01:20as we welcome you back to the U.S. Formula One Grand Prix at Indianapolis.
01:24Hello, everyone. I'm Bob Varsha, along with David Hobbs and Steve Matchett.
01:28Peter Windsor and Derek Daly are in the pit lane, and on the clock comes the Toyota of Ricardo Zonta,
01:34who has stepped in for the normal race driver in that car, Ralph Schumacher,
01:39who had a heavy accident yesterday afternoon and will not race this weekend's Grand Prix.
01:44Certainly a heavy responsibility to put on any young driver's shoulders.
01:4729 years old now, 36 Grand Prixs he's done over quite a few years.
01:51He started in 1999, didn't have a lot of luck, had some awful big crashes when equipment failed on him.
01:58One of which, of course, was yesterday when he had a left rear tire there,
02:00and luckily it was at that corner we've just seen, so he spun harmlessly to a halt,
02:03but a lot of hopes on young Zonta's shoulders.
02:07Just a few minutes after that, his teammate Schumacher also lost a left rear tire at top speed
02:12in turn one of the oval track configuration, turn 13 of this road course at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
02:19He clouded the wall.
02:20Schumacher appears to be okay, but he will not race this weekend in the Grand Prix.
02:26Both cars on Michelin tires.
02:28Michelin has a set of replacement tires in the air as we speak,
02:32and they hope to use them in the Grand Prix on Sunday,
02:35but that question is very, very much up in the air, you might say, as well.
02:41Off the final corner.
02:44Lunging at the line at speeds, approaching 200 miles an hour,
02:47plus Zonta, as the first man on track, sets the time to chase.
02:52He is on race fuel.

03:09As you heard, Montoya is now coming across.
03:12Juan Pablo Montoya has set fast time in this morning's opening 45-minute practice.
03:17As you see, heavy cloud overcast here at the Speedway.
03:20Track temperatures have come down.
03:22That 11.7 for Zonta is about as good as he's done all weekend, I think.
03:26And considering he's probably got race fuel on board, that is a pretty good time.
03:29Yeah, I wonder whether or not how much fuel they have got on board, David.
03:33Considering the problems that Michelin are experiencing with these tires,
03:35if they want to try and keep the load off these tires through that Turn 13,
03:40I wonder if the consensus is that the Michelin runners are running a three-stop strategy,
03:43running very little fuel to take the load off the car.
03:46Nevertheless, 216 miles an hour straight-line speed off Zonta.
03:50Track temperature now 108 degrees.
03:53It's gone off about 5 degrees since we came on air.
03:56Off to Hulman Strait.
03:57Hulman Boulevard, the normal configuration of Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
04:01And now the tightest turns on the course, down to first gear for most of the cars.
04:06Now Montoya lost out on that very first sector,
04:08but picked up quite a hefty amount in that centre sector.
04:12Oh, the second sector now.
04:13It goes to that desperate coming up to Turn 13,
04:17which is going to be Turn 1 for the Indy 5-under guys going the other way.
04:21A lot of load on those left tires.
04:25And he does it by 73 hundredths of a second.
04:28That's all.
04:30A huge contingent of fans from Montoya's native Columbia.
04:34And there's his father, Pablo, in the yellow shirt.
04:37An architect.

04:40As you see, locked up that left front Michelin a little bit.
04:46Montoya, second man on track because he was disqualified
04:49from last weekend's Canadian Formula 1 race
04:52for running the red light at the end of the pit lane after a stop.
04:55Bit of a lock up there.
04:57Flat spot in the tire just a little bit,
04:58but not much really to worry about.
04:59Carter Cain, the Indian driver coming out of the Jordan.
05:02He's been off the road an awful lot this weekend,
05:05sliding around because Carter Cain, a rookie here,
05:08never been here before.
05:10And Jordan, of course, one of these only three teams
05:12to be running Bridgestone tires.
05:15200 miles an hour for Carter Cain,
05:17so well down, like 11 miles an hour down and locking up.
05:22The other two Bridgestone runners,
05:24Ferrari, of course, their main number one team,
05:27and the Minardis.
05:33But these guys are really looking in the pound seat
05:36because whatever happens with the controversy
05:37over the Michelin tires,
05:39if there is going to be general consensus
05:41and an agreement to run these new tires
05:43from Michelin tomorrow,
05:44you can guarantee that somehow Bridgestone
05:47are going to come out on the top of this.
05:48Probably they will take the top six grid positions
05:50and everybody else will have to form up behind Bridgestone.
