00:00It's still, the series is still going on.
00:02Yeah, boy, how were those people when they went to bed?
00:04Like, you've been lubed up all day.
00:07Probably dead tired.
00:08Probably really tired today.
00:09I know one that did both, but probably wasn't lubed up.
00:13Well, that's on him.
00:13Daryl Ryder joins us right now.
00:15And Daryl is brought to you by...
00:17Jibin Jewelers, Cleveland's premier jewelry store.
00:19Daryl, were you lubed up all day yesterday?
00:21I was not.
00:22Why not?
00:22You would have been a lot more fun.
00:24Probably.
00:25I'm just messing with you, buddy.
00:27Duty calls.
00:28If I was lubed up, we would not be having this conversation this morning.
00:31We'll start Browns here with you.
00:33Then we do have to get to the Guardians because Gavin Williams not being available today is
00:38definitely a choice that people are talking about.
00:39And so I want to ask you about that here in a moment.
00:41But there's a lot of questions about sustainability.
00:44And we're not talking politics here.
00:45We're talking Browns.
00:47Four and two, you're six weeks into the season.
00:49You're winning games.
00:50I think you're thin in your depth.
00:52And I thought that was going to be a real concern.
00:55Guys are playing hurt.
00:56Your offense is doing enough.
00:58And honestly, Daryl, I think it is.
00:59And the reason I think it is, for all those reasons I just said, it doesn't sound like
01:02it's sustainable.
01:03But I think you take a look around the league and there's just so many teams struggling to
01:09not lose games.
01:10And I mean that sincerely.
01:12Not lose them.
01:13Not win them.
01:13I mean to not lose the games.
01:15There are so many teams that are struggling and doing silly things.
01:18Yeah.
01:19I mean, it's all about the final score.
01:21And the Browns were able to do just enough yesterday to get by the Ravens.
01:27But offensively, in Todd Munkin, the video circulating, the team put it out of his locker room speech.
01:38Certainly, there are a lot of issues on the offensive side of the ball.
01:41There's no question about it.
01:42And I think that when you talk about the Browns, that's where this sustainability thing comes in.
01:46Because the quarterback play isn't really good.
01:49The running game isn't really good.
01:50The passing game yesterday was a hot mess.
01:54So it's fair to ask those questions.
01:58But also, at the same time, the result is a win.
02:03And they've won four of their first six games.
02:06And they got an opportunity this week to make it five of seven.
02:09So I understand why those questions get asked.
02:15But would you rather have a performance like that yesterday and lose?
02:19Or would you rather find a way to win a game?
02:22And look, to Deshaun Watson's credit, to the Browns' credit, they, more often than not,
02:28have been finding ways to win games in the fourth quarter late,
02:32even when things have been a train wreck for most of the games.
02:36So I give them credit, give the defense credit.
02:39The defense played well.
02:41That's sustainable.
02:43So it's just a matter of getting things fixed on the offensive side of things
02:47and getting Deshaun Watson back on schedule.
02:50Yeah, I think you're right about that.
02:51And I said, you know, I don't care if it's an ugly win or a pretty win.
02:55I'd love to win pretty, but as long as it's a win, I don't think it matters.
02:58Because, again, there's so many teams that are struggling to put together anything consistent
03:03when it comes to quality play, winning, things of that nature.
03:08Like, I think you've got to look at it now.
03:11And this was a measuring stick game.
03:14I understand it was Tyler Huntley, not Lamar Jackson.
03:16But this is still a game I thought that they would probably lose,
03:18and they went out there and they won.
03:19And I do think we can talk about playoffs and approaching the playoffs.
03:24Maybe you think I'm still a little premature, but that's how I feel.
03:27Yeah, I'm not ready to go to the playoff part yet.
03:30But, look, Tyler Huntley wasn't terrible yesterday.
03:35You know, the numbers between him and Deshaun Watson were pretty comparable.
03:40They were almost identical.
03:42Huntley, I think, was like 19-31 for around 165.
03:47And Deshaun was 16-26 for around 165, each team.
03:54You know, scored a touchdown.
03:56The Browns got two field goals.
03:58Baltimore got just one field goal.
04:01So, you know, the offensive performances were, you know, pretty similar.
04:07And, again, I credit the Browns' defense for making just enough plays.
04:12That Derrick Henry fumble, you know, caused by Carson Sweissinger there,
04:17like, I mean, that was a huge, huge play in that game.
04:21And I would argue that turned the tide in the game in the Browns' favor there.
04:26So, there's, again, offensively, there's a lot of work they need to do.
04:31This run game doesn't cut it.
04:33Deshaun Watson, at times, yesterday looked like he was, you know,
04:36seeing ghosts and afraid to throw the football.
04:38I don't know what was going on there.
04:41But he wasn't afraid to throw the 33-yard completion to Jerry Judy over the middle.
04:46And, you know, let's give Jerry Judy some love this morning, too.
04:50This is a guy that, yeah, I mean, this is a guy that's not been featured in this offense at
04:54all this year.
04:55I think that's fair to say.
04:56He's not been featured at all.
04:57But now that's two games that he has stepped up and made plays on the final drive to help you
05:04win the football game.
