from David Blau to Jaden.
00:40Look, if it's not there, just throw it in the dirt.
00:42We don't want to hold the ball and run it.
00:44And on top of all of that, even with the play, how it played out,
00:48he goes down and he's just laying there on the ground,
00:51and it didn't seem like anybody really understood what needed to happen.
00:55And the biggest thing, the biggest blunder of them all,
00:58and we practiced this, was in any of those situations,
01:00the best thing you could do was get the ball and hand it to the official.
01:04And Bill used to make fun of the official.
01:06He's like, look, these guys aren't great athletes like you.
01:08Don't try to toss it to them.
01:10They're going to get it on the ground.
01:11They're going to kick it around.
01:12We would practice that in practice.
01:15One of the equipment managers would come and be the official.
01:18And if you even toss the football from two feet away,
01:21Bill was going to make you take a lap.
01:22Like, hand the ball to the official.
01:24So there was such a lack of urgency that I don't think it was really communicated.
01:28And on top of all of that, I would just say, you know, for Jaden,
01:32like, you have to check the game clock before the play.
01:35And the biggest thing that I was wondering is,
01:38how are you just laying there on the field?
01:39Like, do you think that someone's going to call a timeout for you?
01:42Why wouldn't you?
01:43It'd be one thing if I saw him trying to call a timeout,
01:44be like, oh, that's what happened to me.
01:46I don't think they understood the situation
01:49and what they were trying to accomplish.
01:50I love that about Bill, that you would literally practice that in practice.
01:56Yeah, I told you.
01:57You practice everything.
01:58Yeah, that's why after the Super Bowl,
02:00when we talked about early in the week when I caught that last pass,
02:03my initial thing was run it right to the official and hand it to him
02:09because these are the things that we worked on
02:10because you don't want them kicking around the ball.
02:13And Brian will tell you this, defensive players,
02:15they're taught lay on top of a guy.
02:17Don't let him get up too easy when the clock's –
02:19and that's why, Brian, I put it more on the coaching staff
02:23because Sean made a good point.
02:25Before the drive even started, they knew that they had no timeout.
02:29So take us into the helmet a little bit.
02:32Is he saying this to you like every time on the walkie-talkie before every play?
02:39Hey, we have no timeouts left.
02:40We have no timeouts left.
02:42Just be alerted.
02:43And then calling the play?
02:44Because I feel like as a quarterback, you've got a lot of stuff going on
02:48and somebody's talking in your ear and you've got to think about the play clock
02:52and you've got to think about the play call.
02:54But is he reminding you, the offensive coordinator,
02:57every time after the play, like real quickly, hey, don't forget,
03:01we've got no timeouts?
03:03Yeah, some do.
03:03I mean, the good ones that I had, obviously Josh and Kyle
03:06would always be on top of that, Kyle Shanahan I'm talking about,
03:08and would always, before the play call, would be like, all right.
03:11And you know, Wiggy, for us in New England,
03:13because we had time to practice all these, we had code words for every scenario.
03:17So like, you know, for instance, the Baltimore pass in Rio,
03:22we would call that a church situation because in church,
03:24you've got to get down on the knee and pray.
03:26And so we would say, hey, Josh, we're like, all right,
03:29it's a church situation here.
03:30We catch it.
03:31We're down.
03:31We're calling a timeout.
03:32Like, he would always remind you before the play call.
03:35And then don't forget, this cuts off at 15 seconds.
03:38So it's not like he can talk to you, you know,
03:40once he gets the play call in, it's usually about 15 seconds
03:43and you're on your own.
03:44So you've got to have some awareness.
03:46But yeah, the best play callers, I think to me,
03:49they have an awareness around that.
03:50They're reminding you.
03:51And as a quarterback, you want as much information as you can have
03:54going to the line of scrimmage.
03:55So I don't know, like I said, I don't know what was communicated to Jade.
03:59And it just, to me,
04:00the lack of urgency to even just to lay on the ground and then kick the ball
04:05around, that's what cost them a game.
