00:00Honing in on a couple of plays, including the fourth down in the second quarter
00:05where Jaden Daniels threw it into the stands.
00:09And most of us couldn't understand, well, why would he do that?
00:13It's fourth down.
00:14He got nothing to lose.
00:15Throw it in the end zone.
00:16EB actually gave him a bit of a defense.
00:18But that's your dog.
00:20I think he makes a lot of mistakes.
00:22I don't think he's a perfect player,
00:23but I just didn't think that was as big a one as everybody says.
00:26I mean, you know, in a perfect world, sure.
00:28But I think his biggest mistake in that play was leaving the pocket too early.
00:32And I saw someone's evaluation that a lot of the stuff he could have seen in a pre-snap read.
00:36I buy that.
00:38I mean, people say, oh, he can't criticize this guy.
00:41Are you crazy?
00:42Of course I can.
00:43But I just think it's a little overzealous, this particular criticism.
00:48I mean, a perfect world, sure, but not perfect.
00:50It was a dumb play.
00:52It was a dumb play by him.
00:53Here's what the head coach.
00:54No, let me say what I say, and then you can play dance.
00:56And I think that he just left the pocket too soon.
00:59That hurt him.
01:00You know, maybe didn't see it in the pre-snap read.
01:01That hurt him.
01:02So those are mistakes.
01:03And I think the play just closed out on him fast.
01:06And you guys just want him to just chuck everything up for grabs in situations like that.
01:09I don't think he's particularly wired that way.
01:11In a perfect world, shitty?
01:12Okay.
01:13Clearly, Dan Quinn thinks that.
01:16But I don't think it's as big a deal.
01:17It was two minutes into the second quarter.
01:19The game wasn't hanging in the balance there.
01:21No, but it's another brain fart.
01:22I think it's a brain fart just like him taking a sack at the end of the previous game, which
01:26was tied.
01:27I think it's a small brain fart.
01:28Here's what Coach Quinn said about it.
01:30Hey, Dan, real quick.
01:31We're curious what you thought about Jaden after watching the film.
01:35And also, along with that, the decision by him on fourth down to throw it away.
01:39I'm just curious what you thought of that whole sequence.
01:40Yeah, I talked to him.
01:41I'll go work backwards, John, on the penalty.
01:44Even when you know there's a penalty, you still take your shot, man, to go throw it, complete it.
01:50You don't know if it's going to get picked up.
01:52So that was what I expressed to him as he's going through seasons and learning.
01:58These are all the ones that I don't want to wait until the next day to talk to him about.
02:02You hit right into the moment where we're going to hit.
02:06I thought, like most things, like with him, there's some plays that you said, that's an incredible throw.
02:12And there's other ones I'd love him to stay through the look to go.
02:17I knew in this game, John, that with the team speed, like this was going to be a more scramble
02:22to throw game.
02:25You know, against San Francisco, they played more zone.
02:27They'd be back deeper to go.
02:28So, and so I was hoping to see more of that.
02:32But as he's growing into it, more reps with David, more into the system, I'm expecting, you know, his out
02:41-of-pocket, you know, plays to continue.
02:43Like for him to run keepers, you know, off our play-action game, like that's a big part of things
02:48for us.
02:53That's head coach Dan Quinn talking about Jaden Daniels saying he's got to throw the ball there on that fourth
02:59down.
03:00Got to take your shot, as he says.
03:02He wants him to take a chance there.
03:03Well, I think it's also, you guys got to, I'm going to defend him, I mean, sure, in a perfect
03:07world.
03:07But I think, you know, he's bouncing a lot of things.
03:09I've also said I think it's the world's hardest position.
03:11But he's bouncing a lot of things.
03:12They want him to throw the ball away.
03:14They want him to not get hit.
03:16They want him to protect himself.
03:19And I think he just missed those guys.
03:20And so that's a mistake.
03:22And I think the sideline just closed in on him fast.
03:25And, you know, in a one-tenth of one second, he threw it away.
03:28There's no upside to throwing it away, in my opinion.
03:31It was a brain fart we talked about yesterday.
03:33I do think there are some downsides to just taking your shot.
03:37In that situation, they're on like the 12-yard line, I don't remember exactly.
03:41He would have had to totally twist his body around to hit Antonio Williams.
03:45He could have given Rashad White a jump ball.
