00:00Now, I want you to keep this in mind.
00:03When everyone stepped away, Jesus reached out.
00:09Today, we're continuing our journey through the New Testament,
00:14stepping into the lives of ordinary people who had extraordinary encounters with Jesus Christ.
00:21We're not simply looking at what happened to them.
00:24We're trying to understand what those experiences may have felt like through their own eyes.
00:33Scripture gives us the foundation,
00:36and thoughtful imagination is going to help us consider the emotions these individuals might have carried.
00:44Those imagined reflections are not additional biblical facts.
00:50They're literary interpretation.
00:52And our story today comes from Mark 1, verses 40 through 45,
01:00Matthew 8, verses 1 through 4,
01:03and Luke 5, verses 12 through 16,
01:07where we meet a man suffering from leprosy.
01:13And here's the question I want you to carry into this story.
01:17What happens when a man who has grown accustomed to people avoiding him
01:23discovers that Jesus is willing to reach out and touch him?
01:31Here's the story through his eyes.
01:35I don't remember when I first began feeling invisible.
01:40It's strange because people certainly noticed me.
01:44They noticed my condition.
01:47They noticed the danger they believed I represented.
01:51They noticed enough to keep their distance.
01:56But there is a difference between being noticed and being seen.
02:01I was a man with leprosy.
02:04And that disease had become the defining reality of my existence.
02:10There had been a time when life was different.
02:14I could remember what ordinary human connection meant.
02:19What it felt like to belong somewhere without my condition entering the room before I did.
02:26Now, separation was part of my life.
02:32The law of Moses established rules concerning people with conditions like mine.
02:38Those rules served purposes that I understood.
02:42But understanding them didn't remove the pain of living apart.
02:49What I found most difficult wasn't simply the physical suffering.
02:54It was wondering whether anyone could still see the person beneath it.
03:01I sometimes imagined what it would feel like to stand among other people
03:06without their attention immediately turning toward my disease.
03:12To have someone look into my eyes without first thinking about what was wrong with me.
03:20And somewhere beneath those thoughts was a question I struggled to answer.
03:28If people could no longer welcome me, did that mean God had withdrawn his welcome as well?
03:37Then I began hearing about Jesus.
03:42I heard that he taught with authority and that remarkable things were happening through him.
03:49I didn't know what would happen if I approached him.
03:52I only knew that something inside me refused to surrender the possibility that my life could be different.
04:01Hope is difficult when suffering has taught you to expect disappointment.
04:08But I went anyway.
04:12When I reached Jesus, I couldn't pretend to be anything other than what I was.
04:18Luke's gospel describes me as full of leprosy.
04:35The words recorded in Mark 1 verse 40 are exactly what I needed to say.
04:44If thou wilt, thou canst make me clean.
04:50I didn't question whether Jesus possessed the power.
04:55I believed he could heal me.
04:57What frightened me was the possibility that he might not want to.
05:03Perhaps you can understand that difference.
05:07It's one thing to believe somebody has the ability to help you.
05:12It's another thing entirely to trust that they care enough to do it.
05:19I had become accustomed to people keeping their distance.
05:24But Jesus, well, Jesus didn't respond the way I might have expected.
05:31Mark tells us he was moved with compassion.
05:35Then something extraordinary happened.
05:40Jesus stretched out his hand and touched me.
05:44I can only imagine how overwhelming that moment must have been.
05:49The very person I had approached for help was willing to make contact with me.
05:57He didn't treat my condition as though it had erased my humanity.
06:02And then he spoke the words recorded in Mark 1 verse 41.
06:10I will be thou clean.
06:15Those words answered the deepest uncertainty I had brought to him.
06:20He was willing.
06:22And immediately my leprosy departed.
06:26The condition that had controlled my life was gone.
06:32Jesus instructed me to show myself to the priest and offer what Moses had commanded for my cleansing.
06:40He also told me not to spread the news.
06:44But I went out and told people anyway.
06:48Scripture records that I spread the matter so widely that Jesus could no longer openly enter the city.
06:57I had received an extraordinary gift.
07:01Yet I hadn't obeyed his instruction.
07:05That's part of my story too.
07:10I don't want you to imagine that encountering Jesus meant suddenly understood everything or responded perfectly.
07:22I did not.
07:24I had experienced his compassion.
07:27But I still needed to learn obedience.
07:31And perhaps that is one of the most important things about this encounter.
07:36Jesus had not required me to arrive as a perfect man.
07:42I came to him in desperate need.
