00:00It's the saddest day in Formula 1's race in history.
00:03You know, I felt kind of sick from Madrid. I have to say, I've never been in a situation like
00:06this.
00:06Big mistake from Michelin.
00:08I'm very sorry to all the fans.
00:10Words simply fail you.
00:11Yeah, it's sad from Greece.
00:13I don't take any pleasure in this. This is not a race, it's a farce.
00:17Oh, man alive. Where did F1 go from here?
00:35Just two weeks after the six-car scandal that was the U.S. Formula 1 Grand Prix at the Indianapolis
00:41Motor Speedway,
00:42a series of meetings and a reckoning before the world governing body,
00:45the World Driving Championship tries to gather up its tattered credibility and continue with the 2005 season.
00:51Welcome to Speed Channel's coverage of Friday practice for round 10 of the 2005 campaign, the French Grand Prix.
00:58Hello, everybody. I'm Bob Varsha along with David Hobbs and Steve Matchett.
01:02The shock waves are still being felt throughout Formula 1.
01:06And in case you somehow missed the action, here's a recap starting with Formula 1's Bizarre Weekend in America.
01:14The trouble started in Friday morning practice when the Toyotas of both Riccardo Zonta and Ralph Schumacher suffered left rear
01:21Michelin tire failures.
01:23Extreme loading in Turn 13 was suspected, but after extensive investigations both in France and the USA,
01:30Michelin were unable to pinpoint the exact reason for the failures.
01:34The company thus informed the FIA on Saturday that in the interest of safety, they had advised their teams not
01:40to take part in the race unless the speeds in Turn 13 could be reduced.
01:44Several ideas were proposed to slow the cars.
01:48On race morning, a number of meetings were held to try and reach a consensus on a solution.
01:52But in the end, no compromise could be reached.
01:55As race time approached, the seven Michelin teams made their way out to the grid and all signs appeared to
02:00be go.
02:01But as the cars approached the final corner on the formation lap, all 14 Michelin runners pulled into the pits
02:07and were backed into their garages.
02:10The United States Grand Prix went on, but only among the three Bridgestone-supplied teams.
02:16On Wednesday, an FIA board found the teams guilty of two of the five charges against them,
02:21but delayed handing down penalties until September, when Formula One hopes to put the events of Indy 2005 in the
02:28past.
02:31Well, here's a look at what transpired in that meeting of the World Motorsport Council on Wednesday.
02:36The seven Michelin teams were found guilty on two of the five charges lodged against them.
02:41But the decision was not to levy any penalties until September 14th.
02:46In the meantime, those Michelin teams were expected to come up with a program to mitigate the damages to the
02:53fans in the Indianapolis Motor Speedway
02:55and, hopefully, find a way to ensure that such a thing would not take place again.
03:02And Michelin got the drop on everybody before the Wednesday meeting in front of the World Motorsport Council.
03:07They announced that they would give a refund to any ticket holder for the U.S. Grand Prix at Indy.
03:12And here is news. This is Kimi Raikkonen, second in the World Championship, coming in.
03:18And his Mercedes has gone poof.
03:22Well, wherever he qualifies tomorrow, you can add 10 onto that.
03:26They'll have to change that lump.
03:28Getting back to the Indy story, Michelin has also volunteered to purchase 20,000 tickets to be distributed to fans
03:34for next year's race.
03:35Here's another look at what happened to McLaren's championship favorite.
03:44Unusual failure there is right under braking when the engine started to let go.
03:49Well, we know they tend to vary engine braking in the car to assist in keeping balance and preserve the
03:56tires.
03:56But something's happened to the right-hand bank there, isn't it?
03:59Mm-hmm.
04:02Phlegmatic expression on the face of the person's got to change the engine.
04:09Raikkonen was fifth in the morning one-hour session.
04:13That will be that for the Fin for today.
04:17Now, we'll be talking more about Indianapolis as the weekend goes on.
04:21There is Olivier Panis, the only Frenchman involved in Formula One.
04:25He is the Friday test driver.
04:28Bit of a cameo in front of his home fans here at Manicur.
04:34Yeah, the regular Friday driver, of course, is Ricardo Zonta, the Brazilian driver.
04:39But this weekend they thought they'd let Olivier Panis show his skills in front of the home crowd.
04:43So he's on today.
04:45Obviously only today.
04:47Kimi Raikkonen helping to push his car aside.
04:49You can see the grass is very, very dry and brown.
04:52They haven't had much rain here until yesterday.
04:54They had a downpour which pretty much cleaned the track up.
04:58Some of that dry grass.
04:59These cars are pretty hot when they go on it.
05:02And you've got to watch out there for small fires to start under these cars.
05:06Yeah, very easy.
05:06It's nice to see Kimi Raikkonen helping to push the car as opposed to pushing the marshals back.
05:12You're never going to let him forget that, are you?
05:15But you're right about the weather.
05:16I mean, all over France, certainly in the region I live around near Cognac and Bordeaux as well,
05:21it's been absolutely bone dry and blistering hot.
05:24Water shortage all around Europe and the south of Spain as well, down in Jerez where the teams have been
05:29testing boiling temperatures.
05:31As you guys say yesterday, big downpour of the circuit which, although the water was welcome and it's dropped the
05:37temperatures a lot,
05:38it has, of course, cleaned the track and washed the rubber on that would have been laid by support rangers
05:42in previous weeks leading up to this.
05:44So the teams now have to start from scratch on these hard tires to put some rubber and build up
05:49some traction and grip back into this very smooth, almost billiard table smooth track around Magna Corp.
05:56We'll see Juan Pablo Montoya's best effort thus far on Friday.
06:00Montoya was reported to be in tears at Indianapolis two weeks ago at the thought of not being able to
06:07race in front of the hundreds of his Colombian countrymen who made the trek to Indy to watch their hero
06:12in action.
06:15And although the problems at Indianapolis were basically Michelin's fault, it was their tires that failed, they have really stepped
06:21up to the plate.
06:22They're going to cough up about 15 million to refund the people that were there this year and buy those
06:2820,000 free tickets for next year.
06:29So they have really stepped up. I fear the FIA, the controlling body, are not going to do any stepping
06:35up at all.
06:36They're just going to lay blame everywhere else but on their shoulders.
06:38And we should probably do a public service here. If you are interested in getting a refund for your ticket
06:43for the U.S. Grand Prix, please do not call the Indianapolis Motor Speedway right now.
06:47The details of the program have yet to have been sorted out. And until they are, just let the folks
06:53work.
06:54And we'll pass those details along as soon as we get them.
06:57But I spoke with Michelin representatives yesterday and they said that plan is still being worked on and that they
07:03hope other people will join in.
07:05As you see Juan Pablo losing the battle for traction.
