00:00How long is too long to wait for a Godzilla fighting game?
00:03Well, here we are going on over a decade since the last major Godzilla game came out,
00:08and we finally were able to get our hands on the demo for Godzilla Destroy All Monsters Melee Remastered.
00:15So how's it feeling so far? And does it seem like it was worth the wait?
00:19Well, let's delve into it.
00:21I've been fairly open about my negativity towards the new menu, the cartoony vibes, and the comic book effects,
00:28so let's see if the actual demo for the game managed to change how I feel towards any of that.
00:33And since I've already talked a good bit about how I feel on the new design layout for the game,
00:37I'll keep my thoughts on that aspect of the demo for later on in the video if you want to
00:42stay till that point.
00:44But keeping it real, let's chat about the important stuff.
00:47We finally got to play the game for Godzilla's sake, and this is how it feels so far in demo
00:52form.

00:54I think it's fitting we talk about the first thing you see when you start the demo, the cinematic intro.
01:00Now, old school fans remember how epic the intro was to the original Destroy All Monsters Melee.
01:06Even to this day, it's a well-made introduction to the game you're about to play.
01:10It sets the tone and gets you amped to go into battle.
01:14So how does the remaster hold up?
01:16Well, it looks great.
01:18The monsters and environments look awesome with their modern, flashy, new CGI.
01:23And the intro does keep some of the same pacing and overall structuring as the original,
01:28so it does somewhat hit those same emotions.
01:31Just somewhat, though.
01:33My honest take on the intro is that it was rushed.
01:36I just watched the original intro and then the new one right before this,
01:40and the new one just feels like the microwave meal version of the original.
01:44Sure, it has similar structure in how the monsters show up on screen,
01:48but all the fun, real-world elements like the humans reacting to the monsters,
01:53and all the scenes of the military attacking them has been cut.
01:57You could say this doesn't matter, and I guess in the grand scheme of things, it doesn't.
02:02But once again, this is a remaster of a classic, iconic game,
02:05so it is worth noting how this new cinematic is a rather boring, simplified version of the original.
02:11It's just a montage of shots of the monsters now, and doesn't have that cinema-like energy to it.
02:16But this is just an intro cinematic,
02:19and ultimately something that will get skipped after the first few times people start the game,
02:24so it really shouldn't take away from the remaster.
02:27I would say this is more of an issue,
02:30but simplifying and taking a lot of the actual art factor out of how things are presented and made these
02:35days
02:36is sadly just normal.
02:38But enough of that, let's get to the meat of the video,
02:41the gameplay, the real important stuff.
02:43I had a good vibe about the gameplay after seeing all of the trailers.
02:47I could feel however I wanted about the new design aesthetic of the game,
02:51but the remaster seemed like it was going to nail the gameplay,
02:55and boy, did the hammer come down hard.
02:58The gameplay is awesome, guys.
03:00No nonsense, no ass-kissing here.
03:03It's just solid, good old-school gaming, man.
03:06The physics are extremely satisfying with all the combat.
03:10It's goofy and fun in all the right places,
03:12and super heavy and impactful in others.
03:15There's just this weight, this heaviness to the gameplay
03:18that you really feel when you strike your opponent or they hit you.
03:23Landing those heavy hits and seeing your opponent fly across the map,
03:27bounce off that ugly-ass barrier wall.
03:29You were supposed to fix this, Pipeworks.
03:31They bounce and just go flying again, then bang, they smack the ground,
03:35and it's just super satisfying.
03:38Especially with the new modern sound effects that have all that bass and power to them.
03:43I will mention how some of the sound effects do sound a bit out of place,
03:46like random stock noises or something,
03:49and they kind of take you out of the fight when you hear them,
03:52but I feel like over time, you won't really notice them as much.
03:56But right now, for the demo,
03:58hearing some Looney Tunes sounding effects for a 300-foot-tall Kaiju doesn't quite work.