04:07Brian, a texter on the Subaru of New England text line,
04:10since you've looked at the film,
04:12would like to know your thoughts on Caleb Lomu in that game Sunday.
04:16Yeah, look, I'm not, I'm no O-line expert.
04:18So I always defer to my podcast co-host, David Andrews.
04:21And he goes, you know what?
04:23I saw him go in and I pulled my notebook out.
04:25And by the end of the game, I didn't write his name down once,
04:27which is a great thing for a rookie left tackle coming in.
04:30I thought he came in and handled it really well.
04:32Won the one-on matchup that he had with Max Crosby.
04:37And so I thought he looked good.
04:38I mean, I really did.
04:39And I think this is the one thing we know with Will Campbell,
04:42similar injury as last year.
04:44Don't rush him back.
04:45Like let Caleb Lomu go out there and get some good experience,
04:48because you're going to need him down the long run.
04:50And obviously Josh will do a good job of protecting him on certain plays.
04:54Even, even the first touchdown of the game to pop Douglas, you know,
04:59Max Crosby is over there lined up on Morgan Moses and he's getting a chip
05:03and they're going to hammer him down into the interior of the line.
05:05Like Josh knows how to handle those situations.
05:08And I'm sure going into this week against the jets with a guy like David
05:11Bailey, who had three sacks last week,
05:13like that will be first and foremost on all of the play calls is if it's a
05:17longer developing task, where's David Bailey?
05:19How do we get extra help to hit?
05:21Brian, it was nice to get to watch some of the game with you on Sunday.
05:24Yeah.
05:25Quick.
05:27I've heard everything from CMT.
05:29That's right.
05:29That was great.
05:30I appreciate you, Brian.
05:31One of the time was the,
05:32shine was the big fella in case you don't remember.
05:35Thanks.
05:36Thanks.
05:37Come on now.
05:38Chalk talk.
05:40You guys talk all 22s up there in the suite.
05:42We were talking all kinds of stuff.
05:44And one of the things I noticed, Brian, was like the,
05:47the new wrinkle,
05:48I guess you could call it the,
05:50where they put the double sidecar tight ends next to Drake may in the
05:53pistol.
05:53What has Josh done the last couple of weeks to kind of smooth out the
05:56offense and make things run even easier for Drake?
05:59Well,
06:00I think it's just first and foremost,
06:02people got to understand this is a game plan offense,
06:04right?
06:04What does that mean?
06:05Well,
06:05we are going to go into the week against the defense.
06:08We're playing with a very specific game plan.
06:10What we ran last week against Buffalo may not be a
06:12not be the best plays against the Raiders.
06:14And so you saw that obviously you lose Gilliam.
06:16So you've got to be able to figure out how to get base defense on the
06:19field.
06:19So you put the two tight ends out there and,
06:21and just,
06:21so we're talking about personnel groupings when,
06:24when 12 personnel goes out,
06:26that's one back,
06:26two tight ends,
06:27two,
06:27two receivers.
06:28The defense doesn't really know how they're going to line up.
06:30They could assume that it's going to be in a wing.
06:32And as you mentioned,
06:33you called it the sidecar.
06:34It was a very unique formation and it's just trying to make the defense
06:38communicate.
06:38This is something they'd never seen before.
06:40How are they going to react?
06:41What coverage are they going to play?
06:42And so I think Josh has done a good job and he's always,
06:44in my opinion,
06:45done a good job of figuring out what,
06:47what does the defense do?
06:48Well,
06:49how do we want to avoid that?
06:50What do they do poorly?
06:51How do we want to attack that?
06:52And you saw that,
06:53I mean,
06:53he clearly went into this game feeling like they were going to be good in
06:56pass protection because there was some longer developing routes.
06:59that Drake was able to throw the ball down the field.
07:02And so,
07:02you know,
07:03the big,
07:03the big storyline is always like,
07:05you know,
07:05how much motion are they using?