07:07When you mean other people join in, you mean you hope other people join in and doing some refunding.
07:12That's right.
07:13And that's what the FIA wanted.
07:14Of course, they want the team to help refund as well.
07:16Absolutely.
07:19So we're off to a dramatic start.
07:21We'll take a break and return with more live coverage of Friday practice.
07:25Pedro De La Rosa, McLaren's Friday driver, is quickest.
07:33Welcome back live to the Circuit de Magnicour in Nevers, France.
07:38Site of this weekend's 10th round of the 2005 Formula One season, the French Grand Prix.
07:43Bob Barsha, David Hobbs, Steve Matchett with you.
07:46Right now, let's take a look at some of the highlights of this morning's first one-hour practice.
07:51As usual, first cars on track were the Jordans.
07:54Despite much pre-race concern that we might not have a full complement of teams on hand this weekend, we
08:00do have all 10.
08:01And there's the man of the hour for the French fans.
08:03The Grand Prix driver, Olivier Panis.
08:06Here's the man of the hour, the Friday driver for McLaren, Pedro De La Rosa, who was quick all through
08:10the session and ended up at the top of the timesheet.
08:13You can see here taking his usual Friday morning stroll through the gravel.
08:18Always guaranteed to do this at least once during Friday, which is the Friday drive.
08:23Of course, two weeks ago in Indianapolis, Scott Speed took over that role.
08:27But that was a relatively light shunt. Here's Montero out in the jaw of the EJ15.
08:32One thing you've got to watch around Magna Corp is use of the curves.
08:35You have to make use of them as you do in Imola to get a good lap time.
08:38But look at that. Smashes the suspension, left rear suspension given up on the car.
08:44And look at the amount of negative. When we talk about negative camera on the cars, that's what we're talking
08:48about.
08:48They're usually not to that extreme.
08:51Fernando Alonso, the world championship leader by 22 points coming in, gave it his best shot in the Renault with
08:56new livery this weekend.
08:58But the best he could do was P2 behind Pedro De La Rosa.
09:04Pete Rose, who wound up four tenths of a second quicker than the championship leader.
09:09Here's a look at the times from that first session.
09:11And once again, a lot of the race drivers up front.
09:14We expect to see the Friday drivers like Pedro De La Rosa pounding out lots of laps,
09:20checking fuel levels, working with tire combinations.
09:23But in this case, we saw plenty of the race drivers up there.
09:27And as it's very often the case this year, we don't see the Bridgestone drivers very high up there.
09:33Michael Schumacher in ninth, Barrichello down in 12.
09:3512.
09:37So again, you know, these guys like to put in at least one quick lap per session.
09:42And we can only assume they just can't quite manage it.
09:44There's Jenson Button getting with the program up to within a tenth and a half of the session leader.
09:50De La Rosa, who is on a flyer of his own right now, he has just reset fast time in
09:56the first of three time sectors.
09:58There's a good slow motion look at Jenson Button pounding over those curbs in the final corner before start finish.
10:05Ruben Barrichello is currently lying second in the list, but he is nearly a second slower than Pedro De La
10:11Rosa.
10:112.741 miles around, 70 laps of racing scheduled.
10:16Let's check out the Porsche track map, David.
10:19Well, it's an interesting track. It has no elevation change at all, except at Imola where they gouged it out
10:24with a bulldozer.
10:25As you can see, a lot of tight corners and some very fast ones as well.
10:28Crossing the start finish line through Grand Curve there to the left, then sweeping right into Estoril.
10:32Grand Curve flat out. Estoril is not, but you do need a lot of downforce.
10:36As you exit Estoril, you really want to make a good run because you want to be chasing everybody down.
10:40The place to pass them is at Adelaide Hairpin. Very tight hairpin.
10:43The road weaves through to that 180 left, which you need good traction out of there.
10:48Imola is a very fast diving right, left.
10:51And then, of course, Chateau Doe is a pretty important corner because the next overtaking spot really is that complex
10:56Dulice,
10:57where we saw Barrichello zip pass truly last year.
10:59Then that very tight chicane where we saw Montero do that flying job.
11:03So all in all, it's a pretty complex track.
11:05It's very, very smooth.
11:06So they run these cars low to get maximum downforce.
11:11Here's a look at Yarno Trulli, who turned no laps at all in the opening one-hour session.
11:15The pole sitter in fairly controversial circumstances at Indianapolis two weeks ago.
11:20And it transpired that he had almost no fuel in the car, which led to speculation that Toyota knew perhaps
11:27as early as Friday night that they would not be taking part in the U.S. Grand Prix.
11:31So they went out to capture what glory they could.
11:34Here's a look at the weather conditions.
11:36And there's David, excuse me, Christian Clean.
11:39Ooh, not what he wants.
11:40Is he just pulled off or is he knocked off?
11:42Well, this is a clean sweep for Red Bull because David Coulthard went off early in this session.
11:47We saw Vida Antonio Luzzi go off in the morning.
11:49He didn't just stop.
11:50Look at those skid marks there.
11:52So that's Christian Clean really trying to do well for the team after having stood down for four races.
11:58Ooh, whoa, whoa, whoa.
11:59Wow.
12:02Ah, clean out for the rest of the day.
12:04Ooh, man.
12:04I'm surprised there was no water splash out of that tire wall after that heavy rain last night.
12:11Bad news for the young Austrian.
12:15It just set the quickest first sector before he went off.
12:18So obviously trying just a little bit too hard.
12:21As I say, it was a very quick lap right until the point where he wrote the car off.
12:25I thought Bob's terminology there, a clean sweep, but it's particularly...
12:29Yeah, it's very clear.
12:30Somebody finally got that.
12:34Yano Trulli again.
12:35Now, Steve, you're the action man on this stuff.
12:39The Toyotas are very good on smooth circuits.
12:42And obviously setting that second fastest time in only a second flying lap would indicate that the car is looking
12:47good.
12:47Yeah, this is very much an aerodynamic track.
12:50As you said earlier on, you need quite a lot of downforce on the car around here.
12:53Certainly around Estriel, turn three, that long, sweeping right-hander.
12:58But the track is incredibly smooth, which allows the teams to drop the ride height considerably.
13:03So they run very low ride height.
13:05And you can bet your life that Mike Gascoigne, even if he's not at this track,
13:09is at their headquarters in Cologne studying the telemetry data streaming off the car
13:13and being sent straight back to the factory to try and set that TF 105 chassis up.
13:18It should work very well around here.
13:19Let's look at Mark Webber, the Australian and the Williams BMW.
13:23Just 15th in the morning practice, 2.6 seconds off of Pedro De La Rosa's session leading time.
13:30That time, by the way, a 114.7, well quicker than what we've seen thus far in this second practice.