03:48In the back of the end zone.
03:51I do think that that was a situational awareness problem.
03:53And it seems like Dan Quinn believes that, too.
03:55That he's got to learn from experience.
03:57And you also want him to be a guy who is willing to, like, fit the ball in sometimes.
04:02It doesn't always have to be, like, optimal for him to throw the ball.
04:06I think the throw he made, the first touchdown throw, he fit it in a very tight window.
04:09Yeah.
04:09He makes tight window throws.
04:11He might not make it to the extent that people want him.
04:14And I think he'll probably grow in that.
04:16But he makes tight window throws.
04:18Look, he had a great game.
04:20Doesn't mean he didn't have a brain fart.
04:23He had a great game.
04:24He completed 72.5% of his passes in the game.
04:27I would give him a B on the game if I had to grade him.
04:29He threw for 300 yards.
04:30He threw for two touchdowns.
04:32He didn't have any turnovers.
04:36And they bottled him up.
04:37He tried to run.
04:38He couldn't.
04:38They bottled him up.
04:40But I just think that was a terrible situation.
04:43And then if you look at the end of the game, I kind of put the third down play more
04:47on David Blau at the end of the game where he's got the four verts.
04:53Maybe Jaden's got to step up into the pocket and throw the ball.
04:57But I didn't think that that was great.
04:59And then I blame the offensive line on the last play.
05:02Like, it's madding to me.
05:04Look, you're probably not going to win on a Hail Mary, but at least throw the Hail Mary.
05:08But when three guys beat six, what are you going to do?
05:11It's frustrating not to at least have the ball approach the end zone.
05:15But on that play, arguably our best offensive lineman played the worst.
05:19I know.
05:19It's just football.
05:21I just think that we're being, I don't know.
05:23The offensive line is an issue.
05:27And Nikki Javala talked about it in the preseason when she used that word inoperable.
05:33And people were like, well, Nick Allegretti's not there.
05:37Nick Allegretti.
05:38I mean, you would have thought Nick Allegretti was the savior of this team.
05:42I saw these statistics yesterday and I reposted it at Junk's Radio if you want to see the full numbers
05:48on Twitter.
05:49But Chad Ryan put out these numbers.
05:53Chad Ryan covers the commanders.
05:57The league average for when a pocket collapses is 2.3 seconds.
06:04That's your league average.
06:05So a quarterback has just over two seconds until the pocket starts falling apart.
06:11The commanders give Jaden Daniels 1.5.
06:14That's how bad they are.
06:15That's way below the average.
06:16That was my impression watching the game.
06:19I thought he was, I don't know what the pressure rates were and all that.
06:22It looked like he was under incredible duress and didn't have a lot of confidence.
06:26I think that's why he was leaving the pocket too early in a lot of instances.
06:31If you have a second and a half to throw the ball, you're going to start wanting to escape that
06:35pocket.
06:36And by the way, you're going to miss open guys.
06:37I think this scrutiny, you know, it's so funny, man.
06:41The guy told me because, you know, he had the bad last minute, which was bad, a week ago.
06:48And because of this play on fourth and two, which people are just crucifying him for, he wants to trade
06:53him.
06:54He wants to trade him.
06:55That's absurd.
06:56I mean, are you kidding?
06:58Who is that?
06:58Somebody you know?
06:59No!
07:00Just a random.
07:01You know, that's why I can't respond to that.
07:03It's just ridiculous.
07:04Well, we should trade him.
07:06We should trade him.
07:07No, you just can't take people like that seriously when you see that online.
07:12It's a shame.
07:12But, you know, it's a shame that that was a game we could have stolen.
07:16Where a lot of fans are frustrated when I bring up the pressure rate and the pocket time collapsing
07:22and the commanders having all these issues is, as fans, we kind of all saw it coming.
07:27And they didn't fix it.
07:29Now, they did eventually get Lucas Patrick, right?
07:33I actually think he's been okay.
07:35Yeah, maybe he's been fine.
07:37But, the offensive line overall, and Sam Cosme might have really good PFF grades overall,
07:44but overall, the unit hasn't done that good of a job.
07:47Jay Gruden made a great point yesterday.
07:49I love listening to him.
07:50He always comes on with the guys, I guess on Tuesdays.
07:53With Grant and Danny.
