The Delhi Police has sought a five-day extension of judicial custody for Cockroach Janata Party leaders Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka following the completion of their initial five-day remand. Authorities cited the breach of an executed peace bond, alleged illegal entry into Jantar Mantar after it was denotified as a protest site, and law-and-order concerns ahead of the festive season. The Special Executive Magistrate court is currently hearing the matter regarding whether an extension of custody is warranted for the bailable offence under Section 126 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita.

00:00Is there going to be an extended jail term for Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka?
00:05Because what we hear is, remember the five-day judicial custody that concluded for the Kokrot Janata party leaders.
00:11What next? Delhi police are seeking an extension of their jail term.
00:15The Delhi police is saying they have breached a bond that they themselves signed, a peace bond.
00:21And then, despite that, they attempted in a behavior that was unacceptable.
00:26This is what the Delhi police is saying.
00:29The Delhi police, therefore, is seeking an extension of the custody for Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka.
00:36Both were nabbed for breaching the peace bond.
00:39They entered into Jantar Mantar illegally after it was denotified as a protest site.
00:43Police says that this is strong enough as an evidence for them to continue to live in the Tihar jail
00:51and judicial custody.
00:53Just remember, basically, since October 13th, they have been held by Delhi police.
00:57They have been in the prison.
00:59Anshul Singh is joining me for the latest on that.
01:02Anshul, is this really such a big crime that the Kokrot Janata party's two young leaders, Ashutosh Ranka and Saurav
01:09Das,
01:09need to have an extended judicial custody for the next few days as well?
01:13How is the Delhi police saying this is significant?
01:20Well, yes, the Delhi police has gone ahead and sought a five-day extension of the judicial custody of both
01:26Ashutosh Ranka and Saurav Das.
01:27There are certain reasons that have been cited by them, including the festive season that is around the corner.
01:33And there is this mistrust between the CGP workers and the Delhi police.
01:38That is one of the reasons probably for which they have gone ahead and asked for a five-day extension
01:42of judicial custody.
01:44The hearing is still underway.
01:45It remains to be seen if the SEM will deem it necessary that for a bailable offence, a person could
01:52be kept inside the jail cells for more than five days.
01:56Because generally, in such cases of Section 126 of the BNSS, a bail is a very normal thing that happens
02:03within a time period of 24 hours.
02:05But in this case, already more than five days has elapsed and the Delhi police has sought an extension of
02:11another five days from the SEM court.
02:13So in the next few minutes, we are expecting the verdict to come out if at all an extension of
02:16the judicial custody is given.
02:18And if the extension is given, for how many days will that extension be given to the Delhi police so
02:23that both Ashutosh Ranka and Saurav Das could stay behind the bars specifically during this festive season.
02:28Let's listen to the other side also, Anjoon.
02:29What do you think that those in defense of Saurav Das and Ranka, what are they saying?
02:33Why do these two leaders need to now be moved out of the prison that trespassing, as it is being
02:38called, of the Jantar Mantra side cannot be considered such a big crime?
02:46Well, the CJP per se officially has not issued any statement at this point in time as the hearing is
02:52still underway.
02:52But yes, what Delhi police sources are telling us that the reason for which they have sought an extension of
02:59the custody is because Deshara is just around the corner.
03:03And if at all, there are certain elements or there are certain party workers who might try to hit the
03:08streets again.
03:09And there could be a law and order situation specifically in the areas of Connaught Place where the NTA has
03:14already gone ahead and sought help from the courts.
03:18And in fact, they have also gone ahead and filed a petition in which they have claimed that they have
03:25had losses of more than Rs. 200 crores for a single day of business that was not undertaken due to
03:31the protest that was happening at Connaught Place.
03:34So, all these reasons are something that the Delhi police has looked into.
03:37Anjoon, do update as in when a decision is taken.
03:39Five-day judicial custody is done for Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka.
03:42Delhi police is seeking an extension.
03:44Will that happen or will they be able to get the bail and be out in this case?
03:49And if there is an extension, till when could that be also happening?
03:53We'll be tracking all that and more.