13:40The French Grand Prix at Manicourt back in 2002 featured Kimi Raikkonen in the McLaren,
13:46looking for his first Formula One victory and leading the race with five laps to go
13:50when he slid off the track on oil left over from a Toyota engine failure just a few laps earlier.
13:57Michael Schumacher in the Ferrari running second, capitalized on the Finns' misfortune
14:01and nearly banged wheels with him, taking over the lead, going on for the victory,
14:07which would make Schumacher world champion for the fifth time,
14:11tying him back then with the late Juan Manuel Fangio for the most ever.
14:16Of course, Michael would go on to win two more world titles with Ferrari, making it seven in all,
14:20while Raikkonen would have to wait until the Malaysian Grand Prix in 2003
14:25to grab his first career Grand Prix win.
14:28Welcome back to Friday's second one-hour practice session,
14:30live here on Speed Channel, a little overcast overhead,
14:33but a warm day in central France.
14:36I'm Bob Varsha with David Hobbs and Steve Matchett.
14:39Pedro De La Rosa is the fast man of the session at 116.501.
14:43Yarno truly second, about four-tenths of a second behind him.
14:47And then Jenson Button, Ralph Schumacher, Michael Schumacher is fifth.
14:51His teammate Rubens Botticello is sixth, David Coulthard seventh,
14:55followed by Olivier Panis in a Friday cameo appearance for the Toyota team in front of his countrymen.
15:00Beat Antonio Luzzi with the Red Bull team is ninth, and Mark Webber in the Williams tenth.
15:05And, of course, we've already seen Kimi Raikkonen drop out of this practice session with a blown engine,
15:11which is absolutely critical for him because tomorrow when he qualifies,
15:15he's going to have to start ten places back.
15:18There's a good chance he will be the fastest tomorrow,
15:20and, of course, that is absolutely vital to him in his championship chase of Alonso.
15:24He's 22 points behind Alonso, who we ride on board with now.
15:28So that starting tenth position, or worse, for him tomorrow,
15:31could be absolutely disastrous for the world championship hopes, especially...
15:35Woo!
15:36Oh!
15:36Well, that goes that fast.
15:38So that was going pretty well up there, then.
15:39Yeah.
15:41A lot of understeer induced around this track.
15:44Primarily because the right front tyre struggles to come up to temperature.
15:49Here's that very last chicane because coming down to the start finish.
15:53A horrible curb in there.
15:55Still quite to that mistake.
15:57He's still half a second quicker.
15:59Now think of how fast he could have gone.
16:00He was the pole-sitter for this race a year ago.
16:03It was Fernando Alonso.
16:04Let's have another look at that understeer.
16:07Yee!
16:09There it is.
16:11There's only one left-hand corner, really, which is turn eight.
16:15I wouldn't say the hairpin because, as I've said,
16:17that Adelaide hairpin is really the hairpin of the track,
16:19but there's only one real left-hand corner.
16:21You don't get the heat build-up in the right front tyre.
16:24The other three come up to temperature relatively quick.
16:27That stays cool, and...
16:29as a consequence of that, a lot of understeer induced into these cars.
16:32Yeah, that hairpin you're talking about is a long corner, too, that 180.
16:35Yeah.
16:36It's a bit of a fuss created last week as you look at his teammate.
16:39That's Giancarlo Fisichella of Italy and the other Renault.
16:43It was suggested, I think it was Jacques Villeneuve's manager, Craig Pollock,
16:46who said that Alonso was saved by the Renault,
16:48how he was simply wailing away at the steering and the throttle and the brakes,
16:52and it was the electronics that was saving him.
16:55Two weeks ago in Indy, Paul Stoddart, Minardi team principal,
16:58said Fernando Alonso is the most naturally gifted young race driver I've ever worked with.
17:04Well, I think that's evident. It's self-evident, isn't it?
17:07He's very quick and very naturally talented in the car.
17:10Yes, these cars are very sophisticated pieces of equipment, but at the end of the day...
17:16Oh!
17:16...the guy behind the wheel is doing a lot of the work, and he is very quick.
17:19Fisichella, his teammate, doing exactly the same thing at the same corner,
17:24and he's nine thousandths of a second a lap, slower to that point.
17:28Gonna have to back off that braking point a little bit.
17:30Yeah!
17:32Now is Fisichella gonna stack up?
17:35I could kind of understand those sorts of comments about the car saving the driver so much,
17:39if both of the teammates set identical lap times all the while.
17:42Well, it's clear that Alonso is incredibly quick and far faster than Fisichella at this point of the season.
17:49Well, there's your evidence, because the electronics on the car and the setup is potentially identical.
17:53And of course, this great politics man, Jacques Villeneuve, was also going that quick,
17:56which he doesn't seem to be doing despite of all electronic aids.
17:59Which brings up the point, there's been a charm offensive going on as far as Villeneuve is concerned of late,
18:05how much he likes BMW, how much he has to offer the new owners of the Sauber team.
18:12I suppose he's gotta say that.
18:14You gotta sell yourself, right?
18:15Someone's gonna say it for him.
18:17Yeah, right. You gotta sell yourself.
18:19Here's Michael Schumacher, who picked up his first victory,
18:21but probably the most unfulfilling of his career, and he's got his hands full with that Ferrari.
18:26But he's also doing the time too, which is something that'll breathe a breath of fresh air and relief through
18:32the team.
18:33Both Ferraris are on the attack.
18:35Marichello also posting good times.
18:37There you see, he's now the session leader, at least until his team leader gets to start finish.
18:44Yep.
18:46By a chunk, four tenths.
18:50Well, it's time that Bridgestone did get their act together.
18:54Their tires obviously were fine at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway a couple of weeks ago,
18:58whereas their dreaded rival, Michelin, were not.
19:01But the Michelin have had a fantastic run this year, there's no doubt about it.
19:04I'm curious as to how fine they were.
19:07We saw the Ferrari team in particular make a couple of precautionary pit stops,
19:11and those tires looked like they were being worked over pretty hard.
19:14Yeah.
19:17As you see, they get a pretty good pasting here in Manicourt as well.
19:22Ferraris won two, followed by the Renaults.
19:25We'll be back.
19:28The FIA Formula One World Championship is brought to you by Michelin, a better way forward.
19:36Welcome back on board the Renault, the home team here in France.
19:40This is Giancarlo Fisichella.
19:43And they have become, Bob, they have become very much the home team in France.
19:47Looking at the newspapers when I'm back home in France, all of a sudden they are very much the national
19:51team.
19:52A couple of years ago when they weren't doing very well, they were just Renault.
19:55Now it's very much our team, the French national team doing well.
19:59And it goes doing well on French tires.