07:54I heard the interview, too.
07:56He's great.
07:56And he said, you know, in your offensive line, you guys are all, you know, they're doing okay.
08:00But, if each guy messes up three or four different plays, that's 15 to 20 plays across out of 50
08:06or something.
08:07Right?
08:08Where those guys screwed up 20 plays?
08:11Yeah.
08:11You know?
08:12And let's be real.
08:13It's just too much.
08:14It's been a big downgrade from Tunsell to Coleman.
08:16And we used the argument that Coleman played all those games during the 2024 season, and they won a ton
08:26of games with Brandon Coleman playing left tackle.
08:28He's been a big downgrade from Tunsell.
08:31If anybody's surprised by that, Laramie Tunsell is probably a Hall of Fame left tackle.
08:35Well, no.
08:35Nobody said he was as good as Tunsell.
08:37But what I argued was that they won all those games in 24 without Tunsell with Coleman there.
08:43And I thought he would be fine.
08:45And I would say maybe he has been fine.
08:47But it is a dramatic downgrade from Tunsell.
08:50I don't know what they can do at this point.
08:52You know, they've got this time during the bye week to kind of figure things out.
08:57I don't know what they can really do with the offensive line.
08:59And, like, you look at some of these numbers, they've actually done a better job, I think, pass blocking than
09:03run blocking.
09:04Like, their run blocking stats are really bad.
09:06Yeah, I think that's where it's by far been the biggest issue.
09:09I also think even when you're not getting it, you've got to stay somewhat committed to it.
09:14And we haven't had that.
09:15I would say this about Peter.
09:16See, drafted Connerly last year when a lot of people wanted him to go wide receiver or go different positions.
09:21He was like, no, I'm going to go with this offensive lineman.
09:23And that was, remember, Kingsbury?
09:24Like, we've seen the video.
09:26Kingsbury was, like, over his shoulder.
09:28You've got to have this guy.
09:30He's like, oh, I love Josh Connerly.
09:32Yeah.
09:33I think Connerly's been fine.
09:35Yeah.
09:35That'll be great.
09:36But the offensive line definitely needs to be upgraded in the offseason and next year.
09:42But this is what they're dealing with.
09:43Jaden Daniels right now doesn't have the greatest offensive line.
09:46When Marcus Mariota was in there, didn't have the greatest offensive line.
09:49But those numbers jumped out at me.
09:51And maybe that's just for this particular week.
09:53But 1.5 seconds before the pocket collapses?
09:55Yeah, well, that's why Dan Quinn is calling it, quote, below the standard.
09:59I mean, didn't you guys think, as you were watching that game, my God, he doesn't have a lot of
10:02time to, you know.
10:04Yeah.
10:04I certainly felt that.
10:05I didn't look at the pressure rates.
10:07I didn't look at the PFF grades.
10:09And they probably did this in preparation.
10:11The one thing is, most of the passes that Jaden threw, like the passes to Chig, passes to Diggs, were
10:17really quick passes.
10:18So that's even before the pass.
10:19Like, maybe they're anticipating the pass rush getting to him.
10:22So the pass rush doesn't really have a chance to get to you when it was just like three-step
10:25drop, boom, Diggs.
10:26Or just roll to the right, boom, Chig.
10:28Well, I think that's what you do.
10:29Yeah, yeah.
10:29When you're in that situation.
10:31And the guys are upset he's not hitting the longer developing stuff.
10:34I don't feel like he had a lot of faith that he could hit some of those.
10:38I mean, were guys running wide open?
10:39Yeah, for sure.
10:40You could see all the analysts.
10:41They can't wait to show you.
10:43I don't think Troy Aikman was making it up that there were downfield opportunities.
10:47If the pocket is completely collapsing, it's hard to connect on those.
10:52It's hard to stand there and have confidence.
10:53But he definitely had shots.
10:56Like, if you watch the all-22, I mean, even on that last drive, he throws a dump off to
11:02White, I believe, on the first play of the drive.
11:04And Chig's right behind him for like a 20-yard pass.
11:06Totally.
11:07But I would argue that that happens with every quarterback.
11:10I mean, multiple times.
11:11Maybe not as much as it happened to Jaden in that particular game.
11:14And he's still learning the position.
11:16But I just think, man, people are just ridiculing the guy.
