00:00I've heard him say nice things, and now people are saying he's also saying other things.
00:03This is your favorite segment when Jaden gets so defensive.
00:07Well, I think it's okay to be defensive when you're correct.
00:09Dan Orlovsky joined Grant and Danny on 106.7 The Fan yesterday,
00:13and here's what he had to say about Jaden as far as him being a little too risk-averse.
00:18You can't be great in that league at that position
00:21unless you are willing to put the ball in harm's way.
00:25Point-blank period.
00:27You pay guys like me to not put the ball in harm's way, and that's why I was a backup.
00:33I wasn't good enough to put the ball in harm's way.
00:36I draft you one, two, three, four, five, top five,
00:39because you have physical ability that others don't to put the ball in harm's way without harming the team.
00:45And I do think that's a thing for Jaden.
00:50There's a lot attached to that.
00:51You know, who's my team?
00:54The pressure on me to score.
00:55What's our defense?
00:58What's our style on offense?
01:01But, you know, you cannot be a great quarterback.
01:06Now, there's a difference between, you know, putting it in harm's way and being reckless, obviously.
01:14But I'd much rather have a quarterback that is so egotistical that they will put the ball in harm's way
01:21rather than have a quarterback that is so cautious that we're the cleanest offense in the NFL.
01:29Yeah, sure.
01:30So you want Jameis Winston then?
01:32It's not what he's saying at all.
01:33He gets so defensive.
01:35No, he wants Josh Allen.
01:37He wants Caleb Williams.
01:37No, no, he's saying he wants someone, like he would much rather have someone who would just take a chance
01:42every time.
01:43Well, that's what Jameis does.
01:44There's a happy medium.
01:46There's a happy medium.
01:46But it's also what Caleb Williams and Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes do.
01:50And he also speaks out of both sides of his mouth.
01:52Because I heard him in the same interview, I believe, say that Jaden's played great this year.
01:56I've actually heard him say the word.
01:58He's played great.
01:59I also heard him say that both sides need to think about maybe not giving him that extension this year,
02:07which I agree with.
02:08There's a common theme, though.
02:09Can I finish the thought?
02:11And it's not because of his play.
02:14It's just because of the durability concern, which I think is totally fair.
02:17Are you not seeing the common theme that Kurt Warner, Dan Orlovsky, and Brian Baldinger, by the way, two quarterbacks
02:27who study film, another former NFL player who studies film, talking about what they're seeing on film.
02:34And also, Troy Aikman, I should throw that one in there.
02:37You got defensive that Troy Aikman was making comments during the game.
02:40He's watching a game from overhead, seeing guys open downfield and Jaden not throwing the ball to him.
02:45Defensive, because I think it's a narrative that's getting a little out of control.
02:49Are there times where he should be taking more chances?
02:50Sure.
02:51But I think that that's a fairly common criticism that you can make of a lot of guys.
02:56Are you missing open guys?
02:58I mean, that's part of the position.
02:59I think it's the way he worded it.
03:02It doesn't sound right to say, I'd put it in harm's way.
03:06Because you're risking turnovers.
03:07Exactly.
03:08That makes me think of Jaden.
03:09But when Aikman and Warner say he's just missing guys that are open, that's different than putting it in harm's
03:14way.
03:15I just didn't like the way Dan Orlovsky worded it.
03:18Well, there's an analytic out there, I think, called turnover-worthy throws.
03:21And those are throws where you could have a turnover.
03:25And they actually will show guys, whether you can pick any quarterback, I'll pick a top guy like Josh Allen.
03:33They show throws that they are making into potential windows which are turnover-worthy and then connecting.
03:40And Jaden isn't throwing them.
03:42Yeah.
03:43So, you might not like the language.
03:46That's usually a good thing, though.
03:47We've always hyped up guys who are not throwing turnover-worthy balls.
03:49I mean, when Aikman says he's missing guys downfield, okay, if there's a guy open and he's missing him, that's
03:54where he should be getting criticized.
03:56I don't think he should be throwing it in tight windows where they could possibly be either picked or incompletions
04:02on big downs.