20:02Yeah.
20:03On board the Fisichella.
20:05It was six tenths off the pace of Michael Schumacher.
20:08Poor old Fisichella.
20:09I mean, what a year he's had.
20:11It just shows the difference between two teammates.
20:13He wins the first race from pole.
20:15Since then he's done absolutely, basically zip.
20:18His teammate, on the other hand, comes third in the first race, had three wins in the trot.
20:23Then he comes third, second again, then a fifth, then another win.
20:26I mean, God, he just, you know, Fisichella must be thinking himself, I just, am I going crazy or is
20:32everybody else going crazy?
20:34I'm trying to figure out what French television is trying to show us here with this split screen.
20:38I guess those two are synced up in real time.
20:41Yeah.
20:41So you can see who's gaining or losing ground in the corner.
20:45That special livery is, as I understand it, for today only.
20:50It's meant to represent a phoenix.
20:52A mythical bird that protects warriors on the battlefield.
20:56Renault is also supporting the city of Paris' effort to win the 2012 Olympic Summer Games.
21:03And that decision is coming up very shortly.
21:05Which should, of course, by rights, go to London.
21:07But I don't suppose it will.
21:09I was thinking Paris myself, but London will be good too.
21:13London will be very good.
21:15Being as how it's the most sophisticated and the real center of Western civilization.
21:23In some people's minds.
21:25You look quizzical at that, Bob.
21:27Critical or quizzical?
21:28Quizzical.
21:29Okay.
21:29Quizzically critical.
21:31Or critically quizzical.
21:35Yarno truly currently eighth in the session.
21:371.7 seconds off Michael Schumacher's session leading time.
21:43Brilliant pole two weeks ago at Indianapolis.
21:46With no gas on board at all.
21:50Clouds building over there.
21:53Rain is always a possibility here at Manicur.
21:56We'll be back in just a moment.
21:57No.
21:58Behind with M Streeters.
22:04Hmmm.
22:05What can we get?
22:06I haven't newIXvo hele karen karen.
22:13We took over 10 cents to 49-200.
22:17benchmarking a lot.
22:18No, not bad.
22:18Me too.
22:22No, I know any Combo.
22:23No, not bad goodness.
22:27No, not bad things are bad news.
22:35A little over halfway through Friday's second one-hour practice
22:38in preparation for round 10 of the Formula One season,
22:41the French Grand Prix here on Speed Channel.
22:43This is Fernando Alonso, currently second in the session,
22:47and he has a better time than that.
22:49But he still remains second.
22:52And that glitz that we just saw coming back,
22:54you saw the cars going down upside down.
22:55And I think that's just to demonstrate the downforce these cars give,
22:58because they could, in fact,
23:00I don't think about about 100 miles down, run across the ceiling.
23:02They develop so much downforce.
23:04You're right.
23:06There's that long run down.
23:07That's our way of showing it.
23:08Here's a hairpin.
23:09Very tight hairpin.
23:10That's where the overtaking's going to happen, right there on Sunday.
23:19Here's a look at Fernando Alonso,
23:21currently 0.068 seconds behind the session,
23:24leading time with Michael Schumacher in the Ferrari.
23:28Check out these curves.
23:29I think these have been raised since last year.
23:32I don't recall seeing this much bounding around there
23:34in that final corner complex.
23:36Well, the trouble is,
23:36they start off pretty good there,
23:38like you saw in the picture,
23:39but they have a sudden massive ramp-up at the top of the curve,
23:43which I'm not quite sure what that's supposed to achieve,
23:45other than what we saw earlier on in that issue
23:48where Montero went over this morning.
23:51I mean,
23:53Michael Schumacher ripping a tear-off off his visor.
23:56And Steve, we have further input.
23:59Oh, yes.
23:59Now, all you guys and girls on speedtv.com,
24:02I know you've been debating
24:03what those three little LEDs are for,
24:05right there on the back face
24:07with Michael Schumacher's steering wheel.
24:09This is Barrichello's car we're looking at,
24:12but those little LEDs,
24:13Ross Braun finally yesterday in a conversation
24:16relented and agreed to tell me what they were,
24:19so here's the news.
24:20They were put onto the back of the steering wheel
24:22as system warning lights on the car,
24:25and the idea was to reflect the lights
24:28off the little windscreen,
24:29the little windshield mounted just ahead of those,
24:31back into the driver's eyes
24:33to tell them about parameters on the car.
24:35They said it worked very well in testing.
24:37It was great,
24:37but as soon as we put them into race conditions,
24:39the drivers just simply refused to look at them.
24:41We couldn't recognize them,
24:42so we had to disable them.
24:44There they are right there,
24:44those three little LEDs.
24:47And I said to Ross Braun,
24:48well, Ross,
24:48why don't you take them off the steering wheel
24:50if you're not using them?
24:50And he said,
24:51well, we thought about it,
24:53but we thought we were kind of cool,
24:54and at one point,
24:55we even considered putting the random generator
24:57into the ECU on the control system
24:59to just flash up lights randomly
25:02throughout the race
25:03to confuse the opposition
25:04and see how many people complained
25:05to the FIA that we were cheating.
25:08So there you go, finally.
25:10Yeah, the truth is out.
25:11The truth is out.
25:12They should have done it.
25:13Well, that was my bad.
25:14I thought that was Michael.
25:15Rivers Bartichello picked up a pole here,
25:17the only pole ever
25:18for the old Stewart Grand Prix,
25:20which eventually became Jaguar,
25:21which eventually became Red Bull,
25:23back in 1999.
25:26That's Fernando Alonso.
25:29Parks his Renault.
25:30See a fairly big rear wing
25:32on this car on the R25,
25:34and you'll see that
25:35all the cars running
25:37relatively high figures
25:38of downforce around here.
25:39It's a couple of long straights,
25:41but you need it,
25:41and as David,
25:42you said earlier on,
25:43for that Estoril,
25:44turn three,
25:45such a long corner,
25:47very sweeping,
25:48and puts a lot of undersea
25:49onto the car,
25:50and you need the downforce assistance
25:51right there
25:52to try and control the car.
25:53You certainly need downforce there
25:55so that the cars
25:55don't slide too much
25:57going through there,
25:57otherwise you put
25:58a tremendous amount of heat
25:59through the,
25:59the tyres get a lot of heat
26:00build up through there anyway,
26:01but you definitely need
26:03a lot of downforce,
26:04but boy oh boy,
26:05you could do without it
26:05on that long run down to Adelaide.
26:07You pick up a good point.
26:09The engineers I was talking to you
26:10yesterday from Renault
26:11were saying exactly that.
26:12You can take the downforce
26:13off the car.
26:13It would appear logical in a way
26:15to trim the downforce
26:16off the car
26:16and get that straight line speed,
26:18but you just lose so much.
