Willard and Dibs discuss the change in the 49ers' offense before and after Mike Evans left with a bothersome Achilles.

00:00We can talk this out.
00:01I really, really want to talk this out.
00:03888-957-9570.
00:05But you tell me.
00:07Like, this is interesting to me.
00:095-1-0.
00:10Well, the Chiefs seem to do just fine with Walker and Kelsey.
00:14Here's Willard out here acting like we don't have the best tight end ever.
00:19Are the Niners not doing okay?
00:21Yeah, they're doing all right.
00:22Did I, like...
00:24They're hanging in there.
00:24Was there a three-game losing streak that I missed?
00:28That was a few years ago.
00:30Is that so...
00:31So, they're 5-1-1-0.
00:35And then the second half comes last night.
00:39And now we're like, oh, these freaking guys.
00:42Is that like...
00:43Sure, let's figure out what the Niners should do
00:48if Mike Evans is missing this weekend.
00:50I'd call it a massive challenge.
00:52I think that they might be up for it.
00:55I think it helps them.
00:57There's two things that help them from an emotional standpoint.
01:00One, they got smacked around a little bit in the second half last night.
01:03And two, if Mike Evans doesn't play,
01:07there's going to be a whole week of people telling them,
01:09it's okay, you can just go 6-1 and go into your buy and get better.
01:13And that will piss them off,
01:15and they're going to try to go 7-0.
01:17The Niners are...
01:18I saw it last night before I even went to bed.
01:21The Niners are going to be told all week,
01:23well, you'll lose this week, but it's okay.
01:26It's okay.
01:26I told you that back in, like, June or whatever,
01:29when the schedule came out.
01:31I said, this is a spot right before the buy on a short week,
01:35and you have to go for your first game that starts at 10 in the morning.
01:39And I thought Atlanta would be a little better than this,
01:42but they're starting to cook a little bit now.
01:43Well, they're an interesting team.
01:45Atlanta is on my short list of, I can't figure you out, teams.
01:49Do you know what I mean?
01:50Like, they look really dynamic for a second.
01:52Remember, they went to Lambeau three or four weeks ago,
01:56absolutely squashed the Packers.
01:58And then they come home, and they're slinging it on Sunday night football
02:02against the Baltimore Ravens, and the next thing you know, poof,
02:06like they just collapsed in the fourth quarter.
02:10And then since then, like, their offense just doesn't look great,
02:16but their defense is sneaky good, especially their run defense.
02:20So I can't put my finger on Atlanta yet.
02:24Yeah, they're a puzzle.
02:25Yeah, and then the Niners are going to walk in there
02:26without any of their receivers.
02:28And so, like, okay, do the math.
02:30I don't know how that all works.
02:32Falcons won their first two, lost their first two,
02:34then won their next two, then lost the two after that.
02:37And it's, you know, okay, you got your quarterback back now,
02:39and so time to cook.
02:41And you put up 23 against Chicago,
02:43but you need to get up at least 30 against Chicago.
02:45And so they've got the Niners, then they go to Tampa,
02:49and then they've got the Bengals.
02:51And so they're in a spot where it's time to Casey Schmidt
02:56or get off the pot because you're two and four.
02:58Yeah.
02:59You got to start making some hay here.
03:01Here's what Shanahan said on the Mike Evans missed time.
03:07How much Mike Evans was missed in the second half?
03:11I mean, it's definitely a big deal when he was a player like Mike,
03:14but we got a sack on, I mean, our first drive,
03:17I thought it was one of our better drives of the game.
03:19We ran the ball real well.
03:20We just got a ball tipped on third down.
03:21That would have been a score, and we got a field goal.
03:23The next two drives, really, you know, we got a sack on first down,
03:26got us into second and 20.
03:27We went three and out both times.
03:29And then the fourth time was a four-minute drill.
03:31We were trying to run the clock out.
03:32So just the way it ended up being,
03:34Mike wouldn't have had a chance to have much of an effect there in the second half.
03:37Now, if we would have gotten some first downs and stuff and got driving,
03:39then you would have felt the lack of presence of them.
03:42But we didn't get enough first downs to really show where we would miss them.
03:46Fair or foul, that answer?
03:48It's fair, but I think about the ball that got tipped,
03:51and Juszczyk was open on that pass.
03:53I don't know if Brock saw it, and he also had Cooks open,
03:56and the ball got tipped, and that happens and stuff.
03:59And so, ultimately, the drive stalled out.
04:02The one that I have issue with was the next drive where they took a sack.
04:06You kept seven in to block, and you were trying to do,
04:09not quite a full max protect, but you've got seven in and three out,
04:14and you're trying to make a big play.
04:16You're trying to take a big shot.
04:17I thought it was a bad play call.
04:19Your seven got overwhelmed by their five, might have been six,
04:22and that was unfortunate, but negatives on first down crush most teams,
04:27but especially this Niner team without Mike Evans, you know?
04:30That's a totally fair piece of analysis.
04:32I guess my response to that would be, okay, so if you have an issue with one play,
04:37like some of them are going to go haywire,
04:40and I thought the commanders in the second half changed their defensive approach
04:44because they knew that the 49ers were probably going to have a little bit less faith
04:49in what was going on downfield.
04:51That connection between Brock Purdy and Mike Evans was not there,
04:55plus they're down in the game, so they're thinking,
04:57all right, we're going to crowd the middle.
04:59We're going to come after them and blitz a little bit more.
05:01They blitzed a ton more in the second half,
05:04and the Niner offensive line didn't always handle it.
05:07So they get to Purdy a couple times, and again, yeah,
05:10if you drop back to pass one time on first down,
05:12you take a 10-yard sack, well, now we're not running the ball.