05:05And, to me, he's doing his job.
05:08When his number's called, make the plays.
05:10His number isn't going to get called a lot.
05:12And that's hard to do.
05:13You know, people want to talk about body language when it comes to him and stuff like that.
05:17He's mentally in it.
05:19You have to be mentally in it to be able to come through in those situations.
05:24So, he's clearly focused on the task at hand.
05:27So, I think Jerry Judy also deserves a tremendous amount of credit here.
05:32All right, Daryl, since you were there, we heard on the broadcast, Daryl Moose Johnson kept talking about the receivers
05:37not able to get open.
05:39And watching at home, you know, we don't really get that view.
05:42But it did seem like a tough day to create separation for those rookie wide receivers.
05:48At the same time, you know, Deshaun was clearly not seeing the field well.
05:52So, what is fixable there?
05:55Yeah, well, I got to go back and watch it this morning on the All-22 to see if guys
06:02were getting open.
06:03Because there were times where it looked like Deshaun Watson had options with guys open.
06:10And that's why I need to go back and look at it again.
06:13Because just because in the moment it looked that way doesn't mean that that's ultimately what the reality was.
06:20So, I do think that Deshaun missed some opportunities.
06:23I thought Deshaun held the ball too long in some instances.
06:27And he looked gun-shy to me.
06:31And you certainly understand wanting to protect the ball, right?
06:35I mean, that's number one job of the quarterback.
06:37Don't want to make dumb mistakes and commit costly turnovers.
06:41Certainly understand that.
06:42But also, too, you got to pull the trigger and throw the ball when the opportunities are there.
06:47So, I do need to go back and look at that All-22, the end zone copy there.
06:51See what those route trees look like.
06:53And if there indeed were some opportunities.
06:55Because I just, I kind of felt like Deshaun really was caught in between a little too much yesterday.
07:01But, again, I need to, I got to take a second look.
07:04How's Grant Delpit? Do we know?
07:07Well, I mean, concussion protocol, so you know how those things go.
07:11Casey Concepcion, we saw what happened against the Jets.
07:15And he was able to come back and be available.
07:17So, you know, I don't anticipate much in the way of an update from Todd Munkin.
07:22That's an area he doesn't like to talk about, does not like to talk about injuries when asked about him.
07:27But we'll just see how the week progresses with Delpit.
07:31Daryl Ryder joining us on this show.
07:33Go ahead, Daryl.
07:33All right, Daryl, they did get a few good runs yesterday.
07:36But overall, the course of the game, I thought they got very predictable.
07:40And it seemed like they didn't have much of a shot.
07:43That Baltimore was living in the backfield on some of these carries.
07:46How can they mix that up and, you know, kind of get a little more creative?
07:49Well, I still think that running from the shotgun is a problem.
07:55That's just my opinion.
07:57You know, obviously, Todd Munkin, the Browns, they disagree with me because they continue to do it.
08:03I think also, too, that even though Deshaun Watson, I think it was last week, told us he doesn't have
08:08a preference when it comes to shotgun, he clearly does, right?
08:10I mean, Todd Munkin is trying to do things to make Deshaun Watson as comfortable as possible.
08:15So it's pretty clear to me that Deshaun prefers being in the gun.
08:19And I guess that's fine.
08:23Also, too, I think that part of it's running back vision.
08:27I think that that's got to be a component here.
08:30I don't know what the lane assignments are or the blocking assignments are on these run plays.
08:34But I can't believe that everything is the offensive line's fault here.
08:41I thought Estame did a pretty good job considering he just walked off the street.
08:46You know, Jaleel McLaughlin was your leading rusher there.
08:50He averaged close to four yards per carry, which is about one yard per carry more than they've been averaging.
08:57So a little bit of a positive there, Anthony.
09:01But, yeah, the run game has been sputtering since week one.
09:04And, you know, we're six weeks into this thing.
09:07And I don't know if they're going to be able to get it on track.
09:09All right, Jared Verse, he's gotten pressures.
09:13It's not like league leading or anything like that.
09:16But he doesn't have a sack.
09:18He's like the one dude on defense that doesn't have a sack.
09:21How do you feel like he is playing?
09:23And what about his role?
09:24Yesterday I tweeted out on a third down pass rush.
09:27I saw your video.
09:28I saw your video.
09:29And it was interesting.
09:29Yeah, it was interesting, the debate.
09:30Because a lot of people were like, Lima, that's a stunt.
09:33And I'm like, I don't remember Miles Garrett just doing that when it's a third down, you're supposed to pin
09:39your ears back.
09:40Like, is that the role they have him in?
09:42I think that there might be a little difference in the roles.
09:45And what Mike Rutenberg is asking of Jared Verse versus what Jim Schwartz asked of Miles Garrett.
09:54Because they are two different players, Anthony.
09:57You know, Miles Garrett's a stone-cold quarterback killer.
10:00We know that.
10:02You know, Jared Verse is a guy who plays more.
10:08This is going to sound wrong, and I don't mean it to come off this way.
10:12But this is the only way I think I can put it.
10:14You know, maybe I should say complementary instead of team defense.