26:19But right there
26:20at the end of that long straight,
26:22you need all the downforce
26:23in the world you can get
26:24when you brake
26:24for that Adelaide hairpin
26:26because as you actually
26:26apply the brakes,
26:27you've got about
26:282,500 pounds of downforce
26:30and you can brake
26:31really late
26:32with downforce figures like that.
26:34Yeah, you can
26:35and you'll notice the absence.
26:38This is one of the tracks
26:38you very rarely see
26:39the underbody
26:40FIA legality flanks
26:42bottoming out.
26:42We're saying that the cars
26:43are running very low down,
26:44a very low ride height,
26:46possibly the lowest
26:47of the season,
26:48but no point around
26:49the track
26:50do you ever see
26:50those sort of skid marks?
26:51Look, think back
26:52a couple of weeks ago
26:53to Friday in Indianapolis.
26:55Okay, a lot of that
26:55on the Toyota
26:56we know now
26:56is down to running
26:57low tyre pressures
26:58in the Michelin,
26:59which of course
27:00would lower the tyre
27:01and would lower
27:01the ride height,
27:02but you just don't get it
27:03around here.
27:03This is a track
27:04that excites
27:04the aerodynamicists.
27:06Rory Byrne used to like
27:07coming out to this track.
27:08If he could ever
27:09grab him
27:09and take him
27:10out of his wind tunnel
27:11environment,
27:12this is a track
27:12he would come to
27:13because this is really
27:14the real-life version
27:16of a wind tunnel
27:17in a way.
27:18It's the closest thing
27:19they can get to
27:19their virtual world
27:20back at the factory.
27:22Michael Schumacher
27:22letting
27:23a little bit
27:25in due
27:26he didn't know
27:27how slow up
27:27quick
27:27and he was kind of
27:30not actually online
27:31but
27:32I suppose he knows
27:33what he's doing.
27:34Obviously
27:34I thought he knew
27:35what he was doing
27:36as well
27:36which is the main thing.
27:39Those curves
27:39are just brutal.
27:41See this one here
27:41is flat.
27:43All that's flat
27:43then they lift off
27:44for this Estoril
27:45but still on all
27:46they lift off
27:46and then they really
27:47plant it
27:48and from here on
27:48it's absolutely
27:49flat stick
27:49all the way
27:50through that
27:50long, long corner.
27:52Here's where
27:53you could do
27:53without any
27:54downforce at all
27:55really
27:55on this long
27:56straight
27:58down to the
27:58hairpin.
28:00And for those
28:01new to F1
28:02just getting into
28:03the spot
28:03and wondering
28:04why we keep
28:04talking about
28:05here we could
28:06do with downforce
28:06here you could
28:07do with taking
28:07downforce off
28:08but why don't
28:08they do that?
28:09Why don't
28:09they have adjustable
28:10wings?
28:10Of course
28:11the engineers
28:11would love to do
28:13that.
28:13There's no doubt
28:14about that
28:14they'd be
28:15over that
28:15instantly
28:16but of course
28:17the regulations
28:18do not allow
28:19for any
28:19movable
28:20aerodynamic
28:21device on the
28:21car.
28:22Put a bit
28:22of a flat spot
28:23on that
28:23left front
28:24tire there
28:25as the weight
28:25transfers
28:27here's those
28:27curves
28:28at the last
28:28chicane
28:30they do look
28:31ugly don't they?
28:32They do
28:34and Montoya
28:35went to P1
28:36on that lap
28:37but timing
28:37and scoring
28:37was very late
28:39in making
28:39that adjustment
28:41there you see
28:41the number
28:42115-129
28:44still not the
28:45fastest of the
28:46week
28:46so he's still
28:47a tenth quicker
28:48than Michael
28:48Schumacher
28:49but not as
28:49quick as
28:50Alonso
28:51where Pedro
28:51De La Rosa
28:52went this
28:52morning
28:53so the
28:53McLaren's
28:53obviously
28:54got quite
28:54a bit
28:54left yet
28:57into the
28:57pit lane

31:39keep on saying
31:40on this Friday
31:40you never quite
31:41know what
31:42everybody's up to
31:42doing a lot of
31:43data collection
31:43tire wear
31:45fuel consumption
31:46runs and all
31:46this sort of
31:47thing and they
31:47obviously put in
31:48some long runs
31:49to check the
31:50tire wear
31:50which is what
31:50the Friday
31:51drivers really
31:52main job is
31:54see no

33:27weekend
33:28let's take a look
33:29at what happened
33:30to Raikkonen
33:31on his
33:32and it was
33:32under braking
33:33which is an
33:35unusual point
33:36to the track
33:37for a failure
33:38you really
33:38expect to have
33:39engine failures
33:39under full throttle
33:40but whether or not
33:42something just went
33:43under braking
33:43there
33:44off throttle
33:45the right bank
33:46went but of course
33:47as soon as something
33:47like that
33:48and then the left
33:48bank joins in
33:49but it always will be
33:50turn 7 and 8
33:52turns 7 and 8
33:56here's Alonso
33:59you see the cars
34:00we're talking about
34:01how stiffly sprung
34:02they are around here
34:02yes because it's
34:03very flat
34:04but also
34:04you need the car
34:06to work very well
34:07you need it to change
34:07direction
34:08very quick
34:09very positive
34:10between turns 6 and 7
34:12and 9 and 10
34:13right the middle part
34:14of the track
34:14after that long
34:15turn 8
34:16that left hander
34:18that's where you need
34:19you don't want the car
34:19to wallow from side to side
34:21which would help in the
34:22low speed stuff
34:22but again
34:23you can't change the
34:24suspension on the car
34:26when the car is moving
34:27on track
34:27a few years ago of course
34:28with the active suspensions
34:29in 91, 92
34:31and 93 you could do that
34:32you could play with the
34:33hydraulics on the car
34:34the driver could play
34:35with the controls on the car
34:36make the car stiffer
34:37make it softer
34:38induce more understeering
34:39more oversteer
34:41brilliant piece of technology
34:42but
34:42well it was
34:43frightfully expensive
34:45there's the bravest man
34:46on the track
34:46at the top of that
34:47crane
34:48I just can't believe
34:49what he got there
34:50you see Yano truly
34:51being followed by Alonso
34:53Alonso
34:53on the previous lap
34:55was on a real flyer
34:56there he goes
34:57down the inside of Alonso