04:03But pretty much all the other sound design in the demo is awesome, guys.
04:08It works flawless for the most part,
04:10with the old-school narrator and radio dialogue making a return.
04:13The gameplay movement is more smooth,
04:16and maybe a bit faster than the original game,
04:19maybe a bit too fast.
04:20The overall gameplay movement felt great,
04:23like you can really see the new animations
04:24and how they act more natural and look good, I think.
04:28But it did feel like the movement was maybe 10-15% faster than the original game.
04:34Maybe this is just my eyes fooling me,
04:36but I'm pretty sure the game just plays faster now,
04:39which adds up in this must-go-faster modern gaming world.
04:42It did make the game feel a bit like it was jerking the camera around a bit too much,
04:47but I think this is something people will get used to as they play more.
04:51Although, they might have to do something about the camera being constantly obstructed by buildings
04:56and how the camera struggles to center itself at times,
04:59because I can see that getting people's blood boiling
05:02if they are already stressing out during a sweaty match.
05:05And that faster gameplay and chaotic camera movement combined with what I felt like
05:10was a lot more common power-ups popping up on the maps
05:13did sort of seem a bit overstimulating at times.
05:16I was just watching, but there were times where there were so many sound effects,
05:21lines of dialogue, pop-up effects,
05:24that when combined with the larger in-your-face UI and faster gameplay,
05:28that I was like,
05:29yo, calm down with this shit.
05:30I think the game would benefit from lowering the amount of power-ups that spawn in.
05:35I am going to get sick and tired of hearing Mothra airstrike otherwise.
05:40I'd rather there be less power-ups and more external environmental factors though,
05:44because they've done great in this regard.
05:47The original game had a few tanks and attack choppers that would fire at you,
05:52but now they seem more prevalent and like true obstacles to overcome,
05:56which may become an issue for some players when you take this new feature into account.
06:01The game actually has button combos now.
06:04All I remember the old game being was a true button smasher,
06:08a race to see who could hit the X button at the right time the most times.
06:12But now you're going to actually have to memorize or get lucky with button combos
06:16to perform at your monster's fullest potential.
06:19Now these aren't like some of those fighting game combos
06:22that you need a full-on doctorate degree in to manage to land.
06:25These combos are like AAB over AA, nothing really challenging,
06:30but then again it's something more than a mindless button smasher.
06:33In the end, as long as you button mash with style,
06:35you will probably manage to land a few of these combos.
06:38And hey, maybe it's better to just spam the tail swipe 45 times anyway.
06:43Apparently you can taunt now too, so I expect to see some proper mischief,
06:48which I think we're going to see often now because with the new faster gameplay
06:52that still retains the old school classic simple basic monster movement,
06:57but now combined with combos,
06:59could really allow good players to utilize all of that and do some crazy stuff.
07:04Overall, I'm stoked for the combat and feel for the remaster.
07:07It's about as perfect gameplay-wise as I could have expected,
07:11but how does the game perform?
07:13So far, so good.
07:14We've had no issues outside of a few minor glitches like this tail wiggle thing.
07:19What is this, Pipeworks?
07:20Kind of funny though.
07:22I don't know about consoles because the demo is only for PC,
07:26which is kind of a bummer, not gonna lie.
07:28Shout out to Bladeless for capturing gameplay for us
07:31while Al and I watched like proud parents.
07:33But on PC, we experienced a smooth, stable game throughout testing
07:37with zero framerate issues and all that.
07:40And I'm not a big game settings guy,
07:42but I know a lot of modern gamers obsess over the settings in their game.
07:46So here's a sneak peek into that.
07:48Just your basic stuff, nothing crazy.
07:50Other than the combo tab,
07:51that's still crazy to me to have in Destroy All Monsters Melee.
07:55Melee.
07:56So the gameplay, pretty much a 101 true remaster from the original game.
08:00But what about the visuals?