10:18I think Jared Verse is more of a complementary defense type of player.
10:24And because how I'm looking at it right now, I understand why you're asking about the lack of sacks for
10:30Verse because of the trade that was made and the expectation there.
10:34But the Browns defense, they're still getting sacks at pretty much the same clip as they did when they had
10:40Miles Garrett.
10:41The difference is Jared Verse isn't getting the sacks.
10:44Everybody else is.
10:45So, and the pressure on the quarterback is still, in my view, I feel like it's just as good as
10:54having Miles Garrett here.
10:55So, I get it.
10:57People want to see Jared Verse pile up some sacks here.
11:01I think I would probably be more receptive to that conversation if nobody was getting to the quarterback on this
11:08defense.
11:08But that's not the case.
11:10They are getting home and getting to the quarterback.
11:14Dangerous, Daryl Ryder, joining us on the show.
11:16Okay, Gavin Williams, not available tonight.
11:19Do you agree or disagree with Stephen Vogt's decision?
11:22Well, as far as starting the game, yes.
11:26But, obviously, tonight, all hands have to be on deck.
11:29Heck, you don't win, and the season is over.
11:31It's just that simple.
11:32So, I'm curious if we're going to have another situation with Chicago, right?
11:37Maybe he comes in in the 8th or 9th inning to finish the game off and then starts Game 7.
11:45That's the thought that popped into my mind.
11:48But, Stephen Vogt, his words, not mine, absolutely not, was what he said out of the question.
11:56Is what he said last night when he was asked about Gavin Williams' availability to start tonight.
12:01So, I'm curious as to what they're going to do with their season on the line.
12:07The bullpen game thing did not work the other night.
12:10And when you're playing four games in a row, this is part of the reason I don't like bullpen games.
12:15I understand why they're doing it, but don't mean I've got to like it.
12:18But, your bullpen gets taxed.
12:20The bullpen was taxed last night.
12:22And Vogt had to go to like Cade Smith.
12:25Who, by the way, they're going to need Cade Smith the next two nights.
12:27But, you had to burn him last night in a game that you were losing.
12:32You weren't tied.
12:33You weren't winning.
12:34You were losing last night.
12:35And, you had to use your closer because you burned your bullpen up the night before in a bullpen game.
12:41So, who would you open up with if you were going to open up with somebody?
12:44Probably Sean Armstrong again.
12:46Yeah, I mean, he just is kind of like the handyman of that pitching staff, right?
12:52I thought he did a nice job opening up the other night.
12:58That was Vogt's decision to pull him quickly.
13:01And, you know, I understand the philosophy that they don't want these pitchers seeing this raised lineup two and three
13:10times in a game.
13:11They certainly don't want the starter, it feels like, seeing this raised lineup three times in a game.
13:20Rasmussen saw the Guardians last night three times and it didn't matter.
13:23He had no problem blowing through that Guardians lineup last night.
13:28So, I struggle with, I will admit, the modern ways of Major League Baseball when it comes to managing pitching
13:38staffs.
13:39I really miss those seven inning starts in the postseason and then you turn it over to your setup guy
13:46in the eighth and brought in the closer in the ninth and you were done.
13:50But, we're in an era now where you're using five relievers a game.
13:54That's just the way the game is played today and I have to adapt.
13:58I want to know, Daryl, how did you sleep at night?
14:02How did you go to bed?
14:04Were you excited about the Browns game or downtrodden about the Guardians?
14:09I passed out.
14:10I thought about neither.
14:12There you go.
14:13See, that's the way to do it.
14:14That's pretty good.
14:15I was tired the last 36 hours with the two ALCS games and the Browns game.
14:22A ton of fun, but I did get a good night's sleep.
14:26So, hopefully the Guardians can do what they did with the White Sox, go to Tampa, win two.
14:30They're capable of doing it.
14:32I guess maybe I'm not as nervous as some folks are because they've done it again.
14:36They seem to play better on the road for whatever reason.
14:38I don't understand it.
14:40The crowds at the ballpark have been fantastic.
14:44Fans have been into it.
14:46Don't need the music or someone, a screaming scoreboard guy, telling people to make noise.
14:50Like, the fans were naturally into the game.
14:53Certainly miss John Adams.
14:55God, his presence at the park is dearly missed.
15:00But, yeah, I don't know why the Guardians don't play as well at home as they do on the road.
15:05So, I think they win tonight.
15:07I think there will be a Game 7 and flip a coin what happens tomorrow night.
15:10Daryl, thank you for the time.
15:11We'll talk to you Friday.
15:12You bet, guys.
15:13Have a great week.
15:14The always dangerous but fun Daryl Ryder, joining us.
15:17And he was brought to you by?
15:18Ivan Jewelers, Cleveland's premier jewelry store.
15:21Coming up in five minutes, do we agree or do we disagree with Gavin?
15:24With Gavin Williams.
15:25Do we agree or disagree with Steven Vogt?
15:27If I agreed with him and loved what he did on Thursday, can I really just flip-flop tonight?
15:33Just based on results?
15:34Ken Carman, Anthony Lyman, take us with you to work on that free Odyssey.