34:58but he got caught up
34:59in the Alonso
35:01inside of truly
35:02huge seat traffic
35:04by comparison
35:05to learn more about
35:06what the Friday drivers do
35:08Alonso has turned
35:0918 laps
35:10that sounds like a lot
35:11and it is the most
35:12among the various
35:12race drivers out here
35:14but the Friday drivers
35:15are dwarfing that
35:16right now
35:17Pedro de la Rosa
35:18who was the fast man
35:19in the first session
35:20for McLaren
35:21has turned in
35:21over 30 laps
35:23as has Olivier Panis
35:25the Frenchman
35:25doing some testing
35:27for Toyota
35:28he's done 23
35:30but he's still
35:30down an 18th spot
35:33Dylan Boss
35:33has done 19
35:34in the
35:36in the third
35:38Jordan
35:40we should note
35:41as well
35:41that
35:42following the
35:43incidents
35:43at Indianapolis
35:45where
35:45blame was put
35:47on Michelin
35:47really for not
35:48bringing a
35:49backup tyre
35:50that would be
35:50more durable
35:51but with less
35:52performance
35:52which is really
35:53what the FIA
35:54was saying
35:54that's what
35:55your second tyre
35:56choice is for
35:58questions were asked
35:59whether or not
36:00after that
36:00Michelin
36:01have been
36:01very conservative
36:02with their tyre
36:03choice
36:03for this track
36:04round here
36:04whether or not
36:05they sacrificed
36:06performance for
36:07increased durability
36:08if they've redesigned
36:09in any way
36:10the fundamental
36:11make-up
36:11the construction
36:12of their tyres
36:13Michelin said
36:13no
36:13absolutely no
36:15it was a one-off
36:16failure that we
36:17had problems
36:17with those tyres
36:18in Indianapolis
36:19we haven't changed
36:20our strategy
36:21for this race
36:21we know the tyres
36:22we were going to
36:22produce
36:23long before we got
36:24here
36:24we've not changed
36:25our policy
36:26on racing
36:26at all
36:27usually a tyre
36:28of lesser performance
36:29would have a
36:29harder compound
36:30not necessarily
36:31a different
36:32construction
36:32or it might
36:33do
36:33because it
36:34wasn't the
36:34compound
36:34that caught
36:35them out
36:35in Indianapolis
36:36it was the
36:36construction
36:37of the tyre
36:37which came
36:38apart
36:38so
36:38the chance
36:40of bringing
36:40a tyre
36:41that would
36:41have been
36:41that
36:42radically
36:42different
36:43would have
36:43been
36:43pretty much
36:44different
36:44since
36:46yeah
36:46I tend to
36:47agree with you
36:47David
36:47however
36:48unless of course
36:49it was just
36:49a one-off tyre
36:50well
36:52the FIA
36:52have also asked
36:53very politely
36:54of Michelin
36:55because they had
36:55no contract
36:56with Michelin
36:57per se
36:57that's done
36:57through the
36:58teams
36:58they've asked
36:59Michelin
36:59into supply
37:00all their
37:01data for tyre
37:01failures
37:02throughout the
37:02season so far
37:03and the
37:04off-season
37:05pre-season
37:05testing
37:06to try and
37:07get a grip
37:08to try and
37:09understand better
37:09whether or not
37:10it was a
37:11one-off
37:11failure
37:11or a one-off
37:12incident
37:12at Indianapolis
37:13or if
37:14Michelin do
37:15have a
37:15fundamental
37:16problem
37:16with the
37:16tyres
37:17that's a
37:17pretty
37:17remarkable
37:18thing
37:18to do
37:18though
37:18just give
37:19us all
37:19of your
37:20data
37:20and you
37:20think
37:21there are
37:21people
37:21on the
37:21FIA
37:22staff
37:22who know
37:22more
37:23about tyre
37:23technology
37:24than
37:29may have
37:30been politely
37:30arseful
37:31and I think
37:31they've politely
37:31told him to
37:32what to do
37:33with their
37:34request
37:34exactly
37:35well the two
37:36counts that the
37:37teams were found
37:37guilty of were
37:39first of all
37:40failing to ensure
37:41they were in
37:41possession of
37:42suitable tyres for
37:43the US Grand Prix
37:44I have no idea
37:46and the other
37:47was wrongfully
37:47refusing to
37:48allow their
37:49cars to
37:49start the
37:50race
37:50and using
37:51the pit lane
37:52to avoid
37:53turn 13
37:54on every
37:54lap
37:55which the
37:55teams dismissed
37:56as being
37:56incredibly
37:57dangerous
37:58and you can
37:59understand their
37:59feeling as we
38:00watch various
38:01tyres being
38:02toasted
38:02Felipe Massa
38:04there
38:04and of course
38:05it would have
38:05been no more
38:06a race
38:06than it was
38:07and there
38:07is the man
38:08himself
38:08Pierre
38:09DuPasquet
38:09the race
38:10chief
38:11of
38:12Michelin
38:1368 years
38:14old
38:14retiring at
38:15the end
38:15of the
38:16year
38:16that was
38:16announced
38:17during the
38:17off season
38:18and an
38:19amazing man
38:20this weekend
38:20in fact
38:21yesterday
38:21in that
38:21heavy rain
38:22he was
38:23out there
38:24rollerblading
38:24around this
38:252.7 mile
38:27racetrack
38:27he's a big
38:29fan of dirt
38:29bikes

38:33the cobwebs
38:34out from
38:34time to
38:35time
38:35good on
38:35it
38:36we'll be
38:36back
38:41welcome
38:42back
38:42Jean-Carlo
38:43Fisichel
38:44in the
38:44Renault
38:44still trying
38:45to figure
38:45out where
38:46to hit
38:46the brakes
38:46down
38:47there
38:48on the
38:48far end
38:49of the
38:49circuit
38:50Chateau
38:50Doe
38:50that was
38:51that last
38:51real tight
38:52right hand
38:53here he
38:53comes into
38:53the
38:55last
38:56complex

38:58officially
39:00I like
39:00Chateau
39:01Doe
39:01better
39:01the water
39:02closet
39:02turn
39:03yeah
39:04yeah
39:05we saw
39:06a few
39:07moments ago
39:07set a
39:08time
39:08quicker
39:08than
39:08this
39:08previous
39:09time
39:09but he's
39:09still
39:10a hair
39:10slower
39:11than
39:11Michael
39:11Schumacher
39:12in
39:13second
39:13spot
39:13so
39:14Alonso
39:14remains
39:14third
39:15but
39:15he
39:16and
39:16Schumacher
39:16both
39:17on
39:17the
39:17same
39:17tent
39:20Renault
39:20obviously
39:21got a lot
39:21of power
39:22here
39:22Alonso
39:22has just
39:22put a
39:23time
39:23through
39:23the
39:23speed
39:24trap
39:24of
39:24320
39:25kilometers
39:25198.7
39:27miles
39:27an hour
39:28through
39:28the
39:28speed
39:28trap
39:29De La
39:29Rossoff