08:01What about the presentation from these new devs?
08:05Let's take a look.
08:06I had faith this game's base visuals wouldn't let us down.
08:10And I'm happy to say I was right, for the most part.
08:13The demo is by far the best looking version of this game we've seen so far.
08:18Literally every time this game is showcased,
08:20it gets like twice as good looking.
08:22And you rarely see that in modern gaming.
08:25Doesn't matter what type of game it is.
08:26The Kaiju models look frickin' sharp man,
08:30and they move and feel just as good if not better than the original game.
08:33And the maps feel alive and don't take away from the combat,
08:37but really they add to it.
08:39With some neat returning and new real-time environmental destruction thrown into the mix.
08:44Add on the new changes to the weather and time of day called forecasts,
08:48and you can swap each map from clear to moonlit, hazy, and my personal favorite, overcast.
08:55These all look great, but especially overcast.
08:57This is what I'm talking about.
08:59Oh, and each map has different zones, like segments you can fight on,
09:03so really just even more options there.
09:05If you think about all the maps and zones and forecasts this game has to offer,
09:10I don't know, I can't count that high.
09:12There's a lot of options.
09:14These maps have a nice sense of depth of field too,
09:17like they do feel like large maps, and that's pretty cool, I think.
09:21Guys, I'm trying to look past how I don't really like the UI and comic book effects for this game.
09:26I'm a purist for the old game, and I miss when things were more cool, guys.
09:30Give me a break.
09:31But getting to really see the game now,
09:33once I can manage to get away from that stuff,
09:36I really gotta say this game's graphics are super smooth.
09:40It looks great.
09:41One day, we will get a more movie accurate level of graphical design in a Godzilla game.
09:45It's gotta happen.
09:47But this isn't a bad looking game, and I can accept that now.
09:51And there is actually an option now to take off the colored circle underneath your monster at least,
09:56so that's good.
09:58One less distraction taking away from the game's visuals.
10:01Let's talk about that menu now.
10:04It's better.
10:05I still think the direction the original game had was way cooler than this,
10:09and I would have loved to have seen it with this remaster with modern tech.
10:14But what we did end up getting was better than what they were teasing us with prior to the demo.
10:19The super colorful menu has been toned down to be more neutral and muted.
10:25Which doesn't make it look like the original, but it's a lot better this way than before.
10:29At least now it has the apocalyptic energy that the original game had,
10:33and it does help make all that UI on screen stand out and look better.
10:38I feel like maybe the community had a part to play in this quick fix, you could say,
10:42so give yourselves a round of applause.
10:45This next part though is actually a nice improvement from the original game.
10:49I like these 3D models of the monsters and how you can spin them around and all that.
10:53This is a super cool addition to the game that's a nice bonus for super fans
10:57who want to check out all the details in the models.
11:00And they even give you a cool little bit of lore for the monster,
11:03which I love lore, give this video a like if you love Godzilla lore.
11:07And you can see that the monsters now have 4 ability meters, classic stuff here.
11:13Attack, defense, speed, and power.
11:15You're built for speed monsters, you're all-around champions, and you're tanks.
11:20They even added in buffs and nerfs to the monsters, which I don't know how I feel about this.
11:26I'm the type of player who hates inventories and feeling like I'm doing a grocery list with my games.
11:31Like I want a game, not worry about all this work-feeling crap.
11:35So I do hope it's not that big of a factor and more of a single-player added motive
11:40to keep playing the game and working your monster's skill sets around.
11:44I could see that maybe adding replayability to the game,
11:47so I'm just gonna have to wait before I get too harsh about this new feature.
11:51I just need to play the game over time and see how it goes.
11:54And you will be able to upgrade your monster in single-player modes
11:58with basic boosts like plus 100 health or having your energy recharge at 150% speed.
12:05But like I said, only in single-player modes, not multiplayer, that will be an even playing field.
12:11Speaking of the multiplayer, it's got a lot of potential.