07:07Well,
07:07motion is,
07:08is it great if you're using it for a purpose?
07:10And so I thought there was some plays,
07:12particularly the screen pass to Hunter Henry,
07:14where they motioned out the back late,
07:16kind of create some separation in the front,
07:19get it to Hunter Henry,
07:20the first touchdown pass of,
07:21of the game.
07:22They send the back out quickly,
07:23try to get some,
07:24you know,
07:24splash the water over there,
07:26get the defense kind of moving left,
07:27throw it back.
07:28Right.
07:28So he's always going to do a good job of that.
07:31And this week,
07:31you know,
07:32Aaron Glenn and the jets,
07:33Aaron Glenn loves to play man.
07:34So I would assume this week will be a lot different because we're going to
07:37see more man coverage.
07:38So there'll be some routes and some concepts that are really dedicated to,
07:43all right,
07:43what man matchup do we want to work on?
07:45Is it Hunter Henry with the safety on them?
07:47Is it the slot receiver?
07:48Is it guy outside on a corner?
07:49So it's very game plan oriented.
07:52And what you see last week could be totally different this week.
07:55Sean,
07:55I love the sidecar.
07:57Anything else concern you when it comes to this jets team?
08:01No,
08:01I mean,
08:01look,
08:02the reality is,
08:02is when you look at them defensively,
08:04there's three guys you got to look after.
08:05It's David Bailey,
08:07Demario Davis,
08:08and Mika Fitzpatrick.
08:09Mika is going to be back there.
08:09He's a ball hawk.
08:10He's going to be looking.
08:11He's going to be reading Drake's eyes.
08:12Like that's the one guy I'd be concerned about in the secondary.
08:16Demario Davis,
08:17you know,
08:17the ultimate pro in the middle.
08:19And then David Bailey,
08:20who obviously was a high draft pick and is coming on.
08:22I think he's got five sacks totally at three last week.
08:25So you got to handle those three guys.
08:27And then offensively,
08:28Gino is actually playing really good football.
08:30So how can you disrupt him?
08:32They're going to rely on Braylon Allen in the running game.
08:34He's a big physical back.
08:35So everybody's going to rally to the,
08:36to the ball.
08:37And then Garrett Wilson.
08:38I mean,
08:38those are the,
08:39those are the six guys.
08:40If you handle those six guys,
08:42you walk away with a win.
08:43And I think that's the,
08:45that's the beauty of like these game plan,
08:47not just offense,
08:48but defense as well.
08:49And so I think you're going to see a defensive plan that tries to
08:51pressure Gino,
08:52try to force him into some,
08:54some bad plays,
08:55stop the run,
08:56and then like take away Garrett Wilson.
08:58I mean,
08:58that's the biggest thing.
08:59And they've done the defenses.
09:01I mean,
09:01I know I'm kind of like the resident offensive guy to talk to,
09:04but you've got to give flowers to the defense because they have played
09:08phenomenal in spite of all the injuries.
09:10The two young guys,
09:12Ponder and,
09:12and Akis,
09:13I mean,
09:14they're playing really,
09:15really well.
09:16And Zach core just is dialing up a really good scheme right now.
09:19All right,
09:20Brian Twitch chat would like to wish you a belated happy 41st.
09:24Was your,
09:25was your birthday yesterday?
09:27Yeah,
09:27it was yesterday.
09:28All right.
09:28Happy birthday.
09:28Happy birthday.
09:30Do anything,
09:31do anything special?
09:32Once you get over 40,
09:32it's like,
09:33does anyone even care anymore?
09:34I know.
09:35I am.
09:36I'm terrified of hitting 40.
09:39Yeah.
09:39Yeah.
09:40It's my daughter's birthday tomorrow.
09:41So now we've always,
09:42you know,
09:42now that her birthday is so close to mine,
09:44it's the focus has always shifted to her the whole week.
09:46So I always enjoy that.
09:48I should know.
09:48I know.
09:48I love J aqui,
09:48I love J.
09:48Yeah.