39:30in
39:30the
39:30McLaren
39:31fastest
39:31so far
39:32the

39:32just
39:33over
39:33200
39:34miles
39:34an hour
39:34200.5
39:38and that's
39:38carrying a lot
39:39of downforce
39:39yeah
39:43little feedback
39:43through that
39:44headset
39:46ball shouting
39:47at him
39:47Pierre
39:47Pasquiat
39:49take care
39:50of my
39:50tires
39:51well credit
39:52to Pasquiat
39:52he's one of the
39:53great personalities
39:53in Formula
39:54One and he
39:55stood up
39:55and said
39:55hey
39:56if anybody's
39:56going to take
39:57the blame
39:57for it
39:57it's me
39:58it's on
39:59my watch
40:00and I will
40:01see it through
40:01but I'm not
40:02going to retire
40:04prematurely
40:04and they're not
40:04going to sack
40:06it is not
40:07the Michelin way
40:11it's a shame too
40:12because it spoils
40:13a great run
40:14for Michelin
40:15that spoils
40:16a great run
40:17for Michelin
40:17and he's still
40:18running
40:21that's how
40:21none of those
40:22curbs
40:24you've got to
40:24use them
40:25I was saying
40:26yesterday
40:26you know
40:27if you wanted
40:27to get a good
40:28time in qualifying
40:29you need to
40:30use these curbs
40:31to set the car
40:32up for the
40:33straight line
40:33as soon as
40:34you come off
40:34the curbs
40:35you cannot do
40:35that in race
40:36conditions
40:36because you're
40:37likely to break
40:37the suspension
40:38but we've just
40:38seen that
40:39with Montero
40:39in the Toyota
40:40he just lost it
40:41the back end
40:43was coming around
40:43as he turned in
40:44watch this
40:45I'll tell you what
40:45he's very lucky
40:46here
40:46you know what
40:46he just goes
40:47across the bottom
40:48edge of the curb
40:48before it gets
40:49whereas Montero
40:50this morning
40:51went over the
40:51high bit
40:52and got launched
40:52and I mean
40:53boy it really launched
40:54it and broke
40:55the suspension
40:55yeah it went
40:56about three feet
40:56in the air
40:57he gets up
40:58no he's already
40:59lost it before
40:59he even gets
41:00the first curb
41:01that shows you
41:02what a razor's edge
41:03it is
41:04trying to get
41:05through there
41:05at top speed
41:06yeah
41:08no margin
41:09for error
41:09Haute Vitesse
41:10as they'd say
41:11here in France
41:12something like
41:15they'd say
41:16exactly that
41:16yeah
41:17they'd say
41:17exactly that
41:17oh yeah
41:21this is where
41:22that cameraman
41:22standing on top
41:23of that tower
41:24it would be
41:24can you imagine
41:25doing that
41:26I can remember
41:27the BBC
41:28many years ago
41:29at the British
41:29Grand Prix
41:29at Silverstone
41:30would put a camera
41:31on top of this
41:31impossibly tall
41:33cherry picker
41:33and during the
41:34breaks between
41:35sessions
41:35they'd bring this
41:36thing down
41:36which took about
41:3710-15 minutes
41:38and they offered
41:39people trips
41:40you want to go up
41:41on the thing
41:42the only person
41:43from our crew
41:44who would go up
41:45was this young lady
41:46from the Netherlands
41:47who worked on
41:48our audio setups
41:49she was the only one
41:50hey Sebastian Bourdais
41:51the Champ Car Titleist
41:52and of course
41:53native Frenchman
41:54from Le Mans
41:56yeah get close
41:57to the razor
41:57sunshine
41:59Seabass
42:00as he's known
42:00on the Champ Car
42:02World Series
42:02he too
42:03supporting
42:05his native country's
42:06effort to win
42:07the Olympic Summer Games
42:08don't get started
42:09oh
42:10Britannia
42:11Britannia
42:11rules the waves
42:14after all
42:15Pierre de Coubertin
42:16was a Frenchman
42:19so was Mr. Chauvin
42:21who was actually
42:22a military officer
42:23I think
42:24who lent his name
42:25to the phrase
42:26or the word
42:28Chauvinism
42:31you learn something
42:32every day
42:33with Bob Varsh
42:34it's amazing
42:36just getting started
42:37I got a whole pile
42:38of them
42:39wow
42:40Olivier Pannis
42:41the Frenchman
42:41just jumped into
42:43fifth spot there
42:44in the Toyota
42:44the Friday drivers
42:45how many laps
42:46has old Ollie done
42:47lots
42:4835 laps
42:49so this is about
42:50actually 36
42:5137 now
42:53little wiggle
42:53into the hairpin
42:54I think it was a good move
42:58to put Pannis
42:58in this car
42:59for the French Grand Prix
43:00the official explanation
43:01from Toyota
43:02was that Zantra
43:03had done so much work
43:04in testing
43:05that he needed a rest
43:07and he needed a layoff
43:08they announced this
43:09weeks ago
43:10they were going to do it
43:10you know
43:10it's great
43:11what's wrong with that
43:12what's wrong with
43:12putting Pannis in the car
43:13for the French Grand Prix
43:14come out and say it
43:15a fan emailed me
43:16last week
43:17and said
43:17why don't they let
43:18each team do this
43:19put a third car
43:20out there on Friday
43:21you know
43:21put the local hero
43:22in it
43:24and have some fun
43:26Pedro De La Rosa
43:27doing a 1-9
43:28here
43:28this could be
43:29a very quick lap
43:31I had a long chat
43:33there you go
43:33with Pedro De La Rosa
43:34as he goes to P1
43:35at a Grand Prix Tours
43:36event in Indianapolis
43:37on US Grand Prix weekend
43:39he is a great guy
43:40with a lot of interesting
43:41thoughts on Formula 1
43:42and kudos also
43:43to Grand Prix Tours
43:44who credited
43:45each of their guests
43:47at Indy
43:47for the cost
43:48of their tickets
43:49to the race
43:50one of several efforts
43:51made by the American
43:52motorsports community
43:53the Champ Cars
43:54allowed anybody
43:54with a ticket
43:55to come to the
43:56Cleveland race
43:57Irwindale Speedway
43:58out in California
43:59honored the Formula 1 tickets
44:02that was a great
44:04move by Barry Simpson
44:05there of Grand Prix Tours
44:07to do that
44:07I mean that's
44:08obviously not
44:09certainly not
44:10his fault
44:10that lap
44:11of Pedro De La Rosa
44:12by the way
44:13is over 7 tenths
44:15quicker than
44:15the lap of Montoya
44:16so it just shows
44:17that these McLarens
44:18have got an awful lot
44:19left in the locker
44:20yet
44:21the general
44:23tenor of the press
44:24leading into this event