07:46And he met me with compassion.
07:54Friends, what can this man teach us about our own lives?
07:58You know, when I think about this man's encounter with Jesus,
08:02what moves me most isn't simply the healing.
08:07It's the question he asked before the healing happened.
08:11He believed Jesus could help him.
08:14But he wasn't sure Jesus would.
08:17I think there are people listening right now who understand that feeling more than they may want to admit.
08:26And here are five lessons that I want us to consider.
08:32Your suffering does not define your worth.
08:37You know, this man lived with a condition that affected nearly every part of his life.
08:42But Jesus saw more than his disease.
08:46Maybe you're dealing with an illness that has taken away some of your independence.
08:52Maybe unemployment has shaken your confidence.
08:57Maybe you've experienced a divorce.
09:00And quietly wonder whether people see you differently now.
09:04Your circumstances can change your daily life without changing your value as a human being.
09:14Please, my friends, don't allow the hardest chapter of your life to become the only way you describe yourself.
09:24You are still worthy of dignity, compassion, and love.
09:33You don't have to hide your brokenness from Jesus.
09:37This man approached Jesus with his condition completely visible.
09:43There was nothing he could disguise.
09:46You know, I think that sometimes we spend so much energy trying to appear strong
09:52that we become afraid to admit how much we are actually struggling.
09:57We tell people we're fine when we're worried about paying the bills.
10:02We smile through the day while carrying tremendous anxiety.
10:10I want you to remember that prayer doesn't require pretending.
10:15You can come before Jesus and tell him the truth.
10:19You can say you're frightened, confused, disappointed, or exhausted.
10:24God already knows your circumstances.
10:29And honesty gives you a place to begin trusting him through them.
10:37God's willingness to love is not a promise of immediate healing.
10:43Now, this is an important distinction that I want you to understand.
10:48Jesus healed this man immediately.
10:51But scripture does not teach that every faithful person will experience the same outcome in their lifetime.
11:00Some people pray for years while living with chronic illness.
11:05Some marriages don't recover.
11:09Some financial problems take longer to resolve than anyone expected.
11:14And some losses leave a permanent emptiness in our earthly lives.
11:21None of those circumstances automatically mean that God has abandoned you.
11:27The compassion Jesus demonstrated in this encounter reveals his character.
11:34Not a guarantee that every circumstance will change according to our preferred timetable.
11:42We can trust his goodness while still acknowledging how painful life sometimes feels.
11:55Rejection from people is not rejection from God.
12:00Now, I want you to imagine how accustomed this man must have become to separation.
12:06Now, think about somebody who feels isolated today.
12:11Maybe your children have stopped calling.
12:14Maybe friendships have disappeared.
12:18Maybe you've reached the season of life when the telephone rarely rings.
12:24Loneliness can convince you that your absence wouldn't matter.
12:29But another person's failure to recognize your worth doesn't determine your worth before God.
12:39Jesus did not overlook this suffering man.
12:43And when you're feeling forgotten,
12:46I want to encourage you to remember that Jesus Christ's compassion
12:51reaches into places where human relationships sometimes fail.
13:00Following Jesus means listening, not simply celebrating.
13:06There's a difficult detail at the end of this encounter.
13:11Jesus instructed the man not to spread the news, but he did anyway.
13:17His healing was real, yet his response was not completely obedient.
13:23That reminds me how easily we can celebrate God's blessings while overlooking his instructions.
13:31We might thank God for our families while failing to give them our attention.
13:38We might ask for peace while continuing to nurture resentment.
13:44You see, faith becomes meaningful in the choices we make after the emotional moment has passed.
13:53Gratitude matters, but so does obedience.
14:01In closing, I want to bring you back to that moment when Jesus stretched out his hand.
14:08Before the man experienced healing, he experienced compassion.
14:13And I wonder how many people listening today desperately need to understand that distinction.
14:20Maybe you've been praying about something that hasn't yet changed.
14:26Maybe you're carrying regret or wondering whether your life has become too complicated for God to care about it.
14:35I can tell you exactly how your circumstances will unfold, but I can remind you of what the Gospels say
14:45about Jesus Christ.
14:48He was moved with compassion toward a suffering man whom others had reason to avoid.
14:56He saw the person beneath the condition, and he answered that man's desperate request with mercy.
15:05Whatever you're facing, don't measure your value by the distance other people have placed between themselves and you.
15:15Being kept at a distance by the world does not mean you are beyond the compassion of Jesus Christ.