05:16Now everybody knows what we're doing, and it's second and 20,
05:19and you're usually going to punt when you get to second and 20.
05:22So I can't argue what you're saying,
05:24but I do think we're getting a wee bit ahead of ourselves
05:28when we just take those four drives.
05:31We forget that the first one was really good.
05:33We forget that the last one was flat out not going to be a passing drive.
05:37Right.
05:37They're just trying to run the clock.
05:39Four-minute drill, yeah.
05:39Right, and then the two in the middle didn't go well,
05:41but I don't know that I can take that leap and now go,
05:44well, the Niners can't move the ball without Mike Evans.
05:46I just think that in those moments, he had the wrong approach,
05:49and I've been a big Shanna fan.
05:51I think he's had a phenomenal year, and Grandy's grades tomorrow.
05:54It'll be interesting to see how the coaching category is rated
05:59because Raheem Morris has been amazing with what he's called,
06:03and it's obviously easier when it works, and this didn't work for Shanahan,
06:07but you talk about that first drive, and it was three runs,
06:10and then play action to Kittle, the big play,
06:13and then it was two more, three more runs, including a tush push,
06:17so they were running it.
06:18They were moving the chains, and yet next time they got the ball back,
06:22he chose to just get pass happy.
06:24I didn't like it.
06:24Did you hear that, Grandy?
06:26You're doing it.
06:27You're doing it.
06:28It was already sitting on the air.
06:29It's on.
06:30Why wouldn't he?
06:31Well, because.
06:32We could only do it Tuesdays, but today is day after the game.
06:35Right, and tomorrow is opening night for the Warriors,
06:38and I think Grandy was worried that he was trying to squash himself.
06:44He proposed the idea of just not doing his thing.
06:47Well, we also only have three hours of show tomorrow because we got the Valkyries.
06:50Valkyries.
06:50I mean, we could do it today, but, I mean, it's a Victory Tuesday,
06:54and 888-957-9570.
06:56Oh, I can't.
06:58Grandy's out here handing out Fs.
07:00I'm not doing that on a Victory Tuesday.
07:02There may be an F on my report card.
07:04Oh.
07:06Unless I can give him a G.
07:09How about if I give him a J?
07:11Yeah.
07:12J in Boston.
07:13Hey, J.
07:14What's going on?
07:15Thanks for calling.
07:16Oh, you like that one.
07:17Atta babe.
07:19Hi, J.
07:19I like Dibbs' part.
07:20Oh, okay.
07:21What's up?
07:23What you doing, J?
07:25Thanks for taking my call, guys.
07:28Just, no, please, God.
07:29No Warriors or Giants talk today.
07:31Please, God.
07:32You know what I mean?
07:33You're killing us in Boston.
07:34You haven't heard any Warriors or Giants talk.
07:38I'm just throwing a jab in there.
07:40Okay.
07:40I know.
07:41All right.
07:41But anyway, I wanted to call because, you know, doing this game and a little bit when
07:48y'all show, I keep hearing about all these unrealistic trades and stuff and all of that.
07:54But at the end of the day, man, we need to be put over the top.
07:58And I'm so nervous about the way this organization is doing business in a sense where they keep thinking about
08:05tomorrow.
08:06The time is now.
08:08You got Trent Williams, older player.
08:10CMC, older player.
08:11George Kittle, older player.
08:12These young boys are balling.
08:14Go out and get a big dog.
08:16I don't give a damn if you had to give up a first and a second next year.
08:20Go out and get a Garrett Wilson.
08:22If you don't want to get a receiver, go get a Quentin Nelson and we can run the hell out
08:26of the football.
08:27Okay.
08:27It's ridiculous.
08:28With 6-0, we got these young boys balling.
08:31We got these older players.
08:32I'm in Boston, guys.
08:33I'm in Boston.
08:34And all these bandwagon Patriots fans, they used to be 49ers fans, they all think that we're creaming the crop.
08:39They don't know that Kyle Shanahan plays the player politics.
08:43They don't know.
08:44They think CMC is still CMC.
08:46They think George Kittle is still, you know, George Kittle.
08:49You know, even though they're still good players.
08:50But I'm saying that to say, we need to be put over the top.
08:55We need a guy who's going to come in here and we need to be willing to spend whatever it
09:00takes.
09:00Whatever it takes.
09:02Jay.
09:02To get put over the top.
09:03I love it, Jay.
09:04Jay, it's a great take.
09:06I'm sitting here dying to know your evidence that they won't or that they don't.
09:11This is the front office that got Trent Williams.
09:15This is the front office that got Christian McCaffrey.
09:17This is the front office who's made a deal every single deadline when they're a contender.
09:23So why are you nervous?
09:24Like, I fully expect them.
09:26I don't know about a one and a two for Garrett Wilson and all this and that.
09:29But, like, I fully expect aggression at the deadline.
09:33Why don't you?
09:36Well, let's go back to what you just said.
09:38You just said that they made deadline moves.
09:41Okay.
09:42The only deadline move that moved the needle was Emmanuel Seniors.
09:46Keon White doesn't move the needle.
09:48He sure as hell does.
09:49Jay, you ain't watching the game if you don't think Keon White's moving the needle right now.
09:53And Christian McCaffrey counts as a deadline deal just because it was a couple weeks early,
09:58which sounds like what you're advocating now.
10:01Well, you got me there with CMC.
10:04But Keon White, I mean, really good player, really good rotational player.
10:09But I'm talking about we are 6-0, young boys playing.
10:13The whole world thinks that we're this and that.
10:16We need to be put over the top, and we need to spend whatever it takes.
10:20I hear you, Jay.
10:21I hear you, Jay.
10:22All I'm saying is we don't – thank you, Jay.
10:24I don't know that we know that they won't.
10:26I don't know that they won't.