44:25points in the direction
44:27of McLaren Mercedes
44:29and particularly
44:30Kimi Räikkönen
44:31of course
44:31that was before
44:32he lost the engine
44:33in his car
44:34and is looking
44:34at a start
44:35in the second half
44:36of the grid
44:36for Sunday's race
44:45carlo Fisichella
44:46through the Adelaide
44:47hairpin
44:47that left front tire
44:48was looking a little
44:49worse for wear
44:50yeah
44:51doesn't look so bad
44:52here though
45:00he's on pace to be feet too
45:02but he had to tighten
45:02that corner up a little bit
45:04because that Ferrari out there
45:05which gave him plenty of room
45:06but nevertheless
45:07his entry was just a bit
45:08on the tight side
45:09for that long corner
45:11it was
45:11that's the turn 8
45:12we were talking about
45:12earlier on
45:13the only real
45:14left-hand corner
45:15on the track
45:17here comes Chateau D'eau
45:18I think it slowed him
45:19up quite a bit
45:20that
45:21some wag
45:22called it
45:23Chateau D'eau
45:28that time
45:29of Pedro de la Rosa
45:30is going to take
45:31some
45:33beating
45:34especially
45:34we've only got
45:3550 seconds left
45:35to do it
45:42data gathered
45:43on every lap
45:45I'm sure
45:45every bit of it
45:46is useful
45:46talking about
45:47the left front tire
45:48looking a bit
45:48ragged
45:49the right front tire
45:50off that shot
45:51didn't look particularly
45:52good on the Renault
45:52see that
45:54heavy brown line
45:55a bright line
45:56running around
45:56the outer
45:57shoulder
45:58it might be the fact
45:59that just the compound
46:00is being used
46:00frankly
46:02they seem to
46:02they do look a little
46:03bit ragged
46:04when they go into
46:04corners
46:05when the rubber
46:05starts to
46:06slide and bead
46:06across the surface
46:07of the tire
46:08and then you get
46:08onto the straight
46:09again
46:09and the centrifugal
46:10force starts
46:11to clean the tire
46:12up and bring it
46:13back into line
46:13well today's the day
46:14when you want to
46:15find that out
46:15you really do want
46:16to see it go off
46:17if it's going to
46:18well you have to
46:18find out today
46:19it's absolutely
46:20way too late
46:21tomorrow
46:21a little bit of
46:23a lock up there
46:23as it goes
46:27checkered flag
46:27is out
46:30see what
46:30Michael Schumacher
46:31can do
46:32relative to
46:32de la Rosa
46:33well off the pace
46:35completing a run
46:36on fuel
46:36or tire
46:36or race
46:37compound
46:38perhaps
46:39and again
46:40just to clarify
46:41what we're talking
46:41about there
46:42with this tire
46:42choice
46:42those news
46:43to F1
46:44and I know
46:45we're picking up
46:45viewers all the
46:46while in the
46:46stage
46:47which is fantastic
46:47they have to
46:49make the decision
46:49on tires
46:50between the hard
46:51and the soft
46:51compound
46:52the two different
46:53constructions
46:53today
46:54the tires
46:55that they choose
46:55today
46:56they have to
46:56declare that
46:57decision
46:57to the FIA
46:588 o'clock
46:58tomorrow morning
47:00and they are
47:01then stuck
47:01with those tires
47:02hard or soft
47:03for the remainder
47:04of the race
47:04weekend
47:06we have plenty
47:07to talk about
47:07this weekend
47:08as you see
47:09the world champion
47:11dirt tracking it
47:13just a bit
47:13now just lighten up
47:14that left front
47:15a new calendar
47:16for 2006
47:17is in the early
47:18stages
47:18including
47:20possibly
47:2020 events
47:22one more
47:23than this year
47:23already the longest
47:24calendar in Formula
47:25One history
47:28BMW buying
47:29into the Sauber
47:30team
47:35Schumacher's
47:36changed the
47:36wing mirrors
47:37on his car
47:38to say the team
47:38have changed
47:39them before
47:39and they're
47:39a lot more
47:40upright looking
47:41before
47:42even I think
47:42on Barrichello's
47:43car
47:43they tend to
47:44the stalks
47:44and the wing
47:45mirrors tend
47:45to come out
47:46at like a
47:4645 degree
47:47angle
47:47well
47:48Michael's
47:49very upright
47:49and I kept
47:50thinking
47:50what does
47:51that car
47:51remind me
47:51of now
47:52it's the
47:53old 640
47:54the old
47:54639
47:54640 car
47:55of 1989
47:561990
47:57the John Barnard
47:58design car
47:59the first car
47:59with a paddle
48:00shift
48:00used a very
48:01similar design
48:02of that
48:02very upright
48:03mirrors
48:03I like it
48:04I like those
48:04mirrors a lot
48:06last year
48:06Michael Schumacher's
48:07race winning
48:09F2004
48:10was sold
48:11in a rare
48:12auction
48:12at the factory
48:13in Maranello
48:14the car that
48:15won the first
48:15five races
48:16of last season
48:17a cool
48:183.3 million
48:20dollars
48:22a record for a
48:23Formula One car
48:25but the owner's
48:25going to have to
48:26wait until next
48:26January before it
48:28can leave Ferrari
48:28headquarters to
48:30protect the
48:30technological secrets
48:31that are still on
48:32the car
48:33but he can go to
48:34Fiorano and drive it
48:35if he wants to
48:37in fact his
48:37overalls from last
48:38year
48:38Michael Schumacher's
48:39driver's suit
48:41fetched
48:41$25,000
48:43and one of his
48:44steering wheels
48:46$83,000
48:46of course you can
48:48imagine they're not
48:48going to let that
48:49technology out of
48:50their sight
48:50for at least a season
48:52we'll be back
49:01welcome back to
49:02manicure

49:23very close to

49:27won't be seeing
49:27him again
49:27Ruben Barracalla
49:28and the second
49:29Ferrari
49:30and then the
49:30two Toyotas
49:31of Trulli
49:32and Schumacher
49:33Ralph
49:34I'm surprised they
49:35on a little bit
49:35quicker around
49:36this track
49:36but again we
49:37don't really know
49:37what they're doing
49:38on tyres and
49:39fuel loads
49:39David Coulthard
49:40there in the
49:40Red Bull

49:49that engine
49:49to the regulations
49:50I'm surprised
49:51they're not a
49:51little bit quicker
49:52around here
49:52but poor old
49:54Kimi Räikkönen
49:54look down there
49:55he's the big

50:03drivers championship
50:04right now
50:04and he will
50:05lose ten places
50:06on the starting