12:13I really like the new four-player melee mode where you can have four monsters on screen at once duking
12:18it out.
12:19You can do this in a free-for-all or even a variation of teams.
12:23That mode is going to be a strong selling point with this game.
12:27Overall, the menu, really the entire game's presentation,
12:30still feels like they are trying to copy Giga Bash and steal some of their thunder
12:34since that's the go-to fighting monster game in recent times.
12:38And I wish they didn't feel like they needed to do that.
12:41Because they didn't.
12:42It kind of seems lazy and shady, just saying.
12:45But as soon as the gameplay starts, it's like those thoughts go away and it's just fun, man.
12:50This game is going to make for so many good times.
12:53I really don't want my negativity towards the visual identity of the game to take away from that.
12:59But there are areas for improvement outside of design preference.
13:03We trashed the beam attacks in our other coverage videos before this.
13:07But they really have gotten a lot better now.
13:10The attacks do need more of a visual punch to them where you can really feel that impact force, though.
13:16I'd like to see that change happen.
13:18Rage attacks still don't look as cool as the original,
13:21but have progressively gotten better every time we see the game.
13:24The overall comic book effects just kind of take away from the seriousness of a kaiju fight.
13:31Even the Showa era was serious with its attack presentation with blood and all of that.
13:36Not that the game needs blood or anything for it to be good, even.
13:39We don't need gore.
13:41What about the new destruction mode?
13:43It's pretty bare bones, guys.
13:46It, to me, just feels like a training mode where people can practice combos and not much more.
13:51But that's not entirely lame, because now you can train with a purpose instead of just sparring an AI over
13:58and over again.
13:59To make this game more impactful, full four-player online matches and team-based modes should be front and center
14:06or at least an option in this game.
14:08I really think the game will need that if it wants to last for more than a few months.
14:13A co-op tag team ladder mode where players have to unite and work together to beat the entire roster
14:18would be super fun and give players a reason to replay the game multiple times with different combinations of monsters
14:24trying to find the ones who work the best together.
14:26Having a mode that's not fully competitive will help extend the game's replayability.
14:32From my experience playing a lot of fighting games over the years, people stop playing fighting games once they know
14:38they can't beat the one sweaty player in the group.
14:41Like, what's the point, you know?
14:42So having some form of teamwork mode would go a long way here.
14:47And I think just more customization to the monsters, the maps, and modes would do a lot of work here.
14:53The font is too clean and basic, and the graphics and the UI are blocky, ugly, and feel out of
14:59place with the game.
15:00It's too sticker-like, like it was smacked on the screen last minute.
15:04Taking that square-looking element to it out and making it blend more into the backdrops would help a lot.
15:11Even with all of that, I think the game is pretty good and shows signs of being kind of addicting.
15:16But if Pipeworks can take a look at any of these concerns over the remaster's lifespan, or prior to release
15:23even, and make some changes,
15:25I think we really have a solid Godzilla game here, remaster or not.
15:29It's gonna be fun.
15:30I do hope the full game comes with more features.
15:33It'd be cool to see a player's stat and leaderboard, cross-play, new maps, skins, and modes.
15:38And, which there are already signs that the game will have some new DLC, so expect to see more on
15:44that down the line.
15:46Godzilla Destroy All Monsters Melee Remastered is already looking and feeling like a good game.
15:52It's done what it had to do to be a fun game.
15:55And with a few relatively simple updates, it might actually ignite the Godzilla video game industry,
16:00and kickstart new projects that we can sink our claws into.
16:05But let's not get ahead of ourselves.
16:07Let's see how this game goes first.
16:09Godzilla Destroy All Monsters Melee Remastered drops very soon, this November 3rd.
16:15I'll be playing, and I might just see some of you in the arena.
16:18As always everyone, this has been Jacob, and I'll see y'all in the next one.
16:43We'll be playing, and I'll see you next time.