04:03No, Kurt wants him to just, if you see a one-on-one matchup at all, firing.
04:05But if he's missing guys downfield because he's just, I don't know, he's just hesitant because he doesn't want to
04:10get hit or he just wants to get rid of the ball quickly, that's different.
04:14Part of the two could be, like, one of those guys he really trusts in those scenarios is now injured
04:18and sidelining Terry McLaurin.
04:20Yeah, true.
04:20Like, that's probably the guy that he's most comfortable fitting the ball in a tight window.
04:25I think he just takes a different mentality.
04:26It's my personal belief after watching him for two and a half years, just like you guys, is that I
04:31think he lets the game come to him and he picks his spots.
04:33And I guess people don't like that and they want him to, you know, which is just a different mentality,
04:38just take more shots overall.
04:41Okay.
04:41But I just don't think that's how he approaches it, personally.
04:45Yeah, but he's too talented to be a game manager as a passer.
04:49I'm not saying he's a runner.
04:50I'm not saying he's a game manager.
04:52He's been playing like a game manager.
04:54He's very cautious.
04:55He doesn't take, he's not taking the shots.
04:57Jameis Winston, I mean, he makes bad decisions, but he also has a lot of errant throws and things like
05:02that.
05:02That's why those numbers pile up for the interceptions.
05:05I remember when Kirk was here, there was a discussion one time where we found out that the wide receivers
05:11loved playing with Kirk because Kirk would take chances.
05:15They didn't care about the interceptions.
05:16They loved the fact that he would throw the ball downfield and go for it.
05:20And the coaches really didn't have a problem with it either because it worked.
05:25Yeah, you're going to have interceptions.
05:26You're not going to have interceptions.
05:27No, the coaches did have a problem with it.
05:29We had constant conversations about the turnover gene.
05:32There are too many.
05:34It was a discussion, but it was also kind of like how he played and it worked a lot of
05:39times.
05:39I think he improved his decision-making, improved, et cetera, as his career.
05:44I don't think he would have progressed and had the career he had if he played the way he did
05:47here early on.
05:48How would you grade Jameis' play this year?
05:50B.
05:51So this is a geeky stat.
05:56In terms of quarterback efficiency, which is a stat who Kevin Cole puts out.
06:04I think we used to have Kevin Cole on.
06:05He might have been with PFF, Sumer Sports, one of those.
06:08One of these stat nerds.
06:10So quarterback efficiency, Josh Allen's at one, Brock Purdy, two, Goff, three, Caleb Williams, four, Drake May, five.
06:18Jaden Daniels is at 14.
06:20Now, Patrick Mahomes is at 13.
06:22It's not terrible.
06:24Stafford is at 15.
06:26Quarterback efficiency, it goes to EPA per play.
06:31He's just not firing on all cylinders like he did as a rookie.
06:36I think that's fair to say.
06:38As a rookie, you would have given him an A.
06:40Well, I think he ran more, too.
06:42You've got to remember, as a rookie, he ran for 900 yards.
06:45He's not running as much.
06:46But the passing isn't the same.
06:48It's a huge difference.
06:49It's a little off.
06:50Listen, I think all of the individual criticisms are fair to a point.
06:55I just think it's getting to a point now where it's becoming, like, it's just cliche.
07:01And I just think it's being overstated.
07:04Like, I don't think...
07:05I think he's been solid.
07:07He's also with this...
07:07He's not been at his elite level, but I think he's been very solid.
07:09He's also in his second offensive system in three years.
07:12Solid.
07:13You just used the word solid, though.
07:14You want more than solid from Jayden Daniels.
07:17I gave him a B.
07:17I didn't give him an A.
07:18I gave him a B.
07:19I would like my quarterback to play at an A.
07:21Of course.
07:22Of course.
07:22He could play better.
07:23Of course.
07:24I'm not saying he's playing at his best.
07:27But I think that I'm just defending his turf and saying, I think he's playing pretty okay,
07:35considering last year was a wash, banged up, playing on the freaking dislocated elbows,
07:41hanging in there.
07:42His offensive line's kind of a mess, in my opinion.
07:44He doesn't look super comfortable, and yet he's given him a chance to win.
07:48You know, gave him a chance to win in that, what, Niners game.
07:51But don't you think what Kurt Warner, Dan Orlovsky, Troy Aikman, Brian Baldinger,
07:56all that they're saying is fair?
07:59Because you seem to be very defensive.
08:01I know.
08:02I'm going, you can, you know, you think that to say to be defensive means you're wrong.
08:08You can be defensive.
08:10So you're saying they're all wrong.
08:12No.
08:13There's subtlety to it.
08:14My defense of it is, is there's some truth to that, but I think it's being overstated.
08:19That's all.
08:20I think it's being overstated.
08:22Does he miss receivers?
08:22Of course.
08:23Should he take more chances?
08:24Sure.
08:25I'm sure you could point to a couple plays where you rather wish he would have fired one there.
08:29Of course.
08:30But that doesn't mean that.
08:31That doesn't cloud all of the good things that he's also doing.
08:34You're making it sound like it's more bad than good.
08:37I'm not saying that.
08:38I think he's played okay.
08:39I think solid's a good term for him.
08:42I think.
08:42But he should be, when you draft somebody as high, which Orlovsky brought up, and when
08:47you see the potential, which he showed as a rookie, you want him to play as a top 10 quarterback,
08:54not a middle-of-the-pack quarterback.
08:56I think he'll tick up in your mind.
08:57I think he'll tick up in your mind.
08:58I think he will.
08:59He should.
09:00As the season progresses.
09:01He should.
09:02Yeah, he's great.
09:03I think he's a great player.
09:04He's not playing great.
09:05I think he's a great player.
09:06He's had a B season so far.
09:08In a very tumultuous season.
09:09How would you grade him, Jason?
09:10Jason, just individual play.
09:17Probably a C+.
09:19I think he's got to run more.
09:21I agree.
09:22Because that's where his main weapon are his legs.
09:25It's not his arm, in my opinion.
09:26He's had 33 rushing yards in the last two games.
09:28Yeah, I think he's got to do more of that.
09:29And maybe it's the style and the design of what Blau wants to do, and he just doesn't
09:34have it there.
09:35But I think that's more of a weapon than he's using.
09:39He just comes somewhere between the two previous games, he had 103 and 69 yards rushing in
09:45the Giants and the Dallas game.
09:47In the last two, he's had 10 and 23.
09:49Yeah.
09:50I think that's where he's got to be.
09:51I agree with that.
09:52He's got to be in that 40 to 60 range.
09:54That takes him to that next level.
09:55But just in terms of QBR, and that's a stat I know that JP has thrown out there for the
10:01last five or six years.
10:02No stat's perfect, but as one of the better stats, as I said, 11th in the league.
10:07You know, slightly ahead of Stafford, Goff, Cousins, you know, good players in this league.
10:16You know, no one's saying that Matt Stafford's not taking enough chances, or Jared Goff's having
10:20a B season, or Kirk Cousins has been pretty mediocre this year.
10:25Well, Jaden's five, six spots ahead of him in one of the more all-encompassing stats.
10:30It's not a perfect stat.
10:31Stafford's been criticized.
10:33Okay.
10:34He's got eight interceptions this year.
10:36Stafford's threw some bone-headed picks.
10:38Yeah, everybody, that's my point.
10:39Everybody does.
10:40Yeah, but you get so defensive.
10:42Like, it's okay to say that Matthew Stafford is making mistakes.
10:45Of course, you could say Jaden's making mistakes.
10:47But I think the narrative is overwhelmingly, it's like you're taking a negative perception
10:52on Jaden, when I think he's been pretty damn good this year, all things considered.
10:56I would say in a game like this, because they're going to have to score points, he's going
11:00to have to play a lot like he did in that rookie year.
11:03He's going to have to run for more yards.
11:05How about just play like he did in Dallas before he got hurt?
11:07That's fine.
11:08This year.
11:08Or play like the Giants in the first half.
11:10Or the second half of the game when he brought them back against San Francisco.
11:15He's got to do it this week.
11:16It's been in chunks.
11:17He just hasn't done it for four quarters consistently.
